Structural Properties of ICLT Wall Panels Composed of Beetle Killed Wood

Wilson, David Edward 06 June 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Interlocking Cross Laminated Timber (ICLT) wall panels are a new wood construction product similar to Cross Laminated Timber panels. Besides being an innovative structural system, they also utilize beetle killed timber from many of the forests that have been devastated by the Mountain Pine Beetle. Three tests were performed on three ply ICLT panels measuring 8 feet (2.44m) wide, 8 feet (2.44m) tall and 8.5 inches (21.6cm) thick to determine the racking, flexural and axial strengths of the wall panels. After each test was performed the walls were disassembled and investigated for cause of failure. Using the data from the tests as a benchmark, simple analytical models to predict the design capacities of the walls for racking, flexural, and axial strengths were established. The analytical models for racking strength, flexural strength and axial strength predicted reasonably well the measured strength values. Additional testing is necessary to increase the available database, further validate the analytical models developed, better understand the structural performance of ICLT panels, and establish acceptable design methodology for ICLT wall panels.

Aesthetics of Defiance : Queer Subjectivity in the Films of Xavier Dolan

Malmquist, Sebastian January 2017 (has links)
This master's thesis is an investigation into Xavier Dolan's depictions of queer and non-normative characters. Through close analyses of the director's first five films, this study identifies Dolan's recurring stylistics and narrative techniques, and how they relate to his cinematic representation of individuals who do not conform to society's norms. The question of how queer subjectivity is presented to the spectator of the films guides the study, which outlines different kinds of subjective images and ways of expressing the inner worlds of the protagonists. As one of the first extensive academic studies of Dolan in English, the thesis carries out a dialogue with the few existing scholarly sources on the filmmaker, while also employing theories put forward by Deleuze, Pasolini, Bonitzer and Foucault, among others. Whereas previous writings on Dolan have focused almost entirely on national aspects of his work – interpreting the films as typically Québécois – this study considers the filmmaker from an international perspective. Although being an auteur study, the thesis highlights current issues of queer self-representation and the voices of the marginalized, proposing that Dolan's work offers non-normative alternatives to heteronormative narrative structures, patriarchal storytelling conventions and traditional family constellations.

Integrating Cover Crop Mixtures and No-Till for Sustainable Sweet Corn Production in the Northeast

Fine, Julie S 09 July 2018 (has links)
Fall-planted forage radish (Raphanus sativus L. longipinnatus) cover crops have shown successful weed suppression and recycling of fall-captured nutrients. This research evaluated the nutrient cycling and weed suppressive benefits of forage radish cover crop mixtures to develop an integrated system for no-till sweet corn (Zea mays L. var rugosa) production that improves crop yield and soil health. Treatments included forage radish (FR), oats (Avena sativa L.) and forage radish (OFR), a mixture of peas (Pisum sativum subsp arvense L.), oats and forage radish (POFR), and no cover crop control (NCC). Subplots were assigned to nitrogen fertilizer treatments to evaluate N sufficiency and timing: 0 kg N ha-1 as the control, 28 kg N ha-1 at side-dress, and 56 kg N ha-1 with application split between planting and side-dress. Results indicated that POFR and OFR provided improved N cycling and sweet corn yield compared with FR and NCC. Early season N from decomposing cover crop residue was sufficient to eliminate the need for N fertilizer at sweet corn planting, thereby reducing input costs and risks of environmental pollution.

This law also established the creation of the Special Committee of Killed and Political Missing (CEMDP) with the objective of promoting the recognition of the State through the responsibility of crimes committed during the period of political repression. Currently to the immediate enactment of this law, the State recognized 136 people as missing, according to the Dossier of killed and political missing, prepared by the Committee of Relatives. The other cases were referred to CEMDP, whose task was to analyze, investigate and judge the cases related to the victims. During the process of assessment of the cases, it was under the responsibility of each family the lifting of sufficient evidence to blame the State in the crimes. During the 11 years of action (1996-2007) to CEMDP received files relating to 475 victims. Of this total, 136 names were already listed in Annex I of Law 9.140/95, related to the missing. The other 339 cases were subject to review by the Committee. Of this number, 221 cases were accepted and families could be indemnified, and 118 cases were dismissed. Although it has been expanded in the years of 2002 and 2004, the Law 9.140/95 does not solve the case of the political missing, it does not allow the location of their remains and it does not guarantee punishment for those who practiced crimes at the time. Immunophenotypic Variation in Neonatal Pigs and Immunomodulating or Anti-allergic Effects of Microbial Treatments

