This volume contains essays on the history of African Studies at the University of Leipzig from the 1890s to the 1990s. With the exception of an overview chapter they were written by students of the Institut für Afrikanistik. The topics covered include plans for a 'colonial institute', African students in the period 1946-95, African linguistics in the GDR period, the journal 'asien, afrika, lateinamerika' and short studies of six scholars in this field.

This volume presents nine papers from a conference concerning Jan Czekanowski (1882-1965), who made his name as the ethnographer in the expedition of Adolf Friedrich, Duke of Mecklenburg, to East Central Africa in 1907-8. In what are today Ruanda, western Uganda and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo he collected material artefacts and skulls, ethnographic and other information, as well as recording music and speech. After returning to Poland he published the results of his research (mainly in German) and, in the 1920s and 1930s, became a leading specialist in the physical anthropology of Central Europe.

This volume contains a transcription of notebooks kept by Isidore Pélofy, a member of the Society of African Missions, during his long residence in Agoué, a small town on the coast of what is today the Republic of Bénin, close to the border with Togo. Pélofy's notes, apparently written in the 1930s and 1940s upon the basis of oral information, church records and published accounts, cover mainly the period between the founding of Agoué in 1821 and the introduction of French colonial rule in the 1880s, although some information from the colonial period is also included. This critical edition is particularly valuable as a source on African families originating from Brazil, Cuba and Sierra Leone.

This volume contains two short papers on ways in which Africa was depicted in fictional works published between 1689 and 1856. The first discusses four lesser-known German prose works from the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, indicating how they were influenced not only by contemporary ethnography but also by literary fashions and - in the Enlightenment - by philosophical debates. The second paper deals with a British woman who visited West Africa in the early nineteenth century and subsequently included her ethnographic observations in fictional writings.

This paper presents a syntactic analysis of the modal particles in Hausa. The research shows that modal particles may appear at all phrase and sentence borders but that they may not appear in initial position.

This paper challenges two basic assumptions connected with the traditional analysis of consonants in Khoisan languages. A different approach to these issues, which can do away with two major typological anomalies of Khoisan phoneme systems under the traditional view, is presented.

The dictionary compiles lexical items related to animals, domestic and wild, their anatomy and use, and human activities related to them. The lexical entries are given according to IPA conventions with all tones marked, followed by indication of grammatical category, definition (French and/or Latin scientific taxonomy), with occasional detailed annotations. The main part “Lexique beria – français” is followed by an “Index français – beria” and “Index latin – français – beria”.
