The Impact of Knowledge Resources on Organizational PerformanceHsiao, Rong-te 08 August 2005 (has links)
The proverb ¡§Knowledge is power¡¨ points out the importance of knowledge. The advancement of information technology and increased competition among enterprises has pushed many researchers to study knowledge management. Most organizations understand the importance of knowledge and treat knowledge as a vital resource. However, it is not quite clear whether knowledge resource can increase organizational performance in the constantly changing environment.
Although literature has indicated the key role of knowledge resources and their impact on organizational performance, empirical study is still lacking in this research domain. Hence, the purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between knowledge resources and organizational performance.
An empirical study was conducted to evaluate the research model. Major findings include: (1) The degree of knowledge documentation has significant positive effect on the market performance of an organization; (2) Organizational culture and the degree of information technology applications have significant positive effects on both management performance and market performance. Organizational structure has significant positive effects on management performance, but the explicit-orientation of knowledge management strategy has negative effects on both management performance and market performance; (3) The nature of organizational knowledge has a moderating effect on the effect of the degree of information technology applications on management performance. Our findings can help managers and chief knowledge officers better the nature of organizational knowledge and organizational performance in order to cope with the dynamic environment.

Extracting Episodic Knowledge from Documents to Support Decision MakingChuang, Kun-Han 27 July 2006 (has links)
Knowledge management is an important weapon for business competition. Many organizations are adopting knowledge management systems. For knowledge management, document management is its key foundation. There is a large amount of procedural knowledge existing in decision documents. This knowledge can illustrate the process and considerations in a decision situation, called episodic. The episodic knowledge can help decision makers understand historical decision process and considerations for future decision making. Therefore, how to discover decision episodes from existing documents is a major research issue in knowledge management.
This research proposes a method for episode mining that integrates automatic document summary techniques, knowledge ontology, and index structures to build the relations and processes of events, and use the Gantt Chart and Flow Chart to portray event processes. We build a prototype system and use a news event as our example to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed approach and demonstrate the results.

Constructing Directed Domain Knowledge Structure Map Using Association Rule - An Example of MIS DomainCheng, Pai-shung 31 August 2006 (has links)
In the coming knowledge-based economy era, knowledge structure map (KSM) has becoming more and more important. If learners doing learning without the support of knowledge structure map, it will cause learning alone problem. In order to construct a real KSM, we targeted the MIS domain. By using the National Dissertation and Thesis Abstract System as input source, we first extract different research subjects from keywords and then calculate the relation strength between each keyword pairs. An automatic approach has been developed for constructing KSM for different periods of time. The constructed KSM can help learners to reduce learning alone and provide a good reference for new researchers to seek for related research directions.
The proposed method can also be applied to enterprises. They can adopt this method to construct any specific KSM corresponding to their professional domain, the constructed KSM would help new employee to learn better. Furthermore, with the support of KSM, CEO can make a better decision as the KSM would contain internal and external competitive advantages about future directions.

Effects of Prior Knowledge on Cooperative Learning Outcome.Chuang, Yu-chen 19 July 2007 (has links)
Cooperative learning is a major teaching method which is used by many instructors as their teaching framework. It has been proven better than individual and competitive teaching methods by raising higher group achievements and individual achievements with more diverse reasoning and logic thinking, and more creative ideas. Many researchers make their efforts in promoting the outcomes of cooperative learning from different viewpoints. One of them is Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), which emphasizes that teachers and learners with higher capability can support other learners to develop their ZPD through proper scaffolding. Prior Knowledge plays an important role in scaffolding. In order to maximize the effect of scaffolding, learners supported by scaffolding must possess enough prior knowledge. At the same time, teachers must consider the whole teaching progress and it is difficult to be aware of every individual learner¡¦s learning progress and offer adaptive assistance to each of them. Thus, we propose two mechanisms: knowledge diagnostic and learning material developed by using IT techniques to promote learners¡¦ prior knowledge in a specific domain. Students were given different mechanisms and divided into twenty groups to resolve their cooperative tasks. Their cooperative learning outcomes were measured by tasks achievement and perceived of cooperation process that is composed of perceived of cooperation extent, perceived of task conflict and perceived of emotional conflict. The result shows that the combination of knowledge diagnostic and learning material can promote students¡¦ prior knowledge in the domain we selected. The result of cooperative learning outcomes shows that there is a positive relationship between prior knowledge and task achievement, and a positive relationship between prior knowledge and perceived of task conflict, but there is no significant relationship between prior knowledge and perceived of cooperation extent and nor between prior knowledge and perceived of emotional conflict.

Using Fuzzy Rule Induction for Mining Classification KnowledgeChen, Kun-Hsien 02 August 2000 (has links)
With the computerization of businesses, more and more data are generated and stored in databases for many business applications. Finding interesting patterns among those data may lead to useful knowledge that provides competitive advantage in business. Knowledge discovery in database has thus become an important issue to help business acquire knowledge that assists managerial and operational work. Among many types of knowledge, classification knowledge is widely used. Most classification rules learned by induction algorithms are in the crisp form. Fuzzy linguistic representation of rules, however, is much closer to the way human reasons. The objective of this research is to propose a method to mine classification knowledge from the database with fuzzy descriptions. The procedure contains five steps, starting from data preparation to rule pruning. A rule induction algorithm, RITIO, is employed to generate the classification rules. Fuzzy inference mechanism that includes fuzzy matching and output reasoning is specified to yield the output class. An experiment is conducted using several databases to show advantages of this work. The proposed method is justified with good system performance. It can be easily implemented in various business applications on classification tasks.

Constructing Knowledge Map from the WebSun, Chen-Kai 18 July 2002 (has links)
Abstract
Knowledge map, like the ¡§Yellow Pages¡¨ of knowledge, indicates where knowledge is and how to get it, but doesn¡¦t contain knowledge. The principal purpose of a knowledge map is to show domain expert when someone need expertise. The principal purpose of a knowledge map is to enhance the efficiency to find the exact expertise someone need. In this digital age, it is a trend for e-learning learners to search knowledge on the Internet. However, when learners try to explore knowledge, they will confront the two important problems:¡ucognitive disorientation¡v and ¡uinformation overloading¡v. This research bases on the function of search engine on the Internet, extract the keywords on the web document, and then analyze the relationship between the keywords appearing on web page. So, we can develop the process of knowledge mapping to construct integrated Knowledge Map (KM). It can reduce the cost and time that is essential for the traditional method. With guidance of the KM, learners can find specific knowledge or discover knowledge relationships more effectively when exploring on the Internet.
The contributions of this survey are as followings:
Collecting keywords of knowledge automatically,
Constructing knowledge relation graph,
Constructing knowledge hierarchy graph, and
Constructing knowledge time trend graph.
