Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / Using approximately 350 million à + à - pair events recorded with the BaBar detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center between 1999 and 2006, a search has been made for neutrinoless, lepton-flavor violating tau decays to three lighter leptons. All six decay modes consistent with conservation of electric charge and energy have been considered. With signal selection efficiencies of 5-12%, we obtain 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fraction B (à [arrow right] [cursive l][cursive l][cursive l]) in the range (4 - 8) à 10 -8 . / Adviser: Eric Torrence

Search for excited charged leptons in electron-positron collisions

Vachon, Brigitte Marie Christine 13 November 2018 (has links)
A search for evidence that fundamental particles are made of smaller subconstituents is performed. The existence of excited states of fundamental particles would be an unambiguous indication of their composite nature. Experimental signatures compatible with the production of excited states of charged leptons in electron-positron collisions are studied. The data analysed were collected by the OPAL detector at the LEP collider. No evidence for the existence of excited states of charged leptons was found. Upper limits on the product of the cross-section and the electromagnetic branching fraction are inferred. Using results from the search for singly produced excited leptons, upper limits on the ratio of the excited lepton coupling constant to the compositeness scale are calculated. From pair production searches, 95% confidence level lower limits on the masses of excited electrons, muons and taus are determined to be 103.2 GeV. / Graduate

A search for Higgs bosons in final states with multiple tau leptons at the DZero experiment

Suter, Louise January 2013 (has links)
Two searches for the production of Higgs bosons decaying into tau and mu leptons, using data collected with the DZero detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p-bar(p)collider, are presented. A search for the pair production of doubly charged Higgs bosons in the processq-bar(q) to H^{++}H^{--}, where H^{++} decays to tau-tau, mu-mu or tau-mu lepton pairs, with an integrated luminosity of up to L= 7.0 fb^{-1}, is presented. No significant excess of data over the expected SM background is observed and the results are used to set 95\% C.L. limits on the pair production cross section of doubly charged Higgs bosons in the range 90 < M_{H^{++}} < 200 GeV. A second search for the production of the Standard Model Higgs boson in the final state tau-tau-mu+X is presented, using an integrated luminosity of L=8.6 fb^{-1}. Again no significant excess of data is observed over the background expectation and 95% C.L. limits are set on the observed cross section relative to the Standard Model prediction, in the range 100 < M_{H} < 200 GeV.

Commissioning of the Atlas pixel detector at Run 2 of the LHC, and search for supersymmetric particles with two same-sign leptons or three leptons in the final state / Mise en oeuvre du détecteur à pixels d'Atlas lors du Run 2 du LHC et recherche de particules supersymétriques dans les états finals à deux leptons de même signe et à trois leptons

Alstaty, Mahmoud Ibrahim 07 November 2017 (has links)
In the first part of this thesis, the LHC, ATLAS, the Pixel Detector and the IBL are all reviewed. Afterwards, the analysis of first cosmic data collected by the ATLAS Detector after the IBL insertion is presented, as part of the Pixel and IBL commissioning before Run 2 started. The analysis included the study of the Pixel clusters properties, and making comparisons between the two different technologies used in the IBL sensors: the Planar type, and the 3D type which has been used for the first time in a collider experiment. Analyzing the Pixel clusters properties is important to study the detector response after the IBL insertion, in order to insure utilizing the ultimate capabilities of the detector, and to achieve better resolutions for the measurements. The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics describes physical phenomena in the fundamental level with great success. However, it suffers from several shortcomings; for instance, it has no candidate for the dark matter, and it has no solution for the gauge hierarchy problem, motivating the search for new physics beyond the SM theories. On of those theories is Supersymmetry(SUSY), which occupies a primer place in the LHC physics program. At the end of Run-1, no significant excess in data over the SM prediction is observed and limits on the supersymmetric particle masses are set. With this analysis, which is basically an extension of the Run 1 analysis, those exclusion limits are extended and the gluino masses are excluded up to 1.87 TeV, while the sbottom mass should be above 700 GeV when using simplified assumptions. These results provide new constraints on natural SUSY models.

Study of the fiducial cross section of the Higgs boson decaying into four leptons and study of muon isolation in the ATLAS experiment at the LHC / Étude de la section efficace de production du boson de Higgs en quatre leptons et étude de l’isolation des muons avec l’expérience ATLAS au LHC

Lesage, Arthur, Alexis, Jules 22 September 2017 (has links)
The main subject of the thesis is the measurement of the production cross section of the Higgs boson decaying to two Z bosons in the four-lepton final state (H →ZZ * → 4l, l = e, μ), using 36.1 fb- 1 of data recorded during 2015 and 2016 with the ATLAS experiment installed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The inclusive fiducial cross section in the H → ZZ * → 4l decay channel is measured to be 3.62 ± 0.53 (stat) ± 0.25 (syst) fb,in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 2.91 ± 0.13 fb. Several differential fiducial cross sections are measured for observables sensitive to the Higgs-boson production and decay, including kinematic distributions of the jets produced together with the Higgs boson. Good agreement is found between the data and the predictions of the Standard Model. The extracted cross-section distributions are also used to constrain anomalous Higgs-boson interactions with Standard-Model particles. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to the muon isolation. Isolation variables, based on information from the tracker (track-based isolation) and the calorimeters (calorimeter-based isolation) measure the ambient activity surrounding a particle in the detectors and are a powerful tool to reject background objects. Using36.1 fb-1 of data recorded by ATLAS in 2015 and2016, the variable distributions are compared with simulation. Working points are then defined as sets of cuts applied to the isolation variables. Using theZ boson decays to a pair of muons, the signal efficiency of the working points is calculated. Scale factors are then derived as ratio of efficiencies measured in data over simulation. The good agreement leads to scale factors close to one.
