Johnson on Dryden and Pope

Clingham, G. J. H. January 1986 (has links)
This work argues that a misunderstanding of the structure and content of Johnson's literary biography has prevented us from seeing that the Lives of Dryden and Pope are profound and challenging criticism. Inappropriate generic and historical criteria have been imposed on the Lives of the Poets so that the relation between biography and criticism has falsely been seen as discontinuous, and, concomitantly, Johnson's central, animating critical value of Nature has been defined solely in terms of neoclassical formalism, or, at best, associated with psychological value. As a preliminary to a discussion of the Lives of Dryden and Pope I demonstrate how (i) Johnson focuses in Nature an experience of life which is distinguished from the commonplace but which is also deeper than psychology; and (ii) that Nature is rooted in a religious experience associated but not absolutely equated with Christianity and which provides Johnson with a conception of memory to mitigate his sceptical sense of the discrepancy between the intentions and achievements of a writer. With reference to the Lives of Milton, Butler, Rochester and Parnell, I discuss how the structures of the Lives work to trace the way a poet realises his own genius, and how Johnson's thought operates redemptively to establish a memory for the poet who does not. Two large, related chapters apply this knowledge of Johnson's literary biography in detailed analysis of his encounter with the lives and works of Dryden and Pope. Modern and contemporary criticism is compared to Johnson's understanding of Dryden's translations -- in which, I argue, Johnson finds Dryden's genius most fully realised -- and of Pope's Rape of the Lock and Iliad Book I, and what they reveal of Pope's mind and his relation to his art. These Lives indicate (i) that the continuity of past with present embodied so attractively in Dryden's translations is informed by his Catholicism and reveals Nature; and (ii) that Pope's sacrifice of Nature maintained the integrity of his personal character-and offered the age a refinement it sought -- but also revealed a split between art and Nature -- not characteristic of Dryden -- which made civilized writing problematic. In conclusion I briefly draw out Johnson's general historical position represented by his comparison of Dryden with Pope, as he looked back on the Lives of the Poets and on the previous century.

The Half-Lives of Sr90 and Cs137

Wiles, David 09 1900 (has links)
The half-lives of Sr90 and Cs137 were measured by the method of observing the disintegration rate rate of a known number of atoms. A 4(pi) proportional counter was designed and constructed to measure the absolute disintegration rates of the samples used. The efficiency of the counter was tested with calibrated radioactive solutions from the National Bureau of Standards. The submicrogram quantities of the carrier-free radioisotopes used for counting were determined with the mass spectrometer along with isotope dilution techniques. Independent evidence is given to support the half-lives found in this investigation. / Thesis / Master of Science (MS)

Exploring Men's Health in the Context of their Daily Lives

Martinus, Lidia 09 1900 (has links)
This thesis presents a literature review and data from individual interviews conducted with a total of 20 men in Southern Ontario and the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. The objective of this qualitative study was to identify what these men consider to be their main health problems, and what they consider to be the main health problems of Canadian men in general. In addition, this study explored the ways in which the men understand health and the particular health problems they experienced. Several general trends emerged in the data. Respondents described health in both physical and mental terms. They associated physical health predominantly with lifestyle in the form of adequate activity/exercise, diet, and balance of activities. Mental health was associated with state of mind. Insofar as respondents worried about their health, they were concerned about developing physical health problems such as prostate and testicular cancer. However, the day-to-day problems that they actually experienced were low level mental health problems such as stress and tiredness. Data analysis revealed a broader underlying theme of control. In particular, respondents' explanations of health reflected their ability to control the onset of many health problems by living a healthy lifestyle. Yet, social structural influences, specifically work and gender roles, did not always afford these men control over health-related problems such as stress. Respondents explained the health of Canadian men in terms of lifestyle (reflecting control over health), and by unknown etiology (reflecting lack of control over diseases such as cancer). Review of the research findings identifies gaps in research and offers suggestions for further studies. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

A Decay Scheme for 164 Ho

Guertin, James 12 1900 (has links)
The present investigation was prompted by several considerations. In previous studies there was considerable variance with regard to the reported values for the half-lives of the isomeric and ground states in 164 Ho. There was also considerable variance with regard to the values reported for the branching ratios and the relative intensities of the transitions. Thus a further study of the problem was needed.

Morality in Plutarch's "Life of Cimon"

Giroux, Chandra January 2016 (has links)
Understanding Plutarch’s Parallel Lives as a literary text is the focus of current scholarship. However, to this date, no one has looked at Plutarch’s Life of Cimon to analyze what it reveals about morality. My thesis endeavours to understand how Plutarch shapes Cimon as a literary character to bring to light the moral focus of this Life. It first investigates Plutarch’s life and the atmosphere in which he lived to understand what influenced his writing. Chapter One follows with a discussion of the composition of the Lives to understand how they are organized. The insistence on reading each book’s four parts (proem, Life 1, Life 2, synkrisis) to fully appreciate their moral relevance leads to Chapter Two, which dissects the main components of Plutarch’s moral mirror. This provides the necessary background needed for Chapter Three’s case study of Plutarch’s Cimon. Here, I argue that the main moral message contained therein is the importance of generosity and euergetism.

PERFORMATIVE ACTIVISM AND POLITICS: A REPRESENTATIONAL ANALYSIS OF THE 2020 RESURGENCE OF THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT

Unknown Date (has links)
This study seeks to analyze the performative activism and political performance that took place during the Black Lives Matter protests between May and November of the year 2020. Various points of view perceive such acts as merely reductive or otherwise worthy of disdain, however, this study seeks to analyze these acts to identify different components within each performance. The primary focus is to further understand the advantages and disadvantages of performative activism and political performance. This research concentrates on examining the significant social and political impacts of these performances and their symbolic nature. This study also evaluates how discourse related to marginalized communities enters the public sphere and influences it. This study will include the analysis of performance via social media platforms, such as Instagram and Twitter during the 2020 resurgence of Black Lives Matter, including performances carried out by political leaders along the 2020 U.S. presidential campaign trail. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2021. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection
