That's not how it sholud be in nature" : A qualitative study on pupils' knowledge about hydropower's effects in nature

Johansson, Erica January 2021 (has links)

To regain knowledge, to regain power : An ethnobotanical study of how traditional knowledge about medicinal plants in Jämtland is interpreted, used and passed on today

Askaner, Jennifer January 2021 (has links)
To regain knowledge, to regain power: An ethnobotanical study of how traditional knowledge about medicinal plants in Jämtland is interpreted, used and passed on today is an essay that explores different meanings of people's relationships with plants, traditional knowledge, trade, sustainability and local identity. It does this through the knowledge and stories shared by six persons with a common interest in medicinal plants in county Jämtland, Sweden. The interviewees illustrate different aspects of their relationships with plants. Through this, the thesis demonstrates how the knowledge about the medicinal plants is incorporated into the participants in the form of a doing. It also explores how this knowledge is traded and how trade includes various aspects of learning where the traditional knowledge is formed based on personal context and in relation to nature. How humans and nature interact and how nature gives man peace and health through continuous relationships is also prominent. The value of preserving this knowledge and how examples, such as the importance of sustainability, become a valued interpretation in a contemporary context. This is also true in regards to how nature can affect people's identity creation and how local identity can be linked to plants.  Keywords: medicinal plants, traditional knowledge, local identity, sustainability, trade, ethnobotany.

A Changing Arctic Climate : Science and Policy in the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment / Ett förändrqt klimat i Arktis : Vetenskap och politik i Arctic Climate Impact Assessment

Nilsson, Annika E. January 2007 (has links)
Climate change has often been framed as a global issue but slow progress in the global climate negotiations and an increasing need to plan for local adaptation have made it increasingly salient to also discuss the potential of other arenas for climate policy and knowledge production. This dissertation analyzes the interplay between science and policy at the international regional level based on a study of an assessment of the impacts of climate change in the Arctic. In this case, the regional arena brought new actors into climate knowledge production and policy with an increased emphasis on the complexity of social and cultural impacts of climate change among indigenous peoples. The dissertation also shows how the structure of regional political cooperation played a role in highlighting the Arctic as a bellwether for global change. Meanwhile, the political negations that were linked to the regional climate impact assessment were ruled by the same political dynamics and policy positions as the global climate negotiations. The process illustrates how the structure of international cooperation can influence knowledge production about climate change. The dissertation emphasizes the role of vertical interplay among political regimes and how new arenas can make an assessment salient, credible, and legitimate to different actors. It also highlights the political dimensions of focusing on particular spatial scales and governance levels in climate knowledge production and policy.

Marginalized Indigenous Knowledge and Contemporary Swedish Colonialism: The Case of Reindeer Husbandry in Gällivare Forest Sámi Community

Mumford, Elaine January 2021 (has links)
In the Forest Sámi community (Skogssameby) of Gällivare in northeastern Sweden, reindeer husbandry is in peril as commercial interests degrade viable reindeer habitat. Among clear-cut forest and young plantations, between highways and railroad tracks, reindeer seek dwindling food. Pressed into smaller and smaller patches of land, they become easier targets for large predators and run out of food more rapidly, forcing greater intervention by herders to ensure the survival of the reindeer. Two large wind power development projects, which, if built, will dominate the landscape, could catalyze a collapse in reindeer husbandry in Gällivare Sameby (Sámi community) from which reindeer herders and the reindeer population may struggle to recover. This loss would be catastrophic from human rights, ecological, and sustainability perspectives. Reindeer husbandry is a key cultural activity for the Sámi people, Europe’s only recognized Indigenous group; reindeer are also native to Sweden, and even a localized collapse in the population could have far-reaching ramifications for the local ecosystem; and reindeer are a critical source of sustainable food in the harsh arctic and sub-arctic climate of Sápmi. This case study is concerned with the pressures and encroachments on reindeer husbandry that have been observed by Henrik Andersson, a reindeer herder, activist, and board member of Gällivare Forest Sámi community. Through four weeks of fieldwork, including participatory observation and semi-structured interviews, I determined the issues that Henrik considered most pressing and attempted to gain a holistic understanding of the socio-ecological system. In this paper, I have examined the main challenges to the viability of reindeer husbandry in Gällivare Skogssameby and their relationship to one another and discussed the extent to which these challenges are caused and exacerbated by ongoing colonization of Swedish Sápmi and based in Sweden’s colonial history in the region. / Dálkke

Enhet eller mångfald? : En dekonstruktion av samernas biblioteks bibliotekskatalog / Unity or Diversity? : A Deconstruction of the Saami Library Catalogue

Holmquist, Jenny January 2020 (has links)
Introduction. This thesis is set in the field of critical knowledge organization and indigenous knowledge organi- zation. Building on the theory of domain analysis I chose the Saami Library in Sweden as the domain for this thesis. The purpose was to identify the structures of power affecting how the lives and experiences of the Saami people are represented in the library catalogue and in the classification systems used, and to examine the views on knowledge expressed in the classification systems. Theory and method. This thesis builds upon the writings on deconstruction. I seek to deconstruct the cata- logue and the classification system using tools derived from the writings of Jacques Derrida. Analysis. Nine posts from the catalogue, and the classification codes entered there were analysed. Emphasis was put on analysing the DDC classification as this is the primary classification system used. Results. From analysing the classifications and the catalogue posts I found that the representations of the Saami experiences varied depending on which subject class the book belonged to. A majority of the posts analysed were classified as social sciences in DDC whereas the classifications were more varied in the Swedish SAB- system. Conclusion. Two structures have been identified. The first structure places the Saami experiences as some- thing that is other, in relation to which the mainstream is defined. The second structure places the Saami experi- ences as part of a diversity, separate from the unity of the mainstream society. This structure only acknowledges the existence of diversity if this means that the position of the unity is strengthened. Concerning the second purpose of the thesis I find that a western knowledge perspective has got a hegemonic position in the DDC, which means that other knowledge systems such as indigenous knowledge is not seen as such but as something only related to a specific group. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.
