Access and use of poultry management information in selected rural areas of Tanzania

Msoffe, Grace E. P. January 2015 (has links)
Access and use of information facilitate the improvement of agriculture in rural areas. It is therefore important to ensure that adequate and appropriate information flows to the rural areas, and that farmers are able to utilise it. This study investigated the access and use of poultry management information in three rural districts of Tanzania, namely Iringa Rural, Morogoro Rural and Mvomero. The survey method, supplemented by methodological triangulation, was used to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 360 poultry farmers in the selected rural communities. Sixteen focus group discussions were conducted, in which 160 farmers participated. Twenty-two information providers were interviewed. The SPSS® software was used to analyse quantitative data, while qualitative data was analysed using content analysis. The findings indicated that poultry farmers needed information on poultry disease control, poultry protection, shelter for poultry and poultry production. There was very low identification and prioritisation of farmers’ information needs by the information providers. Farmers accessed information that had a direct impact and was deemed relevant to their farming activities. It was revealed that farmers accessed information mainly from interpersonal sources. Likewise, farmers preferred interpersonal and informal sources to formal sources of information. The extension officers were considered to be the most effective information source, followed by family, friends, and neighbours. Various factors, such as lack of awareness, unavailability of extension officers and poor infrastructure, influenced access and use of poultry management information. It was concluded that most of the information providers were not aware of the farmers’ information needs, and as a result they were not in a position to disseminate relevant information. In addition, farmers were used to an oral culture, which means that they would probably continue to depend on interpersonal sources of information, regardless of the availability of formal channels and modern sources. The study recommended several measures, including the use of multiple sources of information and delivery of information in a variety of formats, in order to accommodate various categories of farmers. The study also suggested some areas for further research. Furthermore, a model for effective dissemination of poultry management information in rural areas was proposed. / This research aims to investigate how sources of information relate to radio reporters who write about police related subjetcs in Curitiba, Brazil. This study was done under the focus of a complex problem, which considers the news as an important part of the source of information-journalist relationship. To explain this better: what people hear on the radio (such as what they read in newspapers and news websites, what they watch on television) is a reflection of this relationship, which is interdependent, as both journalists and sources share the interests in spreading their work, although sometimes divergent in their methods and purposes. The theoretical perspective applied is that of Newsmaking, with the analysis of the issue of sources of information considering factors such as productive routine, news values and professionalism. The techniques of data collection used are the participant observation – as the main method –and semi-structured interviews as complementary mechanism. This methodology was used to analyze the productive routine of five professionals from two radio stations in Curitiba: Band B and BandNews. During data collection, questions were observed, such as the pressures that are present in the reporter's routine and that impact on the choice of sources, such as the pressure for productivity and the reduced deadlines; the use of official sources and the mediation done by press officers; the performance of colleagues as sources of advice and information; the use of equipment and electronic media (HT radio, WhatsApp, social networks) to contact the sources; and the differences arising from different productive routines.

An Advanced Personal Health Record Platform For Patient Empowerment

Postaci, Senan 01 September 2012 (has links) (PDF)
In recent years, many Personal Health Record (PHR) systems have been developed to retrieve patients&rsquo / Electonic Health Records (EHRs) from external sources. However, current PHRs can provide access to only a small number of EHR systems, since there are many dierent interfaces, data formats and medical terminologies among dierent systems. When this is the case, all these diversity yields high integration costs. Development of such systems is dicult and expensive because of the reasons such as accessing to evidence based medical information, utilization of social networks to share information, incorporation of available medical knowledge models, etc. Due to the technical diversity of external information systems, a developer of a PHR system faces a dicult integration process when he wants to integrate a new source or service. Integration of medical devices is also important and necessary in a PHR system. However, most of the medical device vendors use proprietary formats and protocols for communicating their devices with external systems / again, causing high integration eorts and costs. In this thesis, these problems and challenges are addressed by providing an on-line personal iv healthcare management platform, i.e. eSaglikKaydim which is built on top of a highly modular architecture and provides services based on worldwide standards. In this way, eSaglikKaydim platform can be integrated with any external health information service and medical device so that it maximizes the data variety retrieved from all kinds of external health data sources. It is also known that in this virtual world, millions of people daily access social networks like Facebook. Given this situation, it is proposed to reflect on the potential of social networks, specifically Facebook pages, as reliable sources of scientific information. The aim is to analyze processes, social and informational, which would be intrinsically involved in the relevant access to these spaces, using for this purpose, the concepts such as information literacy, cultural capital and social capital. Also seeks to promote a descriptive and exploratory analysis of the page "Science Today" and, from it and the work of Tomaél, Alcará and Silva (2008), define a set of criteria to evaluate the quality of a Facebook page as a source of scientific information. Finally, through questionnaire analysis sent to fans of the page in question, try to reflect on the influence of the level of education of users access to pages with scientific themes on Facebook. The results aim to support the hypothesis that, in the context of the scientific nature of pages that meet the criteria of reliability, on Facebook, access is mainly for users of higher levels of education, relating the level of education to the concepts of cultural capital and informational literacy. It is concluded that concepts such as information competence and cultural capital, acquired by the subjects, are determinant in the effective use of social networks as reliable sources of dissemination of scientific information.
