Automated Identification of Adverbial Clauses in Child Language Samples

Clark, Jessica Celeste 10 March 2009 (has links) (PDF)
In recent years, computer software has been used to assist in the analysis of clinical language samples. However, this software has been unable to accurately identify complex syntactic structures such as adverbial clauses. Complex structures, including the adverbial clause, are of interest in child language due to differences in the development of this structure between children with and without language impairment. The present study investigated the accuracy of new software, called Cx, in identifying adverbial clauses. Two separate collections of language samples were used. One collection included 10 children with language impairment, 10 age-matched peers, and 10 language-matched peers. A second collection contained language from 174 students in first grade, third grade, fifth grade, and junior college. There was high total agreement between computerized and manual analysis with an overall Kappa level of .895.

Referování o významných krizových událostech v českých denících na příkladu mexické chřipky / Reporting of global crisis events in Czech print media based on example of Swine Flu

Černá, Lucie January 2011 (has links)
This Diploma thesis deals with some aspects of four chosen Czech daily newspapers referring about the outbreak and early development of events connected with one of the latest significant global crisis - the swine flu, which had broken out in 2009. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with some characteristics of crisis and basic concepts, which might be associated with their media coverage. In the practical part, it deals with the way, how the Czech dailies covered first two weeks of spreading of the disease. At the beginning, the thesis introduces a quantitative profile of the analyzed sample and shows both physical and verbal range of it. The second part is focused on the main topics, which were chosen by all daily newspapers to refer about the swine flu. Those, which did not make it to the main thematic line presented before, are also shortly mentioned in the chapter. In the third part, the thesis follows the main motives appearing in the images that accompanied the news with the chosen topic and also discovers how the disease was "objectified". Finally, language analysis discovering some specific subjective language characteristics referring to a potential personal opinion included by individual authors, or the way how the authors dealt with the coverage of the potential future development...

Jazykový rozbor vybraných památek tzv. Pinvičkova sborníku / Language analysis of the selected texts of the Pinvicka collection

Klubalová, Jana January 2011 (has links)
This thesis deals with the language analysis of the Tandarias poem published as a part of Pinvicka collection which was written in the 2nd half of 15th century by Jan Pinvicka z Domazlic. The attention is paid to the description of ortography and all language dimensions. The main aim of this thesis is to describe the language statement of the relic and evaluate the influence of the previous versions of theTandarias poem on the examined version published in Pinvicka collection. We found out that it is not possible to give an evidence that the examined poem is significantly influenced by the language usus of the 14th century when this subject was translated to Czech. But we claim that some of the language phenomena refering to older language usus can be explained with the personal language manner of author. Nevertheless the influence of the original German writing is obvious in the lexical dimension. The addressing of the writing to the bourgeoisie and other lower social classes is supported with the tendency of the language of the text to approach to the spoken form of language.

No. of bitstreams: 1 2529.pdf: 1199163 bytes, checksum: def7609b8e93f447e3bf0ec0edd2eccc (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-07-03 / This work investigates the process of appropriation of secondary discourse genres (Bakhtin, 1992) in institutional contexts as a part of processes of social participation. Our main objective was to describe and to understand how students of the Vestibular preparatory Course (Cidade Aracy II neighborhood, in São Carlos) appropriate themselves of discursive and textual mechanisms that imply the meaning manners in the argumentative discourse genres, and as these mechanisms interconnect with the social and discursive structures, as ways of participation in the institutional literacy practices. We consider three theoretical assumptions: discourse genres studies into process of teaching/ learning of Portuguese language; the three-dimensional concept of the language of the English linguist Norman Fairclough (2001); and, the Literacy Studies. The work focuses on the access and students participation in different literacy practices and on the textual elements that they integrate into the textual production of those social contexts. The data collected through semi-structured questionnaire and the textual production of the subject of research demonstrate that the students are involved in an initial process of appropriation of the genres of the institutional sphere. We are referring to the knowledge of certain social rules and specific linguistic and discursive of the social sphere (i.e. the Vestibular exam, the University). The results of this research point to the fact that the teacher, as literacy agent, needs to focus on social activities to provide an enlargement of the students previous knowledge, besides creating opportunities so the students to participate in social reading and writing practices of the different social spheres. Thus, through the qualitative research, we intend to offer subsidies for: a) a responsive reflection concerning the school practices and the processes that involve the production of argumentative texts for the Vestibular exam; b) the understanding in the dialectic relationship among social and linguistic elements in the teaching and learning process of Portuguese language; c) the understanding of the inherent subject to the social mobility, to the social identity construction and to the practices of sense production in the speech and in the writing concerning specific social contexts.

Joanilho, Mariangela Peccioli Galli 27 July 2005 (has links)
Orientador: Eduardo Roberto Junqueira Guimarães / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-05T01:34:19Z (GMT). Esperamos, assim, tornar visíveis algumas questões que constituem os domínios dessa relação particular de construção do sentido / Abstract: Our purpose is to discuss the routes of configuration of senses of the mother tongue in Brazil, based on a study of texts written by Brazilian authors ¿ publicists and non-publicists, in the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo, by the end of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth century. Our attempt is to understand how the designation is established: on the one hand, the senses about the language were created by naturalistic metaphors; on the other hand, we intend to show that the language was a workspace in which the construction of the identity as well as of the national subject were secure. It is possible to say that, based on this parallel, differences and/or regularities emerge which, in this case, make it possible to observe the foundation of a discourse about Brazilian identities, based on the understanding of the way the enunciative positions are supported when one speaks about the subject in the proposed period. As for that, it is possible to anticipate the fact that the senses about the subject are considered a double designation movement, in which the former coincides with the one that was denominated by approximation (and its various parallels) between the meanings of ¿foreigner¿ and ¿Brazilian¿, in the national ground. These two senses will be dealt with by those of language and school, in the constitution of ¿civility¿ and ¿progress¿ ¿for the Brazil of tomorrow¿. This research was carried out essentially in the theoretical framework of the historical studies of the enunciation in their approximations with the French discourse analysis. We were based on two premises to analyze the enunciative and discourse constitution of the metaphorical sense in the meaning of the Brazilian mother tongue. We hope to bring to light some issues that constitute the domains of this particular relation of the construction of senses / Doutorado / Doutor em Linguística

Scoring Sentences Developmentally: An Analog of Developmental Sentence Scoring

Seal, Amy 01 January 2002 (has links) (PDF)
A variety of tools have been developed to assist in the quantification and analysis of naturalistic language samples. In recent years, computer technology has been employed in language sample analysis. This study compares a new automated index, Scoring Sentences Developmentally (SSD), to two existing measures. Eighty samples from three corpora were manually analyzed using DSS and MLU and the processed by the automated software. Results show all three indices to be highly correlated, with correlations ranging from .62 to .98. The high correlations among scores support further investigation of the psychometric characteristics of the SSD software to determine its clinical validity and reliability. Results of this study suggest that SSD has the potential to compliment other analysis procedures in assessing the language development of young children.
