The acceptance-rejection algorithm is often used to sample from non-standard distributions. For this algorithm to be efficient, however, the user has to create a hat function that majorizes and closely matches the density of the distribution to be sampled from. There are many methods for automatically creating such hat functions, but these methods require that the user transforms the density so that she knows the exact location of the transformed density's inflection points. In this paper, we propose an acceptancerejection algorithm which obviates this need and can thus be used to sample from a larger class of distributions. / Series: Research Report Series / Department of Statistics and Mathematics

The Impact of Inflation on Capital Rotation in Inflationary Inflection Points : An Investigation on How Inflation Affects Capital Rotation Between Major Market Sectors as Economies Shift from Disinflation to ReflationHansson, Lars Lucas Philip, Berzups, Lukas January 2021 (has links)
There has been a multi-decade disinflationary period that, with the conjunction of recent pandemic-related events, led to extremes in various economic metrics: record lowest interest rates and inflation, increasingly loose monetary and fiscal policies leading to severe debt levels and money supply - all resulting in a multi-front pressure on inflation to start increasing, and after 30 years, for economic environments to reach an inflection point from disinflation to reflation. How would various market sectors perform if suddenly inflation starts to surge? Previous research of similar events, such as in the 1970s, as well as theory, points towards certain market sectors and asset classes, such as commodities, to outperform their peers. Research on this topic is fairly scarce, thus, to better prepare for such an inflationary event and gain insight on which market sectors are best to invest in or avoid, this paper conducts an investigation to explore that scenario. By looking at 11 major market sectors over 10 countries' historic inflationary points that shifted from disinflation to reflation, analysis determined that, while certain sectors are indeed more sensitive to changes in inflation than others, many more are sensitive to changes in interest rates that normally accompany inflation. Sectors such as Energy, Consumer Discretionary and Financials would perform well during this period, while sectors such as Information Technology would historically underperform. Contrary to the theory, not enough relation was discovered by the analysis towards the commodity sector as a whole to overperform, however, that does not mean that none exist. Further research is still required on this topic to increase knowledge and awareness so that the negative impact of inflationary events like the ones of the 1930s and 1970s can be avoided and even taken advantage of.

Dimensionally Compatible System of Equations for Tree and Stand Volume, Basal Area, and GrowthSharma, Mahadev 17 November 1999 (has links)
A dimensionally compatible system of equations for stand basal area, volume, and basal area and volume growth was derived using dimensional analysis. These equations are analytically and numerically consistent with dimensionally compatible individual tree volume and taper equations and share parameters with them. Parameters for the system can be estimated by fitting individual tree taper and volume equations or by fitting stand level basal area and volume equations. In either case the parameters are nearly identical. Therefore, parameters for the system can be estimated at the tree or stand level without changing the results.
Data from a thinning study in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations established on cutover site-prepared lands were used to estimate the parameters. However, the developed system of equations is general and can be applied to other tree species in other locales. / Ph. D.

Tropical intersection theory, and real inflection points of real algebraic curves / Théorie d’intersection tropicale, et points d’inflexion réels des courbes algébriques réellesGaray-Lopez, Cristhian Emmanuel 29 September 2015 (has links)
Cette thèse est divisée en deux parties principales. D’abord on étudie des relations entre les théories d’intersection en géométrie tropicale et géométrie algébrique. Puis on étudie la question des possibilités pour la distribution de points d’inflexion réels associés à un système linéaire réel défini sur une courbe algébrique réelle lisse. Dans la première partie, nous présentons des nouveaux résultats reliant les théories d’intersection algébrique et tropicale dans une variété algébrique très affine définie sur un corps non-archimédien particulier (dit corps de Mal’cev-Neumann). Le résultat principale concerne l’intersection d’un cycle algébrique de dimension 1 dans une variété à tropicalisation simple avec un diviseur de Cartier. Dans la deuxième partie, nous obtenons d’abord une caractérisation de la répartition des points d’inflexion réels d’un système linéaire complet de degré d>1 sur une courbe elliptique réelle lisse. Puis nous étudions quelques courbes réelles non-hyperelliptiques canoniques de genre 4 dans l’espace projectif de dimension 3. Nous obtenons une formule qui relie le nombre de points de Weierstrass réels d’une telle courbe avec la caractéristique d’Euler-Poincaré d’un certain espace topologique. Finalement, en utilisant la technique du Patchworking (dû à O. Viro), on construit un exemple de courbe réelle, lisse, non-hyperelliptique de genre 4 ayant 30 points de Weierstrass réels. / This thesis is divided in two main parts. First, we study the relationships between intersection theories in tropical and algebraic geometry. Then, we study the question of the possibilities for the distribution of the real inflection points associated to a real linear system defined on a smooth real algebraic curve. In the first part, we present new results linking algebraic and tropical intersection theories over a very-affine algebraic variety defined over a particular non-Archimedean field (known as Mal’cev-Newmann field). The main result concerns the intersection of a one-dimensional algebraic cycle with a Cartier divisor in a variety with simple tropicalization. In the second part, we obtain first a characterization of the distribution of real inflection points associated to a real complete linear system of degree d>1 defined over a smooth real elliptic curve. Then we study some canonical, non-hyperelliptic real algebraic curves of genus 4 in a 3-dimensional projective space. We obtain a formule that relies the amount of real Weierstrass points of such a curve with the Euler-Poincaré characteristic of certain topological space. Finally, using O. Viro’s Patch-working technique, we construct an example of a smooth, non-hyperelliptic real algebraic curve of genus 4 having 30 real Weierstrass points.

Development and improvement of methods for characterization of HPLC stationary phasesUndin, Torgny January 2011 (has links)
High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) is a widely used tech-nique both for detecting and purifying substances in academy and in the industry. In order to facilitate the use of, and knowledge in HPLC, character-ization of stationary phases is of utmost importance. Tailor made characteri-zation methods and workflows are steadily increasing the speed and accura-cy in which new separation systems and methods are developed. In the field fundamental separation science and of preparative chromatography there is always the need for faster and more accurate methods of adsorption isotherm determination. Some of that demand are met with the steadily increase of computational power, but the practical aspects on models and methods must also be further developed. These nonlinear characterization methods will not only give models capable of describing the adsorption isotherm but also actual values of local adsorption energies and monolayer saturation capacity of an individual interaction sites etc.The studies presented in this thesis use modern alkali stable stationary phas-es as a model phase, which will give an insight in hybrid materials and their separation mechanism. This thesis will include an update and expansion in using the Elution by Characteristic Points (ECP) method for determination of adsorption isotherms. The precision is even further increased due to the ability to use slope data as well as an increase in usability by assigning a set of guidance rules to be applied when determine adsorption isotherms having inflection points. This thesis will further provide the reader with information about stationary phase characterization and the power of using existing tech-niques; combine them with each other, and also what the expansion of meth-ods can revile in terms of precision and increased usability. A more holistic view of what benefits that comes with combining a non-linear characteriza-tion of a stationary phase with more common linear characterization meth-ods are presented.
