Importance of KPI identification and implementation in Kuwaiti construction industry

Alrajehi, Shrouq H. January 2014 (has links)
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) play a vital role for organizations to measure project performance. The core objective of Key Performance Indicators is that not only organizations but also customers want their projects to be completed within the stipulated time and budget while maintaining the quality standards. Performance measurement is foundation for continual improvement. Subsequently, as a regular rule, benchmarking is the next step to improve contractors’ efficiency and effectiveness of products and processes. Camp (1989) introduced benchmarking concepts and defines it as “the continuous process of measuring products, industry leaders.” It is a problem to measure the performance of large projects such as construction and communication projects using predefined KPIs. Objective of this research is to find a framework to improve project performance through benchmarking of key performance indicators, to identify the suitable KPI prevailing in the construction industry of Kuwait and develop and calculate the KPIs to assess the performance of the construction projects and making recommendations to improve project performances of construction industry. For this study two Kuwaiti construction companies are selected i.e. Company AA and Company BB. Performance of their financial and non-financial data is analyzed. Primary data is collected through questionnaires and in performance of Company BB. Data also revealed that Company BB’s are having cost and time overrun. Organizations like Company BB have to investigate reasons of cost and time delays causing dissatisfaction. Decision of material selection and delivery time should be carefully taken. Organizations should improve its employment policies from selection to compensation, working conditions, motivations and availability of health and safety facilities; as satisfied customers can satisfy customers. Subsequently, Company BB management performance needs immense improvement at all levels and in all processes. Consideration of design quality indicators (DQI) as per requirement of stakeholders and bio-diversity impacts, it is impossible to satisfy the internal or external stakeholders of construction projects. This thesis contributes useful and new knowledge to the Kuwaiti construction industry. This study reveals the importance of significant KPIs needed for the growth of medium construction organizations through benchmarking the bigger organizations. The ultimate goal of this study is to highlight the importance of KPIs to access success of medium construction organizations. Although it is believed KPIs could be used for benchmarking of bigger size organizations.

Associate Degree Nursing Graduates Perceptions of NCLEX Performance

Pulito, Judy 01 January 2017 (has links)
There has been a shortage of registered nurses in the United States for more than a decade, and an aging population is increasing this problem. This study was prompted by the number of associate degree nursing graduates at a Midwestern community college failing the NCLEX-RN licensure exam, which is required for employment. The purpose of this study was to explore associate degree graduate nurses' views of the effectiveness of classroom and clinical training on NCLEX -RN exam performance. Guided by the conceptual framework of Bigg's students' approaches to learning, which maintains deep learning is associated with achievement of learning outcomes, this qualitative case study investigated ways to improve success on the licensure exam. The central research questions examined the perceptions of what nursing school experiences contributed to NCLEX-RN success or failure. Semistructured interviews with 5 recent graduates who have been successful and 5 who failed the exam were conducted to gather the data. Triangulation and member checking were used to improve the quality of the data. The student perceptions were coded to identify emerging themes. The following themes that impact NCLEX performance were identified: extreme anxiety, fear of failure, faculty student relationships, and approach to learning. The findings revealed the need for additional faculty training in curriculum and instruction, reducing stress and building self-confidence. Based upon these findings, faculty were encouraged to participate in a 3-day professional development activity designed to improve their skills in preparing students to take the nursing examination. Possible social changes can benefit healthcare institutions, nursing graduates, and community by expanding the nursing workforce.

Performance management process at Wica Cold AB : towards an improved performance in the order-to-delivery process

