Acts 17: Paul Before the Areopagus

Luke's record of Paul in Athens is among the most interesting and widely studied topics in the life of the Apostle Paul. Luke recorded that Paul taught in the Athenian marketplace, where he was asked to present his doctrines before the Areopagus. Many have commented on the controversial aspects of Paul's speech before the council as recounted by Luke. Much of this scholarly commentary has been centered on the speech itself and the historical authenticity of the account. The purpose of this thesis is to reexamine the context and the setting of the speech as recorded by Luke in the biblical text. By reexamining the context of the speech, this thesis will help clarify Paul's purpose in engaging in philosophical dialogue with his audience while omitting the profound Christocentric doctrines as found in the Pauline Epistles. This thesis argues that an understanding of the setting and the audience played a pivotal role in the content of the Areopagus speech. Paul's audience was very different than the one he was writing to in his Epistles; therefore, the speech matches the setting and the audience. This thesis demonstrates the significance of the audience by examining Paul's education before his conversion to Christianity, whether Paul was taken before the Areopagus on trial, what the functions of the Areopagus were over its history, where Paul was taken to explain his doctrine, and what role the audience played in how and what Paul taught on that occasion.

To Hear and Perceive: Scriptural Interpretation and Community Self-Definition in Luke-Acts and the Writings of Justin Martyr

Throughout the Second Temple period (516 BCE-70 CE), the reading and interpretation of the Jewish scriptures shaped the national consciousness of the Jewish people. Within this setting, the Jesus movement emerged as a Jewish group which also laid claim to the Jewish scriptures as a means of articulating its identity even though, over time, the group came to be comprised primarily of non-Jews. How was it possible for a group of non-Jews to lay claim to the sacred texts of Jews and use these scriptures to define their own community? With the aim of exploring the answer to this question, my study compares and contrasts the way that the writings of the New Testament attributed to Luke, hereafter Luke-Acts, and the writings of the early Christian apologist Justin Martyr define the Christ-believing community by describing its privileged status in relation to the Jewish scriptures. This entails an examination of their respective representations of the Jewish scriptures and the exegesis of Christ-believers from two main vantage points: their portrayal of Christ-believers as authoritative interpreters of the Jewish scriptures (Part One) and their depiction of Christ-believers as heirs to the promises of scripture (Part Two). Although both authors similarly divide between insiders and outsiders to the Christ-believing community by arguing that Christ-believers alone possess an inspired capacity to interpret the Jewish scriptures, they do not describe insiders to their community in precisely the same way. Whereas Justin argues that Christ-believers have become the rightful recipients of the scriptural promises that God originally made to Jews, Luke envisages an ongoing role for the Jewish people as the recipients of the promises that God pledged to Israel. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

This essay examines Jesus' conflict counseling in the Gospel of Luke, by conducting a literary analysis of Luke 9:46-48, 12:13-21 and 22:24-30, which are stories of conflicts where Jesus himself is not involved. The texts have been analyzed in their historical context and are illuminated by heuristic use of contemporary conflict theory and moral psychology. Through this reading, a pattern emerges: Jesus' main method of dealing with conflicts is to correct the attitudes of those involved in conflict.

Luke's Narrative Agenda: The Use of Kyrios Within Luke-Acts To Proclaim The Identity Of Jesus

This dissertation examines Luke's use of kyrios within his narratives of the Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. Luke reached back into the common religious cultural context of the early Christians where he obtained his understanding of kyrios as Yahweh from the Greek Jewish Scriptures (Chapter 1). When Luke and his Jewish audience heard kyrios, they first understood it to mean Yahweh. Luke was also writing in the larger cultural context of the Greco-Roman world and the Roman Empire, which was pervasively informed by the imperial cult (Chapter 2). Luke and his Greco-Roman audience (including his Jewish audience) instinctively recognized that kyrios' most obvious Greco-Roman referent was the emperor. Based on these identities of kyrios, Luke used his Gospel as the narrative canvas on which to develop and progressively reveal the identity of Jesus as Yahweh because he is kyrios (Chapter 3). Luke then took this established identity and made an overt political claim that Jesus is superior to the emperor as a god because he is Lord of all (Chapter 4). Luke's narrative agenda not only embraced the Jewish roots from which Christianity was born, it also challenged the environment in which it would thrive and ultimately triumph. For Luke, the identity of Jesus was profoundly clear. Jesus was Yahweh, the Lord God of Israel, born a human being and as such he explicitly replaced Caesar as Lord of all. / Religion

