Vliv povrchových rýh na přechod ke smíšenému mazání / The effect of surface grooves on transition to mixed lubrication

The purpose of this diploma thesis is to describe the influence of artificially produced surface grooves on transition from full EHL regime to mixed lubrication in point contact using optical interferometry. This article focuses on influences of grooves orientation, length in contact area, elastic properties of contact surfaces and different types of oil defined by pressure-viscosity coefficient. Empirical prediction model of groove influence on film thickness was established based on experimental data. The groove influence was incorporated into lubrication parameter. This modified definition was compared to classic one. It showed that avoiding groove influence in classic definition lead to significant underestimation. Influence of groove on friction coefficient is also studied.

Náplní této disertační práce je popis komplexní a obecně použitelné strategie výpočetního modelování chování kluzných ložisek, pracujících v režimu smíšeného mazání a uvažujících reálné struktury drsných povrchů obou členů kluzných ložisek – ložiskových pánví a ložiskových čepů. V práci jsou uvedeny a detailně popsány způsoby získání charakteristických popisných dat těchto drsných povrchů a její nedílnou součástí je i popis numerických algoritmů, sloužících k následnému zpracování těchto dat. Dále jsou zde rozebrány implementované výpočetní přístupy k modelování kontaktního tlaku. Ovlivnění hydrodynamické mazací vrstvy kluzných ložisek je dáno velikostí a průběhem faktorů toku, jejichž numerické stanovování je zde detailně popsáno. Alternativní stanovení faktorů toku pomocí analytických funkcí je zde pro úplnost rovněž obsaženo. V závěru práce je uveden popis numerického řešiče modelování chování kluzných ložisek spolu s uvedenými výsledky provedených simulací a jejich diskuzí. Ověření jednotlivých výpočetních modelů, popřípadě porovnání výsledků s výsledky získanými alternativním způsobem, je uvedeno v příslušných kapitolách.

Performance study and modelling of an integrated pump and gas-liquid separator system: Optimisation for aero-engine lubrication systems

A system able to simultaneously separate and pump a gas-liquid mixture was developed.<p>It works efficiently and can be used in many applications (nuclear power plants,<p>pulp and paper processing, petroleum extraction, etc.). However, this pump and separator<p>system (PASS) was especially designed to handle air-oil mixture generated in<p>aero-engine lubrication systems. The PASS combines three important functions of the<p>scavenge part of the lubrication system: the deaeration and deoiling of the air-oil mixture<p>generated in the bearing and gearbox sumps and the pumping of the oil towards<p>the tank. These are critical functions for the engine. Indeed, a poor deoiling efficiency<p>leads to a high oil consumption. This reduces the flight endurance, increases the size<p>and weight of the oil tank and has a negative impact on the environment. Poor deaeration<p>and pumping characteristics lead to problems in the cooling and the lubrication of<p>the engine bearings.<p><p>Integrating a PASS into the lubrication system allows considerable improvements<p>(and simplification) to the lubrication system architecture. An important number of<p>components are suppressed: the vent lines, the deoiler, the cyclone deaerator and the<p>scavenge pumps. This reduces the size and the weight of the lubrication system and<p>increases its reliability. Furthermore, an important part of this PhD thesis focuses on<p>reducing the oil consumption in the PASS. This improves the flight endurance, reduces<p>engine maintenance and working costs and is profitable to the environment.<p><p>In addition to the development of an advanced PASS design system, the objective of<p>this thesis was to obtain a good understanding of the separation processes occurring in<p>the PASS and to develop theoretical models able to predict the separation performance<p>for every working condition encountered in a typical aircraft flight. To achieve this<p>goal, three main tasks were performed: the development of different two-phase measurement<p>systems, the experimental tests of four different PASS architectures and the<p>theoretical development (after an extensive literature review) of correlations predicting<p>the performance of the PASS in function of the working conditions. Five specific aspects<p>of the PASS were studied: the inlet flow, the deoiling efficiency, the deaeration efficiency,<p>the pumping efficiency and the pressure drop. Finally, the models that have been developed<p>with the help of the measurement systems and of the experiments have been<p>integrated in a complete model of the lubrication system (under the EcosimPro modelling<p>environment). This helps to predict real in flight PASS working conditions and<p>performance. Polymers in Aqueous Lubrication

