Treatments of Phase I consisted of four levels of nitrogen fertilization (urea 45%) of coverage (N0 = 0 kg/ha de N, N1 = 22,5 kg/ha de N, N2= 67,5 kg/ha de N e N3 = 135 kg/ha de N) and two levels base fertilization (B1= no fertilization; B2= with fertilization in the order of 170 kg/ha of the formula 05-25-25). The pasture was managed by cutes in accordance with its height. Each time the pasture reached the average canopy height from 20-25 cm, two samples (circular cuts - 0,0881 m²) were made leaving a residue of 10-12 cm. During this occasion a sample was collected with a square of 0,04 m² to determine the number of tillers and leaf area index (LAI). The entire profile of the canopy was cut. Phase II consisted of the evaluation of the residual effect of the fertilization treatments of Phase I on the production of corn grains. The base fertilization (NPK) and the application of nitrogen in coverage, significantly increase forage production of annual ryegrass of natural reseeding in soybean stubble in crop-livestock integration. Nitrogen fertilization linearly increase the weight of tillers and leaf blades. The averages of remaining ryegrass straw added to the soybean crop residues meet the appropriate amount for the implementation of the summer crop in the SPD. Nitrogen fertilization presents no residual effect on the crop yield of corn for grain in succession. / O experimento, dividido em duas fases (Fase I e Fase II), teve como objetivo avaliar a produção de forragem de azevém anual (Estanzuela LE 284) de ressemeadura natural na sucessão da cultura da soja submetido à adubação nitrogenada em integração lavoura-pecuária e o efeito residual da adubação na produção de grãos de milho (cultura sucessora). Os tratamentos da Fase I constaram de quatro níveis de adubação nitrogenada (ureia 45%) em cobertura (N0 = 0 kg/ha de N, N1 = 22,5 kg/ha de N, N2= 67,5 kg/ha de N e N3 = 135 kg/ha de N) e dois níveis de adubação de base (B1= sem adubação; B2= com adubação, na ordem de 170 kg/ha da fórmula 05-25-25). O pasto foi manejado por cortes seguindo um protocolo de altura. A cada vez que o pasto atingia altura média do dossel entre 20-25 cm eram efetuadas duas amostragens (cortes) circulares (0,0881 m²), deixando-se um resíduo de 10-12 cm. Na mesma ocasião era coletada uma amostra com um quadro de 0,04 m² para determinação do número de perfilhos e índice de área foliar (IAF), sendo coletado todo o perfil do dossel. A Fase II consistiu da avaliação do efeito residual dos tratamentos de adubação da Fase I sobre a produção de grãos de milho. As adubações de base (NPK) e de nitrogênio em cobertura aumentam a produção de forragem de azevém anual de ressemeadura natural em resteva de soja no sistema de integração lavoura-pecuária. A adubação nitrogenada aumenta de forma linear o peso de perfilhos e de lâminas foliares. As médias da palhada remanescente de azevém somadas aos resíduos da cultura da soja atendem a quantidade adequada para a implantação da lavoura de verão no SPD. A adubação nitrogenada não apresenta efeito residual sobre a cultura do milho para grãos em sucessão.

Bio-sociocultural aesthetics : indigenous Ramkokamekra-Canela gardening practices and varietal diversity maintenance in Maranhão, Brazil

This thesis is an attempt to bring to light the value and importance of gardening and varietal diversity maintenance in the indigenous Jê-speaking Ramkokamekra-Canela community of Maranhão, Brazil. Formerly a semi-nomadic community with small garden plots, the modern-day Canela have become subsistence horticulturalists with a dual garden plot system where species and varietal diversity thrive. Thus, the thesis seeks to understand this transformation through a focus on mythic, historical, and contemporary accounts of gardening activities and practices that appear to promote and maintain cultivated crop diversity. Through a comparison with other Jê-speaking communities in northeast and central Brazil, the thesis posits that Canela gardening and varietal diversity maintenance incorporate the transformation and continuity that are common aspects of Jê 'life-worlds.' Additionally, through an exploration of everyday gardening practices and individual and communal rituals in and around garden spaces, the thesis suggests that Canela gardening can best be conceptualized as a series of multi-sensory, embodied engagements between human gardener 'parents' and their growing plant 'children.' In order to explore these engagements fully, the thesis draws on phenomenological (in particular that promoted by British anthropologist Tim Ingold) and other approaches that seek to question the boundaries between the biological, cultural, and social dimensions of life. It is argued that in the emergent Canela 'bio-sociocultural life-world,' certain relational pathways between and among human gardeners and cultivated plants become valued and meaningful through an 'aesthetics of landscape' that incorporates multiple sensory modalities. Thus, the 'bio-sociocultural aesthetics' theoretical approach is put forward as a comprehensive way of understanding the Canela life-world and the myriad human-nonhuman engagements that unfold through and within it.

Ekologické důsledky polyploidizace u mokřadní rostliny šmelu okoličnatého (Butomus umbellatus) / Ecological consequences of polyploidization in populations of the wetland plant Butomus umbellatus

This thesis aimed on comparison of environmental requirements and morphological and biological traits of diploid and triploid cytotypes of wetland plant flowering rush (Butomus umbellatus), occurring in Eastern Slovak Lowland in unique mixed populations, and to develop primers for variable microsatellite loci suitable for further genetic studies. In total, 72 populations of Butomus umbellatus were found. The analysis of relative genome size by the flow cytometry (FCM) technique revealed 34 exclusively triploid cytotype populations, 8 exclusively diploid populations and 30 mixed populations of Butomus umbellatus. In mixed populations, the numbers of diploid and triploid individuals are quite equivalent and the plants create combined compact communities. Analyses of environmental characteristics of sites with specific cytotypes (PCA, RDA, ANOVA) revealed no difference in site requirements of diploid and triploid Butomus umbellatus plants. Morphometric analyses (PCA, CDA) of traits of 36 diploid and 54 triploid plants confirmed differing morphology of both cytotypes occurring in the nature. Subsequent replanting of these plants into pots and cultivation further increased these differences. Termite assemblage structure and function : a study of the importance of termites in lowland equatorial forests

Termites are important ecosystem engineers in tropical and sub-tropical terrestrial regions where they influence ecosystem processes by altering the physical and chemical structure of the habitat. Termites affect nutrient availability by decomposition and comminution (shredding) of organic matter and act as agents of bioturbation as they re-work substrates during the construction of nests, tunnels and runways. At present we have a relatively good understanding of termite diversity patterns in the tropics through the extensive use of the standardised transect sampling protocol by Eggleton et al. (1995). These diversity data suggest that there is a functional difference in termite assemblage structure, and potentially in termite abundance and biomass, among comparable habitats across continents. However due to the lack of comparable abundance and biomass data from South America this has not previously been confirmed. In this thesis I, therefore, collected extensive data on termite taxonomic and functional assemblage structure in a South American site in Peru. The data were used to compare termite abundance and biomass from two comparable sites in Africa (Cameroon) and south east Asia (Malaysia) in order to gain better understanding of the role termites play in ecosystem processes. I found that there was an intercontinental difference in the abundance and biomass of termite feeding-groups mainly due to the dominance of soil-feeding termites in Cameroon and the absence of fungus-growing termites from Peru. The impact of certain lineages on the intercontinental differences suggests that the differences may be due to biogeographical evolution. Moreover, Eggleton et al. (1998) show that larger-bodied soil-feeding termites in Cameroon process more energy per unit area than predicted by their body size. Due to the need for an examination of the allometric relationships in termite assemblages outside Africa and the development of a more sophisticated feeding-group classification I explore the findings in Eggleton et al. (1998) further using population density - body mass relationships in three termite feeding-groups among the three continental sites in Cameroon, Peru and Malaysia. I found that large-bodied soil-feeding termites in Cameroon and large-bodied wood-feeding termites in Peru had higher population densities than expected by their body masses. As the population density - body mass relationship is inverse to that of the energy - body mass relationship the results suggest that the two feeding-groups also use more energy than expected by their body masses. Further, we have a relatively good understanding of the role termites play as ecosystem engineers e.g. in nutrient cycling and distribution, however, compared with our understanding of wood and litter decomposition in tropical forests quantitative data on the impact of termites in soil processes is poorly understood. In this thesis I conducted, to our knowledge, the first in situ soil macrofauna exclusion experiment using translocated soil in Peru to examine the impact of termites on soil C and N loss. I found that termites promote soil C and N loss which may be linked to the increase in microbial activity due to the passage of soil through the termite gut as well as the affect termites have on bioturbation and nutrient distribution. To conclude, in this thesis I present the first intercontinental comparison of abundance and biomass as well as the first in situ soil macrofauna exclusion experiment to date. The link between termite ecology, biogeography and evolution is discussed as well as the contribution of this thesis to the field of termite ecology.

Comprendre l'émergence et la propagation des maladies infectieuses chez les animaux sauvages est devenue une priorité en santé publique et en conservation. En combinant la collecte de données et le développement de modèles épidémiologiques, cette thèse s'est focalisée sur la compréhension de deux phénomènes clés: (i) étudier comment l'hétérogénéité au niveau des individus, des groupes, de la population et de l'environnement influence la propagation de parasites et (ii) quantifier la transmission de bactéries résistantes aux antibiotiques depuis l'homme vers les animaux sauvages dans trois aires protégées d'Afrique (Tsaobis NP- Namibie, Lopé NP-Gabon et Dzanga-Ndoki NP- République Centrafricaine). Les principaux résultats de ce travail montrent que : (1) De multiples facteurs incluant la température, la pluie, l'utilisation du territoire, le genre, l'âge et la condition physique influencent la richesse spécifique de parasites gastro-intestinaux chez le babouin chacma, (2) Les contacts entre animaux autour des points d'attractions de l'habitat peuvent influencer de manière importante la propagation spatio-temporelle d'une maladie, (3) La transmission d'entérobactéries résistantes semble avoir lieu depuis les humains ou le bétail vers les animaux sauvages dans des zones où le contact entre ces populations est élevé, (4) Le gradient de densité de gorilles produit par la chasse peut générer une augmentation de prévalence d'un parasite avec la distance au point d'introduction. Les conclusions de ce travail ouvrent de nouvelles possibilités pour l'étude des maladies émergentes chez les animaux sauvages. / Understanding the emergence and spread of infectious disease in wild animal populations has become an important priority for both public health and animal conservation. Combining the collection of empirical data with the development of epidemiological models, this thesis focuses on understanding two key issues of wildlife epidemiology: (i) how heterogeneity at the individual, group, population and landscape level affects parasite spread (ii) investigating whether transmission of antibiotic resistant bacteria from humans to wildlife is occurring within three protected areas of Africa (Tsaobis NP-Namibia, Lope NP-Gabon and Dzanga-Ndoki NP-Central African Republic). The main findings of this work indicated that: (1) multiple-scale factors including temperature, rainfall, home range use, sex, age and body condition influence gastro-intestinal parasite richness among wild baboons; (2) animal contacts around ‘habitat hotspots' can substantially influence the spatio-temporal dynamics of a disease; (3) antibiotic resistant enterobacteria seem to be spreading from humans/livestock to wildlife when the territory overlap between these two populations is expected to be high; (4) gradients in gorilla density created by bushmeat hunting can reverse the expected pattern of decreasing parasite prevalence with distance to human-spillover. The conclusions of this work open new possibilities for studying the mechanisms explaining the spread of emerging infectious diseases among wild animals.

Este estudo foi realizado na Fazenda Nhumirim, propriedade da EMBRAPA Pantanal, Nhecolândia, Pantanal do Mato Grosso do Sul. Diante da necessidade do reconhecimento dos elementos do meio ambiente natural, bem como de sua dinâmica, para a busca do equilíbrio ambiental na região, esta pesquisa teve como objetivo estudar a vegetação da Nhecolândia. A Nhecolândia é uma das mais expressivas regiões criatórias de gado de corte do Brasil. As pastagens nativas correspondem a grande variedade de unidades de vegetação, de campos a cerrados. O uso espacial e temporal dessas pastagens por bovinos, sua disponibilidade, qualidade e produtividade pecuária são influenciados pelas condições ambientais, principalmente inundações e precipitações. Para conservação e utilização sustentável dos recursos naturais e pastagens nativas no Pantanal, é de grande importância mapear as principais unidades ambientais, estabelecer unidades de vegetação/pastagens para conhecer as áreas de sobrevivência de espécies de animais, visto que o Pantanal corresponde à uma coleção de ambientes de equilibrio dinâmico frágil; a planície possui declividades baixissimas que provocam um deslocamento extremamente lento das águas, a dinâmica hídrica é particular: as chuvas e os rios abastecem os lençóis freáticos causando inundações; e a alimentação do rebanho baseia-se quase que integralmente em pastagens nativas. Tendo em vista a utilização da vegetação como pastagem, houve necessidade de estudar as relações entre os tipos de vegetação, especialmente as campestres, e seus ambientes de ocorrência. Se fez necessário propor uma classificação para vegetação e mapeamento local das unidades de vegetação, relacionando-a aos ambientes de ocorrência, com vistas à extrapolação para o pantanal da Nhecolândia. A vegetação foi classificada como: Unidade Habitualmente Seca, Unidade Habitualmente Sazonal e Unidade Habitualmente Úmida, as quais apresentam diferenças quanto à preferência pelos bovinos, às características florísticas, fisionômicas e, principalmente quanto a umidade habitual do solo, em função da topografia e das precipitações pluviométricas ao longo do ano. / This work was carried out on Fazenda Nhumirim, owned by EMBRAPA Pantanal, in Nhecolândia, Pantanal (lowlands) of Mato Grosso do Sul. This research aimed to study the vegetation of Nhecolândia to meet the needs of recognizing the elements of the natural environment as well as its dynamics to reach environmental balance in the region. Nhecolândia is one of the most significant beef-cattle raising regions in Brazil. The native pastures correspond to a great variety of vegetation units, from grassland to Brazilian savannahs. The spatial and temporal use of these pastures by cattle, its availability, quality and cattle-raising productivity have been influenced by environmental conditions - mainly floods and rainfall. For conservation and sustainable usage of natural resources in Pantanal, it is of utmost importance to map the main environmental areas, to establish vegetation/pasture units in order to know the animal species survival areas, because Pantanal corresponds to a set of environmental units of fragile dynamics balance - the plain has very low declivities which provoke an extremely slow move of the water, the hydric dynamics is unique: the rains and rivers supply the water tables causing floods; and the cattle feed almost exclusively on native pastures. Bearing in mind the use of the vegetation as pasture, there has been a necessity of studying the relations among the varieties of vegetation, especially the wild ones, and their environment of occurrence. It was necessary to propose a classification for the vegetation and a local mapping of the vegetation units, relating it to the environment of the occurrence, aiming to extend the use of the results to the whole lowlands in Nhecolândia. The vegetation was classified as: Usually Drought Unit, Usually Seasonal Unit and Usually Wet Unit, which presented differences as to preference by cattle, flowering characteristics, physiognomic and, mainly as to usual wetness of the soil, due to topography and rain falls throughout the year.

Vibrio cholerae é uma bactéria autóctone do ambiente aquático e pode causar sérios riscos à saúde quando cepas patogênicas são acidentalmente consumidas. V. cholerae se encontra associada aos copépodes em concentrações que podem alcançar mais de 1000 vezes a densidade das bactérias livres na água. Se ingerido, um único copépode pode conter a dose mínima de bactérias necessária para a manifestação da doença. Verificar a presença e a distribuição dos sorogrupos O1 e O139 no complexo estuarino de Santos-Bertioga e plataforma continental adjacente em associação com o zooplâncton e seus distintos grupos taxonômicos foi o objetivo desse trabalho. O zooplâncton (>330 µm) foi coletado e a detecção dos sorogrupos O1 e O139 realizada nas amostras totais e nos táxons mais abundantes através das técnicas DVC-DFA e DFA (Contagem direta de bactérias viáveis e ensaio de imunofluorescência direta). Amostras fixadas em formol foram maceradas e preservadas numa solução tampão estéril, previamente aos experimentos. Para o DVC-DFA, animais vivos foram selecionados, lavados, macerados e uma alíquota transferida para meio de cultura. A presença da bactéria no zooplâncton foi correlacionada a parâmetros abióticos e bióticos. O sorogrupo O1 foi detectado em 88% e O139 em 77% das amostras de plâncton no complexo estuarino de Santos-Bertioga, valores mais altos do que os publicados na literatura mundial para outros estuários. Para a plataforma, a presença dos sorogrupos foi menor devido à salinidade mais elevada. Foram testados isoladamente 43 táxons, pertencentes a 9 filos. Dados inéditos da associação entre Vibrio cholerae e quetognatos, estágios larvas de equinodermos, urocordados e ovos de peixes foram registrados. Este trabalho sugere a existência de um gradiente costa-oceano para V. cholerae aderido ao zooplâncton de águas costeiras e ampla capacidade de V. cholerae O1 e O139 em aderir a diversos táxons do zooplâncton marinho. / Vibrio cholerae is an autochthonous bacterium in the sea and may cause serious health problems when pathogenic strains are accidentally ingested. The objective of this study was to verify the presence and distribution of Vibrio cholerae O1 and O139 serogroups over Santos-Bertioga estuarine complex and adjacent continental shelf in association with zooplankton and over its distinct taxa. Zooplankton (>330 µm) sampling was carried out and detection of V. cholerae O1 and O139 assessed in whole samples and on most abundant taxa by the DFA and DVC-DFA (Direct Viable Count and Direct Fluorescence Assay) methods. Briefly, formalin-fixed samples were grinded and preserved in a sterilized buffer solution previously to the experiments. Live animals were selected, washed and grinded and an aliquot transferred to culture media for the DVC-DFA assay. Presence of these bacteria on zooplankton was correlated with physical and biological parameters of the seawater. Serogroup O1 was found on 88% while O139 on 77% of the samples from Santos-Bertioga estuarine complex, values higher than the ones found in other estuaries in global literature. For the adjacent shelf, detection was smaller due to higher salinity. 43 taxa, belonging from 9 phyla were individually tested. Inedited data from the association of V. cholerae and chaetognaths, Urochordata, larval stages of Polychaeta, Echinodermata, and fish eggs were documented. This study suggests the existence of an inshore-offshore gradient in V. cholerae attached to zooplankton from coastal waters and the high ability of V. cholerae O1 and O139 to adhere on diverse marine zooplanktonic taxa.

Eco-ethological response of great apes and other rainforest mammals to selective logging in Cameroon/Réponse éco-éthologique des grands singes et autres mammifères à l'exploitation forestière sélective au Cameroun.

