Participace hráček na týmovém herním výkonu v utkáních ŽBL / Participation of the players on the team game performance in ZBL matchesNovotný, Petr January 2014 (has links)
Title: Participation of the players on the team game performance in ZBL matches Objectives: My work deals with the proportion of female players on the team's performance in the game of basketball teams in the women's top basketball competition - ZBL. My main aim is to explore these trends from the season 1998/1999 to 2012/2013. The file of observed extraleague players was divided into three categories (Czech players under 20 years, foreigners, Czech players over 20 years). At the same time I determined the monitored characteristics (number of players, numbers of minutes played, numbers of points scored, coefficients of validity) that are signifiant for the research. This work follows my Bachelor thesis ( 2012). Methods: The study is based on the secondary analysis of statistical data of different teams that participated in the seasons from 1998/1999 to 2012/2013 in the Women's Basketball League (ZBL). For further processing I used basic statistical and comparative methods, whereby the situation in the Czech women's basketball is being mapped out. The data from the Women's Basketball League can be found on the website of Czech Basketball Federation, where they are available. Results: The given results have confirmed all three set hypotheses - an increase in players from abroad and their significant...

The 'convergence of the twain' : a notational analysis of Northern Hemisphere rugby league and rugby union football 1988-2002Eaves, Simon John January 2006 (has links)
The principal aim of this study was to create longitudinal profiles (1988-2002) for the games of rugby union and rugby league football in order to identify whether changes in time, offence, defence and game action variables, and positional and game performance indicators were a reflection that the two codes of rugby were 'converging'. Anecdotal evidence had suggested that due to certain administrative developments within this time frame many facets of the two games were becoming similar, thereby spawning the notion of a future single, unified game of 'rugby'. This thesis presents the first empirical and objective assessment of whether such convergence has occurred. The data for this study were extracted from 48 video-taped recordings of First Grade rugby league and International rugby union in the Northern hemisphere over the specified time frame. The matches were identifiable by Era (pre-/post-professional) and Period (1988-92, 1993-95, 1997-99 and2000-02). Key aspects of play or performance were distinguished via game models and expert opinion and were scrutinised via a series of specifically designed and validated hand notation systems. Initial analysis considered (and established) the reliability of these systems, thereafter parametric and non-parametric inferential statistical teohniques were employed to identify Era and Period effects within each Code, with the additional analyses to consider the effects of Game Result and Game Quarter Outcomes. The findings from these analyses, particulaily the observed increase in ball in play time, changes at the ruck, maul, and lineout, and alterations in defence patterns of play, have provided a strong argument that the two Codes underwent a discernable degree of convergence over the years being considered. It was concluded that the introduction of professional playing status (rugby union), the summer playing season (rugby league), and law changes were likely causes of the two games being now similar in many respects. Although additional analyses should be encouraged to corroborate the present findings, the case for the development of a single Code of rugby can now be made.

The NFL true fan problemWhittle, Scott January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering / Todd Easton / Throughout an NFL season, 512 games are played in 17 weeks. For a given fan that follows one team, only 16 of those games usually matter, and the rest of the games carry little significance. The goal of this research is to provide substantial reasons for fans to watch other games.
This research finds the easiest path to a division championship for each team. This easiest path requires winning the least number of games. Due to NFL’s complicated tiebreaker rules, games not involving the fan’s team can have major implications for that team. The research calls these games critical because if the wrong team wins, then the fan’s team must win additional games to become the division champion.
To identify both the easiest path and the critical games, integer programming is used. Given the amount of two-team, three-team, and four-team division tie scenarios that can occur, 31 separate integer programs are solved for each team to identify the easiest path to the division championship. A new algorithm, Shortest Path of Remaining Teams (SPORT) is used to iteratively search through every game of the upcoming week to determine critical games.
These integer programs and the SPORT algorithm were used with the data from the previous 2 NFL seasons. Throughout these 2 seasons, it was found that the earliest a team was eliminated from the possibility of winning a division championship was week 12, and occurred in 2012 and 2013. Also, throughout these 2 seasons, there was an average of 65 critical games per season, with more critical games occurring in the 2013-2014 season. Additionally, the 2012 season was used to compare flexed scheduled games with the critical games for those weeks and it was found that the NFL missed three weeks of potentially scheduling a critical game.

