The Typology of Focus Marking in South Asian Englishes

Lange, Claudia, Bernaisch, Tobias 16 June 2017 (has links) (PDF)
The emergence of grammatical norms in postcolonial varieties of English has been argued to manifest itself in quantitative preferences rather than in categorical distinctions (cf. Schneider 2007: 46). Several studies on Indian English, however, have shown that this South Asian variety has developed innovative uses, i.e. marked qualitative differences, for the additive focus marker also and the restrictive focus markers only and itself as presentational focus markers (Bhatt 2000, Lange 2007, Balasubramanian 2009), e.g. Since 7 am itself, schoolchildren started to reach the venue smartly dressed and armed with their queries and waited patiently for more than two hours for the programme to begin. (IN_TI_38032) Number-related mismatches in agreement between the antecedent in plural and the focus marker in singular have also been attested. This structural phenomenon may be indicative of a grammaticalization process of the focus marker itself to an invariant focus particle as illustrated in the following example. He said the temporary peace achieved by leaders of the country was a victory for the Sri Lankan Security Forces itself as it was gained by the Security Forces at the expense of their lives. (LK_DN_2004-07-02) The present study is concerned with variation and convergence in the use of focus marking with itself in South Asian Englishes, i.e. Bangladeshi English, Indian English, Maldivian English, Nepali English, Pakistani English and Sri Lankan English. On the basis of the South Asian varieties of English (SAVE) corpus, an 18-million word web-based newspaper corpus featuring acrolectal language use of the varieties under scrutiny (cf. Bernaisch et al. 2011), we report on the pervasiveness of (presentational) focus marking with itself. Although the novel usage of itself as illustrated above certainly represents a feature of South Asian English, there is a clear pattern characterised by unity and diversity with regard to the individual varieties of English in South Asia.Despite the pan-South Asian presence of presentational itself, quantity, grammaticalization processes and structural combinability provide grounds to argue that presentational itself is more firmly rooted in some South Asian varieties of English (e.g. Indian English and Sri Lankan English) than in others (Bangladeshi English or Maldivian English).

Detektor plagiátů textových dokumentů / Text document plagiarism detector

Kořínek, Lukáš January 2021 (has links)
This diploma thesis is concerned with research on available methods of plagiarism detection and then with design and implementation of such detector. Primary aim is to detect plagiarism within academic works or theses issued at BUT. The detector uses sophisticated preprocessing algorithms to store documents in its own corpus (document database). Implemented comparison algorithms are designed for parallel execution on graphical processing units and they compare a single subject document against all other documents within the corpus in the shortest time possible, enabling near real-time detection while maintaining acceptable quality of output.

Paralelní korpusový manažer / Parallel Corpus Manager

Kouřil, Jan January 2011 (has links)
The goal of diploma project was to implement parallel corpus manager, which can align parallel texts in different languages and insert them into corpus, where several more processing functions are provided. Program provides possibilities of automatic text alignment and its interactive editing. These aligned texts are then inserted into corpus. Program can work with multiple corpora, parallel corpus is allways identified by a couple of languages. In corpus, there are possibilities to search by many categories, view and edit particular selections, lemmatize and morphologically tag given texts, sort selections, import and export data, in many ways edit corpus for further easy navigation and add new expressions to managed dictionaries. Particular chapters describe introduction to corpus problematics, theory of aligning parallel texts, morphological text tagging and lemmatization, external tools used in program, most common subtitle formats and implementation solution of particular problems.

Syntaktische Strukturen gesprochener Sprache in Videomaterial für DaF. Eine korpusbasierte Untersuchung

Tiegelkamp, Vera 28 November 2014 (has links)
Kodifikované anglické přejímky v současné francouzštině a jejich percepce rodilými mluvčími / Codified English loanwords in contemporary French and their perception by native speakers

Graciasová, Jitka January 2021 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with English loanwords that were integrated into French during the past 5 years and became a part of metalinguistic corpus. There are two aims, on one hand, we will analyze English loanwords that entered general language dictionary in the past 5 years. On the other hand, using sociolinguistic research, we will try to find how native speakers perceive given loanwords. The text is divided into two parts, theoretical and practical. The theoretical part characterizes loanwords, describes individual types of loanwords, and discusses their general characteristics and codification. The practical part is dedicated to classification of loanwords codified in the given metalinguistic corpus and deals with their perception by native speakers. Key words: anglicisms, English loanwords, French, language borrowing, codification, metalinguistic corpus

Mluvenost v dialogické elektronické komunikaci / Orality in Dialogic Computer-Mediated Communication

Laubeová, Zuzana January 2020 (has links)
The subject of this thesis is orality in informal dialogic computer-mediated communication (henceforth CMC). This type of communication is represented by internet discussions, discussion fora, and Facebook posts. All these three genres are compared with informal spoken face-to-face dialogues. The data are covered by the Koditex corpus, which contains the CMC genres, and the Ortofon corpus of spoken language. The term orality can refer both to the realized communication form - spoken or written (so- called media orality) and to the summary of linguistic characteristics associated with the prototypical informal spoken dialogue (so-called conceptual orality). This thesis focuses only on conceptual orality, which is based on nine language features divided into the three following areas: dialogicity, spontaneity, and fulfilment of pragmatic needs of communication participants. The analyses show significant similarity between the functional use of features in both spoken and written communication. This applies primarily to the features associated with spontaneity (repetition of the same words, the presence of word fragments, typos and misspellings) and the fulfilment of pragmatic needs (discourse markers, pronoun non-dropping, iteration of graphemes). It follows that the selected CMC genres appropriately...

Zpracování latinismů v německo-českém překladovém slovníku / Latinisms in contemporary German language and their lexicographic treatment in a bilingual dictionary

Hlaváčková, Michaela January 2011 (has links)
A role of Latinisms in contemporary German language is the subject of this thesis. The thesis has been elaborated on the basis of findings acquired in the course of drafting dictionary entries within a project focused on development of the German-Czech Academic Dictionary. The role of the Latinisms within the German language vocabulary is analysed on the background of a confrontation of entries included in the monolingual dictionary Duden-Deutsches Universalwörterbuch with a structuralist theory of centre and periphery of language. The analyses, elaborated on the data obtained from the Mannheim German Reference Corpus (DeReKo) and the collocation database (CCDB) developed on the basis of the Corpus, are used for the purpose of the confrontation with the above- mentioned premise of the central or peripheral position of Latin loan words.
