Understand me, do you? : An experiment exploring the natural language understanding of two open source chatbots

What do you think of when you hear the word chatbot? A helpful assistant when booking flight tickets? Maybe a frustrating encounter with a company’s customer support, or smart technologies that will eventually take over your job? The field of chatbots is under constant development and bots are more and more taking a place in our everyday life, but how well do they really understand us humans?  The objective of this thesis is to investigate how capable two open source chatbots are in understanding human language when given input containing spelling errors, synonyms or faulty syntax. The study will further investigate if the bots get better at identifying what the user’s intention is when supplied with more training data to base their analysis on.  Two different chatbot frameworks, Botpress and Rasa, were consulted to execute this experiment. The two bots were created with basic configurations and trained using the same data. The chatbots underwent three rounds of training and testing, where they were given additional training and asked control questions to see if they managed to interpret the correct intent. All tests were documented and scores were calculated to create comparable data. The results from these tests showed that both chatbots performed well when it came to simpler spelling errors and syntax variations. Their understanding of more complex spelling errors were lower in the first testing phase but increased with more training data. Synonyms followed a similar pattern, but showed a minor tendency towards becoming overconfident and producing incorrect results with a high confidence in the last phase. The scores pointed to both chatbots getting better at understanding the input when receiving additional training. In conclusion, both chatbots showed signs of understanding language variations when given minimal training, but got significantly better results when provided with more data. The potential to create a bot with a substantial understanding of human language is evident with these results, even for developers who are previously not experienced with creating chatbots, also taking into consideration the vast possibilities to customise your chatbot.

Intent Recognition Of Rotation Versus Translation Movements In Human-Robot Collaborative Manipulation Tasks

The goal of this thesis is to enable a robot to actively collaborate with a person to move an object in an efficient, smooth and robust manner. For a robot to actively assist a person it is key that the robot recognizes the actions or phases of a collaborative tasks. This requires the robot to have the ability to estimate a person’s movement intent. A hurdle in collaboratively moving an object is determining whether the partner is trying to rotate or translate the object (the rotation versus translation problem). In this thesis, Hidden Markov Models (HMM) are used to recognize human intent of rotation or translation in real-time. Based on this recognition, an appropriate impedance control mode is selected to assist the person. The approach is tested on a seven degree-of-freedom industrial robot, KUKA LBR iiwa 14 R820, working with a human partner during manipulation tasks. Results show the HMMs can estimate human intent with accuracy of 87.5% by using only haptic data recorded from the robot. Integrated with impedance control, the robot is able to collaborate smoothly and efficiently with a person during the manipulation tasks. The HMMs are compared with a switching function based approach that uses interaction force magnitudes to recognize rotation versus translation. The results show that HMMs can predict correctly when fast rotation or slow translation is desired, whereas the switching function based on force magnitudes performs poorly.

Influence of Human Resource Practices on Employee Intention to Quit

Reducing employee turnover through retention practices is an area of great interest to employers who depend on a highly skilled workforce. In recent years, Cooperative Extension has experienced the loss of many local agents/educators due to resignation and also retirement incentives offered as a cost saving measure to manage reduced funding. Due to the type of work, the training needed, and the small pool of qualified applicants, it is important to pay attention to the retention of newly hired Extension workers. Prior research suggests a linkage of factors that can predict the likelihood of new employees' intention to quit. Human resource practices including recruitment & hiring, compensation & benefits, training & development, and supervision & evaluation are items that can directly influence the level of job satisfaction of new employees as well as their level of commitment to the organization. The level of job satisfaction and organizational commitment can, subsequently, predict an employee's level of intention to quit. This paper will share findings of research conducted in the fall of 2010, which included 480 Extension agents/educators, representing 12 states in the Southern United States. The study targeted employees with less than six years of employment and investigated human resource practices that influence intention to quit. Findings indicate a significant relationship between perceptions of human resource practices and intention to quit, mediated by organizational commitment and job satisfaction. Accordingly, the research has important implications for the management of Cooperative Extension and anyone working in or preparing to work in related fields. / Ph. D.