With more than ¾ of the forest surface of Cameroon allocated to logging, the survival of many rainforest species will depend on the way in which timber production forests will be managed in this country for the next decades. Management decisions to be applied should be directed systematically towards a minimization of the negative impacts on the ecosystem as a whole, including on the animal populations living in these forests. This requires a detailed understanding of the response of wildlife to selective logging as it is currently practised in Central Africa. This thesis reports results of a longitudinal monitoring of abundances of nine mammal species in a forest concession over a four years period. From 2003 to 2006, four wildlife censuses have been conducted in the active core of FMU 10.030 allocated to the logging company PALLISCO. Our study area covers 176 sq-km and include several logging compartments and unlogged areas. The diversity of specific responses to the introduction of human activities into the habitat is at the scale of the biological diversity of the habitat itself. A particular attention was paid to two emblematic species of the Cameroonian forests, western lowland gorillas G.g. gorilla and the common chimpanzees Pan troglodytes. During this work, we studied 1) how logging at industrial scale affects the spatial distribution of nine mammal species, including great apes, in timber production forests of South-eastern Cameroon, and 2) the nature of pressures exerted on animal populations within an active forest concession (anthropic, ecological, ethologic, etc). Our first results indicate that the extraction of valuable timber species generates a spatial reorganization of gorillas and chimpanzees, inducing local modifications of population densities. This spatial reorganization seems to be mainly due to human activities per se rather than to modifications of the habitat structure or changes in the availability of fruits for these species. Compared with other mammals, great apes are at the two extreme opposites of a gradient of sensitivity to the habitat disturbances created by logging. Gorillas, as well as other "generalist" species like duikers, seem to thrive in logged forests, probably attracted in these areas by the secondarisation of the vegetation. Their densities decrease temporarily in logging compartments during logging operations but these species recover quickly, suggesting a repulsive effect of the human presence in the forest rather than a major alteration of the habitat quality for them. Rather "specialist" species seem to react by increasing the size of their foraging area. These are the sitatungas Tragelpahus spekei and bushpigs Potamochoerus porcus, two typical species of swamp forest with Raffia spp. and semi-inundated forests. These particular biotopes in the heart of the production forests seem to be playing the role of refuge zone for these species. Finally, two species were identified as being explicitly vulnerable to logging activities: the chimpanzees and forest elephants Loxodonta africana cyclotis. Their abundances did not recover to original values during the period of study indicating that they still undergo some kind of ecological and/or anthropic pressures after the end of logging operations that is strongly adverse to them. In order to contrast the ecological and/or anthropic factors ruling gorillas' and chimpanzees' spatial distribution in the habitat, we have used a spatial modelling technique called “Ecological Niche Factor Analysis - ENFA". ENFA-generated models for these two species mainly retained anthropic variables to explain great apes local repartition in the study area. For gorillas, it was mainly explained by the local pattern of logging compartments and the time that passed since the end of logging operations. Globally, this species avoids the areas of forests showing a high rate of human frequentation and is attracted to old logged areas. As for the chimpanzees, their spatial distribution is influenced mainly by the presence of roads which are largely avoided. The periphery of logged compartment seems to be a zone of convergence for chimpanzee communities that have probably been driven out from logging compartments during operations, but these movements of populations would be limited to short distances. The vulnerability of the chimpanzees is consequently explained by the absence of demographic mechanisms enabling them to avoid the disturbed zones while reducing the territorial conflicts. The general trend in great ape abundances in an active logging concession confirms that even closely related species can show divergent capacities of survival when confronted to human disturbances. Our work highlights that chimpanzee communities demonstrate some spatial inertia, contrarily to gorillas which easily manage to avoid human activities. This inertia would be probably at the origin of its sensitivity to current forestry practices. Our results confirm White & Tutin (2001)'s socio-ecological explanation for the vulnerability of chimpanzees to logging in forests of Central Africa. Knowing this, it is imperative to set up concrete conservation actions aiming at maintaining