Joanna Murray-Smith and Daniel Keene : class oppositions

Carroll, Kieran January 2007 (has links)
Joanna Murray-Smith and Daniel Keene are both successful mid-career Melbourne playwrights. Taking them as a starting point and re-tracing an Australian theatrical lineage, this project explores new Melbourne narratives in which two branches of the Australian theatrical idiom converge in a single creative work, my play Friday Night, In Town. An analysis of the writing of Friday Night, In Town, authored by myself and presented for examination herein, demonstrates its narratives are structured with deliberate reference to Murray-Smith and Keene revealing a new form of contemporary urban playwriting. The play's originality, it will be shown, and its contribution to new knowledge, lie in its engagement with these playwrights and their Australian predecessors. These elements combine with a redeployment of the medieval pageant-play, which is thus reinvigorated as a mode of contemporary playwriting practice. The play text presented herein (Friday Night, In Town) represents 75 per cent of the weighting for this M.A. (by Research) with the exegetical component weighted at 25 per cent.

Mello, Marlova Soares January 2017 (has links)
This thesis is the result of questioning and restlessness raised by the encounter of science fiction narratives and feminist ideas. These theoretical pulses trespass at some moments my academic trajectory, trying concomitantly to harmonize and to embody these two literary types. The underlying discussion comes from the reading of The Female Man, by Joanna Russ, inside a sutil chaining with my perspective as woman subject in contact with these universes. Lastly, It seeks to unravel the narrative fragments that are impregnated with powerful subversive images and transgressive words that invite male and female readers to rethink, resist and reshape the reality around them

An artistic director as an auteur in contexts: the case study of Dr. Joanna Chan of Hong Kong repertory theatre (1986-1990)

Tao, Siu Tip 29 December 2014 (has links)
The main objectives of this dissertation are: to research the theatrical term “artistic director”; and to investigate how an artistic director of a theatre troupe performs as an “auteur in contexts”. Through the case study of Dr. Joanna Chan (Chan), the second-ever artistic director of the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre (“the Rep / HKRep” / the Theatre), this dissertation examines the execution of her artistic directorship while she worked for a theatre company established and operated by the British colonial government. Auteur theories, Andrew Sarris’ in particular, are applied to investigate Chan’s creative works. “Artistic director” is a relatively new term in drama history. No serious or special studies have been conducted on the position, despite the fact that the job-holder is the creative force of a theatre company – by no means a meagre role. This dissertation closely studies the artistic directorship of Chan as an “auteur in contexts” when she took up the position at HKRep during Hong Kong’s final decade under British rule, particularly after the Sino-British Joint Declaration had been signed. Taking advantage of special political and social contexts, and as a Catholic nun with a broadly exposed, overseas educational background and an established career in theatre, Chan created local discourses in Hong Kong as an “auteur in contexts” by writing original plays and setting up the Rep’s first-ever theme for its drama season – Facing Deadlines. The bold and unique offerings of the drama season she designed, along with her other artistic works, all explored individuals’ dilemmas, social anxieties, and the Hong Kong people’s conflicting identity, induced by “the 1997 deadline”. Her emphasis on writing and promoting original plays had greatly contributed to the shift in the Rep’s programming from purely artistic offerings to productions tinted with social agendas. Through first-hand information obtained by interviewing Chan, other industry insiders and drama critics; through close study of Chan’s plays for textual analyses; and through research carried out particularly in the Rep’s news clippings library, this case study investigates how Chan as an artistic director managed to carve out a space for herself, to display her own style as an “auteur in contexts” of the text of HKRep, and to influence the local drama scene while working under a system replete with governmental constraints as well as facing larger political, social and cultural changes in society

"Humanity is Unnatural!" Feminisms and Science-Fiction Strategies in Joanna Russ’s The Female Man and The Adventures of Alyx

Lahtinen, Lauri January 2018 (has links)
While acknowledging that Russ’s work is problematic in some regards, the aim of this thesis is to counter the criticism of Russ’s oeuvre as outdated and sometimes stuck in second-wave feminist positions, instead demonstrating how Russ’s use of sci-fi strategies such as cyborgism, possible-worlds theory, utopianism, and concretised metaphors in The Female Man and The Adventures of Alyx enables her to move beyond second-wave feminist positions and anticipate third-wave feminism in ways that are still relevant today.

As causas de morte dos enfermeiros: uma revisão sistemática / Causes of death among nurses a systematic review

Karino, Marcia Eiko 14 February 2012 (has links)
The nursing work offers constant dangers for nurses due to exposure to many workloads that generate accidents and diseases with serious personal consequences, institutional and social. The nurse carries out its activities in a context that by own characteristics has many unhealthy stressors, due form of organization adopted, with shift work, double job, lack of information about its risks, lack of resources and inadequate facilities. These conditions make it possible workplace accidents and contamination by disease and, in extreme cases, cause the death of the nurse by the severity of the exposure at work. Thus, this study aims identify the best evidence on the causes of death of the nurse related to their working conditions, and to evidence their profile of mortality. The study is a systematic review by model of the Joanna Briggs Institute. It is guided by the following question: \"What is the best evidence on the causes of death among nurses, work-related?\" The chosen population was studies about nurses, written in Portuguese, English and Spanish, searched by July 2011. The searches were conducted in the databases recommended by the Joanna Briggs Institute and identified the following key words: occupational mortality, morbidity, occupational cancer, aging, suicide, depression, risk group; occupational hazards, chemicals, radiation-induced abnormalities, shift work, sudden death, tobacco, drug users, physiological stress, workers, working conditions, occupational nursing, burnout, health care worker infection; nurse, nursing, occupational health, death, health personnel. According to the strategy, we selected eight articles and their analysis allowed identify that the causes of death are related to different types of cancers and suicide among nurses and also assess the evidence presented according to the Joanna Briggs Institute. The results show that the mortality of nurses is related mainly to exposure to chemical and psych workloads in professional life. Demonstrate the need for further research, given the small number of existing publications that approach the damage caused to the health of nurses in the roles played in the daily professional practice

Slagle, Judith Bailey 01 January 2014 (has links)
Book Summary: Poetry Criticism assembles critical responses to the writings of the world's most renowned poets and provides supplementary biographical context and bibliographic material to guide the reader to a greater understanding of the genre and its creators. Each entry includes a set of previously published reviews, essays and other critical responses from sources that include scholarly books and journals, literary magazines, interviews, letters and diaries, carefully selected to create a representative history and cross-section of critical responses. Although poets and poetry are also covered in other titles from the Gale Literature Criticism series, Poetry Criticism offers a greater focus on understanding poetry than is possible in the broader, survey-oriented entries in those series. Clear, accessible introductory essays followed by carefully selected critical responses allow end-users to engage with a variety of scholarly views and conversations about poets and their works. Student's writing papers or class presentations, instructors preparing their syllabi, or anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the genre will find this a highly useful resource.
