Assembling form and space : ceramics as an assemblage

Wagh, Vaishali D. January 2006 (has links)
This project examines the relationship between form and the resultant space that it encloses, through a process of assembly. The process consists of assembling materials in Phase 1, and assembling parts cut-out from a homogenous ceramic form in Phase 2. Embedded in the act of assembly is the designer's ability to construct the object in multiple formal configurations. Manipulating the form (solid) results in mutation of the space (void) held within and in-between the solid, and vice-versa. Four formal concepts guide the process of assembly in this study: interplay of solid and void, manipulation of the material skin, dynamic visual motion, and light as a building materialThe research in this paper consists of literature survey, precedent studies on two ceramic artists, and analysis of art exhibits. The significance of this project lies in its ability to blur the boundaries between academic disciplines of metalsmithing and ceramics, art and architecture. Design resulting from the overlap between disciplines has vast potential and can lead to dynamic possibilities. / Department of Art

Environmental and health impacts when replacing kerosene lamps with solar lanterns : A study on global warming potential and household air pollution

Stenemo, Erik, Olsson, Emma January 2018 (has links)
In regions with low energy access kerosene lamps are commonly used, and these emit carbon dioxide (CO2) as well as household air pollutants (HAP). This bachelor thesis examines the possible reduction of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2eq) emissions and HAP from kerosene lamps by replacing them with off-grid solar powered lanterns. Life cycle assessment, or LCA, is used as a method to assess CO2eq emissions from the solar lanterns. Data on emissions from the different stages in the solar lantern lifecycle, as well as for the kerosene lamps, is gathered through literature studies. Furthermore, possible improvements of health and social aspects as result of replacing kerosene lamps are studied and discussed. The results show that CO2eq emissions could be significantly lower if solar lanterns were used. During a lifetime of 30 years, a simple kerosene lamp emits a total of 15 500 kg CO2eq, a hurricane lantern 7 900 kg CO2eq, whereas a solar lantern emits 66.1 kg CO2eq. However, it is found that the possible harmful effects of HAP are much larger than those of CO2. Finally, possibilities and challenges regarding implementation and usage of off-grid solar powered lanterns are identified and discussed.

Multi-Kilowatt Fiber Laser Amplifiers and Hollow-Core Delivery Fibers

Cooper, Matthew 01 January 2023 (has links) (PDF)
High-power fiber lasers have emerged as a cornerstone in the realm of laser technology. Characterized by their exceptional efficiency, ruggedness, and versatility, fiber lasers are experiencing widespread use in manufacturing, medical, defense, science, and in long range sensing. Unfortunately, high-power applications require strict spatial and spectral performance characteristics to be maintained, which has yet to be perfected. This dissertation discusses the power scaling of ytterbium-doped fiber laser amplifiers, presenting three significant advancements. First, a novel photonic lantern-based method is introduced for real-time monitoring of laser beam modal content and beam quality. Initial tests highlight the photonic lantern's efficiency in predicting the onset of modal instability while simultaneously measuring the laser's output beam quality, M2. Second, this work achieved 2.2 kW single-mode narrow-linewidth laser delivery through a 5-tube nested antiresonant hollow core fiber, maintaining over 95% transmission efficiency and near diffraction-limited beam quality. Lastly, this research explores active-gain fiber designs to mitigate nonlinear effects for further power scaling. One design employing confined-doping strategies, achieving a 2.4x increase in the maximum output power before the onset of stimulated Brillouin scattering. Additionally, a second experiment employing a bend-insensitive fiber design demonstrated a transverse modal instability threshold nearly 3x that of its step-index counterpart. Collectively, this work presents a novel approach to power scale, deliver, and monitor multi-kW Yb-doped fiber laser amplifiers enabling the next-generation of applications requiring the strictest spatial and spectral performance.

Ljuslyktan Ballongen : / The Balloon : a Candle Lantern

Olofgörs, Erik January 2012 (has links)
During my final examination project, I have been working with a design process to develop a new set of candle lanterns for the company Sagaform AB. This company has a large and significant role on the Swedish interior design and retail market. The assignment was developed when the company stated that they would like to supplement and expand its existing range of products.  The research and surveys I have done have helped me to create eight different concepts and one of them ready to compete with the existing candle lanterns on the market.  The result of my concept proposal expected to be included in Sagaform’s 2013 spring catalogue. During the project I have developed 3D-rendered images, a physical model, and a solid foundation for making prototypes.  The Balloon has an attractive design language that fits both every day and more festive events. Designed to encourage the user to a happier, more well-being and relaxing lifestyle. The balloon is available in two sizes and in different bright colors that are adapted to tea and block candles, to be safely used indoors and outdoors. / 2012;50

Synthesis and evaluation of cyclic cationic peptides as antimicrobial agents for use in plant protection

Monroc, Sylvie 18 January 2008 (has links)
This PhD thesis was centred on the study of the application of de novo designed head-to-tail cationic cyclic peptides as inhibitors of the plant pathogenic microorganisms responsible for diseases in plants of great economic importance. The solid-phase synthesis of the cyclopeptides was carried out using a three-dimensional orthogonal Fmoc/tBut/Allyl strategy. The optimisation study of the allyl group removal and of the head-to-tail cyclization of linear peptides on SynPhase Lanterns was required for the syntheses. From the synthesized cyclic peptides of 4 to 10 residues, the cyclodecapeptide c(Lys-Leu-Lys-Leu-Lys-Phe-Lys-Lys-Leu-Gln) was the most active and has been used as parent peptide in a using a combinatorial chemistry approach. From the results, a second library based on the structure c(X1-X2-X3-X4-Lys-Phe-Lys-Lys-Leu-Gln) has been synthesized. The best cyclodecapeptides are the first examples of cyclic peptides effective against E. amylovora and make them potential candidates for the development of antimicrobial agents for use in plant protection.
