Characterization of the Mechanosensitivity of Tactile Receptors using Multivariate Logistical Regression

Tactile sensation is a complex manifestation of mechanical stimuli applied to the skin. At the most fundamental level of the somatosensory system is the cutaneous mechanoreceptor, making it the logical starting point in the bottom-up approach to understanding the somatosensory system and sensation, in general. Unfortunately, a consensus has not been reached in terms of the afferent behavior of mechanoreceptors subjected to compressive stimulation. In this study, several afferent mechanoreceptors were isolated, mechanically stimulated with controlled compressive loads. Their responses were recorded and the sensitivities of the individual receptors to compressive stimulation were statistically evaluated by correlating the compressive state of the skin to the observed“all-or-nothing" responses. A host of linear techniques have been employed previously to describe this multiple-input, binary-output system; however, each of these techniques has associated shortcomings when employed in this context. In particular, two shortcomings are the assumption of linear system input-output and the inability of the model to assess individual input-output associations relative to concurrent input in a multivariate context with interacting input. Therefore, a non-linear regression technique called logistical regression was selected for characterizing the mechanoreceptor system. From this model, the relative contributions that each component of the stimulus has upon the neural response of the receptor can be quantitatively assessed and extrapolated to the greater population of cutaneous mechanoreceptors. Since this study represents a novel approach to receptor characterization, a framework for the application of logistical regression to the time-series representation of the multiple-input, binary-output mechanoreceptor system was established and validated. Subsequently, in-vitro experiments were performed in which the afferent behavior of tactile receptors in rat hairy skin were recorded and the relative association between a number of biologically meaningful stimulus metrics and the observed neural response was evaluated for each receptor. Through the application of logistical regression, it was determined that cutaneous mechanoreceptors are preferentially sensitive to the rate of change of compressive stress when force-control stimulated and both stress and its rate of change when position-control stimulated.

Reactor disposal evaluation at Sol Voltaics

The purpose of this project was to map the current method for decommissioning / disposing of the Nano-wire reactor at Sol Voltaics. Additionally, alternatives should be suggested based on the findings during the mapping processes and the subsequent analysis. The aim of the presented alternatives was to improve the current workflow for reactor decommissioning based on five identified areas; Rules and Regulations; Environmental aspects; Safety aspects; Economical aspects and Logistical aspects. The existing disposal procedure was divided into six steps. The first step involves a purging procedure to make sure no hazardous gases remain in the reactor. The second step is to dismantle and seal the reactor. The third step is to move the reactor to a loading dock. The fourth step is the transport between Active Biotech in Lund and Sydblästring AB in Malmö. The fifth step is the disassembly and cleaning process of the reactor parts, including waste management. The sixth and final step is to move the cleaned parts to SYSAV in Malmö for final disposal. Finally, Rules and Regulations as well as Safety aspects were identified as having partial improvement potential. Ideas for possible alternatives in these areas was devised and analyzed according to all five areas to make sure that the improvements in one area would not bring undesirable shortcomings in another.

A soja é a commodity brasileira que mais influencia positivamente a balança comercial do Brasil, que apresenta vantagens competitivas neste mercado como tecnologia de produção, amplas áreas produtivas e clima propício para o cultivo. Porém, um gargalo significativo para a expansão da cultura da soja no Brasil, é sua atual condição logística. O estado do Mato Grosso que lidera a produção nacional de soja, é exemplo importante destes problemas logísticos, tanto no transporte, quanto na estrutura de armazenagem. Assim, o objetivo principal deste trabalho é o de analisar os gargalos logísticos das principais rotas de escoamento de grãos de soja do Estado do Mato Grosso. O trabalho baseia-se em pesquisa exploratória qualitativa utilizando-se de estudo de caso por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas. O estudo de caso sobre o complexo portuário Miritituba-Barcarena no Pará evidenciou que esta nova rota é uma saída logística encontrada pelo setor privado para driblar os problemas logísticos do estado do Mato Grosso, utilizando-se do modal hidroviário como principal meio de transporte. Este diferencial logístico é corroborado pelos resultados das entrevistas semiestruturadas realizadas, o que leva à conclusão de que o modal rodoviário não deve ser o único e exclusivo meio de escoamento da soja em grão no estado do Mato Grosso, seja por suas condições impróprias ou por não ser a forma otimizada de transporte de commodities. Por fim, destaca-se que este caso além de ser uma opção viável que contribui para que a produção de soja do Mato Grosso possa ser escoada e exportada, deve ser encarado como exemplo de prática a ser adotada por gestores de empresas e para estudos e iniciativas futuras. / Soy is the Brazilian commodity that most positively influences Brazil\'s trade balance, which has competitive advantages in this market such as production technology, large production areas and climate favorable for cultivation. However, a significant bottleneck for soybean expansion in Brazil is its current logistics condition. The state of Mato Grosso, which leads the national soybean production, is an important example of these logistical problems, both in transport and in storage structure. Thus, the main objective of this study is to analyze the logistical bottlenecks of the main routes of flow of Mato Grosso State soybean. The work is based on qualitative exploratory research using case study through semi-structured interviews. The case study of the port complex Miritituba-Barcarena in Pará showed that this new route is a logistics solution found by the private sector to circumvent the logistical problems of the state of Mato Grosso, using the water transport as the main means of transportation. This logistics differential is corroborated by the results of semi-structured interviews, which leads to the conclusion that the road transport should not be the sole and exclusive mean of soybean flow in Mato Grosso, either by their improper condition or for not being the optimal commodity way of transportation. Finally, it is emphasized that this case, in addition to being a viable option that contributes to the production of soy in Mato Grosso being flowed and exported, it should be seen as an example to be adopted by company managers, for studies and future initiatives.

O objetivo deste trabalho é o de mostrar como os centros de distribuição (CD) podem melhorar a qualidade de atendimento ao cliente e o transporte urbano na atividade de distribuição de bebidas. Para isso, é necessário um aprofundamento teórico dos conceitos de logística e de todas as atividades que a compõe como vendas, produção, armazenagem, distribuição, custos, sem se esquecer dos conceitos de marketing, do relacionamento com o cliente e da sua satisfação. Isso para obter um sistema integrado entre a produção e o consumidor. Foram realizados levantamentos entre vários distribuidores de bebidas de forma a relatar a situação atual desse mercado. Foram analisados distribuidores franqueados de grandes marcas assim como pequenos distribuidores independentes. Os resultados das pesquisas mostram que boa parte desses distribuidores desconhece técnicas de armazenagem e de roteirização, trabalhando empiricamente. Verifica-se uma grande desvantagem competitiva entre os pequenos distribuidores franqueados de marcas de menor expressão ou independentes, em relação aos grandes distribuidores franqueados de grandes marcas com grande penetração no mercado, em razão destes terem entre outras vantagens a possibilidade de melhor aproveitamento de sua capacidade de distribuição. Conclui-se que os centros de distribuição, integrando todas as marcas ou pelo menos todas as marcas de menor expressão, pode ser a estratégia adequada para uma distribuição com qualidade e rentabilidade. / The purpose of this paper is to show how the center of distribution (CD) can improve the quality on service for clients and urban transportation in the beverage distribution activities. Therefore, it is necessary to make a deeper study of logistical concepts and all the activities that are part of it, such as sales production, storage, distribution, costs, including also the concepts of marketing, relationship with the client and his/her satisfaction. It is an order to get an integrated system between production and costumer. A research was accomplished among several beverage distributors in order to make a reference of market field. Franchisee distributors for large trade marks as well as small independent distributors were analysed. The result of the studies show us that a larger amount of these distributors do not realize the storage and routing know-how, working empirically. It is verified a great competitive desadvantage between the few-expressive or independent small franchisee distributors and the large franchisee distributor representing the large trade marks with a huge acceptance in the market. Then, it is concluded that the center distribution integrating all the trade marks or at least all the less expressive ones can be the adequate strategy for a qualified and profitable distribution.