The main objective of this thesis work was to gain understanding of the layer properties and polymer structures that were able to aid lubrication in aqueous media. To this end, three types of polyelectrolytes: a diblock copolymer, a train-of-brushes and two brush-with-anchor mucins have been utilized. Their lubrication ability in the boundary lubrication regime has been examined by Atomic Force Microscopy with colloidal probe. The interfacial behavior of the thermoresponsive diblock copolymer, PIPOZ60-b-PAMPTAM17,on silica was studied in the temperature interval 25-50 ˚C. The main finding is that adsorption hysteresis, due to the presence of trapped states, is important when the adsorbed layers are in contact with a dilute polymer solution. The importance of trapped states was also demonstrated in the measured friction forces, where significantly lower friction forces, at a given temperature, were encountered on cooling than on the preceding heating stage, which was attributed to increased adsorbed amount. On the heating stage the friction force decreased with increasing temperature despite the worsening of the solvent condition, and the opposite trend was observed when using pre-adsorbed layers (constant adsorbed amount) as a consequence of increased segment-segment attraction. The second part of the studies was devoted to the interfacial properties of mucins on PMMA. The strong affinity provided by the anchoring group of C-PSLex and C-P55 together with their more extended layer structure contribute to the superior lubrication of PMMA compared to BSM up to pressures of 8-9 MPa. This is a result of minor bridging and lateral motion of molecules along the surface during shearing. We further studied the influence of glycosylation on interfacial properties of mucin by utilizing the highly purified mucins, C-P55 and C-PSLex. Our data suggest that the longer and more branched carbohydrate side chains on C-PSLex provide lower interpenetration and better hydration lubrication at low loads compared to the shorter carbohydrate chains on C-P55. However, the longer carbohydrates appear to counteract disentanglement less efficiently, giving rise to a higher friction force at high loads. / <p>QC 20170407</p>

Målet med detta arbete är att undersöka smörjsystemet på två utsatta leder på en Boomer E2C. Förfrågan om examensarbetet kommer från Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB i Örebro som också tillverkar maskinen. Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB har idag ett fettsmörjningssystem som upprätthåller funktionerna på lederna. Uppgiften är att sammanfatta och utvärdera dagens system samt att finna nya lösningsförslag som skulle kunna ersätta eller delvis ersätta systemet. Information har hämtats från dokumentation, ritningar och samtal med konstruktörer på företaget. Efter att alla förutsättningarna för lederna specificerats så har lösningsförslag sökts. Genom att träffa lagerleverantörer och söka artiklar så har idéer formats. Brainstorming har använts för att kunna se nya lösningar. Undersökningen har visat att det finns problem med dagens lösning vad gäller slanghaverier och driftstopp i fält. Atlas Copco AB uttrycker även att kunskapen och dokumentationen angående systemet är otillräckligt. Efter artikelsökning så kan konstateras att forskningen och kunskapen på området med tungt belastade, oscillerande och fettsmörjda leder är liten. Dimensionering sker ofta med hjälp av erfarenhet och med tankesättet ”det har fungerat förut”. När lösningsförslagen har jämförts så har detta gjorts genom att använda metoden AHP (Analytic Hierachy Process). Med denna metod så jämför man kriterierna från kravspecifikationen med lösningsförslag så att man matematiskt kan räkna fram ett vinnande lösningsförslag. Resultatet visar att en smörjfri lösning skulle teoretiskt vara att föredra. Denna skulle tillverkas av en modern polymer och kompletteras med en inre tätning och ett yttre skydd. Atlas Copco rekommenderas att testa de olika förslagen för att komma fram till vilken som är bäst lämpad för applikationen. / The goal of this work is to investigate the lubrication system on two exposed joints on a Boomer E2C. The request for the thesis comes from Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB, Örebro, which also manufactures the machine. Today Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB has a grease lubrication system that secures the function of the joints. The task is to summarize and evaluate the current systems and to find new solutions that would be able to replace or partially replace the current system. Information was gathered from documents, construction drawings and conversations with engineers at the company. Solutions and ideas have been formed by meeting stock suppliers and searching for articles. Brainstorming has been used in order to find new solutions. The investigation has shown that there are problems with the current solution in terms of hose failures and downtime in the field. Atlas Copco AB also expresses that there is a lack of documentation and knowledge regarding the lubrication system. After the various article searches it became clear that research and knowledge in the area with heavy duty, oscillating and grease lubricated joints is insufficient. The design is often done with the help of experience and with the mindset "it has worked before." When the solutions and ideas have been compared, this has been done by using AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process). This method compares the criteria that must be fulfilled by the solutions and then calculates the best one. The results show that a lubrication-free solution would theoretically be preferable. This would be produced by a modern polymer and supplemented with an inner seal and an outer protection. Atlas Copco is recommended to test the various proposals to be able to decide which the best solution for the application is.

