Incipient Motion Of Coarse Solitary Particles

Gulcu, Besim 01 February 2009 (has links) (PDF)
In this study the incipient motion of coarse solitary particles having different specific weights and shapes was investigated. A tilting flume of rectangular cross-section having a net working length of 12 m was used through the experiments. The slope of the channel and the discharge in the channel are the two basic variable parameters that determine the initiation of motion. Particles made of cement and mixture of cement and iron dust in certain ratios were used in the experiments with an obstructing element of various heights right behind the particles. Dimensionless hydraulic parameters determined from theoretical analysis were related to each other. Velocity profiles over the flow depths were measured and flow conditions corresponding to critical conditions were evaluated in terms of critical velocities and shear velocities. The findings of this study were compared with the results of similar studies given in the literature.

CLASSIFICATION OF HIGH IMPEDANCE FAULTS, INCIPIENT FAULTS AND CIRCUIT BREAKER RESTRIKES DURING CAPACITOR BANK DE-ENERGIZATION IN RADIAL DISTRIBUTION FEEDERS

Almalki, Mishrari Metab 01 May 2018 (has links)
Monitoring of abnormal events in a distribution feeder by using a single technique is a challenging task. Many abnormal events can cause unsafe operation, including a high impedance fault (HIF) caused by a downed conductor touch ground surface, an incipient fault (IF) caused by partial breakdown to a cable insulation, and a circuit breaker (CB) malfunction due to capacitor bank de-energization to cause current restrikes. These abnormal events are not detectable by conventional protection schemes. In this dissertation, a new technique to identify distribution feeder events is proposed based on the complex Morlet wavelet (CMW) and on a decision tree (DT) classifier. First, the event is detected using CMW. Subsequently, a DT using event signatures classifies the event as normal operation, continuous and non-continuous arcing events (C.A.E. and N.C.A.E.). Additional information from the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) can be used to precisely identify the event. The proposed method is meticulously tested on the IEEE 13- and IEEE 34-bus systems and has shown to correctly classify those events. Furthermore, the proposed method is capable of detecting very high impedance incipient faults (IFs) and CB restrikes at the substation level with relatively short detection time. The proposed method uses only current measurements at a low sampling rate of 1440 Hz yielding an improvement of existing methods that require much higher sampling rates.

Balancing the Water Budget: the effect of plant functional type on infiltration to harvest ratios in stormwater bioretention cells

Krauss, Lauren Marie 19 January 2021 (has links)
Stormwater bioretention cells (BRCs) are a variety of green stormwater infrastructure with the potential to restore pre-urban water balance, provided they can be tailored to infiltrate and evapotranspire (i.e., harvest) urban runoff in proportions consistent with pre-urban hydrologic conditions. This paper evaluates their capacity to do so, focusing on evapotranspirative harvest, which is relatively understudied, and the capacity of CSR (Competitve, Stress-tolerant, and Ruderal) functional type to serve as an overarching framework characterizing the water use strategy of BRC plants. The goal is to determine if harvest (and therefore the ratio of urban runoff infiltrated to harvested; the I:H ratio) might be fine-tuned to meet pre-urban values in BRCs through informed manipulation of plant community composition. This study focuses on 3 critical plant water use traits, the turgor loss point, the point of incipient water stress, and maximum stomatal conductance. A global plant traits meta-analysis identified degree of plant competitiveness and stress tolerance as significant determinants of all three water use traits, with stem type (woody vs herbaceous) also being significant, but only for turgor loss point. Based on these results, six water use scenarios appropriate for plants with different CSR type/stem type combinations were developed. BRC plants spanning the range of CSR types necessary to actionize these scenarios were determined to be available in eight major climate zones of the coterminous US, suggesting that regulating plant water use in BRCs using CSR is likely feasible. Hydraulic simulations (Hydrus 1D) were conducted for each scenario in all eight climate zones and revealed significant differences in evapotranspirative harvest and I:H ratios in simulated BRCs. Competitive woody plants had the highest evapotranspiration and lowest I:H ratios; 1.5-1.8 times more evapotranspiration and a 1.6-2 times lower I:H ratio than stress tolerant herbaceous plants, on average, across climate zones. Despite these significant differences, no simulated BRC in any climate zone was capable of reproducing pre-urban I:H ratios, regardless of plant type. More water was infiltrated than harvested in all scenarios and climates with the inverse being true for all pre-urban conditions. This suggests that absent additional sources of harvest (e.g., use of BRC water for nonpotable purposes such as toilet flushing and outdoor irrigation, or adoption of novel BRC designs that promote lateral exfiltration, stimulating "extra" evapotranspiration from nearby landscapes), BRCs will be unable to restore pre-urban water balance on their own. If true, then using BRCs in combination with other green technologies (particularly those biased towards harvest), may be the best path forward for balancing urban water budgets. / Master of Science / Stormwater bioretention cells (BRCs) are a variety of green infrastructure designed to manage urban stormwater flows that can dramatically reduce the amount of stormwater that is rapidly (and unnaturally) conveyed from paved surfaces to ecosystems. Their ability to recreate natural flow conditions is dependent on them balancing rates of infiltration – slowly filtering water down to the water table – and evapotranspiration – letting plants capture and transpire water. This paper evaluates the extent to which different plant functional types (competitive, stress tolerant, and ruderal (weedy)) can be used to regulate this balance, bringing urban hydrologic conditions closer to pre-urban ones. Competitiveness and stress tolerance were found to significantly influence plant water use traits, as was plant stem type (woody vs herbaceous) to a lesser extent (i.e., managing water budgets using CSR functional type is theoretically possible). Published BRC vegetation guidelines in 8 major US climate zones were found to include both competitive and stress tolerant species (i.e., the range of functional types required to regulate BRC water balance exists, suggesting it is feasible). Finally, hydraulic simulations conducted under six plant water use scenarios (reflecting different CSR types and stem types) revealed significant differences in the ratio of water infiltrated to evapotranspired by BRCs (i.e., changing plant functional types can meaningfully influence BRC water balance). This said, the magnitude of this effect may be insufficient to return urban catchments to a pre-urban state. All BRCs infiltrated too much water in our simulations suggesting that absent additional sources of harvest (for instance., use of BRC water for nonpotable purposes such as toilet flushing or outdoor irrigation), BRCs will be unable to restore pre-urban water balance on their own. If true, then using BRCs in combination with other green technologies (particularly those biased towards harvest), may be the best path forward for balancing urban water budgets.

