Informationsåtervinning på ett Specialbibliotek för Tvärvetenskaplig Forskning : med utgångspunkt i domänanalys / Information retrieval in a library specialized in an interdisciplinary subject : a case study of domain analysis

Löfgren, Anna January 1996 (has links)
The main object of this master thesis is to examine whether domain-analysis could be used toorganize the collections in a library serving interdisciplinary studies, and in that case - howthat could be done. The thesis is based on a case study of a library for Asian studies, which alsoserves as a library specialized in that subject in the Nordic countries. The author has used, i.e.interviews and observations examining who the users of the library are and how these seekinformation. A theory part deals with some earlier studies of information users within arts andsocial sciences, and these are compared to the users of the examined library. The thesis states that one has to look at the different disciplines in which research is done (andcould be done) at the institute to which the library belongs, and that subject terms could beadded to the various documents from the view of those domains.

Med sinne för detaljer : En domänanalytisk studie av ämnet Textilvetenskap vid Uppsala universitet med fokus på föremålsdokumentation / With a sense of details : A study of artifact documentation within the field of Textile Studies at Uppsala University using a Domain analytical framework

Sjöberg, Kristin January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this two year master thesis is to study the knowledge production within the field of Textile Studies at Uppsala University, with special focus on the use of artifact documentation as a research method. With domain analysis as a theoretical framework, ontological and epistemological assumptions as well as historical and social aspects are studied in relation to the research process. Qualitative research methods are used, including interviews, observations and text analysis. In the analysis of the knowledge processes in the field, perspectives on tacit knowledge and the concept of documents, are used as a theoretical basis.   In the field of Textile Studies, the artifacts are used as one of the main objects of study, along with archival and pictorial sources. The main epistemological assumptions are that artifact analysis is dependent on a knowledge base, where technical handicraft skills, contextual knowledge and practical experience of object observation are the most important qualifications. The research process reflects these assumptions, where observation and documentation are used as methods of gaining knowledge.

Ämnesordstilldelning : en praktik i förändring. En jämförelse mellan författares och indexerares ämnesordstilldelning. / Administrating subject headings : a practice in transformation. A comparative study of indexer and author generated subject headings.

Emanuelsson, Malin, Pettersson, Amanda January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to compare subject headings by the authors of the work and those administrated by professional indexers. The empirical setting for the study lies within the sociological discipline. The questions asked are: What overall similarities and differences between subject headings administrated by authors versus indexers can we find? What qualitative advantages and disadvantages can we establish between subject headings generated by natural language versus controlled vocabularies?Subject headings in the Swedish national library catalogue Libris and in five Swedish universities platforms for academic publishing are studied and compared. Today it is praxis at Swedish universities that administration of subject headings is done by authors and not by professional indexers. We consider this to be a clash between professions. The paper is based on Birger Hjørlands domain analysis. We discuss the practice of subject heading administration within these two professions. Furthermore we wish to determine advantages and disadvantages with subject headings indexed by natural language versus controlled vocabularies. / Program: Bibliotekarie

Registrering av konstbilder : En översikt av forskning och praktik i en domänspecifik form av kunskapsorganisation / Art Image Registration : A Review of Research Themes and Practice in a Domain-Specific Form of Knowledge Organization

Johnsson, Magnus, Lecander, Kristofer January 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to present a review of research themes and practice in the field of art image registration. The objectives of the review are twofold. The primary task is to distinguish which problems, in regard to theory and practice, that have been dealt with in the field of art image registration and the secondary task is to investigate which discursive, institutional and tool-related factors have had an impact on theoretical discussions and practice in the art image domain. The empirical content in the review is structured according to four epistemological viewpoints and is analyzed with a domain analytical approach. The result of the study is that two major problems are frequently discussed in the art image domain, namely lack of standardization and which discourse is the best suited for registration of art images. Furthermore, staff education, institutional users, lack of coordination within the domain, incompatibility between discourses and lack of suitable registration tools are factors that have been affecting the discussions and practice within the domain. / Uppsatsnivå: D

Den heterosexuella bibliotekarien : Om BTJ, folkbibliotek och indexering av gaylitteratur / The straight librarian : About the indexing of gay fiction in public libraries