Lubrication mechanisms and their influence on interface strength during installation of subsurface pipes

Pipe jacking, has seen a rise in popularity, particularly in urban areas where infrastructure does not permit cut-and-cover methods. As pipe jacking has becomes more commonplace, engineers are pushing the limits of the technology more and more by designing longer drives in more difficult ground conditions. Lubrication is essential to reduce the frictional resistance generated at the pipe-soil interface. Even though lubrication is widely utilized, there is not a clear understanding of the conditions required to obtain the full benefit of lubrication. This dissertation focuses on bentonite slurry characteristics and interface behavior under different lubricating conditions with the goal to further the understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the large friction reductions observed in the field. An interface shear device capable of measuring interface behavior on pipe surfaces was used to perform tests under two lubricating conditions. Pipes were sheared against a mixture of sand and slurry and the effect of the slurry was quantified. In another series of tests, slurry was injected at the pipe-soil interface. An axisymmetric interface shear device was developed to further investigate the lubrication mechanism associated with injection of slurry into sand. The device was designed to inject slurry through injection ports built into a shaft displaced within a sealed sand-filled chamber. A series of tests were performed on dry sand as well as sand where water or slurry was injected during shearing. The effect of sand type and viscosity are also investigated. Findings from the experimental studies are related back to full-scale behavior with the objective of assessing the lubrication methods and their effectiveness. A rational procedure for predicting non-lubricated and lubricated jacking forces is proposed to optimize design and serve as a framework for evaluating jacking forces in the field.

Structural and tribological analysis of harvester crane joint

Grease-lubricated journal bearings are widely used in heavy duty applications, such as construction equipment, agriculture- and forest machines. The main purpose of the grease-lubricated journal bearing is solely to create sustainable rotation of a given application. However, purpose seldom decides complexity of journal bearing design. Depending on application, parameters such as Load , Material  and Lubrication immensely increase complexity of the design. Tribology is a highly interdisciplinary subject, which requires knowledge concerning physics, chemistry, metallurgy and solid mechanics. Tribological aspects of a design are frequently regarded as irrelevant. Tribological issues are commonly enlightened in combination with structural design weaknesses. The main aim of the thesis was to analyze two cylinder joints found in a Komatsu Forest 951 crane and establish root cause to the structural and tribological issues. Outline of the approach was divided into three main targets: 1. Investigate mechanical and tribological aspects of the crane design. 2. Understand how these aspects influence the life time of the bearings. 3. Summarize the analysis and suggest improvements based on the discovery. Fundamental structural and tribological design guidelines regarding grease-lubricated journal bearings have been presented in this thesis. Damaged components such as cylinders, pins and journal bearings have been examined at Komatsu Forest’s factory in Umeå. Further, a scanning electron microscopy study has been done at Luleå University of Technology, to determine predominant wear mechanisms in the harvester crane joints. A non-linear finite element model of the crane has been designed to represent pressure distribution in the contact between bearing and pin. The finite element analysis gives a good approximation of the contact but leaves room for further refinements. Temperatures, in the contacts, have not been identified and will be measured outside the time frame of the master’s thesis. Design changes, with respect to discovered structural and tribological issues have been suggested. The suggested improvements can potentially increase the life time of lift cylinders, pins and journal bearings.

