Redes de comunicação pública, visibilidade e permanência do acontecimento público Tragédia Kiss (Santa Maria, Brasil, 2013) / Public communication networks, visibility and permanence of the kiss nightclub tragedy public event (Santa Maria, Brazil, 2013)Kegler, Bruno January 2016 (has links)
This study has as central themes the public event notions and the public communication. The research problem is intended to analyze the communication networks configuration that make up the public event, formed from the actuation borderline issues between public and private interests. The hypothesis that guides this research is that the visibility and permanence of Kiss Nightclub Tragedy public event are supported by Networks of Public Communication, as they potentiate the debate on responsibility, judgment, legislation and State assistance to survivors and families of the victims from the tragedy. Between desired and unwanted visibilities, pacts and disputes are laid down in the nodal points where the subjectivities of the interlocutors are inserted. In this sense, the overall research objective is: to analyze the Public Communication Networks configuration on the Kiss Nightclub Tragedy. The specific objectives are: a) identify the main institutions and actors of the event from their own connection/ how they have been affected / accountable; b) identify the constituent visibility process of the public event Kiss Nightclub Tragedy; c) identify the dynamics of communication processes based around issues of public interest related to Kiss Nightclub Tragedy; d) identify structuring episodes of the event, of which derive from the issues triggered by the actors in network communication processes; e) define axes\ structural categories that allow the analysis of the public event configuration from the Public Communication Networks. The thesis is structured in three parts: first, the description of the research object is carried out with discrimination of the Kiss Nightclub Tragedy, the event chronology, the relationship with similar tragedies and legal proceedings in course. The second part, with the theoretical framework, is divided into three chapters. In the first, there are different meanings of public - in dichotomous opposition with the private -, aimed at delineating normatively the horizon tension between the terms, in the communication processes established between the actors. In the second chapter, there are the public sphere notions, visibility sphere and public discussion, public opinion, public - sociability; public communication and public communication networks. The last theoretical chapter is devoted to understanding the public event; and the impact of collective death. In the third part, there are the methodological references, formed by historical and descriptive research, based on genealogy, and documentary research technique, which resulted in the data collection that served the analysis; then the analysis of the functioning of the Kiss Nightclub Tragedy public event networks, from the visibility and permanence categories. The results point to the confirmation of the hypothesis, because they show the maintenance of the debate through the networks' activity, in traditional and alternative media.

KISS-Tree: Smart Latch-Free In-Memory Indexing on Modern ArchitecturesKissinger, Thomas, Schlegel, Benjamin, Habich, Dirk, Lehner, Wolfgang 04 June 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Growing main memory capacities and an increasing number of hardware threads in modern server systems led to fundamental changes in database architectures. Most importantly, query processing is nowadays performed on data that is often completely stored in main memory. Despite of a high main memory scan performance, index structures are still important components, but they have to be designed from scratch to cope with the specific characteristics of main memory and to exploit the high degree of parallelism. Current research mainly focused on adapting block-optimized B+-Trees, but these data structures were designed for secondary memory and involve comprehensive structural maintenance for updates.
In this paper, we present the KISS-Tree, a latch-free inmemory index that is optimized for a minimum number of memory accesses and a high number of concurrent updates. More specifically, we aim for the same performance as modern hash-based algorithms but keeping the order-preserving nature of trees. We achieve this by using a prefix tree that incorporates virtual memory management functionality and compression schemes. In our experiments, we evaluate the KISS-Tree on different workloads and hardware platforms and compare the results to existing in-memory indexes. The KISS-Tree offers the highest reported read performance on current architectures, a balanced read/write performance, and has a low memory footprint.

