A Socio-spatial Approach To The Question Of Class And Consciousness Formation In A Local Setting: The Case Of Bursa Industrial Workers

Erengezgin, Cavlan Berrak 01 January 2008 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this thesis is to explore the class and consciousness formation in a local setting by also developing and applying a theoretical framework which allow us to study the interaction of locus of class consciousness with the other loci of consciousness formation such as the community and the state. Such an approach is also grounded in the belief that a relational understanding of these processes requires us to take spatial dynamics such as local dependency, spatial fix and fixity and mobility into account. By critically drawing upon historico-geographical materialist approach(es), the thesis attempts at resolving the tensions between &lsquo / locality-wider society&rsquo / and &lsquo / structure-consciousness&rsquo / . By integrating them into a holistic and operational conceptual framework, it investigates the highly complex patterning of relations within urban structured coherences, and their effects upon the class and consciousness formation processes. It is shown that interpenetration of these fields of tension through urban processes is crucial in shaping a backbone for the concrete struggles fought by working class against capital in and of the urban regions. These issues are discussed with reference to two working class neighborhoods in Bursa. The first community, Emek, is an unplanned, illegally built settlement, hosting mostly migrant, and lower-wage earning industrial workers, and the second one, Akpinar, is a planned settlement, composed of low-cost housing cooperatives, symbolizing a higher living standard environment for well-paid, socially secure workers, mostly local in origin. The field research focuses on the relations between &lsquo / the labor market, housing market and local dependency&rsquo / and &lsquo / the strategies between mobility-fixity adopted both on part of capital and labor&rsquo / . The specific character of these strategies also tell us how the patterning of the relations between class, community and state loci of consciousness formation and the formation of local coherences mutually shape one another. It is often assumed in this context that formation of class-based consciousness is hindered by other loci of consciousness such as the community-based one. This study shows that community-based consciousness is itself largely absent in the communities in hand and when community-base is deployed by the local workers it is often strategically employed to get personal benefits. In this sense, the study concludes that the lack of community-based consciousness does not device more effective strategies of formation of class-based consciousness but perhaps another adverse factor in developing class-based consciousness in an environment heavily dominated by individualized form of consciousness.

"I am walking in my city" : The Production of Locality in Githa Hariharan’s In Times of Siege, Vikram Chandra’s Love and Longing in Bombay, and Amit Chaudhuri’s Freedom Song

Stibe, Anna January 2014 (has links)
At the center of this study are three Indian novels with an urban setting and dealing with political and social issues of the 1990s: Githa Hariharan’s In Times of Siege (2003), Vikram Chandra’s Love and Longing in Bombay (1997) and Amit Chaudhuri’s Freedom Song (1998). The Delhi of In Times of Siege is portrayed as a city infused with power but haunted by a troubled past that is brought to the present by a dissenting professor of history. The Bombay of Love and Longing in Bombay is also a haunted city, but is primarily imagined as a narrative locality in which storytelling is central to both the narrative and the city. The Calcutta of Freedom Song is explored through a resident family, blurring the distinctions between the home and the city. The three novels all negotiate an increasingly sectarian environment. The three cities of the novels are explored through the framework of anthropologist Arjun Appadurai’s concept of the production of locality, which sees place as a value and a dimension of social life. By approaching the cities in the novels through locality, it is possible to discern how the authors construct place as meaningful. This study thus extends the anthropological concept of locality into literature, addressing the specific strategies through which the authors portray and create their respective cities. Key concepts explored in the novels include agency, haunting, storytelling, and memory. / Baksidestext At the center of this study are three Indian novels with an urban setting and dealing with political and social issues of the 1990s: Githa Hariharan’s In Times of Siege (2003), Vikram Chandra’s Love and Longing in Bombay (1997) and Amit Chaudhuri’s Freedom Song (1998). Avhandlingens analys bygger på antropologen Arjun Appadurais begrepp the production of locality, dvs. hur känslan av plats skapas.

Dynamics of turbulent premixed flames in acoustic fields

Hemchandra, Santosh 13 May 2009 (has links)
This thesis describes computational and theoretical studies of fundamental physical processes that influence the heat-release response of turbulent premixed flames to acoustic forcing. Attached turbulent flames, as found in many practical devices, have a non-zero mean velocity component tangential to the turbulent flame brush. Hence, flame surface wrinkles generated at a given location travel along the flame sheet while being continuously modified by local flow velocity disturbances, thereby, causing the flame sheet to respond in a non-local manner to upstream turbulence fluctuations. The correlation length and time scales of these flame sheet motions are significantly different from those of the upstream turbulence fluctuations. These correlation lengths and times increase with turbulence intensity, due to the influence of kinematic restoration. This non-local nature of flame sheet wrinkling (called 'non-locality') results in a spatially varying distribution of local consumption speed (i.e. local mass burning rate) even when the upstream flow statistics are isotropic and stationary. Non-locality and kinematic restoration result in coupling between the responses of the flame surface to coherent acoustic forcing and random turbulent fluctuations respectively, thereby, causing the coherent ensemble averaged component of the global heat-release fluctuation to be different in magnitude and phase from its nominal (laminar) value even in the limit of small coherent forcing amplitudes (i.e. linear forcing limit). An expression for this correction, derived from an asymptotic analysis to leading order in turbulence intensity, shows that its magnitude decreases with increasing forcing frequency because kinematic restoration limits flame surface wrinkling amplitudes. Predictions of ensemble averaged heat release response from a different, generalized modeling approach using local consumption and displacement speed distributions from unforced analysis shows good agreement with the exact asymptotic result at low frequencies.