Papanicolaou Test Status Among Inner-City Adolescent Girls in Accra, Ghana

Cervical cancer is an emerging public health problem in developing countries. Globally, it is the 3rd most common malignancy in women after breast and colorectal cancers and 4th most frequent cancer in women, with an estimated 570,000 new cases and 311,000 deaths in 2018. Cervical cancer screening in the developed countries is credited with the reductions in cervical cancer morbidity and mortality during the last 50 years. However, nearly 90% of cervical cancer deaths occur in less developed countries. Ghana has a cervical cancer rate of 26.4%. Further, it is the highest cancer incidence faced among women 25 to 44 years and has a mortality rate of 17.4% in this age group. Knowledge, culture, attitude, and beliefs are known to limit women's participation in Pap test screening programs. Guided by the health belief model, the purpose of this quantitative study was to examine how knowledge, attitude, culture, and religious beliefs affected intent to seek Pap test screening among adolescent girls in Accra, Ghana. A total of 155 participants ages 16 to 20 years completed a 30-item questionnaire. Descriptive frequencies were calculated. Correlation and Chi-square tests were also performed to assess associations with intent to screen with Pap test. Most girls (92%) had never heard about Pap test screening. There were statistically significant correlations between cervical cancer knowledge (p=0.032) and attitude (p=0.001) with intent to participate in Pap test screening. However, culture (p=0.049) and religious beliefs (p=0.529) were not significantly associated with screening intent. The implications for social change include informing practice and research on how cervical cancer prevention programs can be tailored to girls living in countries where different cultural and religious values are practiced.

Digitisation of the splinting process : exploration and evaluation of a computer aided design approach to support additive manufacture

Upper extremity splinting is a popular treatment method for a range of conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis. The intent of this treatment approach is multifaceted, but fundamentally, the provision of tools to enable and encourage patients to carry out everyday activities and to improve their quality of life is paramount. However, the aesthetic and functional limitations of wrist immobilisation splints demonstrate various weaknesses in terms of wear duration and frequency. Patient compliance is often compromised due to a number of factors, including the perceived stigma associated with assistive devices. Additive Manufacturing (AM) has proved its worth in a number of applications relating to the design of assistive devices; builds of complex, bespoke fitting geometries make AM an ideal fabrication method for upper extremity splints. However, recent advances in system technology to enable multi-material builds have been limited in this field, and a distinct need for a specialised three-dimensional (3D) Computer Aided Design (CAD) software approach is required to allow therapists to design splints for AM. Furthermore, the intent to keep practising therapists at the forefront of splint prescription is of utmost importance. This research proposes a digitised splinting approach, specifically through development of a 3D CAD software strategy to allow therapists to capture their design intent without compromising creativity. Furthermore, the approach proposes the exploration of AM build capabilities by allowing the integration of more creative features, such as aesthetically pleasing lattice structures for increased skin ventilation. The approach also proposes the integration of multiple materials to replicate and improve upon current splint design and fabrication practises. The approach therefore explores an exciting new paradigm for upper extremity splinting, the driving characteristics of which have not been proposed before as a collective medium. This research describes the feasibility of capturing therapists design intent in a 3D CAD virtual environment, whilst capturing therapists opinions of the approach with suggestions for future research and development. Results concluded that therapists were excited by the proposed transition in AM splinting, but that significant development is required elsewhere to establish a supporting infrastructure in order to make the approach a viable option in future upper extremity splinting.

Sturla Þórðarson: his work in context of his time and an analysis of the authorial intent The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the literary-historiographical works of Sturla Þórðarson with regard to the specific historical situation at the time of their origin and the methods and authorial intent of this 13th century Icelandic historian. The introductory chapters give a brief overview of Sturla Þórðarson's life in a broader historical context, based on the extant primary sources, and of his literary and literary- historiographical works. The major topic of the thesis is an analysis and comparison of two of the author's works, Íslendinga saga and Hákonar saga Hákonarsonar, in context of various scholars' views of medieval historiography. The former saga belongs to the genre of samtíðarsögur (contemporary sagas), the latter to the genre of konungasögur (kings' sagas). Both works present the same historical period. The major object of analysis is the differences in the author's approach to the historical material in his literary-historiographical works of different genres; this analysis is followed by an attempt to explain the differences. Cette étude a pour objectif d’analyser l’influence de l’information multidimensionnelle diffusée à travers les sites boursiers sur la confiance de l’investisseur individuel, ainsi que tester l’effet médiateur de la confiance sur la relation informations/intention d’achat des actions.À partir d’une étude qualitative exploratoire et une étude quantitative auprès de 180 investisseurs individuels, nous montrons que la forme et la qualité de l’information influencent la confiance de l’investisseur. La qualité du site boursier exerce aussi un effet sur la confiance. De même, la confiance joue un rôle de médiateur partiel sur la relation informations/intention d’achat des actions. / This study aims to analyze the influence of multidimensional information disseminated through the stock-exchange websites on the confidence of individual investors, as well as test mediating effect of trust on the relationship information/ purchase intent actions.From a qualitative exploratory study and a quantitative study of 180 individual investors, we show that the shape and quality of the information affect investor confidence. Stock-exchange website quality also has an effect on trust. Similarly, trust plays a partial mediator of the relationship information/ intention to purchase shares.
