The Genre Formerly Known As Punk: A Queer Person of Color's Perspective on the SceneZackery, Shane M 17 May 2014 (has links)
This video is a visual representation of the frustrations that I suffered from when I, a queer, gender non-conforming, person of color, went to “pasty normals” (a term defined by Jose Esteban Munoz to describe normative, non-exotic individuals) to get a definition of what Punk meant and where I fit into it. In this video, I personify the Punk music movement. Through my actions, I depart from the grainy, low-quality, amateur aesthetics of the Punk film and music genres and create a new world where the Queer Person of Color defines Punk. In the piece, Punk definitively says, “Don’t try to define me. Shut up and leave me to rest.”

Educating about LGBQ Diversity in Introductory College CoursesJanuary 2016 (has links)
abstract: Information concerning sexual minorities is conspicuously absent from secondary education curriculums. Student attitudes toward sexual diversity are impacted, and those entering higher educational environments are at a disadvantage when faced with diverse university populations. This study attempted to close the information gap among first year college students and to improve attitudes by teaching about sexual minorities, especially gays and lesbians. In addition to their standard coursework, 41 student participants (31 in the intervention group, and 10 in the control group) who were enrolled in required introductory college courses received six short lessons on sexual diversity. Mixed methods data collection and analysis included a pre and post intervention survey, the Riddle Homophobia Scale (1985), and qualitative electronic discussion boards throughout the intervention. Surveys revealed a significant decrease in negative attitudes but no increase in more affirming attitudes. Qualitative data showed somewhat inconsistent results with quantitative surveys, but allowed deeper analysis of the familial, social, religious and societal influences on student attitudes toward lesbian, gay, bisexual and questioning (LGBQ) people. Discussion includes possible explanations for the findings, suggestions for future research, and suggests refinements of the Riddle Homophobia Scale. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Leadership and Innovation 2016

Previous issue date: 2016-03-02 / Introduction: The present study had as general objective to analyze the vulnerability and
preventive practices against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) affective-sexual relations.
Methods: this was an exploratory study and descriptive, transversal and qualitative character.
The sample was composed of 18 participants defined lesbian women, with ages ranging from
19 to 42 years (M = 26; DP = 6.1). For the collection of data was used a demographic
questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The collection came from a participant matrix
and followed the selection of new participants by the method of "snowball". The data from the
demographic questionnaire were analyzed through descriptive statistics in PASW Statistics
Software (SPSS) for Mac-23 version, the data obtained in the interviews were analyzed by
analyzing thematic category MAXQDA software 11-Data Analysis Qualitative Software
(qualitative data analysis Software). Results: Were applicants in the accounts the idea of greater
vulnerability associated with the male presence in the relationship, getting behind in speeches
that the only relationship between women could be a protective factor. Reports emerged about
the absence of further clarification about the existence, use and effectiveness of preventive
inputs to STD's that can be used in relations between women. Were highlighted in the speeches
that the alleged methods available would not own, or designed to prevent the STDs among
women, considering that most of these means of prevention would be adaptations of existing
methods, as the male condom or unlubricated adaptations of items which originally would be
used for other purposes (plastic film, PVC gloves, latex barrier use in dentistry). Confidence in
the partnership and in the existence of a presumed fidelity were cited as elements of prevention
strategies. The bias was related to lack of campaigns that drive the lesbians on the need to
prevent sexual relations, and stigma to the myth that lesbians would be marginalized women.
The presence of the element constraint was highlighted as a factor preventing the search for
Gynecological medical care. The lack of preparation of health professionals emerged as an
element that can influence on increasing the vulnerability of this population health. More than
half of the participants stated that often reveal their sexual orientation to doctors gynecologists,
which may indicate a breakthrough for Lesbian visibility. It is concluded that the factors of
programmatic can influence more evident to the worsening in the situations of vulnerability to
health of lesbians, although elements of individual and social dimension also are associated and these misdeeds. These findings may serve as a framework that highlights elements of
individual, social order, as well as deficiencies in programmatic, that relate and can influence
for the most vulnerable situation in health of lesbians.
A confiança