Contribution à la détection des défauts statoriques des actionneurs à aimants permanents : Application à la détection d'un défaut inter-spires intermittent et au suivi de vieillissement / Contribution to stator fault detection of permanent magnet actuators : Application to the detection of intermittent inter-turn fault and health monitoring

Haje Obeid, Najla 07 November 2016 (has links)
Thanks to technical advances in terms of weight, performance and reliability, synchronous machines are increasingly used in the transport field and especially in aeronautics. The maintenance strategies of these electrical systems are essential to avoid extra costs associated with unscheduled downtime. This document offers a study on the intermittent inter-turn fault occurring in the stator winding of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) and its consequences. This type of fault correspond to the emerging state for a future permanent short circuit condition. So far, studies have been limited to the detection of continuous inter-turn short circuits. The main purpose of this analysis is to define a detection method for this type of fault easy to implement. Based on the stator current analytical study of a PMSM current controlled in presence of intermittent short circuit, we had studied the impact of different variables influencing the current disturbance. We had found that the shape of the disturbance created by the fault was always the same and that it was the fault signature in the current signal. Later this analytical study was validated experimentally. In the next part we had studied the sensitivity of continuous short circuits detection methods applied in the case of intermittent short circuit. These methods have been proved unsuitable to detect the defect studied in this work. Therefore, we had proposed a dedicated method based on the fault signature identification using an adapted wavelet transform. It is a pattern detection method able to detect the intermittent fault and to distinguish it from other types of defects. The performance of the method was validated by simulation and experimental results. In the last part, a more general study concerning the winding health monitoring is proposed. It uses transfer functions and it is based on the monitoring over time of the winding high frequencies admittance curves evolution.

Preparation and characterization of vanadium oxides on carbon fiber paper as electrodes for pseudocapacitors

Cromer, Cynthia Eckles 10 April 2013 (has links)
Supercapacitors are important electrochemical energy storage devices for microelectronic and telecommunication systems, electric cars, and smart grids. However, the energy densities of existing supercapacitors are still inadequate for many applications. Vanadium oxides have been studied as viable supercapacitor alternatives, with varying results. Methods are often complicated or time-consuming, and electrode fabrication often includes carbon powder and binder. The objective of this work was to study the effect of processing conditions on specific capacitance of supercapacitors based on vanadium oxides coated on carbon fiber papers. This study was conducted to form easily-fabricated compounds of vanadium oxides which could offer promise as pseudocapacitor material, and to nucleate these compounds directly onto inexpensive carbon fiber without binder. The incipient wetness impregnation technique was used to fabricate the electrodes. Electrochemical performance of the resulting electrodes was tested in a Swagelok-type electrochemical two-electrode cell, and the electrodes were characterized by XRD and SEM. Interesting nanofeatures were formed and the vanadium oxides exhibited pseudocapacitance at a respectable level.

Knowing both biology and behavior of newly-mated founding ant queens may be extremely useful for understanding the evolutionary adaptations experienced by many social insect societies. The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of weight loss of A. sexdens founding queens on the mortality and on the production of eggs, larvae, pupae and workers, during both the founding and ergonomic periods, as well as to describe the behavior repertoire performed by the queens. Individual queen weight and number of eggs, larvae, pupae and workers per colony were taken weekly. Laboratory conditions were kept in 25 ± 5°C, 70 to 80 % of relative umidity and 12 hour fotoperiod. By the end of 168 days, mortality had reached 95,7% of the young queens, mainly in the pre-incubation phase (58,3% of mortality). On average, newly-mated queens weighed 0,7 ± 0,05g after the nuptial flight, losing, on average, 22,5% of weight during the founding period, and 44,7% in the ergonomic period. On average, the pre-incubation, incubation, larval and pupal phases lasted, respectively, 3, 26, 23 and 21 days. The relative frequencies of reproductive eggs, larvae and pupae in the founding period were significantly different from the ergonomic period. Forty-nine behavioral acts were identified and they could be distributed into seven categories, according to their seemingly deducible biological function. The newly-mated queens were found to be comparatively more active during the founding period, in relation to the ergonomic period. Contrary to what one could expect for Attini queens with claustral foundation, the most frequent behaviors registered for A. sexdens queens in this study were those related not to the care with the offspring or to the simbiont fungus, but rather to the self-grooming. This result is a strong indication that self-grooming may function as preventing colony contamination by potential parasites, having been possibly played an important role in the establishment of the obligatory ant-fungus mutualism. Data obtained from the conclusion of this study can be used in comparative studies among ant species, eventually helping in the understanding of their evolutionary processes.
