Normative Influence on Athletes' Intentions to Intervene in Sport

2015 August 1900 (has links)
Previous research in the activity area has found that descriptive norms can influence individual activity (Crozier, 2014; Priebe & Spink, 2014; 2015). While important, studies examining other important outcomes in the activity area have not been conducted. For example, no research has examined whether normative information can be used to influence athletes' intentions to intervene with other teammates. In an effort to address this gap in the literature, the purpose of the current experiment was to examine whether descriptive norms, that were either supported by a coach or not, would influence a player’s intentions to intervene when teammates made technical errors or did not exert enough effort. Canadian adult soccer players (N = 106) were recruited to participate in this online experimental study. Participants were assigned to one of three conditions: normative (teammates intervene)/coach support, normative (teammates intervene)/coach not support, or attention control. Participants in both of the normative conditions read two short vignettes describing how the players and coach on a hypothetical soccer team responded to a teammate’s technical mistakes and lack of effort, respectively. While imagining themselves as a member of this hypothetical team, participants then rated their intentions to intervene with other members of this team. Results from ANCOVAs (controlling for previous intervening behaviour) revealed different results for intentions to intervene following technical mistakes versus lack of effort. Results for technical mistakes revealed a significant main effect for condition F(2, 102) = 4.98, p < 0.01. Post hoc results revealed that those in the normative condition that was supported by the coach reported greater intentions to intervene in the future than those in the control condition (p < 0.05, adj Cohen's d = 0.71). Conversely, intention to intervene did not differ between those in the normative condition that was not supported by the coach and those in the control group (p > 0.05, adj Cohen’s d = 0.13). There was no significant main effect for condition with respect to teammates exhibiting a lack of effort F(2, 95) = 1.82, p > 0.1). Results from this experiment provide initial evidence that descriptive norms supported by a coach may influence players' intentions to intervene when a teammate makes a mistake.

Uncovering evidence for the inhibition of return effect in the non-spatial domain

Spadaro, Adam January 2015 (has links)
Our attentional system has the remarkable ability to allow familiar contexts to guide attentional orienting, while still retaining the ability to orient rapidly to novelty in our environment. Many cognitive paradigms have been used to investigate the particular process that is responsible for orienting attention to novel events, but each paradigm has produced a unique set of boundary conditions. One such paradigm has studied an effect labelled Inhibition of Return (IOR), which has been argued to tap into an attentional mechanism that rapidly orients attention to novelty, but only in the spatial domain. The IOR effect was initially taken as evidence of a fundamental difference between spatial attentional orienting and non-spatial attentional orienting. However, there were a small number of early studies that questioned the view that the IOR effect can only be observed in the spatial domain. In this dissertation, I built upon the evidence for non-spatial IOR by uncovering the effect using a Target-Target (TT) procedure. Although a number of prior studies had failed to observe non-spatial IOR using a TT procedure, I was able to uncover non-spatial IOR effects using a TT procedure by introducing an intervening event. The IOR-like effect that was uncovered using this procedure was labelled the intervening event effect. I introduced a dual process framework to explain the intervening event effect. According to the dual process framework, intervening events between consecutive targets can disrupt an episodic integration process, allowing the influence of a separate opposing process to be measured more directly. Using the dual process framework, I studied the level of processing of the intervening event that was necessary to disrupt episodic integration, as well as the context-sensitivity of the episodic integration process. Lastly, I investigated the role of subjective expectancy in the studies used to measure non-spatial IOR in this thesis. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Fatores intervenientes na produção da notícia e seus impactos na qualidade da informação

Villar, Fabíola Bach January 2017 (has links)
The unpredictability of events that will be converted into news, and the need to comply with daily deadlines turn the newspaper newsroom work into an activity under constant pressure by internal and external factors. At all times, editors have to make several quick decisions, such as whether they bet on a given fact as news, whether the reporter will gather information in the streets or contact the sources by telephone, the best approach for the event, how many and what sort of people must be heard, where to collect data, how to write clearly and attractively for the reader. Moreover, how to guarantee that such decisions will result in accurate, unbiased and reliable information. Within this context, this thesis aims at contributing to the identification of internal and external factors that affect news production, and impact the quality of information that reaches the reader. Resting on a transdisciplinary approach, and employing theoretical concepts from the Communication, Process Management, and Information Quality areas, a case study was built based on applied research. Firstly, the process in a print newspaper newsroom was mapped seeking to identify production flows and critical points. In a second moment, by using Delphi Method seven editors who work in the company were heard with the objective to understand the overriding interferences in the newsroom daily activities, and how they affect the journalistic text. When analyzing the impact of time on newspaper production, the interviewees recognize harmful effects specially during the stage of fact ascertainment, when the reporter collects information and conducts interviews. The editors also highlight the significance of the data cheking stage. The outcome will be non-contextualized news, innacurate or mistaken information and text inconsistency. Regarding the reporters routine, it is evident that the biggest difficulties are in obtaining a different angle from a given piece of news, and gaining access to sources and data within the available time span. Understanding the intervening factors of news production, and being ahead of them might assure to journalists the development of the ideal piece of news more often, which according to the interviewees is that one containing contextualization, plurality, interpretation and creativity.

Participation of the Administrators of Japanese Companies in Taiwan totheManagerial Performance: Organizational Commitment as Intervening Variable.