Problematické životní situace osob s homosexuální orientací / Problematic life situations of person with homosexual orientationVESELÁKOVÁ, Jesika January 2011 (has links)
Homosexuality may be encountered in all cultural and historical formations. Different cultures have different views of sexuality, its expression and forms in general. The difference of the homosexual orientation and the way this phenomenon is reflected in the society influences the life of persons with homosexual orientation. Individuals are often confronted with an inner conflict with the heterosexual majority, which may result in his existential stress. Mastering problematic situations in life depends on the personality of an individual with homosexual orientation, the expectations of his/her social environment ambience and the support that his/her surroundings that the individual perceives in this environment. At present, there is increasing interest in homosexuality as a social phenomenon. In the theoretical part, I summed up the Euro-American views of homosexuality and outlined the religious roots of the present-day view of homosexuality. Subsequently, I dealt with living conditions connected with the homosexual orientation. The view of problematic life situations and crises of persons with homosexual orientation was, resulting from the substance of the subject, the most important basis for the practical part of my diploma thesis. The basic objective that I endeavoured to fulfil was to describe the life situations and problems that are connected with homosexuality, seen from the subjective point of view of persons with homosexual orientation. I limited the research area to the actual viewing of one?s own minority sexuality by a homosexual man/lesbian woman, and viewing their social background reacting to their different orientation. The study was intended as qualitative research from the very beginning. To conduct the specific research I chose the attitude by means of the phenomenologic research. The experience that an individual had gone through was recorded by means of an interview and subsequently analysed. This interview created a basis for the description and interpretation of the experience conveyed. Drawing on the facts obtained it is possible to recommend various forms of education activity, the purpose of which is a higher information level in both the homosexually and heterosexually oriented public. Further, I recommend drawing up quality methodology focusing on decreasing the homophobic attitudes in the majority society in the Czech Republic. It is necessary to observe a professional attitude lessons on the topic of homosexuality within sexual education at primary schools, which will be based on a unified methodology. To create a legislative basis concerning adoption and assisted reproduction in the Czech Republic, it will be necessary to adopt measures have to be adopted that will eventually result in an absolute elimination of discrimination of the minority with homosexual orientation.

SARA GARCÍA: ICONO CINEMATOGRÁFICO NACIONAL, ABUELA Y LESBIANAJanuary 2014 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT Mexican Golden Age Cinema materialized the narratives of identity, unity and morality that became the obligated point of reference to understand social stability and mexicaness during the post-revolutionary period. Hence, film stars evolved into cultural icons that embodied the representation of patriarchal order as a synonym for nationalism. However, dissident depictions that challenged carefully tailored heteronormative roles were as much a part of the post-revolutionary reality as was the attempt to manufacture a utopic heterosexual family on screen, that functioned as a metaphor for national reunification under the law of the father/president of the Mexican Republic. Nonetheless, even when an distinguished member of the Mexican star system, Sara García´s queer performativity of her quintessential sainted mother and even more revered grandmother characters highlights fissures in the effort to naturalize sexual passivity and heterosexual motherhood as the core of Mexican women identity. Furthermore, García took advantage of her romanticized butch characters in order to revert lesbian invisibility in movies where she portrait roles that exemplified sapphic households. In most of García's films masculine presence became redundant, hence challenging male privilege. Not very far from her own reality, García's queer women of a certain age, involved in female marriages, contested the post-revolutionary discourse of stability and mexicaness even in the heteronormative realm of Golden Age Filmmaking. Regardless of her queerness, unlike any other transgressive figure, Sara García became a national icon in her time and her image continues to hold relevance in current Mexican popular culture. More than five decades after her death young generations are still familiar with her legacy and her image has evolved into the representation of the nostalgia for tradition and alleged "more simple" times. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Spanish 2014