Johansson, Anna January 2008 (has links)
This Master’s Thesis examines the subject indexing of all Swedish gay fiction published from year 2000 until 2007. This is done from a queer theoretical- and domain analytical perspective. The study is conducted in the catalogue BURKsök created by BTJ which is the largest library media company in Sweden. The purpose of the study is to examine the heterosexual norm in fiction indexing and to study to what extent gay fiction is to be found by subject. Asking research questions about the vocabulary available in the subjects headings list used by BTJ, the description of gay fiction in BURK-sök and the influences this has on the indexing of gay fiction in Swedish public libraries. A quantitative study is conducted by gathering and analysing the subject headings given gay fiction in BURK-sök and a random selection of public libraries using their service. Results show that the indexing of gay fiction in BURK-sök to a large extent do not describe the gay-theme of the book and that the libraries that buy their subject headings from BTJ most often do not change the headings. The study concludes that there is a heterosexual norm in fiction indexing and that this has a negative effect on the retrieval of gay fiction by subject. / Uppsatsnivå: D

Användningen av HBTQI-relaterade ämnesord i svenska folkbibliotek : En analys av Libris katalog / The use of LGBTQI related descriptors in Swedish Public Libraries : An analysis of Libris catalog

Malinen, Matilda, Moberg, Viktoria January 2022 (has links)
This study focuses on LGBTQI related descriptors for fiction in Libris catalog from a knowledge organizational point of view, specifically domain analysis. It investigates how descriptors related to the LGBTQI-community are used, what different perspectives and points of views may have influenced how they are assigned, and whether it is possible to shed light on LGBTQI-certified and uncertified public libraries degrees of subject knowledge. Previous research indicates that in the absence of a guiding policy regarding intersectional collection development, libraries LGBTQI content consist mostly of representation for the white, gay, adult, male experience. A quantitative content analysis of 18 certified and 24 uncertified swedish public libraries collections showed that ”lesbian women” is the most used descriptor, but it is uncertain whether this group is the most represented one or if it is simply more visible due to the fact that it goes against the norm. The results also showed lacking representation in some areas in relation to descriptors. When it comes to certified and uncertified libraries we did not see any major differences in their work with the descriptors.

Biblioteks- och informationsvetenskap : en domänanalys av disciplinens intellektuella struktur utifrån paradigmen bibliotek respektive information / Library and information science : a domain analysis of the discipline and its intellectual structure from the perspective of the two paradigms library and information

Bolin, Irina, Smith, Jonathan January 2023 (has links)
The aim of this study was to conduct a domain analysis of the intellectual structure of Library and Information Science (LIS) from the perspective of Richard Rubins’ (2016) notion of the discipline as consisting of two separate paradigms: a library-paradigm and an information-paradigm. In accordance with the purpose of the study and the theoretical definition of the field of LIS, seven library science journals and five information science journals were identified as the basis of the study. Accordingly, bibliographic data from 5556 documents, published between the years of 2015-2022, were collected from the Web of Science. The library-paradigm revolves around the research areas of academic libraries, information literacy and library instruction. The information-paradigm is both founded on and driven by a technological incentive with strong interdisciplinary ties with computer science. In conclusion, the library-paradigm consists of research areas that to a greater extent are identified as information science research areas than the other way around. To some degree, the result shows that it is reasonable to adhere to the notion of a library-paradigm and an information-paradigm within LIS. However, the close ties between library science and information science implies that the discipline of LIS should not be considered to consist of the two paradigms. On the contrary the discipline should be regarded as consisting of library and information science and that these two spheres of the field should not be separated when conducting an analysis of its intellectual structure.

Förändringar inom kunskapsorganisation vid ett humanistiskt specialbibliotek : En domänanalytisk studie över Vitterhetsakademiens biblioteks verksamhet och samling

Wallin, Emma January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to carry out a contextual analysis based on Birger Hjørland’s socio-epistemological theory and thereby create a coherent picture of Vitterhetsakademiens biblioteks (KVHAAB) activities, collection and knowledge organization from a historical perspective. The questions that are analyzed in this paper are how the knowledge organization, classification and search capabilities correspond to the goals that KVHAAB has set for the institution. To answer these questions, transcriptions and notes from interviews, field trips and documents about the section were used as primary sources. Interviews, analysis of documents and domain analytic method were used as methods to collect sources and perform the analysis. The method I am using to examine these questions is qualitative interviews based on the theories and methods of Steinar Kvale and Svend Brinkman. The analysis is focused on library and information scientific aspects.  The results show that KVHAAB’s knowledge-organizing tools emerged historically and pragmatically and adapted to institutional and material practice. KVHAAB has been a pioneer by participating in various digitization projects early on. At the same time, historical preferences and focus are reflected from different times in the directories used on KVHAAB. Based on an awareness of the complexity of the descriptive mission, several initiatives have been taken to develop new routines and standards for cataloging and indexing of the material. In accordance with Riksantikvarieämbetets (RAÄ) goal of preserving, developing and utilizing the cultural heritage, there is still a future need for KVHAAB to make collections visible both in digital form, but also to expand the use of reading space, physical lending and outward operations.  This paper is published as a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science at Uppsala University in Sweden.
