Managing the bi-directional flow of materials to increase customer satisfaction and reduce cost : A case study at Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology

Cannava, Catharina January 2019 (has links)
Purpose: This thesis explores the bi-directional flows of material perceived by manufacturing firms in the supply chain and accordingly derive suggestions to properly manage these flows to increase customer satisfaction and reduce cost. Methods: A literature review was summarized in a conceptual framework. This framework was then illustrated in a case. In this case, 11 semi-structured interviews, 3 participant observations and 3 types of archival records were collected. Analysis and discussion of the preliminary conceptual framework compared to the case was the basis for the modified conceptual framework that was designed. Main findings: In general material flows downstream the supply chain, but because of quality issues, recycling or returns material need to flow upstream the supply chain. This thesis provides a holistic view of how to manage these flows with a modified conceptual framework. Academic contributions: Previously, almost no academic research has been conducted on decision variables when it comes to managing material flows upstream the supply chain. This thesis contributes to closing this gap by suggesting different actions to properly manage the bi-directional flow of material. Furthermore, previous research addressing how to manage material flows has been re-accessed and expanded. Managerial implications: By using the framework, practitioners can determine helpful activities to increase customer satisfaction and reduce cost. This means management gets directions of where to allocate their resources. Limitations: The perspective and evidence in this research are only collected from the manufacturer’s point of view, valuable insight from suppliers and customers may have been overlooked. The suggestions of how to manage the bi-directional flow of materials have not been tested and the outcome of these recommendations has not been compared to KPIs or other measurements.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Alessandro Riquetti.pdf: 3330851 bytes, checksum: c7b3461400e9e6d802395b99ad09a901 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-09-13 / The profile of the Brazilian transport mode, mainly roads, has caused many problems for society and organizations. Among them are: the poor condition of roads, bringing risks of accidents and the rising cost of transportation, increased levels of congestion in metropolitan areas and ports, generating more pollution and, difficulty in disposing of the crop, especially for export due to low productivity of road transport over long distances. One possible solution to replace the use of road transport is intermodal transport (Modal Shift). However, there are bottlenecks that need to be overcome in order to encourage the use of intermodal transport by shippers. The speed of the railroad is still low compared to other countries. On some routes, rail fares are high compared to highways and transhipment terminals have low productivity, making the transit time high. In this context, this study aimed to identify the influence of Modal Shift in the relationship between Performance Management and Logistics. Based on theories of business logistics, this study was conducted in two stages. In the first stage of exploratory nature, aimed at, to know more deeply the management of logistics and intermodal transport processes. The data collected through interviews and processed by content analysis revealed important factors for the continuation of the second step. Thus, with the results of the previous step, we carried out the research of a descriptive nature in order to identify the influence of modal shift in the relationship between performance and logistics management. To this end, we used semi-structured questionnaires and applied with the managers of member companies will ANDA (National Association for the Promotion of Fertilizers). The responses collected were processed by descriptive statistics and multivariate, and showed that: a) intermodal (modal shift), although presented as mediating variable between the logistics management and performance, it falls short of being considered influential on the performance and logistics; b) logistics performance for the domestic fertilizer industry may result from actions such as reducing waste products when changing modes, increase the speed of trains, increase productivity in transhipment terminals and warehouses and employ more efficiently the information technology. Because of these results, it can be concluded that the Modal Shift is used by logistics managers as a means to seek a balance between the rates charged by road and rail and also there is a long way to moving toward competitive advantage, based on logistics.

The Information Architecture Model Supporting Global Logistics Strategy : A Case Study on the Printed Circuit Board Industry of Taiwan

Su, Sheng-I 10 August 2006 (has links)
Under the competitive situation of globalization, the competition and challenges that the enterprises are confronting now are more rigorous than in the past. The PCB industries in Taiwan had ever ranked the third biggest in the world. However, on account of the shifting of the manufacturing bases in the worldwide, in 2002 the PCB output value in China had taken the place of Taiwan and become the third biggest in the world. And in the course of PCB industry development in China, the PCB enterprises from Taiwan had also participated in it early or late. The main inducing reasons were because of the undeveloped markets, low labor and land cost. When the arising of new and developing markets has made the scale of the enterprises expand from the arrangement of single area (Taiwan) into regional areas (Asia), the management range of the enterprise has also expanded at the same time and the management and cost problems it derived and the related problems caused by the management risks due to obscure information will be coming up. Therefore, how to connect the nerve center of the enterprise with each subsidiary, logistic warehouses, customers and suppliers of the group and integrate and set up the information network of upper and lower reaching customers and manufacturers and subsidiary and establish a set of mode suitable for the implement of information plans of the group and for the organization management so as to achieve the goals of fast information obtaining, policy making and real-time reaction and enable the overall arrangement of globalization to elaborate multiple effects, which is the purpose of the study. The study has analyzed the management of supply chain, the global planning and management mode and the application and development of information technology and also proceeded extensive analysis and research from the industrial structure, characteristics of PCB and its future competition superiority. Under the information goal of enhancing enterprise¡¦s competition superiority, the study has proposed related suggestions from the organization and management dimensions and information technology and application support dimension. 1. On the organization dimension and the plan of organization functions, achieve centralized planning so as to conform to the company¡¦s overall biggest profits; to maintain and implement of the subsidiary in each area to conform to the effects of localization and discrepancy; to avoid excessive centralized management which will cause the ineffectiveness of operation in each subsidiary or the excessive independence of the area which will cause the difficulties of the overall information establishment standardization and integration. Therefore, in addition to the original vertical framework, it has increased the planning of investigation organization functions (horizontal organization) so as to assist to help with the management and operation among between multi-site companies. 2. On the management dimension, it has developed modes from information system according to five stages of work: (1) the system planning stage (2) the system analysis stage (3) the system development stage (4) the conduction stage of system duplication and (5) system maintenance stage to scheme discussion topics like multi-area resources integration, multi-area coordinated collaboration system and multi-area rights and duties of labor division to be developed into an information construction management mode. 3. On the dimension of information technology and application support, according to the trade object and trade conduct of the enterprise, it has advanced the framework o f enterprise¡¦s information operation strategy and logistics management. Besides, it has conferred the framework of the information integration according to the aspect of resources sharing among the group¡¦s subsidiary so as to achieve the goals of supporting enterprise¡¦s strategy development and management optimization. Eventually it has proposed the blueprint of PCB industry system construction, the steps of system construction, and the constructional labor division mode of information among regional subsidiary of the group to be offered for the trade to refer to this framework under such global operation strategy and logistics management to develop the information system of supporting the enterprise¡¦s core competition superiority.

Exploration et exploitation, les formes d'ambidextrie organisationnelle dans l'innovation de services : le cas des prestataires de services logistiques / Exploration and exploitation, organizational ambidextry forms in service innovation : the case of logistics service providers

Kacioui-Maurin, Elodie 03 November 2011 (has links)
The research that we carry out examines the organization of incremental and radical innovations, both intra- and inter-enterprise, in the light of organizational ambidextry works (Tushman and O’Reilly, 1996, 1999; O’Reilly and Tushman, 2004; Birkinshaw and Gibson, 2004).Taking the case of logistics service provision, an industry concerned by the extensive innovation dilemma (Le Masson, Weil and Hatchuel, 2006), our research aims to study the organizational modalities implemented to innovate, but also to identify and understand the explanatory factors of the recourse to organizational ambidextry forms. Moreover, to our knowledge, no study has been performed on organizational ambidextry in the service industry. It is therefore, also about the identification of the specificities bound to the organization of innovation on service companies. To successfully achieve our research, case studies were performed with 8 Logistics Service Providers (LSP) companies. 49 interviews were carried out with the actors participating in the innovation process in each company. Secondary data (internal documentation, professional press, etc.) was also collected. The results enlighten the organizational modalities implemented to innovate in service companies and within interconnected companies for both researchers and practitioners. Our study also identifies the explanatory factors of the recourse to, and the combination of, organizational ambidextry forms. These factors are bound to the company’s characteristics as well as the characteristics of the innovation, but also to the inter-organizational relationship between the provider and its costumer.

A utilização do plano de gestão de logística sustentável como ferramenta de gestão: um olhar dos servidores da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria / Use of sustainable logistics management plan with management tool: a look from Santa Maria Federal University servants.

Gazzoni, Fernando 19 December 2014 (has links)
The sustainable logistics management plan was established by Decree 7746 of June 5, 2012, and with it all federal institutions were required to prepare logistic plans having sustainable development as the main point. For the success of this plan it is necessary to be incorporated into the organizational practices of each public administration servant. In the face of this situation and aiming to insert the plan and sustainable variable in UFSM organizational environment, the creation of action plans as main objective was defined. So we used a questionnaire to diagnose the profile of UFSM servants, assess the level of knowledge regarding sustainable issues and identify aspects considered the most important ones for the development of action plans. Besides, interviews were conducted with the setting-up committee of the PLS in UFSM in order to obtain a deepening of the process of design and its implementation. The results showed that the servants, regardless of individual factors, generally have a low level of knowledge on topics related to sustainability in public administration. Issues related to the development of sustainable construction projects, the realization of rational consumption campaigns and the re-use of materials were the main points raised by respondents as suggestions for preparing action plans. Later, the strengths and weaknesses in the organizational environment were identified in order to explore these aspects in planning actions. In the preparation of plans the aspects of the inclusion of them in the work routine had priority and enabled an initial discussion on the subject, as the level of knowledge is not satisfactory and it is essential to move forward on this discussion.
