Svenskar går på stan men danskere går i byen : En jämförande analys av svenskt och danskt spatialt prepositionsbruk / Swedes go out ”on the town” while Danes go out ”in the town” : A comparative analysis of Swedish and Danish spatial use of prepositions

Hoff, Lena January 2019 (has links)

Information Structures in Notated Music: Statistical Explorations of Composers' Performance Marks in Solo Piano Scores

Buchanan, J. Paul 05 1900 (has links)
Written notation has a long history in many musical traditions and has been particularly important in the composition and performance of Western art music. This study adopted the conceptual view that a musical score consists of two coordinated but separate communication channels: the musical text and a collection of composer-selected performance marks that serve as an interpretive gloss on that text. Structurally, these channels are defined by largely disjoint vocabularies of symbols and words. While the sound structures represented by musical texts are well studied in music theory and analysis, the stylistic patterns of performance marks and how they acquire contextual meaning in performance is an area with fewer theoretical foundations. This quantitative research explored the possibility that composers exhibit recurring patterns in their use of performance marks. Seventeen solo piano sonatas written between 1798 and 1913 by five major composers were analyzed from modern editions by tokenizing and tabulating the types and usage frequencies of their individual performance marks without regard to the associated musical texts. Using analytic methods common in information science, the results demonstrated persistent statistical similarities among the works of each composer and differences among the work groups of different composers. Although based on a small sample, the results still offered statistical support for the existence of recurring stylistic patterns in composers' use of performance marks across their works.

Predicting weight loss in blogs using computerized text analysis

Chung, Cindy Kyuah 16 October 2009 (has links)
An increasing number of people are turning to online blogging communities devoted to self-change for smoking, shopping, and other behaviors. To understand processes underlying effective self-change, the current project tracked the language and social dynamics of a dieting blog community using computerized text analysis. Three research questions were asked: What predicts weight loss in blogs? What changes in blogging predict weight loss? Can we predict dropping out or successful weight loss based on the first two entries? A community of blogs devoted to weight loss was examined (n = 2530). Most bloggers were female, and on average, around 30 years old, approximately 200 pounds, with a goal weight of about 140 pounds. A sample of blogs by females that had blogged at least 15 entries within the first 15 weeks of blogging resulted in a total of 186 blogs, representing over 9,200 entries for analysis. Computerized text analysis was used to examine language for rates of self-focus, emotionality, cognitive processing, keeping food diaries, and social support. Rates of blogging were assessed by word counts, number of active weeks, and mean entries per week. Social support was assessed through the use of social words, the size of the social network, along with the positivity and negativity of the comments. The discrepancy between start and goal weight was also assessed. The results suggested that having larger weight loss goals and blogging about personal events was a more effective weight loss strategy than keeping an online food intake diary. The degree to which bloggers were socially integrated with the blog community was found to be a potent predictor of weight loss. Online components of behavioral treatment programs could encourage dieters to browse and comment on other dieters’ progress, and to share personal narratives rather than simply focusing on the benefits of food intake diaries, nutrition, and exercise. The current project points to the power of computerized text analytic tools to address important theoretical and practical social psychological issues that are evolving on the internet. Specifically, language analysis methods can identify which dimensions of blogging communities can help or hinder self-change processes. / text

The development of this project considers the teaching of Portuguese in Brazilian public schools; the work with normative grammar, which has presented a range of perspectives; the performance of teachers, divided on the issue of teaching grammar or not, how to teach and what to teach; the perspectives of grammar presented in didactic books, and the official guidelines on the teaching of Portuguese language. By reflecting on these issues and problematizing them under the bias of linguistic analysis, this research proposes alternatives to associate grammar teaching with social discursive practices. Having as the investigative locus sixth grade class of Elementary school of public school and the Portuguese language classroom, this project associates the teaching of word classes, specifically the noun and the adjective, to the textual genres short story and parody short story with regard to the reading, listening, writing and speaking skills of a leaner. The main goal of this interventionist project in the classroom is, starting from the genres tale and parody short story, to explore the function of the categories noun and adjective in the construction of the textual genre, presenting such word classes in a contextualized way. In order to achieve this, it is reflected on how they act in the construction of the narrative and descriptive sequences in the short story and the parody short story, considering the morphic, semantic and functional criteria, as well as how they act in orality, through storytelling, under the pragmatic aspect. It is believed that contextualizing grammar in the learning of the mother tongue, appropriating linguistic analysis practices with an emphasis on reflection and use, makes sense for the student beyond the school, creating a condition of efficient and conscious participation of the individual in the language social practices. Therefore, this research is based on the grammar teaching perspectives addressed by Antunes (2014) and Neves (2002, 2015); linguistic analysis by Franchi (1991), Geraldi (1997, 2010, 2014), Mendonça (2006) and Bezerra and Reinaldo (2013); analysis of word classes teaching by Pinilla (2007), Perini (2001, 2006) and Bagno (2011); textual genres by Schneuwly & Dolz (2004); action-research methodology by Thiollent (2006), Desroche (2006), Morin (2004) and Elliott (1997) and also linguistic analysis practices in textbooks by Sigiliano & Silva (2017). The application of the intervention, with principles of the didactic sequence, as well as the data of the written and oral production of the students revealed advances in regards to the appropriation of the genres short story and parody short story but also the use of the word classes noun and adjective for the construction of the narrative and descriptive sequences, confirming the initial hypothesis that the contextualized and reflective grammar teaching, through linguistic, epilinguistic and metalinguistic activities, may contribute to a learning process which is able to provide the students a greater ability to their school and non-school language practices.

