Teacher education by means of internship : a case study

Hendrikse, Jacqueline Valerie 06 1900 (has links)
Teacher education through open and distance learning (ODL) and internships is not only crucial to addressing current and future needs of learners in South Africa, and Africa as a whole, it also encapsulates the possibilities of several much-needed new perspectives on these two fields. This research is a qualitative case study drawing from the subjective views of both the mentor teachers and the student-teacher interns already immersed in the ethos and everyday workings of a functioning local private school, PS. A case study was deemed to be an appropriate research design as the researcher is based on site and was able to spend extended time investigating, exploring and observing the student-teacher interns and their mentor teachers going about their daily routine. The sample of participants chosen comprised of the student teachers already based at PS and studying through ODL together with their assigned mentor teachers. The findings of this study reveal an expansion of the student-teacher intern’s field of involvement and participation in the school and all school related activities. The mentor teachers, as the data revealed, also benefitted in various ways and most importantly were provided with an opportunity to reflect on their personal teaching practice and philosophy. The study examined factors that facilitated or impeded the development and professional growth of the student-teacher intern and these factors had a direct bearing on the relationship that existed between the student teacher and their class mentor teacher. The data was collated from the open-ended questionnaires, the informal discussions held and the daily observation of the intern programme in action. The principle recommendations resulting from this study is based on the reported range of benefits to both the student teacher and the mentor teacher. The intern programme can be recognised and valued as a relevant contribution to the South African educational system as it would seem that the student teachers coming through this system feel confident, well informed and professionally ready to take on their own class of learners. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / M. No. of bitstreams: 1 maria carolina.pdf: 2205078 bytes, checksum: b63dfc5feeca9cf0601655b2b853a4df (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-08-05 / The internship aims at the improvement of the student through practical activities, where one can apply the lessons learned in school. In this sense, it is up to the IFAM Internship Program/Center providing quality services to the entire community, fulfilling their goals effectively. However, we observed the absence of a system for evaluating the effectiveness of such program. The the main objective of this research was to develop a model for evaluating the effectiveness of the IFAM Internship Program/Center from the perspective of the student in order to improve the services provided by the program. To collect data a questionnaire was designed with closed and open questions, based on the SERVQUAL model developed by Parasuraman et al, (1985). The research sample consisted of 99 students of technical in-person courses, full time courses as well as PROEJA (Adult courses). The study showed that all dimensions of service quality of the IFAM Internship Program/Center have shown negative gap, thus revealing the need for re-planning actions by the managers of the program, including: interventions of teachers, in order to clarify the main questions of the students about the internship; planning meetings with new trainees, providing practical situations in the IFAM laboratories where the student can learn and experience the challenges of laboring world. In this sense, it is recommended studies be made to hear the opinion of the companies which use the services of IFAM Internship Program / Center for admitting such students.

The Examination of Confidentiality in A School Based Setting

Dababneh, Hannan M., Ayisha Vault, Kalisha -Koran 01 June 2014 (has links)
This research study explored the policies and procedures that education systems abide by, as well as how these policies are enforced to protect the confidentiality of dependent children’s private information from being exposed in their schools to non-relatives and uninvolved parties to their case. Elementary, middle school, and high school faculty’s perception of confidentiality was explored to identify individual competence when working with social workers during their direct contact visit with dependent children on school premises. Data collection included anonymous online surveys of 30-school faculty of various schools in the Southern California. There were no significant findings to support school faculty’s lack of competence of confidentiality protocol when a Department of Children and Family Service social worker conducts a visit on school premises. Future research should involve a qualitative study of school faculty perceptions to gain more accurate and unbiased information from participants.

Aguilar Pizarro, Nicoll’s January 2024 (has links)