Schmied, Julie 06 May 2013 (has links)
Due to the intrauterine environment required to maintain pregnancy it may be that neonatal animals are born type-2 immune response (IR) biased, which consequently may increase susceptibility to certain infectious and immune mediated diseases, such as allergy. Recently, the prevalence of both allergic and autoimmune diseases has increased, leading to the development of the hygiene hypothesis. The hypothesis states that lack of early environmental stimulus leading to inappropriate development and bias in IR, may contribute to this increase. The objectives of this thesis, therefore, were to: (a) Determine the IR bias of neonatal pigs. (b) Investigate the effect of heat-killed Escherichia coli, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and muramyl dipeptide (MDP) on the IR phenotype and the frequency of allergy in pigs sensitized to the egg white allergen ovomucoid (Ovm). (c) Establish IR phenotypes of pigs allergic or clinically tolerant to Ovm. Immune response bias was determined using an established phenotyping protocol and compared between two groups of pigs, (A) and (B). A difference in IR bias was observed. Bias in IR was not consistently towards type-2. Increase in indicators of type-1 IR, were greater in A and the frequency of type-2 IR correlates were greater in B. It’s likely that unidentified environmental variables may have induced this change, although etiology was not pursued. Treatment with heat-killed Escherichia coli, LPS and MDP had an effect on IR bias and frequency of allergy. Muramyl dipeptide-treatments promoted type-2 bias and were associated with increased frequency of allergy. Pre-treatment with E. coli did not affect allergic frequency, but did elicit the production of a relatively balanced allergen-specific IR phenotype. Lipopolysaccharide-pre-treatment was associated with decreased frequency of allergy. Correlates of an allergic IR phenotype in pigs were also established. The measurement of allergen-specific IgG, IgG1 and/or IgE activity and evaluation of late-phase intradermal skin tests were proposed to be useful in identifying allergic IR phenotypes. This thesis emphasizes the importance of considering the potential for variation in IR in terms of pig health and experimental reproducibility. Further, given the physiological similarities of pigs and humans, these findings may be extended to studies of food allergy in humans. / NSERC, OMAFRA, Ontario Pork, AllerGen NCE

The recorder disappeared from the music scene and, was later, brought back to life. Disseminated through education, it became popular and gained the status of professional instrument. Currently, its massive usage causes its reception to be filled with prejudice and discredit. It is necessary to broaden its repertoire so that the current musical practices are contemplated. In this perspective, this research aims to collaborate to the expansion of the repertoire of contemporary music for recorders, conceiving a piece for recorder and orchestra, using its expanded techniques and applying the concepts of exotopy, responsibility and finishing process of the Russian thinker and humanist Mikhail Bakhtin. Throughout the studies, a mouthpiece of the recorder which fits the body of the flute has been tested, analyzed and documented in an article publication and in this work. An analysis was performed in the works of my own in order to view the application of the selected concepts and their possible application in musical conception. The work Requiem for the birds killed in April was conceived under the perspective of the concepts of exotopy, responsibility and finishing process, having as thread the number 9 that, in Pythagorean numerology, is considered the number of the initiates. The piece is divided into 9 parts, and uses the spiritist literary work Birds killed in April to name each of them, which is configured as a cronoexotopic movement. The piece also takes elements from other important works as a motive for its enunciation. This recollection, besides turning the piece into a responsible re-enunciation, through analytical apprehension and appreciation/finish process, shows a transit of going to the place of the other and returning to the place of the unique and irreplaceable I. Then it is concluded that the dialogical musical text Requiem for the birds killed in April presents characteristics which are exotopical and responsible, and analytical/appreciative finishing process in its conception. It is considered a dialogic text under Bakhtin's perspective, because the voices of the author-creator, author-man, author-researcher and author researched, make up a dialogue that brings with it also, the voices of other authors.