Schultz, Patrik January 2009 (has links)
Thesis, civilekonomprogrammet, School of Management and Economics at Växjö University, Logistics, FE3094, spring 2009 Author: Patrik Schultz 840222 Tutor: Helena Forslund Title: Performance management process at Wica Cold – towards an improved performance in the order-to-delivery process Background: Performance measurement and the management of it have become of great importance for organizations in order to compete in today’s business environment. The performance management process at Wica Cold AB is not very well developed and they would know like to know how it can be developed in order to improve performance in the order-to-delivery process. Performance in this thesis covers the aspects of efficiency, quality, deliveries, time, flexibility and improvements. The PM-process is in this thesis seen as measures used, collection and analyzing of data and make use and take action based on the measures. How to make use of the measurement information, what should be measured and that lack of resources is an important aspect for the PM-process in SMEs like Wica are the main problems identified. Objectives: The objectives are to describe the PM-process at Wica Cold and the corresponding performance in the OTD-process. Furthermore the objectives are to find ways to develop the PM-process in order to improve performance in the OTD-process, also taking into consideration the characteristics of a SME regarding the PM-process. Methodology: This thesis is a case study and it is both descriptive and explanatory. The main scientific perspective in this thesis is the positivistic and it has a deductive approach. Data is mostly collected through semi-structured interviews. The scientific credibility is secured by interviewing employees at different positions, consider many views (theory, the benchmark study at Getinge Disinfection and the variety of data collection at Wica) and by gather all relevant information for the thesis on my hard drive. Results, conclusions: The current PM-process only has a few measures and it is not communicated to the employees very well. The performance in the order-to-delivery process is satisfying but can in many ways be improved. The PM-process can develop with some new measures and some small changes and additions in the current measures. One main aspect in this regard is to measure the amount of guarantee claims and percentage of orders delivered on time instead of only costs for backorders and guarantee claims. The measures should be published on a board on the shop floor as a way to make use and take action based on the measures. Meetings every other week should be in place to discuss ideas from employees and the value-added time. This improves performance since it highlights important aspects and common problems and a way to improve that performance can be found. The characteristics of a SME are taken into consideration for instance by limiting the amount of measures used and by making them simple and easy to collect.

Exploring teaching strategies to improve the performance of grade 9 learners in mathematics in Mkhuhlu Circuit, Bohlabela District

Mthethwa, Venetia Sebenzile January 2021 (has links)
Thesis (M. Ed. (Curriculum Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / This study explored the different teaching strategies which teachers use to teach mathematics in order to improve the performance of Grade 9 learners in the subject in Mkhuhlu Circuit; Bohlabela District of Education in Mpumalanga Province. The inability of Grade 9 learners to achieve the set minimum performance standard of a pass at level 3 (40%) in mathematics poses a challenge because mathematics is set as a pass requirement in the said grade and it is compulsory for all learners to enrol for this subject. The poor performance of learners in mathematics is attributed to inappropriate teaching strategies that teachers use in the teaching of this subject. There are lessons to be drawn from the practices of leading countries in learner performance in mathematics and this study sought to find alternative strategies that are appropriate for teaching Grade 9 learners and to improve their performance in mathematics in the circuit. The study used constructivism as its lens to look at the realities about learner performance in mathematics. Constructivism as a theory presents and unpacks the manner in which people learn and acquire knowledge. The participants for this study were sampled using a purposive sampling technique and samples were drawn from two secondary schools representing good and poor performance of Grade 9 learners in mathematics. Seven participants were engaged in this study and this sample included a principal, SMT member, and mathematics teacher from each school. A subject advisor for mathematics in the GET was also interviewed. This study adopted and followed a qualitative design of inquiry which included interviews, observation, and the analysis of documents and artefacts to collect data from the different respondents that were identified for this study. The inquiry was guided by the following research questions: Which teaching strategies do teachers normally use to teach mathematics in Grade 9 at Mkhuhlu circuit? There are two sub-questions which were used to support the main research question and they are: To what extent do teachers vary the strategies of teaching and which strategies and LTSM do the teachers use to teach mathematics in Grade 9? What is the level of support that teachers receive from the different levels of the system? Data was analysed by organizing the data collected using codes to summarize it and then interpret the coded data to identify themes, patterns and relationships. This study revealed that different teaching strategies have an impact on the learners’ academic performance in mathematics. It also emerged from this study that quality and effective teaching and learning of mathematics are grounded on the constructivist theory. This study also established that the choice and use of appropriate teaching strategies coupled with the availability of relevant resources contribute towards positive learning gains. Similarly, learners’ preferences of teaching and learning strategies must be considered towards the development and sustenance of a positive attitude towards mathematics. The study recommended that the Annual Teaching Plans should suggest teaching strategies to be used for a particular topic; and that teachers must specify their teaching strategies and their choice of resources in the planning of every lesson. The provision of resources, particularly for mathematics teaching must be made an apex priority. Subject advisors must give attention to the teaching strategies that teachers use in curriculum delivery and not only on content mastery and coverage. School Management Teams must follow-up on the implementation of ICT in their curriculum management and monitoring. The study further recommended that an analysis of results must shift from concentrating on the pass percentages and focus on the quality of the passes. The identified limitations of this study were methodological limitations and sample characteristic limitations where the size of the research sample was relatively small.