Su, Mine 19 July 2001 (has links)
This thesis indicates that the relationship between the budgetary participation and managerial performance of Japanese companies in Taiwan is practical. If organizational performance is an intervening variable of budgetary participation and organizational commitment, it proves that the relationship budgetary participation and organizational commitment is positive and obvious. It also reveals that organizational commitment and managerial performance also have a positive relationship. In addition, budgetary participation can get an indirect influence to increase managerial performance by adding organizational commitment., The demonstrations show that the relationship between budgetary participation and managerial performance is negative, which is the same as the outcome of Sterdry (1960), Bryan & Locke (1967), Blumenfield & Leidly (1969) and Cherrington (1973). However, it is different from that of Argyris (1955), Brownell (1982), Brownell & McInnes (1986), Govindarajan (1986), Dunk (1990), Kren (1992). Therefore, the relationship between budgetary performance and managerial performance has not reached a consistent conclusion until now. In order to explain the inconsistent relationship between budgetary participation and managerial performance, the studies are based on the organizational commitment as an intervening variable. After the demonstrations, without dividing into groups, organizational commitment has an indirect influence between budgetary participation and managerial performance. However, by dividing into groups, it does not indicate the causation relationship except that of the group of Taiwanese managers to join the formal budgetary participation. According to different nations and different ways to join in a group by dividing into variable groups, with an advanced research, it reveals that the relevant coefficient of organizational commitment and managerial performance is positive for Japanese managers. Moreover, the relevant coefficient of the group of informal budgetary participation is much higher than that of the group of formal budgetary participation. Thus, it proves that Japanese managers prefer to the informal budgetary participation, which matches the assumption of studies. For Japanese companies, the pattern to make decisions depends on the agreement of each member, and the managers prefer to cooperate with them in private (NEMAWASHI). For Budgetary Participation, it is just formal. Although the relevant coefficient of budgetary participation and organizational commitment for Taiwanese managers shows the positive aspects, it is impossible to achieve the indirect affection to increase the managerial performance within the use of organizational commitment. It indicates that Taiwanese managers can¡¦t possess the power to make decisions in the Japanese companies. Though they join those formal meetings of budgetary participation, they still can¡¦t increase managerial performance without any incentives. Therefore, it is not ideal to establish the budge of each department in a company only to encourage them to join meetings. It is to reward them or to give them spiritual support that can increase the managerial performance. This research can provide Japanese companies in Taiwan with the most important references to design or implement the budgetary system in achieving the expected goal.

Analýza výrobních a ekonomických ukazatelů při odchovu selat

DVOŘÁKOVÁ, Lenka January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the reproductive performance of sows corporate program Czech PIC in a commercial breeding Ratiboř, Agricultural Cooperative Chyšky district Písek. The observed breeding herd was formed on December 31, 2016 with 119 sows and gilts. To evaluate the reproductive performance, the breeding-cows were divided into breeding sows inseminated and not inseminated, sow for 1st to 2nd litters (risk litters), 3rd to 5th litters (litter production) and for the 6th and higher. The breeding sows are frequently inseminated between 230th 269th day of life. In 2016, on average 25.2 live-born units were born per sow. The number of weaned piglets was at level of 21.8, it means the values were below the desired optimum. Good results were found in the length of intervening time (155.3 days), and the associated number of litters per sow. Sows reach 2.4 litters per year, and there is no problem with the beginning of rut after weaning. A rut mostly occurs on 4th and 5th day after weaning. The total cost for sows amounted to CZK 676,519.43 per year, when 1 kg of weaned pig costs CZK 53.75.

Ochrana hospodářské soutěže - dohody narušující soutěž / Protection of economic competition - agreements intervening in competition

Mráček, Michael January 2016 (has links)
The objective of this thesis is to evaluate and describe Czech legislation regarding agreements intervening in the economic competition, namely with the focus on their actual form, specifics, characteristics and basic essentials, and to evaluate their correctness and business impacts, taking into account legislation and case law of the European Union. The purpose of the research is primarily to outline the basic elements of forms of prohibited agreements, highlight deficiencies of legislation related to them, and to argue findings arising from the literature and case law. The thesis is based on both Czech and European literature and judicature. The thesis is divided into six chapters which are complemented by the Introduction and the Conclusion. The First Chapter compares legislation of the Czech Republic and the European Union, while the attention is devoted in particular to the influence of European legislation and judicature on the development of Czech law and decision-making practice. It also focuses on certain differences and possibilities of their removal and overcoming. The Second Chapter forms the core of the thesis and also describes the core law governing the cartels when it closely examines every single part of the state of facts of prohibited agreements. This part provides a...

Ockupanter och gerillor, kort sagt en hel del att tänka på / Occupiers and guerrillas, in short, a lot to think about

Persson, Karl-Magnus January 2010 (has links)
The essay focuses on the military part of counter-insurgency and is based on two theories by the military theorists John Mackinlay and David Kilcullen. Who both in 2009 published a new book on the subject, The Insurgent Archipelago and The Accidental Guerrilla. The method used in the essay is qualitative text-analysis. The purpose of this essay is to examine whether resemblance between theory and doctrine exists. Therefore first of the theorists view in how an exogenous intervening force affects the local population has been analyzed. What emerged from this is partly Mackinlay's view that all forces of this nature will be seen as occupiers by the local people. Partly Kilcullen's view that the force affects the local population to resort to arms against them. This despite the fact that they’re original attitude towards the insurgent movement, which is the reason for the intervening forces presence, is of negative. As a solution to the problem Kilcullen brings forward the constitution of a strategic service, like the Office of Strategic Services. From these theories, a number of criteria have been selected which are then used as analytical tools to examine the doctrines. The doctrines which have been analyzed is the UK's Joint Doctrine Publication 3-40, U.S. Joint Publication 3-24 and the currently governing NATO document BI-SC Counterinsurgency Joint Operational Guidelines. The analysis has shown that some resemblance between theory and conceptual reality exist. However that theory, rather involved in a possible future while the doctrines are restrained by the framework of the present day.</p>
