O amante bilíngue: tradução anotada e comentada / El amante bilingüe: annotated and commented translation

Carolina Dutra Carrijo 10 October 2016 (has links)
The present work proposes an annotated translation and commentary of Juan Marsé\'s 1990 El amante bilingüe. Probably due to scarce translations of his work, Marsé, a Spanish writer still active nowadays, is little known to the Brazilian reader. With respect to El amante bilingüe, specifically, Marsé offers an inquiring look into the incongruities that permeate the post-Franco democratic transition, and subsequent years, which are aggravated by economic, social, geographical and cultural division in Barcelona, the work\'s narrative space. Such contents are connected not only to the development of the plot - centered on the identity split the protagonist undergoes but also to the structure of the work, revealing themselves through the language and stylistic features employed. Predominantly written in Castilian, the work translates certain sensitivity to Catalan culture, bilingual in nature. In addition, it holds a literary dialect as a re-creation of the southern Spanish immigrants\' variant. The plurality of languages and representations constitute a source for inquiries, both in terms of narrative and in relation to the translation process, mirroring the multiplicity of the cultural context it depicts. In this way, we understand that the translated text should provide for the contextualization of a fairly complex landscape that can offer initial reading resources and indicate paths for analysis. However, beyond the contextual movement, the translation of the novel means to suggest a discussion on topics such as the cultural, social and historical identities mirrored in the crisis experienced by the protagonist and the tension caused by the multiple languages of the text. The search for an ethical translation seeks to respond to the aesthetic resources employed by the author and the possible universality of the work.

Translations of the Caribbean: at words' end? : A Study of the Translation of Literary Dialect in A State of Independence

Sannholm, Raphael January 2008 (has links)

The aim of this study was to identify the strategies used to render the literary dialect in A State of Independence into the Swedish translation. In order to systematically study the translation solutions, a number of ‘coupled pairs’ consisting of source text ‘problems’ and target text ‘solutions’ were extracted from the original text and the translation. The ‘coupled pairs’ were then analysed in order to detect regularities in the translation solutions. The study showed that the major strategy used by the translator was the use of ‘eye-dialect’, i.e. non-standard spellings that simulate non-standard speech. Moreover, some passages in the translation had been standardised, whereas eye-dialectal spellings were found in other passages where the original did not contain any non-standard features. Finally, a comparative count of dialectally marked utterances in both texts was made. The count showed that the dialectal markers were in the majority in the translation, which might indicate that the translator has tried to compensate for the lack of equivalent target language features.

Tradução do dialeto literário de Burma Jones, da obra \'A Confederacy of Dunces\', de John Toole / Translation of the dialogues of Burma Jones, a character from John Kennedy Toole\'s book A Confederacy of Dunces

Hanna, Kátia Regina Vighy 04 August 2006 (has links)
This paper aims to translate the dialogues of Burma Jones, a character from John Kennedy Toole\'s book A Confederacy of Dunces. This character\'s speech is a representation of the Black English Vernacular (BEV) style, which raises questions about the literary dialects and the problems involved in their translation. Toole\'s work is almost unknown to Brazilian readers, except for a translation by Cristina Boselli, distributed only to members of Círculo do Livro and therefore available to a limited readership. In that translation, Jone\'s speech is not presented with any trace of dialectal variation, being only marked as belonging to a colloquial register. Chapter I advocates for the relevance of preserving the translation of the different literary dialects, especially Burma Jones\'. This is done through examining how the author employed the linguistic heterogeneity to stress the characters\' peculiarities and the social position they occupy in the fictional society of the book. This relation being established, Chapter II considers the literary dialects in their formal construction and the representative, ideological and humorous effects they create in a fictional work. This analysis highlights works from Brazilian literature in which black character\'s speeches have received a different treatment, in order to verify how the authors have portrayed them. Chapter III addresses translation theory and emphasizes the translator\'s violent intervention, as s/he creates aesthetic, ideological and political meaning in any act of translation, and specially when translating literary dialects. This concept is supported by to some authors on contemporary translation theory, who challenge the concepts of \"fidelity\" and \"original work\". In conclusion, I present a dialectical translation of the most relevant dialogues of Burma Jones, followed by comments on my decisions

La traduction française de textes littéraires en anglais non standard / French translation of nonstandard english literary texts

Bruneaud, Karen 18 June 2010 (has links)
For Antoine Berman, a major characteristic of great prose is its ability to “span the whole linguistic range of a community”. Some writers, such as Twain, Faulkner, Steinbeck and Salinger, have thus drawn on all the resources of the English language in order to recreate vernacular discourse and/or nonstandard idiolects. This stylistic strategy, which expresses theauthor’s particular ideological and political attitudes, is often lost when translated into French. Translating these “deviant” forms of writing poses specific problems while being paradigmatic of the way in which the translator is embedded in the translated text : nonstandard discursive patterns therefore provide a privileged viewpoint from which to study the translator’s action as well as the strategies he uses to transfer the original’s ideological and aesthetical dimensions to the translated text. Our study begins with a sociolinguistic analysis of nonstandard English, before examining its use in literature, in order to understand the dual dialectic of “mediation and emulation” that links literary sociolects to linguistic reality. Wethen explore the practical and theoretical tradition of literary translation to understand what factors affect the translator’s work and his/her approach to nonstandard writing. Finally, we analyse a corpus of translations: using Bourdieu’s sociological theory and Berman’s “systems of deformation” analytical system, we examine the “re-enunciation” (Folkart) strategiesadopted by various translators and the potential readings that result.
