Internationalization of Chinese Construction Equipment Firms : “Take-off Drivers & Entry Strategies”

Halak, Michael, Reinke, Charlene January 2011 (has links)
This master thesis investigates how Chinese construction equipment firms internationalize (i.e. how they enter new markets and how they are driven to exit their own). For this, the institutions of China and Brazil are comparatively analyzed, Porter’s five forces model is used to analyze the Chinese construction equipment industry, while distinct resources, capabilities and key success factors are defined and analyzed for Sany and Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group (XCMG). After careful analysis, the authors bring to light various take-off drivers, patterns and strategies of Chinese construction equipment firms when internationalizing or venturing abroad. Chinese construction equipment firms are beginning to follow their Western counterparts, focusing their efforts on product quality and extensive customer service. Warranties, parts centers, aftermarket service and strategically placed research and development facilities are becoming more greatly utilized, expanding the quality and offerings of Chinese firms, while adding to the customers perception of overall value.    These key insights expand the knowledge base associated with Chinese construction equipment firms in developing markets, while unlocking new theoretical perspectives for supplementary research.

Determinants of Trucking Companies’ Strategies in Taiwan

Wang, Jeffrey Unknown Date (has links)
The trucking industry has been a major contributor to Taiwan’s economy for decades. Previous research concerning strategic management practiced in the industry, while insightful, did not pay enough attention to the specific commodity primarily carried by trucking companies. The generalization that all trucking companies carry the same commodity neglects the fact that competitive intensity varies considerably within the industry depending on the commodity carried. Consequently, many phenomenons could not be explained using frameworks from previous researches. This study concentrates on trucking companies primarily carrying steel and extends various disciplines from the strategic management literature to the trucking industry. Using the qualitative method of case study, this research attempts to understand the underlying drivers of firm performances and behaviors in addition to challenges faced by the industry. The findings suggest that industry conditions, firm resource portfolio, and formal and informal institutions collectively affect the behaviors and competition in the industry, therefore managers should avoid focusing on a single strategy and bear in mind the industry-based view, the resource-based view, and the institution-based view.

Salvador

Competitiveness and strategic change : a longitudinal study of the interactions between tourism industry and air Seychelles 1970 to 2007

Padayachy, Lunez Jude 06 1900 (has links)
In studying organisational change in Air Seychelles, the context, content and process of change together with the interconnections of the airline and the tourism industry in Seychelles through time is explored. The literature review shows that the substantive issues of interest to this study, contextualism as a theory of methods in management research, requires a case based research in particular with regards to the following gaps in the literature: the integration of inner and outer perspectives on sustaining competitive advantage, and conceptual insights on how strategy links firms and their environment. The study adopted a contextual and processual framework to build a theoretical perspective of competitive advantage. The study contributes to the field of strategic management and tourism development in Seychelles in the following ways: firstly, the development of a contextual and processual framework to explain the transformation of firms over time; secondly, the development of an understanding of the historical context of the tourism industry and its interactions with other sectors of the Seychelles economy; thirdly, developing an understanding of how Air Seychelles developed its resources and capabilities to sustain competitive advantage; fourthly, linking change processes and action to performance and in a sense developing an understanding on strategy implementation of strategic management practice in Air Seychelles. The study sheds some light on strategy formation and implementation at the firm level, and the dynamics between the firm and the industry. The findings suggest that firms respond opportunistically to external discontinuities in a dynamic environment - the entrepreneurial leadership of a firm prepares and support managers to operate under conditions of great uncertainty and ambiguity and allows them to behave opportunistically. / Graduate School of Business Leadership / DBL / Thesis (D.
