Detail Levels in an Interactive 3D Landscape Model: Effects on Recall and Preference

Högström, Linus, Kerstinsdotter, Tea January 2024 (has links)
As interactive 3D environments are being implemented within our community, examining their efficiency and gathering insights into user's perspectives becomes increasingly important. This study aimed to address two research questions: “Does the level of detail in an interactive 3D landscape model lead to differences in participants' performance on a memory recall test?” and “What are participants' preferences, interests, and subjective understanding of the 3D model?”. The term LOD was used to standardise guidelines for the different levels of detail in the two models compared. A total of 30 participants took part in the experiment, completing tasks in the interactive 3D landscape environment containing a 3D model (LOD1 or LOD2), followed by a memory recall test. The analysis utilised Independent samples t-tests and correlation analysis. Additionally, participants provided feedback on their preferences, interest, and subjective understanding, which were analysed using thematic analysis and Chi-squared tests. The study found no statistically significant difference in memory recall between the groups according to an independent samples t-test. Chi-squared tests revealed that participants in both groups expressed a similar understanding of the models. Thematic analysis revealed that comments on the model were similar regarding interest. Participants in both groups preferred the more detailed model when presented with both images; some were motivated by the fact that it enhanced their understanding. Future research could compare more considerable differences in detail levels (LOD1 vs LOD3 ) and use different approaches to gather insights into participants' memory recall, preferences, or other aspects of interest.

Improving RDF data with data mining

Abedjan, Ziawasch January 2014 (has links)
Linked Open Data (LOD) comprises very many and often large public data sets and knowledge bases. Those datasets are mostly presented in the RDF triple structure of subject, predicate, and object, where each triple represents a statement or fact. Unfortunately, the heterogeneity of available open data requires significant integration steps before it can be used in applications. Meta information, such as ontological definitions and exact range definitions of predicates, are desirable and ideally provided by an ontology. However in the context of LOD, ontologies are often incomplete or simply not available. Thus, it is useful to automatically generate meta information, such as ontological dependencies, range definitions, and topical classifications. Association rule mining, which was originally applied for sales analysis on transactional databases, is a promising and novel technique to explore such data. We designed an adaptation of this technique for min-ing Rdf data and introduce the concept of “mining configurations”, which allows us to mine RDF data sets in various ways. Different configurations enable us to identify schema and value dependencies that in combination result in interesting use cases. To this end, we present rule-based approaches for auto-completion, data enrichment, ontology improvement, and query relaxation. Auto-completion remedies the problem of inconsistent ontology usage, providing an editing user with a sorted list of commonly used predicates. A combination of different configurations step extends this approach to create completely new facts for a knowledge base. We present two approaches for fact generation, a user-based approach where a user selects the entity to be amended with new facts and a data-driven approach where an algorithm discovers entities that have to be amended with missing facts. As knowledge bases constantly grow and evolve, another approach to improve the usage of RDF data is to improve existing ontologies. Here, we present an association rule based approach to reconcile ontology and data. Interlacing different mining configurations, we infer an algorithm to discover synonymously used predicates. Those predicates can be used to expand query results and to support users during query formulation. We provide a wide range of experiments on real world datasets for each use case. The experiments and evaluations show the added value of association rule mining for the integration and usability of RDF data and confirm the appropriateness of our mining configuration methodology.

BIM I TOTALENTREPRENAD: PROJEKTERINGENS INFORMATIONSLEVERANSER FÖR PRODUKTIONENS GRUNDLÄGGNING / BIM IN A DESIGN-BUILD CONTRACT: THE INFORMATION DELIVERIES OF THE DESIGN PROCESS FOR THE FOUNDATION WORK OF THE PRODUCTION

