Modelling, Analysis, and Control Aspects of a Rotating Power Electronic Brushless Doubly-Fed Induction GeneratorMalik, Naveed ur Rehman January 2015 (has links)
This thesis deals with the modeling, analysis and control of a novel brushlessgenerator for wind power application. The generator is named as rotatingpower electronic brushless doubly-fed induction machine/generator (RPEBDFIM/G). A great advantage of the RPE-BDFIG is that the slip power recoveryis realized in a brushless manner. This is achieved by introducing an additionalmachine termed as exciter together with the rotating power electronicconverters, which are mounted on the shaft of a DFIG. It is shown that theexciter recovers the slip power in a mechanical manner, and delivers it backto the grid. As a result, slip rings and carbon brushes can be eliminated, increasing the robustness of the system, and reducing the maintenance costsand down-time of the turbine. To begin with, the dynamic model of the RPE-BDFIG is developed andanalyzed. Using the dynamic model, the working principle of the generatoris understood and its operation explained. The analysis is carried out atspeeds, ±20% around the synchronous speed of the generator. Moreover, thedynamics of the generator due to external load-torque disturbances are investigated.Additionally, the steady-state model is also derived and analyzed forthe machine, when operating in motor mode. As a next step, the closed-loop control of the generator is considered indetail. The power and speed control of the two machines of the generator andthe dc-link voltage control is designed using internal model control (IMC)principles. It is found that it is possible to maintain the stability of thegenerator against load-torque disturbances from the turbine and the exciter,at the same time maintain a constant dc-link voltage of the rotor converter. The closed-loop control is also implemented and the operation of the generatorwith the control theory is confirmed through experiments. In the third part of the thesis, the impact of grid faults on the behaviourof the generator is investigated. The operation of the generator and its responseis studied during symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults. An approachto successful ride through of the symmetrical faults is presented, using passiveresistive network (PRN). Moreover, in order to limit the electrical and mechanicaloscillations in the generator during unsymmetrical faults, the dualvector control (DVC) is implemented. It is found that DVC to a certain extentcan be used to safeguard the converter against large oscillations in rotorcurrents. Finally, for completeness of the thesis, a preliminary physical design ofthe rotating power electronic converter has been done in a finite elementsoftware called ANSYS. The thermal footprint and the cooling capability, with estimates of the heatsink and fan sizes, are presented. Besides, another variant of a rotating electronic induction machine whichis based on the Lindmark concept and operating in a single-fed mode is also investigated. It’s steady-state model is developed and verified through experiments. /
QC 20151006

Controladores discretos de tensão baseados no princípio do modelo interno aplicados a inversores trifásicos PWM / Discrete-time voltage controllers based on the internal model principle used in three-phase pwm invertersBotterón, Fernando 09 December 2005 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This thesis contributes to the analysis, project and implementation of discrete-time controllers based on the Internal Model Principle, aiming to improve the performance of three-leg three-phase PWM inverters with insulating output transformer usually found in the output stage of medium power double-conversion UPS. Initially, an investigation about issues concerning to the discrete-time models of three-phase inverters with space vector modulation and the LC filter have
been carried out. This investigation shows the impact of different switching sequences, sampling instants and filter cut-off frequency on the harmonic spectrum of sampled variables used for feedback. This is a concern when the switching frequency is low to limit the switching losses as in medium and high power UPS. In this way, this thesis proposes sampling methods that make possible to reduce the low order harmonics on the interest variables, which is relevant when state feedback is used. These methods allow to obtain discrete-time average linear models useful for the controller design. In addition, the saturation of the insulating transformer is addressed in details. The dc component arising from the digital implementation and from the circuit measures non idealities, and then amplified by an inadequate choice of the controller, may lead the transformer to saturate. In order to solve this problem, and in accordance with the Internal Model Principle, internal models adequate to the plant under consideration as well as discrete-time voltage controllers in stationary and synchronous frames which are not prone to amplify the dc component, are proposed. Another goal of this thesis is the improvement of the UPS output voltage transient
response due to linear and non linear load steps. This is obtained considering the sampling methods before mentioned, combined with internal models with reduced number of poles and low sampling rate. It is demonstrated that it is possible to improve significantly the output voltage transient responses, as well as to satisfy the rigorous classification of the standard IEC62040-3 for UPS without degrading the steady state performance. In addition, these control structures have enough stability margins, as proved in each case, and they results in simple and attractive solutions to be implemented in 8 or 16 bits fixed-point arithmetic microcontrollers and DSP with reduced memory space. The feasibility of the proposed solutions is verified with experimental results demonstrating
both transient and steady-state performances. Finally, a comparative analysis of the proposed control structures, over the light of the standard IEC62040-3, is presented.

