The research reported in this dissertation analyzes the novel Plata quemada, by Ricardo Piglia, in which the Argentinean writer recreates the story of a group that assaulted a bank, in 1965. This central story is permeated by crossing other reports, such as the experience with drugs, the passing through prisons and mental hospitals, the homosexual relation between two characters and the process of textual creation, represented the journalist Emilio Renzi. The presence of several stories in the novel makes possible a wide variety of interpretations to Plata quemada, which can be read, among others ways, as a new historical novel and as a historiographical metafiction. Thus, within the relations between literature and history, there is an approach of the narrative resources used by Piglia in the construction of his novel. Besides, the research also discusses the relation between this book and the other literary works of the author, as well as it stresses the relevance of Ricardo Piglia for Argentinean contemporary literature. By pointing the various possibilities of reading Plata quemada, the research shows that, by its wealth, this book can be included in the scope of what several sectors of criticism, not without controversy, call post-modernity.

Unconscious Christianity : a neglected element in Dietrich Bonhoeffer's late theology

McLaughlin, Eleanor January 2015 (has links)
In this thesis I argue that unconscious Christianity (unbewußtes Christentum), referred to by Dietrich Bonhoeffer in several of his later writings, is a significant idea in his late theology. There has as yet been no in-depth study of this theological concept as it appears in Bonhoeffer's work, and I therefore aim with this thesis to begin a new conversation in Bonhoeffer studies on this important topic. Bonhoeffer does not offer a definition of unconscious Christianity, but by analysing the ways in which he uses the term in his writing, I offer a constructed definition of unconscious Christianity as used by Bonhoeffer. The first three chapters of the thesis build towards this definition with a close analysis of each relevant text. By examining unconscious Christianity alongside other theological ideas in Bonhoeffer's prison writing, I show how an awareness and understanding of unconscious Christianity adds depth to readings of Bonhoeffer's late work. This thesis also clarifies the differences between unconscious Christianity and religionless Christianity, and shows how unconscious Christianity fits alongside the other, more widely-studied, concepts present in the later writings, such as the world come of age. This work demonstrates that there is movement within Bonhoeffer's thoughts on unconscious Christianity and points to Bonhoeffer's readiness to allow his personal circumstances to inform his theology. It also shows how unconscious Christianity represents a shift within Bonhoeffer's theology. This thesis also makes the subsidiary point that Bonhoeffer's prison fiction should be considered as theological writing. Through it Bonhoeffer addresses not only unconscious Christianity as discussed in this thesis, but many other issues that reoccur in his theological prison letters. I conclude by showing how an understanding of unconscious Christianity is beneficial not only for Bonhoeffer studies, but for contemporary theology more widely.

A critical study of Anthony Trollope's South Africa

Davidson, J H January 1970 (has links)
In the year 1877, during a lull in the Eastern Question, the English newspapers discovered South Africa. There a Dutch republic, the Transvaal, had all but succumbed to the onslaughts of a native chief - or so it seemed; and now it was annexed to the British Crown. Clearly, this was a corner of the world of which, as its colonists boasted, England would hear much more; and Parliament was shortly to set its seal of approval upon Lord Carnarvon’s essay in imperial architecture, South African Confederation. 'They will attach themselves to the house of Jacob' : a redactional study of the oracles concerning the nations in the Book of Isaiah 13-23

Lee, Jongkyung January 2015 (has links)
The present study argues that a series of programmatic additions were made to the oracles concerning the nations in Isa 13-23 during the late-exilic period by the same circle of writers who were responsible for Isa 40-55. These additions were made to create continuity between the ancient oracles against the nations from the Isaiah tradition and the future fate of the same nations as the late-exilic redactor(s) foresaw. The additions portray a two-sided vision concerning the nations. One group of passages (14:1-2; 14:32b; 16:1-4a; 18:7) depicts a positive turn for certain nations while the other group of passages (14:26-27; 19:16-17; 23:8-9, 11) continues to pronounce doom against the remaining nations. This double-sided vision is set out first in Isa 14 surrounding the famous taunt against the fallen tyrant. 14:1-2, before the taunt, paints the broad picture of the future return of the exiles and the attachment of the gentiles to the people of Israel. After the taunt and other sayings of YHWH against his enemies, 14:26-27 extends the sphere of the underlying theme of 14:4b-25a, namely YHWH's judgement against boastful and tyrannical power(s), to all nations and the whole earth. The two sides of this vision are then applied accordingly to the rest of the oracles concerning nations in chs 13-23. To the nations that have experienced similar disasters as the people of Israel, words of hope in line with 14:1-2 were given. To the nations that still possessed some prominence and reasons to be proud, words of doom in line with 14:26-27 were decreed. Only later in the post-exilic period, for whatever reason, be it changed international political climate or further spread of the Jewish diaspora, was the inclusive vision of 14:1-2 extended even to the nations that were not so favourably viewed by our late-exilic redactor (19:18-25; 23:15-18).

