Mitt arbete har tagit avstamp i min vilja att lyfta fram unika egenskaper i musikverk. Flerdelade musikverk (exempelvis sviter) består ofta av delar (exempelvis satser) som kontrasterar mot varandra på något sätt. Det är just dessa kontraster som jag intresserat mig för. Arbetets syfte är att undersöka hur jag ska kunna uppnå musikaliskt kontrasterande resultat med hjälp av en regelstyrd kompositionsmetod. Metoden utgår från att man skapar särskilda ramar för varje del (sats) i ett musikverk i kompositionsprocessen, där ramarna för de enskilda delarna även fungerar som förbud för de andra delarna. Dessa förbud är huvudfokus för metoden, och därför kallar jag metoden "antikomposition". För att kunna utveckla metoden har jag komponerat en 25 minuter lång orkestersvit i fyra satser, där jag utnyttjar en kompositionsprocess jag använt mig av tidigare. Jag har även läst på om andra kompositionsmetoder för att skapa en metod som utgår från relevanta arbetssätt i komposition. Egna analyser av fyra andra verk har hjälpt mig hantverksmässigt, konstnärligt men också med material som underlättat att kommunicera mina tankar. För att undvika "blindhet" för min egen musik har jag dessutom tagit hjälp av andra tonsättare som kommenterat mitt verk.

Utgångspunkten för detta examensarbete var att utveckla en kompositionsmetod med utgångspunkt i en tavla för att skapa en ”simulerad synestesi”. För att skapa kompositionsmetoden har tonsättare med synestesi intervjuats samt har en undersökning om hur en grupp människor tittar på en tavla utförts. Ursprungligen så fanns det bara en vilja hos mig att komponera ett stycke baserat på en tavla tillsammans med en nyfikenhet kring fenomenet synestesi. Under examensarbetets gång har kompositionsmetoden samt undersökningen utformats. Detta resulterade i ett två komponerade stycken och båda styckena utgick ifrån varsin synestesi.

In this thesis the author´s aim was to create new music using folk melodies as an inspiration and during the composition process explore the correlation between an intuitive and a rational approach. From beginning creating music at an early age, the author has always had a strong connection with the intuitive approach which, during the years in the bachelor program in composition, has been challenged in different ways. Besides a curiosity about the correlation between the rational and the intuitive approach, a wish to incorporate folk melodies in new music became a background to this thesis project. The method consisted of composing two scores, each according to a pre-planned method, for both string quartet and string orchestra where two different folk melodies were chosen for each composition. By composing music according to the methods, combining both folk melodies and different compositional tools, the author discovered how the rational and the intuitive approach effected the composition process. One discovery was the importance of allowing the intuitive approach during the first stadium of the composition process which made it easier to adopt the two methods. Through the discoveries that were made the author deepened the knowledge in using different approaches to develop the musical language.