Analysis and Control Aspects of Brushless Induction Machines with Rotating Power Electronic ConvertersMalik, Naveed ur Rehman January 2012 (has links)
This thesis deals with the steady-state, dynamic and control aspects of new type of brushless configuration of a doubly-fed induction machine in which the slip rings and carbon brushes are replaced by rotating power electronics and a rotating exciter. The aim is to study the stability of this novel configuration of the generator under mechanical and grid disturbances for wind power applications. The derivation, development and analysis of the steady-state model of the brushless doubly-fed induction machine with a rotating excitor and the power electronic converters mounted on the shaft and rotating with it, is studied. The study is performed at rated power of the generator between ±20% slip range. Moreover unity power factor operation between ±20% speed range is also discussed. Furthermore dynamic modeling and control aspects of the generator are also analyzed. The controllers were designed using Internal Model Control principles and vector control methods were used in order to control the generator in a closed-loop system. It is shown that through the use of proper feedback control, the generator behaves in a stable state both at super-synchronous and sub-synchronous speeds. Moreover Low Voltage Ride Through of the generator during symmetrical and unsymmetrical voltage dips is also investigated. Passive Resistive Network strategy is employed for Low Voltage Ride Through of the generator during symmetrical voltage dips. On the other hand, Extended Vector Control is used in order to control the negative sequence currents during unsymmetrical voltage dips. Suppression of negative sequence currents is important as they cause extra heating in the windings and affects the lifetime of the mechanical and electrical components of the generator and system due to oscillations in power and torque. In addition to the above studies a steady-state model of a single-fed induction machine is also developed and investigated where the rotating exciter is removed and the rotor windings are short-circuited through the two rotating power electronic converters. In this way the slip power circulates in the rotor and with the help of the two rotating electronic converters, rotor current is used to magnetize the induction machine thereby improving the power factor. The steady state model is verified through experimental results. /
20120914
/ Brushless Wind Generator with Rotating Power Electronic Converters

[en] A MIXED PARAMETRIC AND NON PARAMETRIC INTERNAL MODEL TO UNDERWRITING RISK FOR LIFE INSURANCE / [pt] MODELO INTERNO MISTO, PARAMÉTRICO E NÃO PARAMÉTRICO DE RISCO DE SUBSCRIÇÃO PARA SEGURO DE VIDAMARIANA DA PAIXAO PINTO 09 November 2017 (has links)
[en] The bankruptcies occurred in recent decades in the insurance sector, a movement arose to develop mathematical models capable of assisting in the management of risk, called internal models. In Brazil, the SUSEP, following the worldwide trend, demanded that the companies, interested in working in the
country, using an internal model for underwriting risk. Because of this, developing an internal model has become vital for insurance companies in the country. The proposed model in this work illustrated to life insurance for the underwriting risk was based on the Markov chains, on the Central Limit Theorem
to the parametric method, and Monte Carlo Simulation to the non-parametric method. In its structure, the dependence between the holder and dependents was considered. An application to masked real data was made to analyze the model. The minimum required capital calculated using the hybrid method was compared with the value obtained using only the parametric method. Then the sensitivities
of the model were investigated.

