Optimal measurement locations for parameter estimation of distributed parameter systems

Identifying the parameters with the largest influence on the predicted outputs of a model revealswhich parameters need to be known more precisely to reduce the overall uncertainty on themodel output. A large improvement of such models would result when uncertainties in the keymodel parameters are reduced. To achieve this, new experiments could be very helpful,especially if the measurements are taken at the spatio-temporal locations that allow estimate the parameters in an optimal way. After evaluating the methodologies available for optimal sensor location, a few observations were drawn. The method based on the Gram determinant evolution can report results not according to what should be expected. This method is strongly dependent of the sensitivity coefficients behaviour. The approach based on the maximum angle between subspaces, in some cases, produced more that one optimal solution. It was observed that this method depends on the magnitude of outputs values and report the measurement positions where the outputs reached their extrema values. The D-optimal design method produces number and locations of the optimal measurements and it depends strongly of the sensitivity coefficients, but mostly of their behaviours. In general it was observed that the measurements should be taken at the locations where the extrema values (sensitivity coefficients, POD modes and/or outputs values) are reached. Further improvements can be obtained when a reduced model of the system is employed. This is computationally less expensive and the best estimation of the parameter is obtained, even with experimental data contaminated with noise. A new approach to calculate the time coefficients belonging to an empirical approximator based on the POD-modes derived from experimental data is introduced. Additionally, an artificial neural network can be used to calculate the derivatives but only for systems without complex nonlinear behaviour. The latter two approximations are very valuable and useful especially if the model of the system is unknown.

Background: Studies have described the aggregate results of federal funding for health professions education at the national level, but analysis of the long‐term impact of institutional participation in these programs has been limited. Purpose: To describe and assess federally supported curricular innovations at East Tennessee State University designed to promote family medicine and nurse practitioner graduate interest in rural and underserved populations. Methods: Descriptive analysis of a survey to determine practice locations of nurse practitioner graduates (1992‐2002) and graduates of 3 family medicine residencies (1978‐2002). Graduates’ (N = 656) practice locations were documented using specific federal designations relating to health professions shortages and rurality. Results: Overall, 83% of family medicine residency and 80% of nurse practitioner graduates selected practice locations in areas with medically underserved or health professions shortage designations; 48% of family physicians and 38% of nurse practitioners were in rural areas. Conclusions: Graduates who study in an educational setting with a mission‐driven commitment to rural and community health and who participate in curricular activities designed to increase their experience with rural and underserved populations choose, in high numbers, to care for these populations in their professional practice.

Position-based games for mobile terminals : development of a prototype for Pocket PC

It is predicted that the market for position-based services is going to reach an annual turnover of billions of dollars in a few years. Besides this, also the game industry is estimated to meet a bright future, and there is a great interest already. This master’s thesis looks at a service that combines these two areas. The result is a position-based game called Mystery that is developed for the handheld computer Compaq iPaq 36-serie, which is well suited for this kind of game. To be able to locate a player we have used Ericsson’s Mobile Positioning System, MPS, which uses GSM positioning. The alternative would have been to use the Global Positioning System, GPS, but then the handheld computer would require extra hardware that is not available on the market yet. The prototype consists of a client and a server application. They are both developed in Java and they are communicating with each other through an http- protocol. One conclusion we have drawn form our work is that the kind of game we have developed requires higher accuracy than is achieved with GSM today, even though it is still possible to play the game. The disadvantage now is that the players have to move long distances, which is most likely if they are going by train, bus etc. A better accuracy would make it possible to shrink the distances so that it would also be remunerative to walk. Performance improvement of a grid-connected microgrid system using superconductive fault current limiters

For effective operation of microgrid systems (MGSs), it is important to understand the major types of power grid failures and how to deal with them. Detecting the fault, locating it, and isolating the faulty line are important to avoid damaging components and interrupting the service for customers. This will also improve the reliability and protection level of the system during fault conditions. Among the most successful protection methods to limit fault currents in power systems is the fault current limiter (FCL). The FCL improves the reliability of the system, voltage stability, and the fault current reduction. However, limited researches consider its applications inMGSs. The location and impedance size of the FCL play a major role in limiting fault currents in the system. Several studies concluded that installing FCLs near all generators, transformers, or loads in the system enhanced the performance of the system during fault conditions. However, increasing the number of FCLs in the system leads to an increase in cost. This dissertation proposes several effective approaches to specify the optimal locations and impedance values of the required number of installed FCLs in a grid-connected MGS. These FCLs improve the reliability and the protection level of the system by limiting fault currents during fault conditions. The goal is to reduce the required number of installed FCLs in the system. These installed FCLs must be able to reduce fault currents under the interrupting ratings of circuit breakers in the system. This goal will lead to lower the cost of installed protection devices in the system. In order to achieve this goal, this dissertation presents a novel fault management approach, sensitivity analysis, and an optimization model to find the optimal solutions. The study of this dissertation is meant to be used during the planning stage of power distribution system design. The results of this dissertation prove the robustness of the proposed approaches. This enhances the system’s performance while minimizing the required number of installed FCLs. Their sizes limit fault currents within safe ranges. Thus, the FCL significantly improves the reliability and protection scheme of the grid-connected MGS.