Expresivita - způsoby a prostředky jejího vyjadřování v japonštině / Expressivity - ways and means of its expression in Japanese

Reichlová, Anna-Marie January 2016 (has links)
The present thesis is focused on what linguist Anna Wierzbicka defined as the characteristic features of Japanese language in relation to expressing emotions verbally, which is the essence of expressivity. The research is based on a Japanese speakers' conversations corpus created for the purposes of this thesis and which takes into account factors such as age, social status, gender and various circumstances in which the dialogues are taking place. The thesis examines the area of rather negative emotions. The primary aim of the thesis is to verify the assumptions made by Wierzbicka on the characteristics of Japanese using language analysis of the corpus, and adjust her findings as the case may be. In addition, the thesis will investigate and summarize the most prominent language strategies and means used in expressive communication by Japanese speakers and to determine possible socio-linguistic or cultural factors involved.

Styles de vie et façons de parler. Étude de quelques formes de discours dans différents milieux socio-culturels en Allemagne contemporaine / Life Styles and Ways of Speaking. A Study of Discursive Forms in Different Socio-Cultural Environments in Contemporary Germany

Jallerat, Britta 11 December 2012 (has links)
The objective of this doctoral dissertation is to bring together the different ideas of “style,” as employed in linguistics and sociology. Its intention is to shed light on the role that the linguist can play in understanding social phenomena. To do so, my interview-based investigation constitutes a large and various study, making possible an analysis of diverse social and discursive styles. To this effect, I’ve employed the concept of “style,” originally confined to writing, but which currently has an extensive use. I distinguish two recurrent meanings, the aesthetic and pragmatic, from which I propose my own definition applicable to oral language productions. The sociological concept of “life style” constitutes a central element of this work. This concept defines life style as based on the free choice of individuals. I interrogate the relationship between direct discourse and style envisioned from a sociological point of view (a “vector” of style) or a linguistic perspective (a stylistic process). Moreover, I analyze “preformed” or “prefabricated” language structures whose use is deployed as a direct discourse from a stylistic process, for it is the speaker who can freely choose this mode of expression. This dissertation thus argues for a better understanding of language phenomena through sociology, in particular thatof life styles. The linguist contributes also to human understanding while being a speaker and social actor.

Jazyková stránka vybrané staročeské památky / Linguistic aspect of the selected old Czech literary text

Mohlesová, Lucie January 2013 (has links)
The topic of this thesis is the linguistic analysis of the Apollonius of Tyre novel contained in the Pinvicka collection, which comes from the second half of the 15th century. During the creation of the thesis is used especially the qualitative textual analysis, which is in the major part of the thesis supplemented by the quantitative statistical analysis. Opening parts of the thesis represent general information about the Pinvicka collection, in which is contained the analysed literary landmark, and about the literary landmark itself. Follows the detailed analysis of the orthography and of all linguistic layers, i.e. phonology, morphology, syntax and word formation. Every linguistic layer and the orthography are elaborated in a separate chapter. At the end of each chapter is the summary of the achieved results, which includes also charts and tables. In the chapter, which is devoted to the orthography, is primarily payd attention to the speech sounds, for which is typical disunited way of transcript. In the phonological part are treated phonic changes, which are realized in the text. The morphological part of the thesis is concerned with representation of word classes and particulary with grammatical cathegories of nouns and verbs. In the chapter, which treats syntactic plane, are analysed compound...

Weil da so « jakommen Sie mal morgen » : étude discursive et syntaxique du discours rapporté en allemand oral contemporain / Discourse functions and syntactic forms of reported speech in spoken German

Aufray, Antoine 04 December 2010 (has links)
This study based on two corpora of oral communication (interviews and stand up comedy shows) investigates the functions and forms of reported speech in spoken German. We first present the classical and modern conceptualizations of reported speech as found in grammars of the German language, linguistic typology and in the more recent theories of J. Authier-Revuz, L. Rosier, and linguists of the interactional sociolinguistics and conversation analysis orientation (D. Vincent, S. Günthner, D. Tannen), all of which can be seen as inspired in some way by the views of Bakhtin/Vološinov. Following their footsteps, we argue that reported speech can be seen as a discourse strategy that explicitly stages polyphony and the layering of voices within discourse and therefore must be investigated with respect to its rhetorical effects. Adopting the perspective of the functional theories of syntax, we see oral discourse as a process whose product can be divided in moves (M) and discourse acts, expressed by propositions as predication units within the move. The study of reported speech must therefore be analyzed on two different levels: at the discourse level we seek to evaluate the rhetorical and pragmatic effects achieved by the use of (mostly direct) reported speech in the two corpora. Then we describe the role played by reported speech in the predication at the inter- and intrapropositional level within the move. As the discourse analysis shows, reported speech in informal oral communication can be a highly figurative device. This aspect of the use of reported speech accounts in part for specific syntactic constructions that have not always been taken into account in the grammars of standard German.

Komparativní jazyková analýza fotbalového komentáře od 70. let 20. století po současnost / Lingustic analysis of football TV commentary from 1970s to present days

Chramosta, Tomáš January 2021 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with football television commentary since 1970s to present days. In theoretical part it examines its development and two crucial domestic representatives of this genre - Vít Holubec and Jaromír Bosák. The greatest emphasis is placed on verbal chracteristics of their commentary and usage of language means. That is the reason why this diploma thesis also contains Czech language theory that sums up the specifics of football commentary and explains them on actual examples. The practical part contains detailed analysis of four selected football matches. The aim of this work is to compare TV football commentary from 1970s, 1980s and 1990s with its current conception through comparative language analysis.