Por fim, apresenta-se uma antologia em formato bilíngue dos epigramas contidos na Grinalda da Arte de Amar (1862) com notas e comentários das especificidades de suas traduções / Aiming at contributing to the research of Greek-Roman classical translations into Portuguese and the acceptance of these texts in our literature, this study tries to register, as well as study and spread the work of Martial’s translations produced by José Feliciano de Castilho, a Portuguese who lived in Rio de Janeiro from 1847 until his death in 1879. The analysis of the translations of this Portuguese-Brazilian poet gives some clues about how the nineteenth century read and spread the poetry of Bilbilis author, taking into account his influence as both epigrammatist and a person who spread his dissolute and sometimes, obscene poetic matters. Intending to present the different views of the nineteenth century and to the present time on Martial’s poetry, we propose a theoretical path on this work in order to show the different approaches of these periods of time. Then the reader will find a study of how to have a reading and translation of Martial by José Castilho, once again, contrasting them with the current receive this poet. Finally, it features an anthology of epigrams in bilingual format contained in Grinalda da Arte de Amar (1862) with notes and comments on the specifics of his translations / FAPESP: 11/04944-8

This thesis aims to study the novel Lignes de faille (2006), by Nancy Huston, Anglophone writer who adopts French as her writing language from the moment she moves and settles permanently in France. The search for identity and the questioning of the stories recorded in History, foundation themes for the construction of the book, to which is proposed a post-modern reading, are intended to be studied from the author's own critical views, stated in her essay books A espécie fabuladora (2010) and Nord perdu (1999). Besides the view of History and identity as fiction, presented by her in A espécie fabuladora, just as well as the inseparable linguistic issue that pervades every identity discussion, introduced in Nord perdu, it is proposed a deepening of the reflections with the concepts of historical metafiction (HUTCHEON, 1991), to look at the concept of History used in the novel; the application of the concept of the postmodern subject (HALL, 1999) to rethink the identity issues and, in general, the problematization of the concept of in-betweenness disclosed by Bhabha (BHABHA, 1999).

Pastoralism and the function of the pastoral in late sixteenth century english literature

Beard, Margaret Mary January 1978 (has links)
In this thesis I have made a study of certain aspects of pastoralism and the pastoral genre in late Elizabethan literature. I have done this because I felt that Elizabethan pastoral writing was, at its best, far more than just a literary exercise undertaken, as was much Continental pastoral writing, to furnish the vernacular with a genre approved by Classical precedent. The strength of Elizabethan pastoral derived from the combination of certain indigenous factors present during Elizabeth's reign, with the current interest in imitating the Classics and introducing a famous genre into the vernacular. There had always been in English literature a strong response to the natural world and this response revealed itself in pastoral writing in which the traditional naturalistic details derived from Classical sources were infused with the grace and strength of direct observation. More importantly, Elizabethan England had a monarch who was not only ideally suited through her sex and celibacy to play the leading role in a pastoral world, but who also actively encouraged and enjoyed the eulogistic sentiments native to the Renaissance pastoral. In the English attempt to imitate a favourite Renaissance version of the pastoral - the use of a pastoral framework to comment on ecclesiastical or political affairs - there was, in Tudor Protestantism, with all its internal conflicts and its vital struggle against the political and spiritual forces of the Roman church, an ideal source of material for eclogues in the style of Mantuan. Such factors ensured that Elizabethan pastoral had a significance and relevance largely lacking in the more academic products of Continental pastoralists. Preface, p. i