Não se nasce militante, torna-se: processo de engajamento de jovens LGBT - panorama histórico na cidade de São Paulo e cenário atual em Paris / One is not born, but rather becomes militant: engagement process of LGBT youth - historical overview in São Paulo and current scenario in ParisMarcelo Daniliauskas 11 March 2016 (has links)
This research analyzes the process of emergence of organized groups of LGBT youth and their engagement. "Not exactly as a boy" : A Study of Queer Gender Performances, Cross-dressing, and Love Between Women in Sarah Waters’ Tipping the VelvetJonsson, Lovisa January 2018 (has links)
This study consists of an analysis of the novel Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters, in terms of cross-dressing as self-representation. The study aims to emphasise how cross-dressing can be significant when expressing one’s gender identity, by examining the gender identity and sexual orientation of the male impersonator Nancy Astley/Nan King and how she reacts to her own queerness. With the use of queer literary theory, Judith Butler’s theories on gender performativity, and ideas of gender as social constructs, this study argues that the novel is a powerful representation of the fluidity and inconsistency of gender and the non-existence of the gender binary. Throughout the novel, the main character disrupts the expected gender roles of the British Victorian era, and through the use of cross-dressing, uses masculinity and masculine femininity to discover and express her gender identity.

(Dis)Enchanted: (Re)constructing Love and Creating Community in theSuddeth, Shannon A. 23 June 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines a queer fan community for the television show Once Upon a Time (OUAT) that utilizes the social networking site Tumblr as their primary base of fan activity. The Swan Queen fan community is comprised of individuals that collectively support and celebrate a non-canon romantic relationship between two of the female lead characters of the show rather than the canonic, heterocentric relationships that occur between the two women and their respective male love interests. I answer two research questions in this study: First, how are members of the Swan Queen fan community developing counter narratives of love by engaging in meaning-making processes and interpretations of OUAT? And secondly, how do they talk about the purpose and importance of their narratives for themselves or the Swan Queen fan community? In order to answer my research questions, I consider how the Swan Queen fandom developed and how they convey their meaning-making strategies online. To do this, I have analyzed the Tumblr blog of one Swan Queen fan and have used their blog as a nexus between other Swan Queen fans that use the website for their fan activities. Swan Queen fans argue that the show runners of OUAT use subtextual codes within canonical storylines in an effort to queerbait the show’s queer audience members. Moreover, the show runners refute the notion that they are queerbating queer fans at all by arguing that the fans’ perceptions are baseless and that any perceived queering of the characters Emma Swan and Regina Mills is purely “unintentional.” This response has only served to alienate the show’s queer fan base further as it led to increased complaints that the show runners were gaslighting the entire queer fandom. Additionally, Swan Queen fans maintain that the show’s introduction of canonical storylines featuring romantic relationships between Regina and Robin Hood and Emma and Captain Hook are heterosexist and dangerous. The storylines between Emma and Captain Hook, queer fans argue, often promote rape culture, thus perpetuating violence against both queer and non-queer audiences through storylines grounded in fairytale concepts of “True Love” and “Happily Ever After”. As such, Swan Queen fans push back against and reject this violence through their own interpretations and counter narratives of “True Love”. In accordance with previous research, I have found that historically marginalized groups such as the queer community continue to experience widespread and often aggressive attacks by queerphobic individuals and hate groups that are intent on preserving traditionally heterocentric institutions in our society, including (but not limited to) mainstream media broadcasting. Furthermore, fandom has become institutionalized in the same manner and typically operates within hegemonic, heterocentric standards. Conversely, queer fandoms such as the Swan Queen fandom operate outside of these standards, and fans respond to antagonistic efforts to silence them or cast them in an inaccurate manner by creating close-knit social communities to combat these actions and provide a space wherein individuals are able to counter dominant narratives that serve to further marginalize them. This study elucidates how this effort may occur and questions the effect this membership has on those who participate within a queer fandom. It is imperative that such research takes place, as there are very few accounts of how queer fans navigate the complex intersection between fandom and queerness.
