An analysis of urban form as an approach to social sustainability: a comparative study of contrasting housing developmentsBotha, Deirdre 09 May 2019 (has links)
This research study aims to determine the impact of urban form on social sustainability. Definitions of urban form vary in the literature. One of the definitions describe urban form as spaces that enhance the sense of community, healthy communities and place attachment, while promoting environmental mitigation and adaption measures (Eizenberg & Jabareen, 2017). Likewise, social sustainability has not been clearly defined and universally understood and as a result its importance has been compromised (Vallance, Perkins & Dixon, 2011). This study of urban form also includes testing the success of the process of implementation, with the aim of providing evidence with regards to its success in the shaping of urban form. Important implementation processes of urban form include: planning processes, policies, processes of collaboration and partnership between different agencies, local participation, financial incentives, tax incentives and investment (Burton, Jenks & Williams, 2003). The case study of the research includes two contrasting housing developments that are at opposite ends of the housing spectrum. Masiphumelele, an informal settlement, and Lake Michelle, an Eco-Estate. Both these housing developments are situated between the areas of Noordhoek, Fish Hoek and Sun Valley in the City of Cape Town. This research project makes use of a multidisciplinary approach. Due to the spatial and social nature of the research, methods from both Geography and Urban Design were used. Qualitative methods were used, including interviews, field observation, volunteer work at an NGO, and spatial mapping. The research study finds that urban form does have an impact on social sustainability. The findings reveal that the measure of social sustainability is a result of firstly, the type of urban form. Secondly, it is a result of the nature of the implementation process of urban form. Third, it is a result of the residents’ response to the urban form. Social sustainability is thus not predictable, but the relationship between urban form and social sustainability is predictable. Both high-density and low-density urban forms have positive and negative results, depending on the specific context. Furthermore, the selected criteria with which to define both urban form and social sustainability will have an impact on the relationship between the two. Thus, calling for a uniform definition of both urban form and social sustainability, and the need for a context-specific approach to the design of urban form.

Barriärer och broar : Kommunikativa villkor i det svenska miljömålsarbetet / Barriers and Bridges : Communicative conditions within the Swedish environmental objectives implementation processJohansson, Madelaine January 2008 (has links)
In 1999, the Swedish Parliament introduced a new management by objectives (MBO) approach to sustainable development politics with the adoption of 15 national environmental quality objectives, ambitious objectives that are to be achieved within 20 years. Overall responsibility for implementing and evaluating the environmental objectives at the national level is assigned to central agencies but also for business and the public. This dissertation analyses the communicative conditions within the environmental objectives implementation process. The analysis in this study has a social system theoretical approach. The system with National Environmental Quality Objectives has both pros and cons. The National Environmental Quality Objectives has been difficult to communicate in established organisations as well as different sector agencies and departments. A challenge for the future is to adjust information and communication to a differentiated society on purpose to get resonance and understanding about the efforts needed to fulfil the National Environmental Objective’s achievement.

Strategy implementation practices and processes in defence evaluation and research institutes in South AfricaVan Rensburg, Hendrik Lodewicus Jansen 01 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the practices and processes executed by
middle managers as practitioners during the implementation of strategy. In order to do
that, this study investigated the problem of strategy implementation, analysed existing
literature, identified the gaps, and explored the roles of middle managers in terms of
strategy practices and processes, specifically in the South African Defence Evaluation
and Research Institutes (DERI) context. Resources, time and effort are applied to
formulating strategy but less of these to the execution of the strategy which includes the
emotions, motivations and actions that are intangible during the implementation of
strategy. The study therefore attempts to answer the following research question: What
practices and processes are employed in strategy implementation in DERIs in South
Africa?
The literature study was undertaken with the objective of mapping the research problem
and to highlight, through critical discussion, the latest work done on the subject of this
study. The gap in relation to research work was identified and the contribution is clear
that not much work has been done in this environment.
Research is a systematic process where information on a specific topic is gathered in
order to increase understanding of that phenomenon. A qualitative study was performed
and data was obtained from several institutes through interviews, documents and
questionnaires in order to build a rich database that could be analysed for the required
output. Engagement with the first level of management as well as the next level
management teams ensured that a representative population group was used during
this study. The data was organised, categorised, interpreted, identified, synthesised
and generalised. The quotations identified from the text were coded through inductive
coding and grouped into categories until a logical theme, category and concept was
formed.
The objective of this research was to investigate, identify and understand what the
strategy practices and processes are that make highly technical and scientific institutes execute strategies successfully. The study provided insight into and clarity on the
complexity of the strategy implementation process as executed by middle managers,
particularly in the South African context. The link was explored between formulation
and implementation as applied by middle managers as practitioners and the practices
and processes in use were identified.
It was demonstrated that the outcome of this research is applicable to the research
problem and also provides an understanding of the phenomenon, namely strategy
practices and processes in use at the Defence Evaluation and Research Institutes. It
can therefore be concluded that the research objective was achieved. / Business Management / D.B.L.
