The vicissitudes of the authentic self: a literary mapping of the authentic self from John Milton's Paradise lost to Bret Easton Ellis' Glamorama /Mark Wallbanks.

Wallbanks, Mark 01 February 2017 (has links)
Since the rise of individualism in the seventeenth century there has been increasing pressure on individuals to define themselves in the public eye. This has led to the recent phenomena of identity politics and self-branding. Yet how is one's true identity - if such a thing exists - ever expressed externally? How do individuals deal with the inner and outer aspects of identity? These are some of the issues which impinge upon the ethics of authenticity. This thesis investigates the development of the concept of the authentic self from its inception in the modern period to the postmodern. Through an analysis of the various tropes of literary texts, I shall illustrate how the concept of authenticity has travelled and transformed between cultural and temporal contexts. The body of the thesis contains five central chapters. Chapter 1 represents Paradise Lost (1667) as the end of one world and the beginning of another. The "Satanic" trope introduces the contingency of transgression and displacement in regard to authentic self-definition. With the birth of the modern epoch, I argue that the collapse of the epic totality instigated the liberation of self through the process of individuation, yet the corresponding loss of "place" in the social order evoked existential angst. In the second chapter I argue that Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe (1719) is an apposite inclusion in the tradition of St. Augustine's and Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Confessions. Through analysis of the "island" trope I assert that, even given the most perfect conditions of solipsism, the individual remains an inherently social being that retains a primordial compulsion for dialogical inscription of the self. In chapter 3, an analysis of the trope of "voice" as a metonym for ideology in Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1902) portrays Kurtz and Marlow as opposing sides of the authenticity struggle against the ideological allure of collective and absolute power. Chapter 4 associates Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer (1934) with the anarchic egocentrism and intense individualism of Max Stirner's philosophy as a means of rebelling against the demands of social collectivism. In this chapter I analyse the "dream" trope in terms of Miller's trademark use of surreal metaphor which, I argue, provides a means of escape from the influence of collective identities. Finally, the fifth chapter will discuss the trope of "image terrorism" in reference to Glamorama (1998). This trope addresses the problemata of the globally destabilising influences of celebrity and terrorism, the tyranny of consumerism, and the Debordian Society of the Spectacle. The chapter raises the question of how, indeed if, in a globalized postmodern world with ever reducing horizons of differentiation, travel remains the last viable option in the pursuit of the authentic self.

Renaissance cryptophilology: scholars, poets, and the pursuit of lost texts

Shapiro, Aaron Charles 12 March 2016 (has links)
This study offers a narrative of literary responses to lost texts, ancient and modern, from the age of Petrarch to the age of Milton. Whether continental scholars or English poets, the authors whom I consider share an abiding belief that the imagination is the right vehicle to access the otherwise irretrievable past, and that absent texts can be put to practical uses. Bringing together the work of textual critics, bibliographers, and literary scholars, the introduction evaluates available methods of studying lost texts and proposes an integrated framework for further research. The four chapters that follow provide four distinct answers to the question, what did early modern scholars and poets make out of lost texts? The first chapter finds Petrarch in his De remediis utriusque fortunae inaugurating a long-lasting tradition, the lament for lost books and libraries. I argue that, with help from Petrarch, the Florentine circle of Leonardo Bruni developed what would become a conventional language for explaining these losses. A chapter on scholarly misbehavior examines fifteenth- and sixteenth-century narratives—i.e., legends, lies, and slanders—about lost texts alongside the emergence of the humanist supplements, the efforts of early modern editors (e.g., Erasmus, Ermolao Barbaro) to fill lacunae in partial classical texts with their original compositions, sometimes surreptitiously. This practice of imitation-as-emendation led English authors—Shakespeare, Chapman, Jonson, and Burton—to complete the partial texts of their recent and medieval predecessors and to apprehend with their imaginations the literary heritage that they could not hold in their hands. In the two latter chapters, I argue that this interest sometimes took the form of an imaginative supplement, as when Spenser completes Chaucer's fragmentary Squire's Tale in The Faerie Queene, and sometimes the form of a meditation, as when Milton in "Il Penseroso" envisions English literary history as a series of incomplete works. Likewise, earlier claims about lost texts could simply be revived (e.g., in the invective of Thomas Nashe), or they could be repurposed in self-conscious tropes, as when Ben Jonson and Edmund Spenser entice their readers with representations of lost, unpublished, and unwritten works. / 2019-08-01T00:00:00Z

GPS-denied multi-agent localization and terrain classification for autonomous parafoil systems

Chiel, Benjamin S. 05 November 2016 (has links)
Guided airdrop parafoil systems depend on GPS for localization and landing. In some scenarios, GPS may be unreliable (jammed, spoofed, or disabled), or unavailable (indoor, or extraterrestrial environments). In the context of guided parafoils, landing locations for each system must be pre-programmed manually with global coordinates, which may be inaccurate or outdated, and offer no in-flight adaptability. Parafoil systems in particular have constrained motion, communication, and on-board computation and storage capabilities, and must operate in harsh conditions. These constraints necessitate a comprehensive approach to address the fundamental limitations of these systems when GPS cannot be used reliably. A novel and minimalist approach to visual navigation and multi-agent communication using semantic machine learning classification and geometric constraints is introduced. This approach enables localization and landing site identification for multiple communicating parafoil systems deployed in GPS-denied environments.

Disparities in follow-up adherence amongst pediatric patients with celiac disease

Blansky, Bradley 03 July 2018 (has links)
INTRODUCTION: Celiac disease is a chronic immune disorder for which the only treatment is strict life-long adherence to a gluten-free diet (GFD). Collaborative management through regular follow-up with a care team that includes physicians and dietitians may improve long-term outcomes. However, many individuals with celiac disease are lost to follow-up. OBJECTIVE: This primary objective of this study was to identify factors associated with pediatric celiac disease patients being lost to follow-up. Secondary aims included identifying adherence to recommended care practices by both patients and providers. METHODS: A chart review of 250 randomly selected children with biopsy-confirmed celiac disease diagnosed between 2010 and 2014 at Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) was conducted. Follow-up records were reviewed from diagnosis to 2017. Eligible children were diagnosed prior to age 18 and did not attend BCH solely for a second opinion. Demographics, medical history, visit information, and lab results were collected using an online database. RESULTS: Of the 241 eligible subjects (64% female, 1-17 years, median 9.7 years) the median time until lost to follow-up was 2.8 years from diagnosis (IQR, 1.0-4.7 years) with 22 subjects (9%) not attending any follow-up visits with their pediatric gastroenterologist (GI) after diagnosis and an additional 37 subjects (14%) lost within the first year. A majority of subjects (83%) attended a GFD education visit with a registered dietitian, although this was not associated with follow-up adherence (P>0.5). Excluding those who had aged out of the clinical practice, children who were adherent to follow-up had a younger mean age of diagnosis (95% CI 0.5-3.1, P<0.01). Children who were insured under Medicaid/CHIP (N=20) were more likely to be lost within one year compared to those with private health insurance (P<0.01). Celiac serologies taken at time of last clinical visit were abnormal in 25% of the subjects with available results (N=141) and the median time since diagnosis in this positive serology subgroup was 20 months (IQR, 12-29 months). DISCUSSION: The present study illustrates that children with celiac disease are not being followed-up adequately and that identifiable disparities exist in the pediatric celiac disease population. Within three years of diagnosis, 50% of the cohort was lost to follow-up with the majority of subjects lost within the first year of diagnosis. Children diagnosed at a younger age were more adherent to follow-up compared to those diagnosed during adolescence. Factors associated with decreased adherence included reliance on public medical insurance and older age at diagnosis. Improvement in long-term management of celiac disease may be achieved by increased outreach and education.

Kurt Weill's Little Masterpieces

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: This study focuses on three songs from stage works of Kurt Weill (1900-1950): “September Song” from Knickerbocker Holiday (1938), “Speak Low” from One Touch of Venus (1943), and “Lost in the Stars” from Lost in the Stars (1949). All from Weill’s time in the United States, these songs are adaptable as solos and have become American standards performed in various arrangements and styles of popular music by many different artists. The first part of this study is a biographical sketch of Weill’s life and music. It is intended to provide context for the three songs by tracing his beginnings as a German composer of stage works with volatile political messages, to his flight to the United States and his emergence as a composer of Broadway successes. The second part is a commentary on the composition of the three selected songs. The lyrics and musical content are examined to show how Weill’s settings convey the dramatic mood and meaning as well as the specific nuances of the words. Description of the context of these songs explains how they were textually and musically intended to advance the plot and the emotional arc of the dramatic characters. The popularity of these songs endures beyond their original shows, and so there is discussion of how other artists have adapted and performed them, and available recordings are cited. Weill’s songs, his little masterpieces, have proven to be truly evocative and so attractive to American audiences that they have undergone myriad adaptations. This study seeks to provide the personal and historical background of Kurt Weill’s music and to demonstrate why these three songs in particular have proven to have such lasting appeal. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Performance 2016

Lucros cessantes: análise das medidas de mensuração contábil utilizadas pelo Tribunal de Justiça do Estado de São Paulo / Lost profits: analyzing accounting measures used by the Tribunal de Justiça do Estado de São Paulo

Edgard Nogueira Junior 23 April 2013 (has links)
This study aims at verifying whether there is consonance between the measures used for the measurement of the damages for lost profits issued by the Tribunal de Justiça do Estado de São Paulo (TJSP) and those referenced in the Accounting literature applicable to the subject. Furthermore, we sought to identify TJSP\'s understanding of the measures applicable to such measurement calculations applicable to these findings. The study treats the interruption of the activities or of the business itself in a very specific manner, when the injured party is a legal entity. The content of 104 judgments issued by TJSP was analyzed from June 2012 to September 2012. The decisions were analyzed in light of the technique for content analysis and by means of descriptive statistics, basically relative and cumulative frequency analyses. Data analysis revealed that: (i) there is a connection between measures informed in the judgments issued by TJSP and the literature applicable to the subject, and (ii) the extent of this connection, regarding the concordance with the applicable literature, is partial, corresponding to 52.2% of the phrases identified in the analyzed sample. It was also found that 80.4% of the phrases used by TJSP to refer to the measures of the lost profits are represented by five (5) different idioms, which in turn, do not have the same meaning in accounting. Another aspect observed was the use of the term \'turnover\' as a reference to measure of profits applicable to the findings. Besides the fact that this term is not referenced in the literature as a valid measure, we identified STJ\'s decision to invalidate its use in claims for such damages. It could also be seen that, as part of other findings, TJSP\'s judgments use idioms that represent different criteria to measure lost profits. The main idiom corresponds to the term \'reasonable\', whose interpretation in order to operationalize the findings is subjective. The conclusion is that the use of accounting terms which do not have consonance with the literature to the subject may compromise the findings of the value of the damage and the effectiveness of the legal decision. In this context, there is not guarantee as to whether the value found faithfully describes the judge\'s intent in the judgment or that it matches the damage suffered by the injured party.

Casamento e sexualidade em processos judiciais e inquéritos policiais na Comarca de Ribeirão Preto (1871 a 1942): concepções, práticas e valores / Marriage and sexuality in lawsuites and police inquiries at ribeirão preto judicial district (1871-1942).

Rafael De Tilio 17 June 2005 (has links)
Much of actual famylie´s researches show the marriage´s importance while favoured site (but not the only) for the sentimental expression between lovers, their ascendency and descendency. Ancient phenomenon as long as ocidental society marriage changed in the eras. In Brazil marriage became more important in 19th – 20th passage (period of many changes) but there are not much researches study the cotidian relationships from that era using historical material. This research tried study how in brazilian society 19th – 20th , using Ribeirão Preto city as refence, marriage firmed as institution (which organize individuals´, families´ and social´s actions) by and for the juridical´s conceptions; in that context the (civil and criminal) legislation suffered changes which controled the sexual´s exercice, the moral and families´formation by fiancées e younges (reserving virginity) by marriage. 46 policial inquiry and 58 criminal about sexual crimes between 1871 (the oldest find) and 1942 (inaturation of the brasilian´s New Penal Code) process were selected in the Archive´s Justice Tribunal (Ribeirão Preto´s judicial district) reguled by the 1890 Penal Code. This documents were readed and their informations were analised for estabilish possibles relations among sexual criminality and mariiage´s incentive. About our material we can say: sexual crimes occorred between proximal´s accused and victim (friends our boyfriens), in maiority between national groups by desendance and color, which parents were responsable by acusations which result in archivements (40%), espontaneal´s marriages between acussed and victim (30%) and marriages after accused´s prison/law suit (11.5%) – marriage like, as legal garanty, criminal extinguision -, condenations (9.6%) and other ones without final (8.6%). The relation between accusation´s intention and resolution can be established when we pay attention for the document´s relats (witness, defensal lawyers, judges and police officers) whose resoltion (condenation or absolvation) were ruled by moral behaviors expected for men and women – punition for those who not followed the moral and juridical´s rules which estimuled marriages. The material analisis show us relations between criminal accusations and no marriage accomplishment by acused ones (and the victims looked for their parents or legal authorits to get their intention: marriage) or for to antecipate the union no consented by parents (and sexual crimes without intention of marriage also happens); in this way sexual crimes´accusations were used for punish those who do not want to marriage and for to promote marriages.

The monitoring of auditory and language development in the first year of life, enables early identification of hearing loss and referral of children to specialized services if the problem is confirmed. The objectives of this study were to examine the use of communication strategies with mothers of children with risk factors for hearing loss in adhesion to a Monitoring Program of Development of Auditory and Language, knowing the profile of mothers who return to monitoring and design that mothers have about the consequences of hearing loss in childhood. Study participants were mothers referred from a public hospital, who attended the hearing screening of infants performed in their first month of life. Infants with hearing screening results were normal but had some risk indicator, were booked into the program. Mothers received information through explanatory folder on auditory development and the consequences of hearing loss late addition to phone call two days before the scheduled date. The research was characterized with a prospective longitudinal quantitative and qualitative analysis. Data were collected from August 2011 to February 2012, obtained by the number of appearances in the book of records of infants and semi-structured interviews with mothers. Data from 2009 and 2010 to compare the frequency of returns of mothers. In 2009, 121 (49.19%) mothers adhered to the program, in 2010, 148 (50.17%) and in 2011, with the strategies of the call and the use of explanatory folder, 195 (58.38%) mothers joined. 53 mothers were interviewed, of which 38 (71.69%) said they had difficulties in attending assessments, although some factors have hampered attendance such as waiver at work and use of public transport. The main reasons for membership were: concern about hearing, presence of indicator of risk and return scheduled. Regarding the profile of mothers, the majority had completed high school, was in stable, coming from the city of Campinas and had no employment. The respondent group, 39 (73.58%) mothers were found to have some knowledge about hearing impairment. Most mothers worry about hearing the infant, with the issue of school learning and make the relationship between speech and hearing / Mestrado / Interdisciplinaridade e Reabilitação / Mestra em Saúde, Interdisciplinaridade e Reabilitação