From The taming of the shrew to Kiss me Kate : the changing fortunes of Katherine, the shrewEdgar, Patricia January 1976 (has links)
William Shakespeare's play, The Taming of the Shrew has a varied and interesting stage history. Beginning with Fletcher's The Tamer Tarn'd (1633), a sequel to Shakespeare, there have been many adaptations of the plot in farce, opera and poetic drama, including an American musical comedy. This thesis will follow the stage history of The Taming of the Shrew, focussing on the dramatic development and treatment of the heroine, Katherine.
Shakespeare's shrew, Katherine, is much more than a traditional shrew stereotype. Her dramatic presentation in language and action has enough depth and subtlety to provoke much conflicting criticism and interpretation. What motivates her anger? Why is she physically abusive? Is she subdued, tamed or reeducated?
Enough clues are present in the play to provide for interesting debate. The first part of the thesis is concerned with examining Shakespeare's dramatic concept of the shrew to establish the scope and range of Katherine's personality and her response to Petruchio's taming tricks.
In later versions of the play, the character of Katherine receives a variety of dramatic treatments. Some playwrights reduce Katherine's dramatic function to a mere outline. Others accentuate her physically abusive and sharp-tongued qualities. Yet another variation is a softening of the shrewish disposition
to allow for a sentimental treatment of shrew conditioning. The dramatic vigour of the shrew character is constant, but variations in plot, language and thematic idea result in very different and entertaining shrew types.
This stage history of The Taming of the Shrew as it relates to the heroine, Katherine, includes an analysis of the following plays. The Tamer Tarn'd (1633), a sequel by John Fletcher serves to comment on Shakespeare's Kate by direct allusion and by dramatic contrast. Sauny the Scot (1667) is a bastardised Restoration version in which the shrew is a farcical stereotype
who must suffer extensive physical humiliation for her excessive displays of nastiness. Catherine and Petruohio (1756) is David Garrick's miniature version of Shakespeare which stresses the farce, simplifying the play and the dramatic impact of Catherine. John Tobin's The Honeymoon (1805) is a poetic attempt to re-create The Shrew. The heroine in this play suffers the sin of pride, but is won over to domesticity and humility by love and rural surroundings provided by a gentle tamer. The thesis also considers the nineteenth century attempts to revive the Shakespeare original which struggled unsuccessfully with the popularity of the Garrick version. Some of the musical adaptations of The Shrew provide a rich variety of shrew heroines in very different settings. Included are a ballad opera, A Cure for a Scold (1735), a German opera by Hermann Goetz, The Taming of the Shrew (1878), and a modern
musical comedy version, Kiss Me Kate (1948).
These adaptations and variant versions provide a veritable school of Katherines. The streak of genius in Shakespeare's dramatic idea of a shrew, who, even in the realm of farce is seen as a human being with the capacity to feel, change and grow, becomes very strongly apparent as Shakespeare's Kate is measured against the shrew heroines in these derivative plays. The contrasting shrew types, though interesting and pleasing in their own way, never quite acquire the stature, poise, wit, intelligence and humour which characterise Shakespeare's attractive Kate. For Kate's civilising and learning encounter with Petruchio is not the brutalising, punitive or subjugating ritual of tradition; amidst the slapstick of farce, Kate, with her Petruchio, provides a unique variation of the shrew heroine. She is not conquered. She changes herself. This is her distinction and her strength and the mark of Shakespeare's human touch. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

Membrane trafficking is essential for neuronal function: from growth of neurons and synapse formation to recycling of synaptic vesicles and receptors, questions concerning exocytosis and endocytosis are stimulating neurobiology research. In particular, trafficking of glutamate receptors present in recycling endosomes (REs) is necessary for the expression of long term potentiation (LTP). To investigate the mechanism of exocytosis in dendrites, we have imaged cultured rat hippocampal neurons transfected with transferrin receptor, a classical marker of REs, tagged with phluorin. As for AMPA receptors or β2-adrenegric receptors, single exocytic events has revealed two main behaviors: in most cases, receptors diffuse quickly in the plasma membrane after exocytosis (discharge events), but receptors can also remain clustered (display events). Using fast extracellular pH changes around the recorded cell, we show that for display events exocytosis is transient: after a few seconds (median 2.6 s) receptors are internalized. Moreover, using two color imaging of single exocytosis events with markers of neuronal compartments, we found that Rab11 is enriched at the exocytosis site, confirming the endosomal origin of the vesicles. Overexpression of a dominant negative form of Rab11 known to impair LTP decreases selectively the frequency of discharge events. As SNARE proteins are involved in virtually all membrane fusion processes, we investigated the role of Vamp proteins in somatodendritic exocytosis events. We found that Vamp4, unlike Vamp2 or Vamp7, is enriched in TfR containing compartments and can undergo exocytosis at high frequency and is required for TfR exocytosis.

Eriksson, Lisa January 2013 (has links)
The kiss of the spider woman, novel written by Argentinian novelist Manuel Puig, is the story oftwo prisoners in a prison in Buenos Aires during the military dictatorship. This thesis will focus onthe feminine identity of protagonist Molina, a homosexual man who choses to regard himself as awoman. The aim of this thesis is to examine his construction of the feminine identity, and connectthat construction with feminist and queer theories of gender as socially constructed, opposed toinnate or given by biological gender.

Opal Clark on Directing Stop Kiss An Exploration of the Directorial ProcessClark, Opal 01 August 2017 (has links)
The intent of this thesis and thesis project was to execute a successful run of the play, Stop Kiss by Diana Son while achieving the playwright’s intended message. Opal Clark directed this production of Stop Kiss at East Tennessee State University under special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc. It was performed to sold out audiences in ETSU Theatre and Dance Studio 205 October 2-7, 2017. The play explores experiences and hostility toward same sex couples, their relationships with one another and how one individual discovers sexuality. The discovery and actualization of the characters’ struggles were communicated in the play using student performers and crew members. The project was documented through a series of journal entries written by the director, who was guided by mentor Professor Robert Funk. The director details the exploration and process in daily journal entries. Additionally, a feminist criticism of the script further explores the portrayal of the plotline. The consequences and implications of dramatic choices within the context of the play are analyzed within this section.