Identification and control of wet grinding processes: application to the Kolwezi concentrator / Identification et commande de procédés de broyage humide: application au concentrateur de KolweziMukepe Kahilu, Moise 17 December 2013 (has links)
Enhancing mineral processing techniques is a permanent challenge in the mineral and metal industry. Indeed to satisfy the requirements on the final product (metal) set by the consuming market, control is often applied on the mineral processing whose product, the ore concentrate, constitutes the input material of the extractive metallurgy. Therefore much attention is paid on mineral processing units and especially on concentration plants. As the ore size reduction procedure is the critical step of a concentrator, it turns out that controlling a grinding circuit is crucial since this stage accounts for almost 50 % of the total expenditure of the concentrator plant. Moreover, the product particle size from grinding stage influences the recovery rate of the valuable minerals as well as the volume of tailing discharge in the subsequent process.
The present thesis focuses on an industrial application, namely the Kolwezi concentrator (KZC) double closed-loop wet grinding circuit. As any industrial wet grinding process, this process offers complex and challenging control problems due to its configuration and to the requirements on the product characteristics. In particular, we are interested in the modelling of the process and in proposing a control strategy to maximize the product flow rate while meeting requirements on the product fineness and density.
A mathematical model of each component of the circuit is derived. Globally, the KZC grinding process is described by a dynamic nonlinear distributed parameter model. Within this model, we propose a mathematical description to exhibit the increase of the breakage efficiency in wet operating condition. In addition, a relationship is proposed to link the convection velocity to the feed ore rate for material transport within the mills.
All the individual models are identified from measurements taken under normal process operation or from data obtained through new specific experiments, notably using the G41 foaming as a tracer to determine material transport dynamics within the mills. This technique provides satisfactory results compared to previous studies.
Based on the modelling and the circuit configuration, both steady-state and dynamic simulators are developed. The simulation results are found to be in agreement with the experimental data. These simulation tools should allow operator training and they are used to analyse the system and to design the suitable control strategy.
As the KZC wet grinding process is a Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) system, we propose a decentralized control scheme for its simplicity of implementation. To overcome all the control issues, a Double Internal Model Control (DIMC) scheme is proposed. This strategy is a feedforward-feedback structure based on the use of both a modified Disturbance Observer (DOB) and a Proportional-Integral Smith-Predictor (PI-SP). A duality between the DOB and PI-SP is demonstrated in design method. The latter is exploited to significantly simplify the design procedure. The designed decentralized controllers are validated in simulation on the process linearized model. A progressive implementation of the control strategy is proposed in the context of the KZC grinding circuit where instrumentation might not be obvious to acquire./

New Contributions Towards Meal and Exercise Announcement-Free Artificial Pancreas SystemsSala Mira, Iván 03 April 2023 (has links)
[EN] Exogenous insulin infusions are vital for people with type 1 diabetes to partially make up for the inability of the pancreas to secrete insulin. However, current intensive therapies may restrict patients' quality of life. People with this disease have to constantly make decisions about insulin doses to bring glucose levels to a safe range. If unsuccessful, they may suffer from chronic and acute complications related to abnormally high and low glucose values. The automatic regulation of glucose with artificial pancreas systems promised to reduce patients' self-control burdens while improving time in normoglycemia and decreasing variability. However, these promises are fulfilled only partially. Although this technology outperforms the glycemic outcomes achieved by conventional therapies, meal intake and physical activity limit its daytime performance. Indeed, commercially available systems only can handle them with the support of the patients. For meals, patients must announce the carbohydrate content to the system. For exercise, they must notify the activity or take preventive actions like changing glucose setpoint or decreasing basal well ahead before exercise. These demands do not help reduce the patient's burden. They even can compromise the system performance when the patient misestimates the carbohydrate content, omits the meal announcement, or cannot plan the exercise event.
Hence, this thesis proposes new methods to eliminate the need for meal and exercise announcements, thus reducing patient intervention in artificial pancreas systems for a better quality of life. From a control perspective, meals and exercise can be regarded as disturbances; therefore, this thesis exploits methods from the disturbance rejection and fault accommodation literature to achieve the thesis goal. Specifically, the following three applications must be highlighted: 1) a super-twisting-based residual generator has been developed to detect unannounced meals as the first step to their compensations; 2) a sliding-mode disturbance observer has been designed to estimate the glucose meal appearance, which is fed into a bolusing algorithm to compensate the meals; 3) the internal model principle is employed to mitigate the effects of meal intakes and exercise, supplementing insulin infusions with carbohydrate recommendations.
As a result, the contributions of this thesis pave the way for the development of announcement-free artificial pancreas systems, releasing patients from the burden of diabetes management. / This work was partially supported by: grant DPI2016-78831-C2-1-R funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by “ERDF A way of making Europe”;
