The electronic journal : implications for information services

Du Plooy, Jean 06 September 2012 (has links)
M.Inf. / As more publishers become involved in electronic publishing, information centres need to respond to the challenges of accommodating electronic journals in their collections, as electronic journals are becoming increasingly important to research. In this research the role of the electronic journal within the scholarly communication process is examined. The role played by information providers and information centres in facilitating access to particular content in electronic journals is also studied. Partnerships that are developing between publishers, secondary publishers and information centres are traced. The importance of the publisher in quality control is emphasized. The peer review process is identified as fundamental to the scholarly communication process. The research methods employed were to carry out a literature study and to examine methods of access to electronic journals on the WWW. The Websites of publishers, secondary publishers and information centres were examined, in order to discover how they simplify access to electronic journal content for end-users. A workflow model was devised to serve as a guideline in assisting information specialists in their management of e-journals. The important challenge facing the information specialist is to provide a value added electronic journal service. This can be achieved through producing indexes and abstracts and providing an evaluation of the different sources

Writing that W/rights Politics? -- An Examination of the Re-viewing Practices of Telos, The Public Interest, and the Journal as an Institution of Criticism

Chaves, Elisabeth Kerry 14 July 2011 (has links)
My dissertation explores the relationship between journals and the political. Using the modern examples of The Public Interest and Telos, I analyze how critical journals write politics. As a scholar, I am interested in writing practices and how they shape epistemologies, ontologies, and Weltanschauungen; in essence, how they act as narratives of power. The practice I have undertaken to study in this dissertation is the practice of reviewing. The etymology of the word "review" is "to see again." Tracing the review form to its institutionalization in the early 19th century in Great Britain and bringing it forward to the late 20th century in the United States, I analyze how critical journals "see again," whether they challenge how the state "sees," or whether they conform to the state's view. I argue that by writing about politics and re-viewing the state's writing of politics, critical journals also contribute to the wrighting (or making) of political realities. / Ph. D.

Revistas científicas: a busca pela qualidade e indicadores bibliométricos / Scientific journals: the search for quality and bibliometric indicators

Nascimento, Carla Cristina do 05 November 2014 (has links)
To review the scientific literature with a view to analyzing the concept and criteria of quality for scientific journals, which major works, what types of measurement or quantification of quality are presented, as well as bibliometric study of literature retrieved. Method: The study was kind of document using a partial approach to integrative review. Data collection was performed in the Web of Science, SciELO, Scopus, VHL Journal Portal CAPES, E-Lis, LISA, ISTA and BRAPSI bases covering the period 2003-2013. Coverage on the subject composed a corpus of 69 original research articles. Results: The concept of quality is somewhat explained by the researchers. The quality criteria are based on compliance with formal aspects in selecting the best content and the efficient management of processes. Several bibliometric indicators are being researched, but many focused on citation indexes; the recognition that the scientific community had already been incorporated into the database. Spain is the country that leads the research on the topic, especially with work carried out by the University of Valencia and the Higher Council for Scientific Research. Conclusion: The professionalization of management journals\' strong tendency to gain and maintain the quality from the perspectives of readers, authors, editors and reviewers. The literature reflects that most Brazilian magazines still does not meet the formal aspects. In Spain, the focus is the question of the scientific content and bibliometric indicators. Countries in North America, Europe and Asia are the current focus on bibliometric indicators.

The Relative Value Scale: How Relevant Is a Journal to Your Institution’s Research & Instruction?

Dewland, Jason C. 24 April 2012 (has links)
Poster presentation from the Living the Future 8 Conference, April 23-24, 2012, University of Arizona Libraries, Tucson, AZ. / Due to significant cuts in the University of Mississippi's library budget, a ranking system was needed to determine the value of a journal to the local research and instruction needs. Major journal rankings products are not a strong resource to measure a journal's value because they exclude many journals and do not account for local research preferences. What was created was a simple algorithm to rank the business journal collection based on varying levels of usage, citations, and pricing. This poster will present an explanation of the algorithm, the resulting rank-order list, and what journals were actually cut.

The case for open access publishing, with special reference to open access journals and their prospects in South Africa.

Möller, Allison Melanie January 2006 (has links)
Open access publishing is an initiative that aims to provide universal, unrestricted free access to full-text scholarly materials via the Internet. This presents a radically different approach to the dissemination of research articles that has traditionally been controlled by the publishing enterprise that regulates access by means of subscriptions and licences fees levied on users, predominantly academic libraries. In presenting the case for open access publishing, the thesis explored the contemporary research environment, changing modes of knowledge production, the problems associated with the existing academic journal system, and the subsequent growth of the open access movement as an intervention to reclaim scientific communication. It highlighted the ways in which open access better answers the requirements of researchers, funders, governments, and society more broadly.

Perceived value of journals for academic prestige, general reading and classroom use: A study of journals in educational and instructional technology.

Bray, Kaye Evitt 05 1900 (has links)
Conducting research, evaluating research, and publishing scholarly works all play an extremely prominent role for university faculty members. Tenure and promotion decisions are greatly influenced by the perceived value of publications as viewed by members of faculty evaluation committees. Faculty members seeking tenure may be limited to publishing in a limited group of journals perceived to be valuable by members of an academic committee. This study attempted to determine the value of various kinds of periodicals (journals, magazines, and e-journals), based on three principal criteria, as perceived by professionals (university faculty, K-12 practitioners, and corporate trainers) in the educational/instructional technology (E/IT) field. The criteria for journal evaluation were Academic Prestige, General Reading, and Classroom Use. The perceived value of journals based on each criterion was compared to determine any significant differences. Members of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) were asked to rate 30 journals in the E/IT field using the three criteria. Statistically significant differences were found among ratings in 63% of the journals. The statistical analyses indicated that differences in the perceived value of journals among E/IT professionals across the three criteria (Academic Prestige, General Reading, and Classroom Use) were statistically significant. It is also noted that refereed journals were rated higher than nonrefereed journals for the Academic Prestige criterion. Survey respondents indicated that individual journals were not valued for the same reasons. This finding implies that the formation of any equitable measure for determining the value of faculty members' journal article publications would be best if based on definable criteria determined by colleagues. Lists of valued journals for each area of faculty assessment would provide standards of excellence both inside and outside the E/IT field for those who serve on tenure and promotion committees in educational institutions.
