The purpose of this study is to identify some of the performance problems associated with contemporary piano music, using the Sonata No. 2 for Piano by Karel Husa (1921 - ) as the basis for the discussion. In so doing, this study identifies Karel Husa as an important contributor to twentieth century piano repertoire. Personal interviews and correspondence with the composer provided biographical, analytical, and stylistic insight for this study. Supplemental information on Karel Husa was obtained from journals, newspaper articles, and dissertations. The first chapter provides biographical information gleaned from the interview, with emphasis on Husa's keyboard compositions and early compositional influences. The second chapter offers a detailed formal analysis of the Sonata No. 2 from the perspective of motivlc development and cyclic unity. The final three chapters focus on twentieth century performance problems as exemplified in Karel Husa's Sonata No. 2 for Piano. In Chapter 3, the discussion of notation provides a general background on notational developments in pitch and rhythm in the twentieth century, with the Sonata illustrating these procedures. The fourth chapter concentrates specifically on Husa's individual rhythmic language. The final chapter is devoted to Husa's coloristic use of the piano, addressing his unique contributions to the tonal and timbral resources of the instrument. Innovations in dynamic gradations, playing inside of the piano, and extensive use of all three pedals are discussed, as well as the special techniques required to achieve these sounds. In all the chapters, musical examples from the Sonata Illustrate the discussion, and reprinted by permission from the publisher. Throughout the dissertation, Karel Husahas provided Invaluable assistance and insight thus offering readers an important link to both the Sonata No. 2 and the composer himself.

Využívání historických motivů v panovnické legitimaci: srovnání francouzského a českého království v pozdním středověku / Comparison of the Use of Historical Motives in the Monarchical Legitimacy in kingdoms of France and Bohemia in the Late Middle Ages

Žůrek, Václav January 2014 (has links)
Václav Žůrek Comparison of the Use of Historical Motives in the Monarchical Legitimacy in Kingdoms of France and Bohemia in the Late Middle Ages Abstract Concepts of the past are most important parts in the formation of individual and collective identity. Medieval authors deliberately used the historical narratives as a means of enhancing the cohesion of respective social groups, usually the ruling strata of society. The doctoral thesis focuses on re-interpretations and exploitations of the past in France and Bohemia during the 14th century, on the role of historical narratives in the self-representation of the ruling dynasties Luxembourg and Valois, and on the perception of their own role in the history. Main question of the thesis is the social and literary context of the shaping of an imagination of the past: detailed comparison between the Latin and vernacular historiographical production at the royal courts in France and Bohemia bring also crucial observations as to the ways and means of cultural transfer between the respective centres of power.

Hornofová, Anna January 2016 (has links)
4 Abstract The thesis examines the Czech translations of the novel Winnetou by German author Karl May, which were published in the beginning of the 20th century, in the era of Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. The aim of the empirical research is to prove whether the translations were influenced and manipulated by the governing ideology or not. The paper also covers relevant works of the translation theorists Anton Popovič, Itamar Even- Zohar and André Lefevere. Due to limited extent of this paper the empirical re- search focuses only on selected parts from four Czech translations of the novel Winnetou, which are related to religious, philosophical and national topics. The analysis covers not only the linguistic aspect of the translations, but also takes into consideration the political situation of the relevant era. / Abstract: This work examines the theatrical play R.U.R. (Universal Rossum's Robots), written by the Czech author Karel Capek in 1920, and its particular importance for introducing, in modern literature, the figure of the robot as we conceive of it today. Initially, we briefly present some of automatons realized in fantastic literature of the XIX century, distinguishing Capek's new approach. Later, we point out parts of the play, act by act, suggesting relationships to particular philosophers and commenting the criticism on the play, in order to suggest new possibilities of reading different from the common interpretations since its publication and first production. For the success of such task, we need to rethink the meaning of the robot, inside the fictional context of R.U.R., and the implications generated by its appearance. / Mestrado / Historia e Historiografia Literaria / Mestre em Teoria e História Literária

Vejvoda, Michal January 2015 (has links)
Summary: Kritika monismu v díle Karla Statečného The Critique of Monism in the Work of Karel Statečný Michal Vejvoda The dissertation, ''The Critique of Monism in the work of Karel Statečný'', has led to a systematic point view on the issue of monism and its outline in Karel Statečný's work. It was found out, that Karel Statečný discerned a danger in this point of view, not only for the Church and the Christianity, but also for the whole society. The biggest danger of the monistic teaching lies in the fact, that the monistic principle is based on human nature. Karel Statečný realizes, that monistic tendency is deeply rooted in human nature, and thus is also objectively correct. With regards to Karel Statečný's analysis on monistic teaching, was discerned its danger to human religious sentiments, particularly in ethics: emptying of religion, in the case of removing of the element the personal God. Further on was found out, that monistical issues elaborated by Karel Statečný, speaks also today, because this monistic tendency is natural to human thinking. Pantheism - a belief in impersonal God, is also widespread, and this have a connection with spiritual instability and empty ethics. Therefore, the study of former monistic endeavors, may be useful to contemporary theology, theological philosophy and ethics....
