George Edward Kessler and the Indianapolis Park System : a study of its historical development during the City Beautiful era, 1895-1915O'Day, James Robert January 1988 (has links)
The purpose of this report was to investigate the role of George Edward Kessler and the historical events which effected the development of the Indianapolis park system. Heretofore, this area of study has received little scholarly attention. Kessler has proven to be a significant figure in landscape architecture and city planning history; his landscape and planning philosophies profoundly restructured the urban fabric of Indianapolis and numerous other cities throughout America. As a result of Kessler's involvement, Indianapolis is heir to a sophisticated network of parks and boulevards representational of City Beautiful Era planning. This park system is an historically and a culturally valuable legacy as it has shaped the city's urban character. The study focused on the Indianapolis park system's developmental period, 1895-1915. Primary and secondary source material was researched in order to document the park system's initial beginnings during the Park Movement through its maturation during the City Beautiful Era.Kessler's original plan contemplated 175 miles of parkways along the city's river and stream corridors, and an additional 175 miles of connecting boulevards. The Kessler park system included a total of 12,000 acres for the city. It should be noted that the system fell short of this grandiose scheme, however, the study concluded that Kessler played a significant role in the development of the Indianapolis park system. By the close of the 1920's, much of the groundwork for the Kessler plan had been successfully implemented. In recent years, designed landscapes have gained considerable new attention from preservationists, landscape architects and allied professions. Kessler's visionary scheme for the Indianapolis park system is a significant layer of design upon the city's physical plan.In light of this growing appreciation of the nation's historic urban greenspaces and the events which shaped them, this study was undertaken. / Department of Architecture

Socialt stöd och dess samband med psykisk ohälsa : En jämförelse mellan grupperna ensamstående mammor och sammanboende mammor / Social support and its relationship with mental illness : A comparison between single mothers and cohabiting mothersHedlund, Madelene, Olofsson, Ida January 2022 (has links)
The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support.

An examination of the pre-design process documentation and the impact on the renovations of three historic theatersRozmarek, Lesa Andrea 10 October 2008 (has links)
This thesis examines the pre-design documentation from the renovation of three
historic theaters located in Detroit, Michigan. Two theaters hired architectural firms to
produce a pre-design document. The third theater utilized a design-build approach to
renovation. Interviews were conducted to review the approach and final outcomes.
It became evident through the analysis of the documentation and interviews that
it was beneficial in the renovation of a historic theater to have a comprehensive predesign
process that identifies: the nature of the pre-design document, the nature of the
client, the nature of the pre-design team, and the scope of work and time available. It
also became apparent that the organizational approach that would apply to most any
document for a heritage building should follow the Problem Seeking format of: Form,
Function, Time and Economy. Utilizing this format for a pre-design record should yield
a document that is concise, comprehensive and flexible.

Beginnings of City Planning in Dallas, TexasPresnail, Patricia C. 08 1900 (has links)
City planning in Dallas, Texas, gives insight into various aspects of the early planning movement in the United States. Dallas city planning offers an opportunity to study the initial work for a plan; citizens' involvement in the pre-planning campaign and later in the workings of the plan itself; the conception of the plan; its implementation; and the differences between the proposed and the implemented plan. Specifically, the 1911 plan for Dallas, Texas affords a chance to examine Kansas City landscape architect George E. Kessler's ideas on urban areas. He believed that planning for an adequate boulevard system would enhance the beauty of a city as well as improving the business climate.

Flexor tendons have the ability to generate variable degrees of strenght and
movement in different locations of the hand, which is essential for the versatility of the
human hand and its capacity to make a precise manipulation and a strong grip. The injuries
of these tendons in zone II are common and can cause important functional problems in the
hand, for that reason they require a suitable and meticulous treatment.
At the moment, the type of surgery and the protocol of rehabilitation that should be
used in the injuries of flexor tendons in zone II are not specified and vary between the
different services of traumatology.
The purpose of the following study is to describe the improvements in total active
movements in injuries of flexor tendons of zone II of the hand, after the use of the protocol
of modified Durán.
The present work was made in the Traumatology Institute of Santiago and
corresponds to a type of study non experimental and retroprospective, longitudinal and
descriptive design. The sample in study was of 20 patients with 30 injured fingers between
January of 2004 and May of 2006, with immediate or delayed primary repair with
intratendineous modified Kessler point plus epitendineous coronal point and beginning and
continuity of rehabilitation therapy with modified Durán system.
According to the Strickland´s TAM, the final results were excellent in 16,66% of
the fingers, good in 26,66%, fair in 40% and poor in 16,66%. The intra-subject evolution
showed a significant linear tendency (P<0,05) with a significant improvement between the
three instances of measured times.
In conclusion, although the percentage of fingers with satisfactory final results was
smaller to the one of foreign studies, the comparison becomes difficult due to the
biosicosocial difference. On the other hand the improvements of total active movement
were significant after the rehabilitation, nevertheless it is necessary to continue the
investigations to be able to define possible variations in the treatment strategies.