Lindell, Frans January 2017 (has links)
Purpose: The building industry is characterised by mainly consisting of temporary project organizations with much interdisciplinary cooperation but with little continuity of process between the unique projects. There is a big focus on time and immediate action as part of the actors’ frame of reference, and every activity and new work method should give immediate advantages in time savings and more efficient work to be readily accepted. The need for standardised work methods is very visible when BIM is introduced in the projects. To actively use the BIM-model on site creates demands on the content and that a design schedule is followed. BuildingSMART International (2010) writes: ”If the information required is available when it is needed and the quality of information is satisfactory, the construction process will itself be significantly improved”. The aim of this work is to produce a suggestion of how the sequence of information deliveries should be in the starting production of the loadbearing system in a design build project. Method: To reach the aim a literature study has been conducted to create the theoretical framework for the study. A case study has been conducted on a design build project with a deep foundation. Empirical data has been collected by means of interviewing some of the project actors and conducting a document analysis of project documents such as drawings and protocols. Findings: The report has mapped the sequence of information deliveries (including what information content and what level of development they need to have) for the initial production of the loadbearing system in a design build project. This contribution of knowledge with the process map and information demands can be built upon, to allow for implementation in the BIM tools and thus make the work easier and push the use of BIM forward. Implications: With the above results the report has contributed with a few started puzzle pieces in a big puzzle of information and deliveries in the correct sequence and level of development. To complete the puzzle the information deliveries from the specifications also needs to work correctly. The report has shown advantages by working with BIM in this part of the building process. The report suggests clarification of meaning by using both names, level of detail and level of development, in Sweden. Limitations: The report is limited to describe what information deliveries the contractor needs from the structural designer when it comes to piling and foundations. It also describes the information deliveries needed by the structural designer to be able to meet the information need of the contractor.

LOD: uma abordagem para desenvolvimento de objetos de aprendizagem multimídia e interativos / LOD: an approach to the development of multimedia and interactive learning objects

Silva, Marco Aurélio Graciotto 18 June 2012 (has links)
Such benefits can be improved by considering instructional design and the multimedia and interactivity features of current computing devices, providing a systematic method to develop learning objects. Considering such context, this thesis defines an approach to the development of multimedia and interactive learning objects, considering the digital television scenario. This approach is named LOD (Learning Object Development) and is composed of (1) a reference process (SPLOD Standard Process for Learning Object Development) from which we defined a process for learning objects development (LODP Learning Object Development Process) suitable for engineering of open educational resources; (2) a model-driven development method (LODM Learning Object Development Method) that integrates conceptual, instructional and interaction modeling of learning objects; and (3) a set of tools that establish a prototype for an environment for learning object development named LODE (Learning Object Development Environment). The LOD approach was evaluated with multimedia and interactive learning objects development realized as multimedia presentations and interactive digital television applications aimed at the Brazilian Digital Television System and its Ginga middleware. The results evince the benefits of the integrated approach, providing an agile and systematic development and fostering the reuse since the initial models of the learning object engineering process

Effektivisering av ekologisk dagvattenhantering i stadsmiljö / Efficiency of ecological stormwater management in urban areas

Backström, Martin, Wikström, Ludvig January 2013 (has links)
In the city of Jönköping problems with the irregular flow, erosions and transport of sediment materials are recurring in the brook Strömsbergsbäcken. The problems is somewhat caused by an increased flow of storm water in the brook, which leads to high flow peaks in some parts of the brook since the original furrow is not dimensioned for the increased amount of water. The purpose of this project work is to make ecological drainage management in urban environments with a high amount of storm water discharge more efficient. The objective with the report is to create valuable material of how to accomplish ecological drainage management in urban areas and that the report will be useful for future similar connections. To fulfill the objective, the following three questions have been designed as a significant part of the final project report: How can the load on the general drainage system be reduced? How can the pollution effects of storm water runoff in urban areas be reduced? Which treatments are appropriate to enhance the ecological storm water management in Strömsbergsbäcken ? The methods that have been used to solve these questions are document- and literature studies, and also a case study. The thesis results shows that the storm water flows from four of the nine areas that has its outlets in Strömsbergsbäcken, need to be treated through some kind of a solution or method that delays the water flow. The treatment could be performed in the area, before the storm water reaches the storm water network, which leads to Strömsbergsbäcken. The storm water flows can also be reduced by treatments adjacent to the outlets in the brook, where the largest flow peaks occurs. For example an essential solution to decrease the flows in Strömsbergsbäcken is to reconstruct the old dam located near one of the outlets into a basin, which will delay the stormwater flows.

Contribution à la définition d’un modèle d’ingénierie concourante pour la mise en oeuvre des projets d’infrastructures linéaires urbaines : prise en compte des interactions entre enjeux, acteurs, échelles et objets / Contribution to the definition of a concurrent engineering model for the implementation on urban linear infrastructure projects : taking into account the interactions between issues, stakeholders, scales and objects

