This master's thesis explores the interaction of literary and visual languages within artist's books. It examines the impact of presenting a nonfiction text as an artist's book in order to determine if the reading experience evokes more effectively the singularity of a specific human experience. Le ventre des galets is the first part of this master's thesis. It is a nonfiction narrative about a trip to Ireland and about the grieving process for a parent. Presented in fragments, the text is intertwined with a visual narrative consisting of reproductions of watercolour paintings realized during the writing of the narrative. The book is printed and bound and is contained in a handmade case; the object is essential to the reading experience. The second part of the thesis is an analysis of the artist's book by Margaret Atwood and Charles Pachter, The Illustrated Journals of Susanna Moodie, focusing on the relationship between words and images and the effect that the combination creates. The analysis is preceded by a survey of two fields - nonfiction writing and the artist's book - to clarify each field and better understand the key characteristics of each. The third part of this thesis is an observation of my own creative process: writing, rewriting, constructing, and reconstructing of the nonfiction narrative and the book as an object. This section also touches on the challenges associated with the writing of nonfiction, specifically as it relates to revisiting and writing about grief.

\"Repensando os commons na comunicação científica\" / Rethinking the access to the scientific communicationPinto, Evelyn Cristina 23 May 2006 (has links)
Recent studies done by Benkler, Lessig, Boyle, Hess and Ostrom look at the concept of commons again however, this time in relation to information in general more specifically to scientific information. In this study, we focused on the cooperative character of scientific research, the importance of transparency and neutrality to access the scientific commons. The concept of commons is highly useful to focus on every scientific article that has already been published in print or digitally. This allows studies through several multidisciplines and finally emphasizes the dynamic of scientific communities around the world. In each commons of information, the higher the distribution of knowledge, the more dynamic and efficient the process of the evolution of this information. Technology of the press has been key in the divulging of information and its expansion marked a revolution in knowledge and culture in our civilization. Digital technology has shown more efficiency. Its implementation into bits is closer to the non-rival nature of the ideas than other technologies used to preserve it and used to distribute information. In our work, we realized that the science of commons should be enriched through cooperative practices and open access to scientific results. We also realized that digital technology in scientific commons improves distribution of scholarly knowledge and the dynamic evolution of scientific ideas so the science development should be even more efficient and faster. The digital revolution has been used to create a free environment of circulation of ideas and it has also been used to control certain things. On one side, computational code has been implemented to allow access just for people who pay for the service. On the other hand, online journals publishing and other alternative forms of disseminating scientific knowledge have been proliferated. The decreasing budget of libraries, the increasing cost of journal subscriptions and the increasing restrictions applied by intellectual property has enclosed the free nature of scientific ideas and it has put Scholarly Communication into a crisis. We are in the middle of a transitional phase, where legal, technological, social and economic aspects of scientific publishing have being renegotiated. We inserted our analyses in a larger context, the Scholarly Communication paradigm. This supports a larger study about the complex questions of our subject, analyzing the technological, legal, social and economic aspects of a possible transition to the open access publishing model. This new publishing model is so interesting that some initiatives have started social movements pertaining to it. Nowadays, there are many tests and publishing models especially in this line of work. We focused on the open access model in scientific results, its advantages, the difficulties of its establishment and how it has been developed. Finally, we propose that the creation of an open access digital libraries ecosystem specialized in every scientific field. Our staring models are services such as: arXiv, CiteSeer and Google Scholar. Among our conclusions, we have realized that following this models stated above, digital libraries can enhance the dynamic of circulation, generation, transformation and renovation of the scientific knowledge.

