Development of an Online Course Using a Modified Version of Keller's Personalized System of Instruction

Liu, Hope Q. 23 April 2003 (has links)
Keller's Personalized System of Instruction (PSI) uses small units of instruction, self-pacing, mastery learning, lectures for motivation, and proctors for immediate feedback. While highly successful in the early 1970's, PSI fell out of favor for a variety of reasons. This developmental dissertation resurrects Keller's system in its purest form and uses PSI for an online Master's program. Using Cold Fusion™ and Dreamweaver™ an online Keller experience was created. Experts of PSI reviewed the product to check for fidelity to Keller's ideas. Formative and summative evaluation showed that this system of instruction is viable for the online environment. Recommendations and implications for future use are discussed. / Ph. D.

No. of bitstreams: 1 texto completo.pdf: 3214243 bytes, checksum: 9594a0e8832b60dfa2edda6f97dc2552 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-02-12 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / Located on Admiralty Bay, King George Island, Keller Peninsula has an area of approximately six square kilometers and there are records of presence of basalt, volcanic tuff, basalt-andesite and andesite in the geologic base. The latter two show veins of sulfides of late mineralizationhave high levels of sulfides, which shows a natural potential generation of acid rock drainage. In order to analyze the presence and influence of the acid rock drainage process on the availability of metals in water discharged into the sea in the Keller Peninsula, water samples at various points in watercourse to the sea, were collected during the months of February and March 2009, on different lithologies and drainage basin. Sediment samples were also collected from the bottom of the waterways. The water samples were acidified and filtered on cellulose ester membrane of porosity 0.45 μm. Were determined the following elements by Spectrophotometry of Optical Emission in Induzed Plasma: Al, As, B, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, S, Ti, V, Zn. The chemical conditions of water samples showed pH values close to neutrality even in close proximity of sulfide deposits and in some places, even on these. It was observed that the drainage basin are divided between: a) basins strongly affected by sulfides oxidation; b) basins affected by sulfides oxidation and c) basins not affected by sulfides oxidation. It was also found that concentrations of ions in solution were always higher in the watershed affected by sulfides indicating a breakthrough in the chemical weathering process in these areas. Four sulfide deposits not previously reported in geological manuscripts were recorded and it was observed that these are always associated with geological faults. Among the secondary minerals dominated the species of the jarosite, as well as the Schwertmannite and other low crystallinity minerals. The presence of low crystallinity minerals, with high adsorption capacity minerals, founded too in beaches and marine terraces, suggests that a large portion of the concentration recorded in the waterways is not actually available in the pH environmental conditions recorded at the time of samples collection. Moreover, although the secondary minerals observed are of high instability it was not observed more crystalline forms of oxides and Iron oxyhydroxides. Due to the chemical conditions of pH of the samples recorded at the time of collection it is suggested that the term acid rock drainage is not suitable for this case. The process that occurs in the Keller Peninsula is the occasional generation of acidic waters influenced by the dynamics oxidation of sulfides, its soil gradation and mineral species, and against neutralization by melting and consumption of acidity by carbonates and silicates.

Fernández Sánchez, Percy, Rabanal, Roland 25 September 2017 (has links)
The polynomial maps whose Jacobian determinant is equal to 1 are called Keller maps. The Keller Jacobian conjecture claims that every Kellermap is injective. This conjecture is true for polynomials whose degree is less than or equal to two. In this paper we prove that the general casereduces to the study of the injectivity of maps of the form z 7! z+H(z),where the nonzero components of H are homogeneous polynomials of degree three, and every Jacobian matrix DH(z) is nilpotent.

Ways of Living: An Ethical Realism in the Prose of Gottfried Keller

Lipkin, Michael January 2018 (has links)
My dissertation, Ways of Living: An Ethical Realism in the Prose of Gottfried Keller, takes as its focus the extensive discourse in mid-nineteenth century German letters on what constitutes a properly “realist” work of literature. My study examines three major works by Gottfried Keller: Der grüne Heinrich, the Leute von Seldwyla cycle, and the political satire Martin Salander. I consider these prose works as a response firstly to the call by critics like Julian Schmidt and Gustav Freytag for a return to das Reale, as they called it, and secondly to the contemporaneous developments in the French and English novel. Keller, I argue, is less interested in offering a comprehensive social portrait of his native Switzerland than he is in exploring contrasting ethics, or modes of disposition towards the world: resentment and affirmation, parsimoniousness and wastefulness, sensuality and renunciation. To this end, Keller uses the familiar structures of Realist prose, like the construction of characters as types, the extensive description of physical objects, or the use of narrative topoi like the marriage plot, to dramatize conflicts between various Lebensarten: self-sacrifice in service of an unattainable ideal or fleeting happiness in the here and now, for example. For Keller, then, the “objectivity” championed by the Realists is above all a way of directing the reader’s attention towards the crises of value underpinning the most unremarkable of people and the most mundane of occupations. In Keller’s prose, I conclude, Realism is less an aesthetic program than a way of comporting oneself, a survival mechanism by means of which the hard truths of life, above all the vanity of human endeavor and the painful renunciations demanded by the world of work, are poeticized in order to make them bearable.

Perceptions of International Students in Poland Regarding Flipped Classrooms

Sarli, Mustafa Alper 01 January 2019 (has links)
Many international higher education students do not study in their native languages. Unlike their peers who would only worry about the content of the course, they also struggle with the difficulties of the language of instruction. Flipped classrooms, providing students with the learning materials prior to the class, may assist in alleviating the academic burden and the language challenge the international students are experiencing. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into how flipped classrooms may help international students with course engagement and their adaptation processes. The conceptual framework was Keller's personalized system of instruction. The research questions in this basic qualitative study focused on understanding the experiences of international students with the flipped classroom. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 international higher education students currently studying at a Polish university in a flipped classroom format. Data from the interviews were coded, and the following themes emerged during the analysis: international experience, flipped versus traditional, flipped classroom experience, and engagement in flipped classes. Results indicated a high approval rate of flipped classrooms among international students, and the PowerPoint presentations were the most preferred learning material during self-study. Hence, faculty members at Polish universities should consider the flipped classroom model to improve the learning experience for international students. Polish universities would benefit from an international student population and allowing them to overcome the initial language barriers and being successful will allow Poland access to potential employees with a global perspective.