Tolmer, Charles-Edouard 07 November 2016 (has links)
Elle participe également à la numérisation du secteur de la construction / However, the information management within an infrastructure project (road, rail, airport and other civil engineering works) also requires the use of specific methodologies and concepts like the concepts of ”level of detail” , ”level of development” or ”level of abstraction”. They are used to describe the relevant information that have to be exchanged between stakeholders, according to the modeling objectives in order to meet the project requirements. In the specific context of infrastructure projects, these tools are poorly defined, insufficient and sometimes bring to contradictory models. With a view to progress towards concurrent engineering design, our research is a contribution in two parts. Based on the principles of systems engineering, the first part is about to provide a methodology for requirements and relevant information identification to respond and control this response. The second part describes the project conceptual data model : it deals with the structure of the objects that model in connection with the requirements identification. This proposal is accompanied by a redefinition of several types of existing levels (detail, development, information, abstraction, etc.). These inputs are tested on a project of urban freeway in an industrial context. The exchange of information is at the center of BIM. The accuracy and quality of exchanged information participate in both technical and managerial project success. Our proposed methodology allows to change practices and the vision that the construction sector looks forward to the information it creates. It also participates in the digitalization of the construction sector

EN JÄMFÖRELSESTUDIE MELLAN MANUELL UPPMÄTNING OCH LASERSKANNING VID OMBYGGNATION / A COMPARISON STUDY BETWEEN TRADITIONAL BUILDING SURVEY AND LASER SCANNING IN RENOVATION

Al-yousifi, Yani, Deniz, Mustafa January 2020 (has links)
Purpose: In a survey from the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning, important causes for deficiencies, faults and damage in renovation projects has been identified. Lack of time proved to be the most cause, which also entails large costs of action to remedy the faults/damages. Digital tools provide opportunities for streamlining time and costs. Laser scanning is one such tool. However, the knowledge of laser scanning is not extensive in the construction industry and/or is assumed to cost a lot. The aim of the work was to compare laser scanning against traditional building surveying method to know which method is more advantageous regarding profitability. Method: To achieve the objectives of the work, a survey strategy was used that was both qualitative and quantitative. Literature study and interviews gathered knowledge about the advantages/disadvantages of the two building surveying methods (laser scanning and traditional) and factors that affect the profitability when using them. Calculations were performed to compare the costs of the methods regarding the complexity of the project. Findings: The generated result shows that laser scanning has more advantages than traditional building surveying. Laser scanning takes less time to perform in bigger projects and results in greater accuracy in the as-built documents than traditional building surveying, among other things. From a cost-benefit perspective it is important that for each specific project calculations should be made separately for the two building surveying methods to see which one is less expensive. The project used in this thesis would have been more profitable with laser scanning as a surveying method, while for other projects it might be more profitable with traditional building surveying. Implications: The study indicates that laser scanning is more profitable in terms of time and cost savings. Laser scanning should be chosen as a surveying method if you want to save time and get better accuracy, which results in less errors in the project planning. For larger projects, laser scanning is also recommended from a cost perspective. The survey also gives clients and contractors a better view of the benefits from using laser scanning. Limitations: The study was limited to treating only terrestrial laser scanning when surveying existing buildings prior to renovations, hence the result cannot be generalized to other types of laser scanning. Keywords: Laser scanning, Traditional building surveying, BIM, Profitability, Renovation, Complexity, LOD.

Time Scheduling- A case study that compares traditional methods and BIM-based methods

Fagerblom, Albin, Kulak, Patryk January 2020 (has links)
Purpose: Today there is big room for improvements in the work with logistics and scheduling on construction sites. Increased complexity has led to increased demands on planning. However, studies have shown that construction is one of the least digitalised industries today, in spite of all tools available. The purpose of the study is to study the advantages of using BIM in the work with logistics and scheduling compared to the traditional methods available, and in that way see how this increase efficiency. Method: The research methods that was chosen to answer our issue are case studies and literature studies. Those methods are the best suited for these types of studies that are going to be done. Collection of data has been made through qualitative interviews with employees at Gärahovs Bygg AB. Findings: The study has shown that the interviewees believe that communication between different participants in the project can be improved using the BIM-based method. They also believe that it will be easier to see that everything is included in the planning phase. The benefit of using BIM: • The BIM method can provide a visual advantage in the communication between contractors and subcontractors. • The BIM method can give a clearer picture of how the work will proceed through visual simulations. • The BIM method can make it easier to see if all the planned activities are included in the planning phase. • The BIM method can make it easier to make reconciliations against the schedule during the project. Limitations: The study is limited to only make a production schedule over one typeapartment in a project, and to only make comparisons with this. The study has only been made together with one company. For a more reliable result, more companies would have to be included in the study. A simulation of a larger model could have given an even clearer picture of what advantages and disadvantages that comes with the BIM-based method.
