Participation and role of EU in resolving Nagorno-Karabakh ConflictHasanov, Ahmad January 2014 (has links)
The thesis analyses the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the region of Nagorno-Karabakh which both parties claim to be their historical territory. The thesis explains how the conflict started and continued with a full-scale military conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which is commonly referred to as the Nagorno-Karabakh War. One of the most important chapter of the thesis is the description of roles played by foreign mediators such as Russia, Kazakhstan, Iran and Turkey. All those countries pursued their own geopolitical and economic goals in the region, and wished to actively participate in it in order to spread their influence. The European Union has constantly been playing an important role in settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict thanks to its active involvement in all peacekeeping and mediation processes in the region. Nonetheless, despite all international efforts, the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh still continues as of today, and the parties cannot come to any compromise due to the antagonistic nature of their territorial disputes for Nagorno-Karabakh. Both, Azerbaijan and Armenia have started actively deploying their troops on the mutual borders, which raises fears among the international community that a new war for Nagorno-Karabakh might start already in the near future.

Mountain Fortress: The Past, Present, and Future of the Artsakh ConflictToghramadjian, Raffi January 2021 (has links)
Thesis advisor: David DiPasquale / For forty-four days in the fall of 2020, Armenians and Azeris fought a bitter war for control of Artsakh, also known as Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan’s victory upset the region’s uneasy status quo and plunged the South Caucasus into a renewed state of uncertainty. While the most recent war was fought with twenty-first century weapons, the roots of the Armenian-Azeri conflict over Artsakh stretch back well over a century. In order to unravel the causes behind Azerbaijan’s invasion last fall, this thesis delves into the history behind the present conflict, engaging both with Artsakh’s ancient past as well as the more recent developments that have shaped the region in the post-Soviet era. This thesis also offers a comprehensive account of the war, examining the factors behind Azerbaijan’s military success. In doing so, this thesis seeks not only to offer insights into past events, but also to identify the political dynamics that will continue to influence the region in the years to come. / Thesis (BS) — Boston College, 2021. / Submitted to: Boston College. Azerbaijan: Oil-Rich Yet War-TornJoyce-Stringer, Shanae 01 January 2005 (has links)
Prior to my visit to Azerbaijan I had never heard of the country or its conflict. Its existence has been recorded as early as Paleolithic times yet still today very little is known of the country that is rich in history and nationalistic pride. The country has been riddled with territorial wars that even continue today over the region called Nagomo-Karabakh. Azerbaijan's assets and plentiful resources provide the country with political and economic status on a global scale, yet it continues to be overshadowed by its failing foreign policy with Armenia. It is not until the nature of Azerbaijan's foreign policy is restructured, especially in regards to Nagomo-Karabakh, will the nation ever receive the attention and acknowledgement it deserves. It is to be acknowledged that the country has been making strides to globalize its society and emerge as a viable independent country in the twenty-first century. There has been collaboration with other countries both near and far from its borders to provide investments in the country's petroleum production as well as financial assistance for the country as a whole. There is much more work needed to be done in order to classify Azerbaijan as a successful former territory of the Soviet Union. Due to the growing needs for petroleum and natural gas throughout the world Azerbaijan has the potential to equate itself with Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. It is hopeful that by managing its oil wealth and outlining domestic and foreign policies so that they are favorable to the country’s existence can Azerbaijan overcome being oil-rich and war-tom.

Státoprávní postavení Náhorního Karabachu / The constitutional position of Nagorno-KarabakhBarsegyan, Karmen January 2012 (has links)

The Nagorno Karabakh Conflict And Its Impact On The Relations Between Azerbaijan And TurkeyEfe, Almula 01 October 2012 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis seeks to examine the relations between Azerbaijan and Turkey in terms of the role that the Nagorno Karabakh conflict plays in this relationship. The Nagorno Karabakh conflict, which is one of the long-lasting ethno-territorial
conflicts in the region, continues to be the major issue-area for Azerbaijan&rsquo / s foreign policy. In this respect, Azerbaijan&rsquo / s relations with Turkey, as well as NATO, the United States and Russia could be understood better through an academic study of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
Contrary to the views of some scholars who claim that the Nagorno Karabakh conflict has become relatively less important vis-à / -vis the economic and energy issues in the relations between Azerbaijan and Turkey, this thesis argues that the Nagorno Karabakh conflict still maintains its centrality in the relations between Azerbaijan and Turkey.
The thesis has five chapters, including introduction and conclusion chapters: Chapter Two explores the evolution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict during the Elchibey period, while the Chapter Three and Chapter Four discuss the impact of this conflict on Azerbaijan&rsquo / s relations with Turkey under Heidar and Ilham Aliyev periods respectively.