Previous issue date: 2007-02-28 / Universidade Estadual Paulista J?lio de Mesquita Filho / It verbalizes the influence of electronic communication (also of free access) and the commercial publishers control over scientific knowledge production. It starts from the point that the advantage of the advent of electronic media journal provides to scientific knowledge production, related to traditional support journal, is particularly related to acess speed and dinamization (time x space), not to contribute to paradigm changes within a domain. Concerning it has an exploratory, lining case study nature, it aims at analysing the use and the level of influence the electronic journals have been performing to scientific knowledge production within the University since the 1980 s, as well as presenting the level of influence of commercial publishers, by means of studying the Bradford s (80/20) Law reproductivity, in order to contribute to discussion/ reflection on forming and establishing indicators and control devices for managing title collections of electronic journals (Consortiums and Search Engines). Through collection and title and year analysis in dissertations and thesis from three decades (1980 s, 1990 s and 2000 s) of a certain domain, we have concluded that the hypothesis stated herein is valid. It seems that, due to the electronic communication phenomenon, researchers have been quoting more titles faster and faster. Therefore, the scientific progress seems to go forward quickly. As long as we have identified large influence from commercial publishers, we have also noticed the growth of free access to scientific information.
Quality assurance of research data is an important issue in open science. To enable transparency in research and data reuse, shared data have to meet quality requirements. However, the concepts of data quality and quality assurance are ubiquitous, yet elusive. Quality assurance practices have been researched for data publications in Data Journals, but not systematically for research data repositories. This dissertation elaborates how quality and quality assurance for research data can be defined and systematized. On this basis, a theoretical approach for quality assurance is developed. It is used for the analysis of quality assurance practices at data journals and research data repositories. For this purpose, guidelines of 135 data journals and certification documents of 99 repositories that have received the CoreTrustSeal certificate 2017–2019 are investigated. The analyses show how data quality is defined in data journal guidelines and by repositories and provide insight into repository quality assurance practices. The results informed a questionnaire that aims at analyzing prevalence of data quality assurance at research data repositories. The survey also
covered aspects such open measures of quality assurance, responsibilities and transparent quality documentation. 332 repositories indexed in the re3data registry participated in the 2021 online survey. The results of this dissertations analyses indicate the status quo of quality assurance measures and definitions of data quality at data journals and research data repositories. Furthermore, they also show that repositories contribute to the quality assurance of data publications with a variety of measures. The results are incorporated into a framework for quality assurance of data publications at research data repositories.

Overcoming the fear of speaking in a foreign language : a study of the role that selected humanistic techniques play in reducing language anxiety associated with oral performance in the TESOL classroomBowen, Amanda Deborah 30 November 2004 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate the role that humanistic techniques play in reducing feelings of language anxiety associated with oral communication in the TESOL classroom. Students in the experimental group attended classes which incorporated humanistic techniques such as journal writing and group work and where the affective needs of the students were taken into account. Students in the control group were provided with the normal course content along more traditional lines and their affective needs were not taken into account. Language anxiety was measured by means of questionnaires, journals and interviews. The results revealed that general feelings of anxiety about oral communication decreased in the experimental group. The experimental group achieved higher scores in the final written examination although there was no significant difference in the oral examination results between the two groups. The drop-out rate in the experimental group was lower than that of the control group. / English Studies / M.A.

台灣社會學門的知識生產網絡機制:以2001~2006年社會學門學術期刊引用網絡為例 / The Network mechanism of scholarly productivity in Taiwan sociology: An Example of citation networks of sociological academic journals in 2001~2006柯佩均, Ko, Pei Chun Unknown Date (has links)
Abstract
In recent years, as the world has been trending toward a Knowledge-based Economy, governments worldwide have recognized the importance of academic research, providing resources to upgrade the academic research level in order to internationalize scholarly pursuit. Taiwan, as a latecomer to the concept of Knowledge-based Economy, has begun to constitute science and social science rules and evaluations for academic development.
The study intends to capture the transformation of the academic field by examining citations. In early works in the science of sociology, citation was an important indication of scholarly productivity. Social network analysis (SNA) enriches the methodology, and makes the indication to the idea of citation networks. Based on the perspective of SNA, the study investigates the citation network database of sociological journals between 2001 and 2006, and the concurrent citation networks of sociologists from three prior sociological journals.
The results include three parts: first, the structure of journals' citation networks shows the trend of centralization, and two academic journals attain privileged status by means of structural equivalence. Second, the dual network of authors and journals demonstrate the citation divisions of sociologists and social workers. The sociological professional journals and social worker professional journals also are divided by time. Finally, the citation mechanism of sociologists verifies the normative pattern. In conclusion, the analysis confirms the impact of social science policy, which influences the centralization of citation networks and the advantageous status of specific sociological journals. The sociologists' citation networks are related to the specialty similarities of scholars, not the social relations. The study gives a pioneer explanation of citation networks of Taiwanese sociology.