Hybridní zóna kuněk Bombina bombina a B. variegata v jižních Čechách / Hybrid zone of the fire-bellied toads Bombina bombina and B. variegata in southern Bohemia

STRAKOVÁ, Helena January 2012 (has links)
In this paper I focused on the examination of chosen localities inside the hybrid zone of the fire-bellied toads, where the occurrence of these species and their hybrids was confirmed in previous research. The goal is to follow the development of these habitats, suitable for the presence of a threatened species, and trends in quantities of these toads. Another aim was to calculate the hybrid index of each individual based on the ventral spots and so to classify the populations on each locality according to species.

Zdravotní a sociální služby nabízené obyvatelům sociálně vyloučených lokalit v Českých Budějovicích / Health and social services offered to residents of socially excluded localities in České Budějovice

SÁDOVSKÁ, Petra January 2011 (has links)
My diploma thesis focuses on finding out what health and social services are provided to the inhabitants of socially excluded localities in České Budějovice. Social exclusion is a process within which the access of individuals, groups of individuals or a community to sources, positions and opportunities enabling the involvement into social, economic and political activities society, is substantially impeded or completely prevented. The seriousness of the situation is illustrated by the fact that the year 2010 was declared the European European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. One of the possibilities to deal with this situation is to provide health and social services, such as field programmes, social counselling, low-threshold services for young people and crisis assistance. My thesis aims at finding out whether health and social services provided to the inhabitants of socially excluded localities in České Budějovice are available, sufficient, oriented in the right direction, and whether they are used. At the beginning of the theoretical part, I made a brief definition of the terms social exclusion and poverty. Further, I described the main problem spheres of socially excluded citizens to which health and social services should react, and I also added a description of the current situation in individual socially excluded localities selected and of the specification of health and social services that the thesis deals with. The end of the theoretical part contains a summary of the theoretical part and subjects for my own research. The objective of my thesis was to survey the availability and sufficiency of services, especially in the health and social services offered to the inhabitants of socially excluded localities in České Budějovice. The defined objective of my thesis was achieved. To achieve it I used in the practical part the qualitative research, questioning method, the semi-controlled interview technique and analysis of the available data. Research was carried out in two selected sets, one of which consisted of inhabitants of chosen socially excluded localities, and of providers of health and social services in České Budějovice. The data obtained may be used by providers of services to consider an extension of these services. Further, it may serve as an output for an expert article or a basis for further research realised in this field.

As is well known, quantum fields studied in TQC satisfy the second principle of locality of space-time points. To them, refer to fields that have location-point type or that are located punctate. In this dissertation, will be the construction of free quantum fields Dirac, with location-type "string". In contrast to the usual fields, living in space-time point, they live in semi-straight line beginning at a certain point in Minkowski space and extends to infinity in a certain space-like direction. This location is permitted by the principles of relativistic quantum physics, since the fields admit the construction of local observables. The interest in location-string type is due to the fact that a location is less strong, which implies a less singular behavior at high energies, described by quantum fields with point-type location. With this present an improved UV behavior. With this location less strong, we can then create more models interacting. Free fields with location-string type have been obtained for several particles [1, 2], from which they can make interacting models. To build models from the field interacting free, one must make an analysis of the function of two points corresponding free field. This analysis, however, will not be done in this work, since it is not the objective of the study. In this work we construct a quantum field-free Dirac-string type with location, which was verified in the Dirac equation and the ratio of covariance. We defined its current density and found that it is conserved. Finally, we defined the function of two points for location-string type, which can be verified the location of the string-type field.

Placement d'applications parallèles en fonction de l'affinité et de la topologie / Placement of parallel applications according to the topology and the affinity

Tessier, Francois 26 January 2015 (has links)
Computer simulation is one of the pillars of Sciences and industry. Climate simulation, cosmology, or heart modeling are all areas in which computing power needs are constantlygrowing. Thus, how to scale these applications ? Parallelization and massively parallel supercomputersare the only ways to do achieve. Nevertheless, there is a price to pay consideringthe hardware topologies incessantly complex, both in terms of network and memoryhierarchy. The issue of data locality becomes central : how to reduce the distance betweena processing entity and data to which it needs to access ? Application placement is one ofthe levers to address this problem. In this thesis, we present the TreeMatch algorithmand its application for static mapping, that is to say at the lauchtime of the application, and the dynamic placement. For this second approach, we propose the awareness of datalocality within a load balancing algorithm. The different approaches discussed are validatedby experiments both on benchmarking codes and on real applications.