the chimpanzee populations of in Cameroonian timber production forests. Practically, selective logging would easily be compatible with the preservation of the majority of rainforests mammals if concrete measures aiming at decreasing the negative impacts of logging were effectively applied. As a general rule, the proximity between logged areas and some zones that can serve as refuge seems to be a determining factor of the persistence of rainforests mammals in logged forests. A line of thought would be thus to ensure safe shifts of populations towards these zones in order to guarantee the avoidance of disturbances and, later, the recovery of densities in logged forests. In this sense, our main recommendation consists in promoting a delimitation of logging compartments into narrow strips so as to reduce the distance to be walked by an animal to geographically avoid human disturbances. Additionally, it is necessary to set up well-designed biomonitoring programmes to follow up trends in wildlife abundances and promote a flexible management that can be adapted according to the evidence of detrimental events to wildlife. / Avec plus de ¾ de la surface forestière du Cameroun allouée à l'exploitation forestière, la survie de nombreuses espèces de mammifères dépendra de la façon dont seront gérés les massifs de forêt de production de ce pays dans les décennies à venir. Les mesures de gestion à appliquer devraient être orientées systématiquement vers une minimisation des impacts négatifs sur l'écosystème dans son ensemble, y compris sur les populations animales résidant dans ces forêts. Ceci nécessite une compréhension détaillée de la réponse de la grande et moyenne faune à l'exploitation forestière sélective telle qu'elle est effectivement pratiquée en Afrique Centrale. Cette thèse de doctorat rapporte les résultats d'un suivi longitudinal, sur une période de quatre ans, des abondances de neuf espèces de mammifères au sein d'une concession forestière du Sud-est Cameroun. Au total, quatre recensements de la faune ont été réalisés entre 2003 et 2006 dans la partie active de l'UFA 10.030 allouée à la société PALLISCO. La zone étudiée couvre 176 km2 et englobe plusieurs parcelles annuelles d'abattage ainsi que des compartiments non exploités. La diversité des réponses spécifiques vis-à-vis de l'introduction d'activités humaines dans l'habitat est à l'échelle de la diversité biologique de l'habitat lui-même. Une attention particulière a été portée sur deux espèces emblématiques des forêts camerounaises, les gorilles des plaines occidentales G.g. gorilla et les chimpanzés communs Pan t. troglodytes. Durant ce travail, nous avons étudié 1) comment l'exploitation forestière à l'échelle industrielle affecte la distribution spatiale de neuf espèces de mammifères, dont les grands singes, dans les massifs de forêt de production du Sud-est Cameroun, et 2) de quelle nature sont les pressions exercées sur les populations animales au sein d'une concession forestière active (anthropique, écologique, éthologique, etc.). Nos premiers résultats indiquent que l'extraction d'essences précieuses dans les forêts camerounaises génère notamment une réorganisation de la distribution spatiale des gorilles et des chimpanzés, induisant des modifications locales de densité de population. Cette réorganisation spatiale semble être due aux activités humaines elles-mêmes plutôt qu'aux modifications de la structure de l'habitat ou à une diminution de la disponibilité de certaines ressources alimentaires importantes pour ces espèces. Comparés à d'autres mammifères, les grands singes se placent aux deux extrêmes d'un gradient de sensibilité aux perturbations de l'habitat causés par l'exploitation forestière. Les gorilles, ainsi que d'autres espèces "généralistes" comme les céphalophes, semblent prospérer dans les forêts exploitées, probablement attirés dans ces zones par la secondarisation de la végétation. Leurs densités diminuent ponctuellement dans les parcelles d'abattage pendant les opérations d'extraction, mais retrouvent très vite leur niveau initial. Ceci suggère un effet répulsif de la présence humaine sur ces espèces plutôt qu'une altération majeure de la qualité de l'habitat pour ces dernières. D'autres espèces plus "spécialistes" semblent réagir en augmentant la taille de leurs aires de fourragement. Il s'agit des sitatungas Tragelpahus spekei et des potamochères Potamochoerus porcus, deux espèces appréciant les biotopes humides (marécages à Raphia spp., des zones de forêt inondées, etc.). Ces biotopes particuliers, non-affectés par l'exploitation forestière, au coeur des forêts de production semblent servir de refuge pour ces espèces. Enfin, deux espèces ont été identifiées comme étant explicitement très vulnérables aux activités d'exploitation: les chimpanzés et les éléphants des forêts Loxodonta africana cyclotis. Leurs abondances n'ont pas recouvré les valeurs originelles durant la période d'étude, indiquant que ces espèces subissent encore des pressions écologiques et/ou anthropiques jusqu'à quatre ans après la fin des activités d'exploitation forestière. Afin de contraster les facteurs écologiques et/ou anthropiques régissant la distribution spatiale des