Full Financial Aid in the Ivy League: How High-Achieving, Low-Income Undergraduates Negotiate the Elite College EnvironmentMcLoughlin II, Paul J. January 2011 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Karen Arnold / Currently, there are nearly a million high-achieving, low-income students in the United States. In the nation's most selective institutions of higher education, students from low-income families have been persistently under-represented. Elite colleges, in particular, have only recently begun admitting low-income students in large numbers, a result of full need-based financial aid programs that began in the early 2000s as a way to attract a more socioeconomically diverse student body. This hermeneutic phenomenological study describes the lived experiences of these undergraduates and how they navigated a college environment historically reserved for wealthy students. Although participants initially expected to feel marginalized due to unfounded concerns of elitism, they formed friendships both within and across socioeconomic class divisions and described feeling integrated within the elite college. Participants developed self-protective narratives to compensate for their low-income backgrounds and employed strategies to make up for poor high-school preparation. Participants were grateful for the opportunity to attend an elite college and were proud and relatively forthcoming about their financial aid status because they considered it a reward for their intellectual ability. Three main conclusions derive from the findings of this research: Low-income students' tendency to make a distinction between socioeconomic and financial aid status; the notion of a new cultural capital hierarchy for high-achieving, low-income students within an elite college setting; and, a specific application of Bronfenbrenner's ecological developmental model for this niche population. The results of this study indicate that high-achieving, low-income students are flourishing in full need-based financial aid programs as a result of their own resilience and intellectual capital. Participants' experiences indicate that this population of undergraduates faces unique challenges and requires specific support services to equalize their opportunities vis-à-vis higher-income peers. From these findings, implications for colleges and universities and full need-based financial aid programs are discussed. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2011. / Submitted to: Boston College. Previous issue date: 2017-04-27 / Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Piauí - FAPEPI / Secretaria Municipal de Educação - SEMEC / Universidade Estadual do Piauí - UESPI / In the late 1950s and early 1960s, agrarian reform in Brazil fell on the national agenda as an urgent and pressing need. Among the different political and social actors who defended it and those who rejected it, there was a point of convergence: the misery and abandonment of the rural man, as well as the immediate need to solve it, in the danger of the nation being destabilized By a great social revolution. The peasant leagues received from the press, from other political subjects active in the period, and also from memory, the symbolic meaning of this attestation of social upheaval in which Brazil and, particularly, the northeast experienced. Anchored in the importance of this moment for the History of Brazil and Piauí in particular, the core objective of this research is to analyze the process of formation of the Peasant Leagues in the State, based on the successful, singular and distinct experience of the League of Matinhos in the land of the Carnaubais. In this perspective, the analysis is based on the constitution of this social movement based on the systematic struggle of rural workers who have been able to forge forms of organization and resistance capable of opposing the unilateral dictates of landlords and the state as historical agents in the struggle for political, By rights and against any experience of social demotion. I argue that these absolutely unique historical experiences of these subjects were fundamental for the creation of the leagues in Piauí from, mainly from the Government of Chagas Rodrigues in the late 1950. and early 1960. In this approach structured from a renewed theoretical framework, whose concepts and categories provided elements that prioritize historical dynamics, not static portraits of reality that, because they are formulated as watertight models, never existed, I try to emphasize the question of land, Debate on agrarian reform in Piauí, tensions between local power groups, including highlighting the Catholic Church's action and the daily struggle for access to land, most often without any mediation of the state legal apparatus. The analysis is based on oral sources, hemerográficas, judicial processes and in the available academic bibliography on the subject and object. Regarding the theoretical references, I emphasize the importance of the concept of experience elaborated by EP Thompson, applied as an instrument to discuss the ways in which the subjects of this research understood the reality in their surroundings, and became main actors of this plot aligned in a time saturated with Agoras, to build expectations of social and political transformation framed by the hope of accessing and conquering the land / No final dos anos 50 e início dos anos 60, a reforma agrária no Brasil entrou a contrapelo na agenda nacional como uma necessidade urgente e imperiosa.

Peace and Security beyond Military Power: The League of Nations and the Polish-Lithuanian Dispute (1920-1923)Tessaris, Chiara January 2014 (has links)
Based on the case study of the mediation of the Polish-Lithuanian dispute from 1920 to 1923, this dissertation explores the League of Nations' emergence as an agency of modern territorial and ethnic conflict resolution. It argues that in many respects, this organization departed from prewar traditional diplomacy to establish a new, broader concept of security. At first the league tried simply to contain the Polish-Lithuanian conflict by appointing a Military Commission to assist these nations in fixing a final border. But the occupation of Vilna by Polish troops in October 1920 exacerbated Polish-Lithuanian relations, turning the initial border dispute into an ideological conflict over the ethnically mixed region of Vilna, claimed by the Poles on ethnic grounds while the Lithuanians considered it the historical capital of the modern Lithuanian state. The occupation spurred the league to greater involvement via administration of a plebiscite to decide the fate of the disputed territories. When this strategy failed, Geneva resorted to negotiating the so-called Hymans Plan, which aimed to create a Lithuanian federal state and establish political and economic cooperation between Poland and Lithuania. This analysis of the league's mediation of this dispute walks the reader through the league's organization of the first international peacekeeping operation, its handling of the challenges of open diplomacy, and its efforts to fulfill its ambitious mandate not just to prevent war but also to uproot its socioeconomic and ethnic causes. The Hymans Plan reflected this ambition as well as commitment to reconciling the tenets of balance of power and territorial status quo with the principle of self-determination and minorities' protection when drawing new boundaries and creating new states.
