New Frameworks for Secure Image Communication in the Internet of Things (IoT)Albalawi, Umar Abdalah S 08 1900 (has links)
The continuous expansion of technology, broadband connectivity and the wide range of new devices in the IoT cause serious concerns regarding privacy and security. In addition, in the IoT a key challenge is the storage and management of massive data streams. For example, there is always the demand for acceptable size with the highest quality possible for images to meet the rapidly increasing number of multimedia applications. The effort in this dissertation contributes to the resolution of concerns related to the security and compression functions in image communications in the Internet of Thing (IoT), due to the fast of evolution of IoT. This dissertation proposes frameworks for a secure digital camera in the IoT. The objectives of this dissertation are twofold. On the one hand, the proposed framework architecture offers a double-layer of protection: encryption and watermarking that will address all issues related to security, privacy, and digital rights management (DRM) by applying a hardware architecture of the state-of-the-art image compression technique Better Portable Graphics (BPG), which achieves high compression ratio with small size. On the other hand, the proposed framework of SBPG is integrated with the Digital Camera. Thus, the proposed framework of SBPG integrated with SDC is suitable for high performance imaging in the IoT, such as Intelligent Traffic Surveillance (ITS) and Telemedicine. Due to power consumption, which has become a major concern in any portable application, a low-power design of SBPG is proposed to achieve an energy- efficient SBPG design. As the visual quality of the watermarked and compressed images improves with larger values of PSNR, the results show that the proposed SBPG substantially increases the quality of the watermarked compressed images. Higher value of PSNR also shows how robust the algorithm is to different types of attack. From the results obtained for the energy- efficient SBPG design, it can be observed that the power consumption is substantially reduced, up to 19%.

I've asserted in my research that the dissemination of images has changed significantly because of recent digital technologies. Social networking, in particular, has allowed for an intertextual web of communication to be created by exponentially increasing the visibility of images. By bringing these recent developments into my work, my design practice has focused on advancing social and political equality by exploiting digital reproduction. As part of my toolbox in image communication, the report focuses intently on two general methods of production: image-text relationships and visual tropes. By using these methods, I have been able to establish a critical practice that highlights the most recent possibilities in advancing social and political equality in the age of digital reproduction. / text

Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur elever i grundsärskolan inriktning träningsskola kommunicerar med hjälp av digitala verktyg respektive pappersbilder, med frågeställningen; på vilket sätt ger pappersbilder respektive appen Widgit Go elever stöd i sin kommunikation? Detta har undersökts i en kvalitativ studie med deltagande observationer som metod. Fem deltagare deltog i studien. Under sammanlagt tio tillfällen använde deltagarna först pappersbilder sen en kommunikationsapp i en Ipad för att begära olika föremål. Resultatet visade att båda hjälpmedlen fungerade som stöd deltagarnas kommunikation och att de använder Ipaden och pappersbilderna på samma sätt för att kommunicera. Kommunikationen med pappersbilder visade fördelar genom att deltagarnas uppmärksamhet i kommunikationen riktades mot mottagaren. Ipaden visade sig ha fördelar genom att den minskade risken för missuppfattningar i kommunikationen. / The aim of this study was to investigate how pupils in a special training school communicate with digital tools and paper images. The specific research question was in what way paper images and the Ipad communication app Widgit Go could support pupils in their communication. The method used involved qualitative participant observation on two occasions with five different pupils. In all, ten observations were conducted where the participants first used paper images followed by the Ipad app to request certain objects. The results showed that both tools supported the communication of the participants and that the app and the paper images were used in a similar manner to communicate. The paper imageshowed advantages by directing the attention of the communication towards the receiver. The Ipad app showed advantages by decreasing the risk for misunderstandings in the communication.

Previous issue date: 2017-10-18 / The beginning of the 21st century is marked by the propagation of actions related to the scientific dissemination. Still, the science-producing centers of Brazil do have no visibility compatible with the interest of contemporary society and only a small part of the Brazilian population has access to the science produced in the country. This study aims to evidence the importance of scientific dissemination in the organizational context for the democratization of scientific knowledge and as an important resource for legitimizing research units in relation to the lay public and the media. The investigation was developed through a bibliographical research and empirical study through a single case study of the Laboratório Nacional de Astrofísica (LNA) research unit. The data were obtained from the consultation of archives and analysis of documents, in-depth interviews conducted with managers and researchers of the LNA, questionnaires to journalists and direct and participant observation of the disclosure actions carried out by the institution. The data were analyzed in agreement with the theories about concepts and practices of scientific dissemination, identity, image and organizational reputation and communication policy that constituted the initial and final chapters of this study. It is concluded, among other aspects, that scientific dissemination is carried out in the institution studied, but that its role is not seen as a priority, since the target audience is not considered strategic. The actions of scientific dissemination carried out by the research unit are conducted without the guidance of a dissemination plan and therefore present problems that compromise the institutional visibility. / O início do século XXI é marcado pela propagação de ações ligadas à divulgação da ciência. Ainda assim, os centros produtores de ciência do Brasil não têm visibilidade compatível com o interesse da sociedade contemporânea e apenas uma pequena parcela da população brasileira tem acesso à ciência produzida no país. Este estudo tem como objetivo evidenciar a importância da divulgação científica no contexto organizacional para a democratização do conhecimento científico e como relevante recurso de legitimação das unidades de pesquisa frente ao público leigo e à mídia. A investigação foi desenvolvida por meio de pesquisa bibliográfica e estudo empírico através de um estudo de caso único da unidade de pesquisa Laboratório Nacional de Astrofísica (LNA). Os dados foram obtidos a partir da consulta de arquivos e análise de documentos, entrevistas em profundidade realizadas com gestores e pesquisadores do LNA, questionários a jornalistas e observação direta e participante das ações de divulgação realizadas pela instituição. Os dados foram analisados em consonância com as teorias sobre conceitos e práticas de divulgação científica, identidade, imagem e reputação organizacional e política de comunicação que constituíram os capítulos inicial e final deste estudo. Conclui-se, entre outros aspectos, que a divulgação científica é realizada na instituição estudada, mas que seu papel não é visto como prioritário, pois o público a quem visa alcançar não é tido como estratégico. As ações de divulgação científica realizadas pela unidade de pesquisa são desempenhadas sem a orientação de um plano de divulgação e por isso apresentam problemas que comprometem a visibilidade institucional.