gorilles et des chimpanzés, nous avons fait usage d'une technique de modélisation spatiale appelée "Ecological Niche Factor Analysis – ENFA". Les modèles ENFA pour ces deux espèces ont principalement retenu les variables anthropiques pour expliquer la distribution spatiale des grands singes dans l'aire d'étude. Il a ainsi été démontré que la répartition des gorilles était en grande partie expliquée par l'agencement local des AACs et le temps qui s'est écoulé depuis la fin des opérations d'extraction dans celles-ci. De manière générale, cette espèce évite les zones présentant un haut taux de fréquentation humaine et préfère les forêts exploitées quelques années auparavant. Quant aux chimpanzés, leur distribution spatiale est principalement expliquée par la présence de routes et pistes forestières qui sont amplement évitées. La périphérie des zones exploitées semble être une zone de convergence pour les chimpanzés qui y seraient vraisemblablement refoulés lors des perturbations, mais ces mouvements seraient limités à de courtes distances. La vulnérabilité des chimpanzés s'expliquerait dès lors par l'absence de mécanismes démographiques leur permettant d'éviter les zones affectées tout en réduisant les conflits territoriaux résultant d'une réorganisation spatiale. La tendance globale des variations d'abondance des grands singes au sein d'une concession forestière en cours d'exploitation confirme que même des espèces très proches phylogénétiquement peuvent faire preuve de capacités différentes de survie face aux perturbations anthropiques. Il ressort de nos observations que les communautés de chimpanzés font preuve d'une certaine inertie spatiale, contrairement aux gorilles qui parviennent à éviter les activités humaines. Cette inertie serait probablement à l'origine de sa vulnérabilité face aux pratiques forestières actuelles. Nos résultats viennent confirmer l'hypothèse socio-écologique émise par White & Tutin (2001). Face à ce malheureux constat, il est impératif de mettre en place des mesures concrètes de gestion visant à maintenir les populations de chimpanzés dans les forêts de production camerounaises. Pratiquement, l'exploitation sélective serait compatible avec la conservation de la plupart des mammifères si certaines mesures de gestion visant à diminuer les impacts négatifs étaient rapidement mises en application. La proximité entre les zones exploitées et les zones pouvant servir de refuge semble être un facteur déterminant de la survie de nombreuses espèces de mammifères dans les forêts de production du Cameroun. Une ligne de réflexion serait donc d'assurer les mouvements de populations vers ces zones-refuge sans heurts afin de garantir l'émigration des populations animales en dehors des zones affectées et la recolonisation ultérieure des forêts exploitées. En ce sens, notre principale recommandation consiste à promouvoir un découpage en assiettes de coupe en bandes relativement étroites (<2,5 km) de façon à réduire la distance à parcourir pour éviter géographiquement les perturbations anthropiques. De même, il serait nécessaire de mettre en place des programmes de suivi régulier des abondances faunistiques afin de permettre une gestion adaptative qui s'ajusterait au vu d'événements critiques pour la faune.

Impacts of land-use conversion in Sumatra, Indonesia on soil nitrogen cycling, soil nutrient stocks and ecosystem dynamics

Innerhalb der letzten zwei Jahrzehnte ist die Entwaldungsrate auf Sumatra, Indonesien stark gestiegen, dies geht einher mit eine Umwandlung von Tieflandwäldern in Ölpalm- (Elaeis guineensis) und Kautschukmonokulturplantagen (Hevea brasiliensis). Es wurde festgestellt, dass Landnutzungsänderungen in landwirtschaftlichen Systemen die Bodennährstoffbestände sowie die Umsatzrate von Bodennährstoffen senkt, dies kann zu einer Abhängigkeit vom Einsetzen von Düngemitteln führen, die nur eine zeitweise Verfügbarkeit von Nährstoffen gewährleistet. Des Weiteren bedroht die Umwandlung von Wald in Monokulturen die hohe Biodiversität, welche in tropischen Wäldern vorherrscht, was wiederum die Funktionsweise des Ökosystems beeinflusst. Der Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit lag darin, die Auswirkungen der Landnutzungsänderung auf Bodennährstoffhaushalt und Ökosystemdynamiken festzustellen, sowie die Mechanismen die für die Veränderungen verantwortlich sind zu verstehen. Alle Drei Studien waren Teil eines großen interdisziplinären Projekts welches die ökologischen und sozialen Effekte von tropischen Landnutzungsveränderungen untersucht. Die Probenentnahme für jede Studie erfolgte in der Region von Jambi auf Sumatra, Indonesien – ein Gebiet das früher dicht bewaldet war, aber eine starke Entwaldung erfahren hat. Es wurden zwei Landschaften ausgesucht, die sich über ihre vorherrschende Bodentextur und ihren Bodentyp definieren und die Region natürlich repräsentieren: zum einen waren dies lehmige Acrisole und zum anderem tonige Acrisole. In den beiden Bodenlandschaften wurden vier Systeme untersucht: Tieflandregenwald und regenerierter Wald durchsetz mit Kautschukbäumen (hier benannt als „Jungle-rubber“) sowie Monokulturen von Kautschuk (Sein bis 17 Jahre alt) und Ölpalmen (Neun bis 16 Jahre