Les prestataires logistiques : tentatives de règlementation et quelques spécificités sur le cas du droit marocain et du droit français / Logistical service providers : regulatory attemps and some special features about the case of Moroccan law and the French law

La présente thèse a pour objet d’évaluer le niveau d’encadrement juridique des activités logistiques, d’identifier les causes de son retard et de proposer des réflexions pour le mettre à jour. Dans notre analyse nous avons fait référence aux cas du droit français et du droit marocain. Les résultats de la recherche montrent qu’il existe un déphasage important entre les pratiques logistiques très nombreuses et variées et le peu d’encadrement juridique qui leur a été élaboré jusqu’à présent. Les causes de ce retard se justifient, en grande partie, par la complexité de l’activité logistique (champ d’application très large et hétérogène) et aussi par sa nouveauté (innovation systématique dans le secteur logistique), contraintes spécifiques à cette nouvelle activité et aux quels le droit n’a pas tenu vraiment compte. Il ressort de ce constat que le rôle organisateur du droit des activités économiques tel l’exemple de l’activité logistique n’est pas automatique. Le droit peut agir positivement et rapidement ou moyennement ou pas du tout. Tout dépendra de la qualité de l’action de droit proposée et de sa capacité d’encadrement et d’adaptation aux particularités de chaque activité à réglementer. En nous référant au cas de l’activité logistique et pour réduire de sa complexité, nous avons proposé plusieurs réflexions allant dans le sens de la simplification de son champ d’application (réduire le problème de l’hétérogénéité) et de la maîtrise des comportements et des relations des prestataires logistiques par groupes de familles (donner plus de précision sur les relations contractuelles dans le secteur de la logistique). / This thesis aims to assess the level of legal supervision of logistical activities, to identify the causes of its delay and to propose reflections to update it. In our analysis we referred to the case of French law and of Moroccan law. The results of the research show that there is a significant discrepancy between many varied logistical practices and few legal supervision that has been elaborated for them so far. The causes of this delay are justified largely by the complexity of the logistical activities (application field very broad and heterogeneous) and also by its novelty (systematic innovation in the logistical sector), specific constraints of this new activity which the law did not take really into account.It appears from this assessment analysis that the organizing role of law of economic activities such as the example of the logistical activities is not automatic. The law can act positively and quickly or moderately or not at all. Everything will depend on the quality of the action of law proposed and its ability of supervision and adaptation to the particularities of each activity to be regulated. By referring to the case of logistical activity and to reduce its complexity, we offered several reflections going in the direction of simplification of its application field (reduce the heterogeneity problem) and mastery of behaviours and relations of logistical service providers by groups of families (give more precision about contractual relations in the logistical sector).

The exploitation of Veddesta in Järfälla county, Stockholm, is currently the largest exploitation site in Scandinavia. The project includes not only the construction of living quarters and work places but also an extension of the city’s blue subway line from Akalla with an additional two stations. The complications with the exploitation, from a logistic perspective, arises with the fact that the exploitation site is open for public use along with multiple entrepreneurs and builders sharing the compact and busy roads. The county of Järfälla has identified the need of a collective logistics solution to manage the issue of coordinating the traffic generated by the exploitation.The report aims to suggest a logistic solution to coordinate all transports within the exploitation of urban areas and form effective transportation paths from the supplier to the construction site. The investigation is based on an examination of three project situated in the Stockholm region, Hagastaden, Gallerian and Norra Djurgårdsstaden along with traffic analyses for the area compiled by Prolog Bygglogistik AB. The assignment of creating and implementing a logistic solution for the exploitation of Veddesta is assigned to Prolog Bygglogistik AB, with Järfälla county as the employer and the report as an independent investigation.The logistical solution for Veddesta is based on principles from the conventional logistic method, Lean and Supply Chain Management. It will be situated at the existing checkpoint that has been implemented for Barkarbystaden, due to high capacity of parking trucks. This logistical model requires the use of a logistical planning system to create an even distribution of deliveries during the day, along with the requirement of a 75% usage of the trucks loading capacity. All being requirements implemented in the investigated projects.

Globalisation has made logistics more important than ever in developing countries. If one business function raises their costs on a service, the end customer will usually pay the price in the store. When the end customers cannot afford the end price on a product, they will turn to other alternatives. This thesis examines how process management would affect the local population within the Dominican Republic. By beginning to question why some functions exist the effect will be economically visible in a DuPont according to the theories. Supply chain management seeks to manage the whole processes from A to Z in the most efficient way possible. The study was conducted during 8 weeks in the Dominican Republic. Eleven managers were interviewed to see how important SCM is for DR. The conclusions of the study is that Supply Chain Management is very important for DR. Well managed supply chains allow higher quality goods such as medicine and food to be accessed at a lower price by the local population. By targeting the economical position of working capital in a process an organisation can reach an increased ROI without the use economical means (increase the income/delivery service or reduce the costs). / MFS study financed by the Swedish International Development cooperation Agency, SIDA
