Abraham Alonzo Kimball: A Nineteenth Century Mormon Bishop

Higginson, Jerry C. 01 January 1963 (has links) (PDF)
Abraham Alonzo Kimball was born of Heber C. Kimball and his plural wife, Clarissa Cutler Kimball, in Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois on April 16, 1846. At this time the Mormons were being expelled from Nauvoo so young Abe was taken to Winter Quarters with the major portion of the Mormon refugees. Clarissa Cutler Kimball refused to come West with the Mormons. Instead, she took her young son to Iowa to join a break-off church founded by her father, Alpheus Cutler, called the True Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Abe's mother died about three years later and he was brought up in Iowa by his grandparents, Alpheus and Lois Cutler.

[en] PHYSICS OF STRONGLY CORRELATED AND DISORDERED SYSTEMS / [pt] FÍSICA DE SISTEMAS FORTEMENTE CORRELACIONADOS E DESORDENADOS

LUIS ALBERTO PECHE PUERTAS 15 June 2005 (has links)
[en] In this thesis we study the properties of strongly correlated and disordered materials, using model Hamiltonians to describe them. The thesis is divided in two parts. The first one studies the periodic Anderson model used to describe the properties of a Kondo insulator. In particular we take Ce3Bi4Pt3 as a paradigmatic compound, characterized by a small gap(of the order of meV ). For small concentration of metallic impurities, ions of La substituting Ce, the alloy (Ce1-xLax)Bi4Pt3 suffers a metal- insulator transition. The periodic Anderson Hamiltonian is solved using the atomic solution that is embedded into a Bethe lattice. This model explains the experimental results as the resistivity as a function of temperature for different concentrations of ions of La, as well as, the optical properties of the pure system. The Anderson localization is analyzed studying the electric conductivity of the system. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to study the property of a system described by the Falicov- Kimball Hamiltonian. This Hamiltonian has been used to study the valence and metal-insulator transitions in Transitions Metal and Rare Earth compounds. In this model, the character of these transitions is still not well understood, since it is very dependent of the approximation used. We study the Falicov-Kimball Hamiltonian without spin. The conduction band is exactly described since we show its equivalence with the problem of an alloy. The f states are studied using the equation of motion for the Green functions, decoupling them in a way defined as the Dynamic Narrowing Approximation(DNA). We study the occupation of the local states as a function of energy and other electronic properties. For an alloy the interplay between the electronic correlation and disorder is analized. The different phases that appear in the system, as metallic and Anderson and Mott insulating, are investigated as a function of the parameters that define the system.

Propriedades termodinâmicas do Modelo de Falicov-Kimball de duas impurezas sem spin / Thermodynamical properties of the Falicov-Kimbal Model with two spinless impurities

Ramos, Luís Roberto 29 November 2002 (has links)
In this work, we study the Falicov-Kimball model with two localized spinless impurities hybridized with conduction electrons of a host metal, therefore, valence fluctuation is intrinsic to the model. The conduction states are also electrostatically scattered whenever a charge is present em the local levels of the impurities. The study was realized computing thermodynamics properties of the model, more specifically, we analyze the temperature dependent specific heat end charge susceptibility for many different parameters of the model. The Numerical Renormalization Group with two discretization parameters is used to obtain the spectrum of the model, from what the thermodynamics is obtained. We discuss the importance of going beyond the usual approximation that projects all moment at the Fermi Level. We begun our study of the thermodynamical properties analyzing values of the parameters space, where the model becomes quadratic (that is, where hybridization or Coulomb scattering are absent), and thus simple interpretations of the data are possible. We verified, for example, that for non-zero hybridization, the system shows Fermi liquid behavior at low temperature. The Wilson ratio, defined here with the charge susceptibility instead of magnetic one, has the universal value R = 1, whenever the hybridization is present. For some choices of the model parameters the model behaviors like heavy fermion.