alt). Das Ziel der ersten Studie war zu bewerten, wie sich die Umsatzrate von Stickstoff (N) im Boden in Bezug auf die Umwandlung von Wald in Kautschuk- und Ölpalmplantagen verändert. Die Bruttoumsatzrate von Stickstoff im Boden wurde mit der 15N-Verdünnungsmethode mit in situ Inkubation der Bodenbohrkerne bestimmt. In den Lehm-Acrisolen, in denen die Bodenfruchtbarkeit gering war, waren auch die mikrobielle Biomasse, die Bruttostickstoffmineralisation und die Immobilisierung von Ammonium (NH4+) gering und es wurden keine signifikanten Veränderungen durch die Landnutzung aufgezeigt. Die Ton-Acrisole welche eine höhere Ausgangsfruchtbarkeit, bezogen auf die Referenzflächen, aufwiesen, waren auch einen höheren Anteil an mikrobielle Biomassen sowie durch höhere NH4+-Umwandlungsraten im Vergleich zu den Lehm-Acrisolen gekennzeichnet. In den Ton-Acrisolen hat die Umwandlung von Wald und Jungle-rubber in Kautschuk- und Ölpalmplantagen zu einer Verringerung der Bodenfruchtbarkeit geführt, was wiederum zu einer Reduzierung der mikrobiellen Biomasse und der NH4+-Umwandlungsraten beigetragen hat. Unsere Ergebnisse lassen annehmen, das je höher die Ausgangsbodenfruchtbarkeit und Stickstoffverfügbarkeit im Boden ist, desto höher ist die Reduktionen durch die Landnutzungsänderungen. Das Ziel der zweiten Studie war es, Veränderungen biochemischer Charakteristika des Bodens sowie des Nährstoffbestandes bis 2 m Bodentiefe in den verschiedenen Landnutzungssystemen zu erfassen und die Proportionen der Gesamtvarianz der biochemischer Bodencharakteristika zu bestimmen, die durch die räumlichen Komponenten in unserem experimentellem Design hervorgerufen werden. Der Tongehalb beeinflusst die Bodenfruchtbarkeit und die größeren Nährstoffbestände wurden in den Referenzflächen der Ton-Acrisolen gefunden. Bewirtschaftungspraktiken in den veränderten Landnutzungssystemen übten den größten Einfluss auf Boden-pH, Basensättigung, extrahierbaren Phosphor und austauschbares Natrium aus. Die Mehrheit der biochemischen Bodencharakteristika und der Nährstoffbestände wurden nicht signifikant durch Landnutzungsänderungen verändert. Basierend auf der Varianzkomponentenanalyse der verschachtelten räumlichen Struktur des experimentellen Designs, wurde die Gesamtvarianz von vielen biochemischen Bodencharakteristika durch die Abweichungen zwischen replizierten Plots und nicht durch die unterschiedliche Landnutzung erklärt. Dieses Ergebnis deutet darauf hin, dass wenn man signifikante Effekte von Landnutzungsänderungen auf biochemische Bodencharakteristika feststellen will, die Stichprobenzahl replizierter Plots pro Landnutzungssystem erhöht werden muss. Das Ziel der dritten Studie war es, zwischen direkten Landnutzungseffekten und indirekten „Bottom-up“-Effekten auf ober- und unterirdisch lebende Taxa zu differenzieren. Es wurden allgemeine „Multilevel path“- Modelle (eine Form von Strukturgleichungsmodellen), die eine Berechnung direkter und interaktiver Effekte von Landnutzung mit abiotischen Variablen und „Bottom-up“-Effekten zwischen biotischen Variablen zulassen, auf der Basis von Daten von Pflanzen, Mikroorganismen, Invertebraten der Streuschicht, baumbewohnende Ameisen, Vögeln und Umweltparametern (Boden- und Mikroklimaeigenschaften) entworfen. Die Ergebnisse der „Multilevel path“- Modelle zeigen, dass die Landnutzungsänderungen direkte Effekte auf Pflanzen, unterirdisch lebende Taxa einer niedrigen trophischen Ebene (z.B. Saprobionten und Herbivoren) und baumbewohnende Ameisen haben, fast alle Landnutzungsauswirkungen auf höhere trophische Ebenen von Invertebraten und Vögel waren jedoch „Bottom-up“-kontrolliert. Diese Studie lässt erkennen, dass Landnutzungsveränderungen, direkt und indirekt, ökologische Verschiebungen im großen Rahmen lenken. Die gefundenen Effekte auf höhere trophische Ebenen sind jedoch meistens von den Organismen der darunterliegenden trophischen Ebenen abhängig. Die Stickstoffumsatzraten im Boden und der Umfang der Stickstoffpools, welche in der ersten Studie gemessen wurden, wurden parallel mit Studien zur Stickstoffoxidemission und Stickstoffauswaschung des Bodens durchgeführt, um ein ganzheitliches Bild des Stickstoffhaushaltes in den veränderten Landschaft zu erhalten. Analysen zur Probenoptimierung wurden für die biochemischen Bodencharakteristika der oberen Bodenschicht bis 0,5 m aus der zweiten Studie durchgeführt, um festzustellen was die minimale Anzahl an Replikaten pro Landnutzungstyp ist, um signifikante Unterschiede zwischen den Landnutzungssystemen in unserem experimentellen Design festzustellen. Die Bodenkomponenten die in die „Multilevel path“- Modelle integriert waren, wurden erfasst und direkte Zusammenhänge zwischen diesen Bodeneigenschaften und der Biodiversität des Ökosystems und den Biomassen wurden untersucht, um ein besseres Verständnis davon zu bekommen, welche Rolle Bodennährstoffbeständen für die transformierten Systeme spielen. Insgesamt zeigen die Ergebnisse der drei Studien, dass die Bodennährstoffbestände eine wichtige Komponente des Ökosystems darstellt und Veränderungen der Bodennährstoffbestände durch Landnutzungsänderungen Auswirkungen auf die Biodiversität und die Funktionsweise des Ökosystems haben können.