Afin d'examiner la réception des publicités sociales et humanitaires, cette étude pluridisciplinaire analyse trois dimensions initiales : savoir avec l'objet, faire/être avec l'objet et analyse de l'objet. Ce choix est justifié sur la base d'une méthodologie pluridimensionnelle basée sur les études culturelles. Nous essayons d'expliquer les processus de réception, d'interprétation, de négociation et les discours des individus. Le comportement des récepteurs des publicités sociale et humanitaire et le rôle de ces derniers sont au centre de notre intérêt. Cette étude est réalisée à deux échelles, une étude monographique basée sur les affiches de l'Unicef France et une étude globalisante sur la réception des publicités sociale et humanitaire au sens large du terme. / In order to study the reception of social and humanitarian advertisements, this pluridisciplinary study analyses three initial dimensions : knowing with the object, doing/being with the object and the analysis of the object. This choice has been justified on the basis of a pluridimensional methodology based on cultural studies. We aim at explaining the processes of reception, interpretation, negotiation and the discourse of individuals. The behavior of the receivers of social and humanitarian advertisements and the rôle of the later are the focal points of our interest. This study has been undertaken on two levels : a monographic study of Unicef France's posters and a more global study on the reception of social and humanitarian advertisements in the broad sense of the term.

Previous issue date: 2012-12-12 / This paper aims to present considerations that may contribute to the shape linguistic and semantic function as discursive situation of interjections and phrases interjetivas, from the theoretical assumptions with main focus on studies Gonçalves (2002), Bakhtin (2000, 2002a, 2002b), Bakhtin / Voloshinov (2004) and Marcuschi (2007). The intention of this paper is to reflect and discuss the considerations of the use of interjections and phrases interjetivas acts as expressive, natural conversation, expressing your feelings through words and body language, featuring different senses of semantic and discursive. For data analysis, this research sought supports the theories of speech acts, based on theoretical and Austin (1962) and Searle (1981), in conversation analysis with theoretical support in Marcuschi (1991) and Dionysus (2011), and in the language of visual imagery, verbal and non-verbal of comic strips with methodological studies of Gumperz (1998) and Ramos (2010). The corpus chosen for this research consists in comic strips, selected the Folha de São Paulo in 1970 and 1990, in textbooks and electronic sites. This is a survey of the basic nature of the qualitative type that you want to analyze the form and function of interjections and phrases within interjetivas comic strips, observing the discursive and semantic factors. The analysis results show that, as of interjections and phrases can be interjetivas list the basic emotions of expressive acts and explain its flexibility from factors of pragmatic, and expressive acts that are not in the service of transmitting a information, but the service of a manifestation of an emotional state, observed in speech acts and conversation between characters when it materializes the image visual communication, verbal and nonverbal. Thus, it is expected that this research will bring a contribution for teachers of English, which can be used as a source of research, contributing to the construction of knowledge of teachers and students in the context of the classroom as a way of meaningful learning. / Este trabalho tem por objetivo apresentar considerações que podem contribuir com relação à forma linguística e à função semântica enquanto situação discursiva das interjeições e locuções interjetivas, a partir dos pressupostos teóricos com enfoque principal nos estudos de Gonçalves (2002); Bakhtin (2000, 2002a, 2002b), Bakhtin/Voloshinov (2004) e Marcuschi (2007). A intenção deste trabalho é refletir e discutir sobre as considerações do uso das interjeições e locuções interjetivas como atos expressivos, conversação natural, demonstrando seus sentimentos por meio de palavras e expressões corporais, caracterizando diferentes sentidos de ordem semântica e discursiva. Para análise dos dados, esta investigação buscou suportes nas teorias dos atos de fala, com base em teóricos como Austin (1962) e Searle (1981); na análise da conversação com suporte teórico em Marcuschi (1991) e Dionísio (2011); e na linguagem da imagem visual, verbal e não verbal das tiras em quadrinhos com os estudos metodológicos de Gumperz (1998) e Ramos (2010). O corpus escolhido para essa pesquisa é constituído nas tiras em quadrinhos, selecionadas do Jornal Folha de São Paulo dos anos de 1970 e 1990, em livros didáticos e em sites eletrônicos. Trata-se de uma pesquisa de natureza básica do tipo qualitativa que pretende analisar a forma e a função das interjeições e das locuções interjetivas dentro das tiras em quadrinhos, observando os fatores semânticos e discursivos. Os resultados da análise demonstram que, a partir das interjeições e locuções interjetivas podem-se elencar as emoções básicas dos atos expressivos e explicar sua flexibilidade a partir de fatores de ordem pragmáticos, e que os atos expressivos, não estão a serviço da transmissão de uma informação, e sim a serviço de uma exteriorização de um estado emocional, observados nos atos de fala e na conversação entre os personagens quando se materializa a comunicação de imagem visual, verbal e não verbal. Dessa forma, espera-se que esta pesquisa traga uma contribuição para professores de língua portuguesa, que poderá ser utilizada como fonte de pesquisa, contribuindo para a construção do conhecimento dos docentes e dos discentes no contexto da sala de aula como uma forma de aprendizagem significativa.
