The Diffusion and Dispersion of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints: An Overview

Peffers, Diane D. 01 January 1980 (has links) (PDF)
The diffusion patterns of cultural characteristics and ideas is an area of geographic research which has gained considerable attention in recent years. This thesis is a study of the diffusion of the Reorganized Church as its members and missionaries have spread worldwide from their origins in the American Mid-West. The slow expansion of the RLDS faith has been studied in terms of its past and present geographic locations, its pattern of movement from one place to another and its difficulties in achieving a large, international membership.

A Study of the Contributions of Andrew Jenson to the Writing and Preservation of LDS Church History

Perkins, Keith W. 01 January 1971 (has links) (PDF)
Andrew Jenson, Assistant Church Historian, was one of the most prolific writers of LDS Church History. Born in Damgren, Denmark, he immigrated to Utah when he was fifteen years old. Because of his lack of training, his early life was spent in various manual labor occupations. None of these was satisfying to him; he longed for something better. He began compiling and writing Church history. In this he found much joy and happiness. His labors were soon recognized by the General Authorities of the LDS church, and he was permanently engaged as a historian in the Church historian's office. He was immediately sent on missions to all of the stakes, missions, and settlements of the Latter-day Saints throughout the world. From these world wide travels he was able to obtain and preserve valuable historical records for the Church. From this material he began to compile a history of all the wards, stakes, branches and missions of the church as well as a "Journal History" of the entire Church. At the time of his death, these manuscript histories totaled 850 large volumes.

J. Bracken Lee and Utah Public Education

Reynolds, Elwin Lee 01 January 1973 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the two gubernatorial terms of J. Bracken Lee, Governor of Utah 1948-1956, and the effect he had on education during these years. Lee has been accused by his detractors of being opposed to education. He has been defended by his supporters as being a friend whose only desire was to have education operated on a sound fiscal basis. During his two terms as governor he was almost constantly involved in some dispute with the education people in the state and was frequently on the defensive against anti-education charges.

The Ogden Tabernacle Choir: Its History and Contributions to the Cultural History of Utah

Sorensen, Merlin Ray 01 January 1961 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this thesis is to present a history of the Ogden Tabernacle Choir, to ascertain the extent to which it developed musically, and to include any contributions that were made by the various conductors in attaining that degree of artistry achieved by this musical organization. Inasmuch as the choir was disbanded in 1949, this study will encompass its complete history. It will also include a biography of its conductors. Because the choir rehearsed and performed primarily in the Pioneer Tabernacle, a short history of this building and the Ogden Tabernacle Organ will be included, as well.

Mormonism and War: An Interpretative Analysis of Selected Mormon Thought Regarding Seven American Wars

Stott, R. Jeffrey 01 January 1974 (has links) (PDF)
America has been involved in seven major wars, but Mormonism's involvement in these wars has evaded scholarly attention. This has been unfortunate because, for the most part, individual Mormon leaders have taken very definite stands in relation to these struggles, and accompanying these stands have been very definite goals for the outcome of these wars. This, in turn, has prompted many of these LDS leaders to view the wars from a religious perspective. This transcending religiosity combined the classical Christian wartime positions of the "just" and "righteous" war into one category. The third position however, pacifism, was also utilized during given wars. And it is this dual stance, passive aloofness and righteous support, which has made the militant Mormon mind ambivalent. Also contributing to this ambivalence has been the ambiguity of LDS scripture relating to war, and the ambiguity surrounding the LDS conception of Zion and millennialism.

The Religious Education Program of the Pacific Board of Education

Tyler, V. Lynn 01 January 1964 (has links) (PDF)
The major purposes of this study have been (1) to define and coordinate principles and policies for religious education in Pacific elementary and secondary schools that are operated by the Pacific Board of Education of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and (2) to provide a manual of instructions for administrators and teachers which will help them attain the objectives outlined in this study. Religious education in the Pacific Schools is an integral part of the entire curriculum, receiving emphasis in religion classes. The Church Seminary system, in contrast, is supplemental to public secular education.

A Study of the For the Strength of Youth Pamphlet

Jepson, Jared A. 01 March 2005 (has links)
This study is an examination of changes in the various editions of the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet, an outline of standards and expectations for the youth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Over the course of the past forty years, eight editions of the pamphlet have been printed. The first edition was published in 1965 and the most recent publication was in 2001. The study revealed that significant changes have been made in the various editions. The initial six pamphlets, which were published from 1965-1972, focused on social behavior of the youth such as dress standards, grubby clothes, curlers, hairstyles, good grooming, and standards of propriety. Rather than listing correct behaviors, both the 1990 and 2001 versions of the pamphlet focused more on correct moral principles and doctrines, such as honesty, gratitude, accountability, and repentance to name a few. The 2001 edition emphasized teachings of the current prophet (President Gordon B. Hinckley), youth programs (Personal Progress and Duty to God), and other Church publications (Principles of the Gospel and True to the Faith). This latest edition of the For the Strength of Youth has received much more notoriety by the General Authorities of the Church in both written and spoken sources compared to earlier editions. Despite all the changes to the text, the content, or emphasis given the pamphlet, all the editions reflected the needs of the time and were written for the strength of youth.