Lubrification des contacts sous-alimentés : apport de la micro-texturation de surface

L’appauvrissement en lubrifiant d’un contact élasto-hydrodynamique peut menacer la pérennité du film interfacial séparant les surfaces, entraîner l’augmentation des forces de frottement et l’endommagement rapide du tribosystème. Industriellement, la volonté de réduire les quantités de lubrifiant embarquées et de limiter les opérations de maintenance favorisent la sous-alimentation. L’objectif de cette thèse est de contrôler l’alimentation d’un contact EHD sous-alimenté par une texturation de surface multi-échelle, afin d’assurer une lubrification minimale à l’interface. Une démarche scientifique s’appuyant sur la dissociation des échelles spatiales, temporelles ainsi que sur l’analyse des contributions des écoulements dans les différentes zones du contact a été mise en oeuvre. La compréhension de l’interaction laser/matière en irradiation ultra-brève a permis de générer des texturations nanométriques (ripples) et micrométriques (ondulations et réseaux de cavités) à l’aide d’un laser femtoseconde. La contribution de chaque échelle topographique sur la lubrification d’un contact a été étudiée. Lorsque les forces hydrodynamiques sont faibles (contact statique), l’alimentation d’un contact résulte d’une compétition entre une contribution capillaire et une contribution visqueuse. La macro géométrie des solides déformés ainsi que la viscosité pilotent au premier ordre la propagation du lubrifiant à l’extérieur de la zone haute pression. L’imbibition de la zone de Hertz n’est possible qu’avec l’introduction d’une surface nanotexturée et sa cinétique dépend de l’orientation et de l’amplitude des ripples. Pour des nombres capillaires élevés (contact dynamique), un critère de prédiction de l’apparition de la sous-alimentation a été établi. En présence de réseaux de cavités et sous l’action d’un cisaillement interfacial, les surfaces texturées possédant une capacité de rétention élevée réalimentent la zone de haute pression. Le volume piégé envahit alors le contact puis crée une surépaisseur de lubrifiant qui protège les solides de l’endommagement tout en limitant l’augmentation du frottement. Les texturations nanométriques (ripples) et micrométriques, anisotropes et périodiques, modifient l’équilibre entre les débits de réalimentation et les débits de fuite. Une orientation adaptée des motifs peut contenir le drainage du lubrifiant dans le contact et ainsi empêcher ou retarder l’apparition d’un régime de sous-alimentation totale. Au final, chaque échelle topographique contribue à la réalimentation d’un contact sousalimenté, soit en favorisant l’expansion des réservoirs latéraux, soit en apportant localement du lubrifiant, ou en maintenant un film fluide résiduel sur les surfaces. / The lubricant depletion of an elasto-hydrodynamic contact may threaten the sustainability of the interfacial film separating the surfaces, can result in the increase of frictional forces and a rapid damage of the tribosystem. Industrially, the trend to reduce the amount of initial lubricant and to limit maintenance promotes starvation of the lubricated contact. The aim of this work is to control the lubricant feeding of a starved EHL contact by a multi-scale surface texturing, in order to ensure minimal lubrication at the interface. A scientific approach based on the separation of spatial and temporal scales, as well as the analysis of the flow contributions in different zones of the contact has been implemented.The understanding of the laser/matter interaction in ultra-short irradation has helped us to generate both nanoscale texturing (ripples) and microscale texturing such as microwaves and networks of micrometric cavities, using a femtosecond laser. The contribution of each topographic scale on the contact lubrication has been analysed. When the hydrodynamic forces are low (static contact), the feeding of the contact results from a competition between capillary and viscous contributions. The macro geometry of the deformed solids and the lubricant viscosity mainly control the lubricant spread around the high-pressure zone. The imbibition of the Hertz contact area is only possible with the introduction of a nanotextured surface. The imbibition kinetics depends on the orientation and amplitude of the ripples. For high capillary numbers (dynamic contact), a criterion has been established in order to predict the occurrence of starvation. Using a network of micro cavities and the action of an interfacial shear, the high retention capacity textured surfaces brings lubricant to the high-pressure zone. The trapped volume propagates inside the contact and creates a film thickness that protects the solids from damages while limiting the increase in friction. Anisotropic and periodic nanoscale and microscale texturing, like ripples, influences the balance between re-feeding and leakage flow rates. A suitable orientation of the geometries may prevent the lubricant from drainage and thus delay the onset of a starved lubrication regime. In conclusion, each topographic scale contributes to re-feed a starved contact, by promoting lateral reservoir extension, by providing lubricant locally where it is needed, or maintaining a residual fluid film on surfaces.