The Ministry of Dan Kimball: A Model for Reaching Emerging Generations

Ring, Blake Thomas 14 December 2011 (has links)
THE MINISTRY OF DAN KIMBALL: A MODEL FOR REACHING EMERGING GENERATIONS Blake Thomas Ring, Ph.D. The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2011 Chair: Dr. Charles E. Lawless, Jr. This dissertation examines the ministry of Dan Kimball to determine if his ministry is a contributing model for effective ministry to emerging generations. Chapter 1 begins with an examination of the landscape of North American Christianity, seeking to demonstrate that the church is struggling to reach and retain emerging generations. It establishes the need for exploring effective ministry models and presents Kimball's ministry as a possible model for effective ministry to emerging generations. Chapter 2 provides a biographical account of Kimball's life. His adolescence, college years, conversion, pastoral ministry, and roles in the ECM and contemporary Christianity receive examination. Chapter 3 examines an evangelical theological taxonomy, or classification, of Kimball. Attention is given to his theological presuppositions and his doctrinal beliefs regarding Scripture, Christology, the gospel, and Ecclesiology. Chapter 4 explores Kimball's methodological framework. Attention is given to those presuppositions that guide his methodology. His approach to evangelism, discipleship, worship, and preaching are examined. Chapter 5 critiques Kimball's theology and methodology, ascertaining positive and negative contributions. Further consideration is given to the types of adjustments traditional churches might adopt as they engage emerging culture. Chapter 6 summarizes Kimball's involvement in the ECM and his contribution to emerging generational ministry, while also identifying areas of further study regarding Kimball's ministry.

The solar radiation is verified through the temperature difference between the sensible elements covered by absorbing (black) and reflecting (white) pigmentations of the incoming radiation. The photoacoustic technique was used to optimize the choice of the pigments. Methodologies associated with linearity, thermo-variation, sensibility, response time and distance are also presented. To correctly classify the results, the international standard ISO 9060 as well as indicative parameters of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) are used. In addition a system of data acquisition of two channels with 12 bits, constructed during the this time, was used to measure the global solar radiation on the ground by the pyrometer and also by another pyrometer certified in the case of Keep & zonen. The results statistically show, through the hypothesis test presented here, that both equipments find population average with 95% of correctness / Nesse trabalho foi desenvolvido, testado, calibrado e classificado um prot?tipo de piran?metro, baseado no cl?ssico modelo Kimball-Hobbs.

Extending dimensional modeling through the abstraction of data relationships and development of the semantic data warehouse

Hart, Robert 04 December 2017 (has links)
The Kimball methodology, often referred to as dimensional modelling, is well established in data warehousing and business intelligence as a highly successful means for turning data into information. Yet weaknesses exist in the Kimball approach that make it difficult to rapidly extend or interrelate dimensional models in complex business areas such as Health Care. This Thesis looks at the development of a methodology that will provide for the rapid extension and interrelation of Kimball dimensional models. This is achieved through the use of techniques similar to those employed in the semantic web. These techniques allow for rapid analysis and insight into highly variable data which previously was difficult to achieve. / Graduate

An Analysis of the Speaking Style of Heber C. Kimball: Mormon Leader

O'Connor, James Francis 01 January 1978 (has links) (PDF)
The primary function of this thesis was to determine, through the analysis of three randomly selected speeches, the speaking style of Heber C. Kimball. The selected speeches were presented in three different utah locations, and they covered a span of nine years (1856-65). All three speeches were presented to a Mormon audience and were religious in nature. Seven elements of style have been used for the analysis of the three speeches. They are: accuracy, clarity, propriety, economy, force, striking quality, and liveliness. It was determined that President Kimball's speaking style was weak in the areas of accuracy and clarity. In the areas of economy and propriety his style was good. In terms of liveliness, Kimball's speaking style was excellent. Heber C. Kimball's speaking style excelled in the areas of force and striking quality. All three speeches have a superior representation of force and the striking quality. In consideration of the historical setting of the three speeches, it was determined that Heber Chase Kimball was a very effective speaker.