Současné vývojové tendence žánru cestopis / Current trends in the genre travelogueKittnarová, Hana January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this work is to map, capture and enlighten the contemporary phenomenon of travel and travelogue, and introduce it as a still alive and evolving literary genre. This is illustrated by the analysis of contemporary Czech periodicals, blogs, websites and several literary works of this nature. The work, based on this analysis, creates their genre typology. The results show that there is a retreat of lyrical and poetic type, while the current is a form of narrative and novelistic travelogue, in which a subjective description and personal tone predominates and the position of the author - narrator is strengthened. Contemporary literary production of travelogue genre is very broad and findings of this work describe the current status and trends, which tend to mix and combine genres, incorporating travelogue into fiction and enriching it with new elements through differentiation of ideas and interests of travelers. The educative extent of travelogue in contemporary works is often taken aback, or is thanks to fictionalization appropriately incorporated into the text.

Tisk sloužící veřejnosti? Radniční periodika Hlavního města Prahy - přehledová studie / Press that serves the public? Survey of journals published by Prague's municipalitiesPísačková, Kateřina January 2017 (has links)
This master thesis deals with the phenomenon of journals published by local municipalities, defined in a recent amendment to the Press Act in the legal order of the Czech Republic as "journals of territorial administrative units". According to the press law the purpose of these journals is to deliver information about the self- governing unit while providing adequate space for presenting opinions and views of all ideological spectrum of the local council. These journals were recently criticized for being abused by the ruling political representation and being misused as a form of political PR rather than an independent news platform. My research is focused on their gradual professionalization that was recently encouraged by the changes in the Czech law. The research is based on a survey of editors of these journals. In the survey I investigated the background of the content production of these journals, various aspects of their organization, details about staff editors and their reflection on the topic, as well as control mechanisms that are set to ensure the statutory requirements of objectivity and impartiality. In addition to the survey, I also present a brief case study of the Hobulet magazine, published in the Prague 7 district, which is considered to be a progressive example of the genre. The...

Facilitating the development of self-directed learning skills in information systems students.Benvenuti, Susan Ann 07 January 2013 (has links)
Accelerating technological and social innovation drives the need for graduates ready for self-directed lifelong learning. Self-directed learning (SDL) projects are now an integral part of many formal undergraduate programs across the disciplines.
A Personal Development Portfolio (PDP) based on Grow’s Iterative Staged Self-directed Learning Model was introduced into a second year Information Systems course to raise awareness of the need for SDL and enable students to drive their own learning. The study evaluates the success of the PDP in preparing graduates as self-directed lifelong learners. Students’ reflective writing and learning journals, together with submitted portfolio work was taken as evidence of success and difficulties.
Resistance often accompanies the changes introduced by SDL. This research therefore also explores the potential for business change management principles in mediating change to the educational environment.
Student engagement with SDL was found to be accomplished with mixed success; most students demonstrated initial resistance, while many developed into focused reflective learners over time. While students were able to define appropriate learning goals and reflect on progress and achievement, mixed ability in specifying resources, strategies and validation to support their learning was found. Creating change readiness through messaging, cooperative SDL and using adapted change management models were of use in refining the SDL process.