Les chromogranines (Cgs) sont une famille de protéines acides exprimées dans les granules des cellules neuroendocrines et immunitaires. Plusieurs peptides dérivés des Cgs présentent des activités antimicrobiennes. L’objectif de ma thèse est d’évaluer l’interaction hôte-pathogène et ensuite de développer un polymère antimicrobien avec insertion du peptide antimicrobien cateslytin (CTL).Dans une première partie, nous avons évalué l’aptitude de la leukotoxine LukE/D à induire la sécrétion des neutrophiles et rôle des protéases bactériennes à dégrader les peptides dérivés de la CgA. Les neutrophiles activés sécrètent de nombreux composés que nous avons identifiés. De plus, la dégradation des PAMs dérivés de la CgA par les protéases de S.aureus a été déterminée. Sur tous les PAMs testés, CTL est le seul qui tue S.aureus et résister à dégradation. Par ailleurs, CgA et CgB sont dégradés par la protéase Glu-C pour produire de nouveaux fragments sans activité antibactérienne, mais d’activité antifongique.Dans une deuxième partie, nous avons décidé de préparer un revêtement conjugué à CTL. CTL-C est utilisé pour préparer des films avec le dépôt alterné de CHI et HA-CTL-C. Par la suite nous avons synthétisé HAFITC-CTL-C and HAFITC pour analyser leur interaction. HAFITC-CTL-C est rapidement détectable dans le cytoplasme sans provoquer la lyse cellulaire. De plus, les films contenant CTL-C ne sont pas toxiques pour les fibroblastes gingivaux humains.En conclusion, CTL est le seul peptide antimicrobien dérivé de la CgA qui peut tuer S.aureus et résiste à la dégradation protéolytique, ce qui est de bon augure pour de nouvelles études visant à développer des biomatériaux antimcrobiens. / Chromogranins (Cgs) are a family of acidic proteins, expressed in secretory granules of neuro-endocrine and immune cells. Several Cgs derived peptides express antimicrobial activity. Current study was aimed to evaluate host-pathogen interaction and ultimately to develop antimicrobial polymer with insertion of cateslytine (CTL).In first part, stimulatory ability of leukotoxin LukE/D to induce neutrophils secretions and role of bacterial proteases to degrade CgA-derived AMPs was evaluated. Activated neutrophils secrete various components which were identified. Later by using antimicrobial assays, several fractions were found active and later discussed with respect to proteomic analysis. Additionally, degradation of CgA derived AMPs by S. aureus proteases was demonstrated. Out of various AMPs tested, CTL was only that can kill S. aureus and resist protease degradation. Furthermore, CgA and CgB are processed by Glu-C protease to produce new fragments lacking antibacterial activity but presenting antifungal activity.Secondly, we aimed to prepare CTL conjugated biomaterial coating. CTL-C was used to prepare PEM films with alternative deposition of CHI and HA-CTL-C and evaluated for antimicrobial activities. Later on, we synthesized HAFITC-CTL-C and HAFITC to analyze their interaction. HAFITC-CTL-C was readily detectable in cytoplasm without provoking cell lysis. Moreover CTL-C inserted PEM films are non-toxic to human gingival fibroblast cells.In conclusion, CTL is the only CgA-derived AMP that can kill S. aureus and resistant to proteolytic degradation, which is a promising feature for further studies in order to develop antimicrobial biomaterials.

Development of luminescent bolometers and light detectors for neutrinoless double beta decay search / Développement de bolomètres luminescents et détecteurs de lumière pour la recherche de la double désintégration bêta sans émission de neutrinos

L'étude de la double désintégration bêta sans neutrinos joue un rôle important dans plusieurs questions en physique des particules et cosmologie. Ce processus nucléaire hypothétique viole la conservation du nombre leptonique par deux unités et jusqu'à présent il est le seule moyen pratique pour dévoiler la nature du neutrino : sa détection implique forcement que neutrino et antineutrino sont la même particule. En outre, le taux de décroissance est sensible à la masse efficace de Majorana du neutrino, du coup à l'échelle absolue des valeurs propres de la masse et leur hiérarchie. La marque expérimentale de la DDB0ν est un pic monochromatique dans le spectre énergétique de la somme des deux électrons émis. Le but des expériences de prochaine génération est une sensibilité sur la masse efficace du neutrino de l'ordre de dizaines de meV, c'est-à-dire demi-vies de l'ordre de 10²⁷-10²⁸ années : en pratique, il s'agit de construire des sources de quelques centaines de kg d'isotope candidat, au moins, et les sonder par des détecteurs très efficients, tout en gardant le bruit de fond dans la région énergétique d'intérêt au niveau d'un coup/tonne/an. Les bolomètres luminescents sont une technique prometteuse vu leur excellentes résolutions énergétiques, haute efficacité de détection, ample choix pour les matériaux et extensibilité modulaire à grande échelle; de plus, grâce à la détection simultanée de chaleur et lumière produites par l'interaction des particules, il est possible de discriminer les contaminations α, dangereuse source de bruit aux énergies d'intérêt pour plusieurs noyaux candidats à la DDB0ν. Cette thèse a été effectuée dans le contexte de l'expérience LUMINEU : une expérience pilote qui a pour but la construction d'une expérience de prochaine génération basée sur les bolomètres scintillants en molybdate de zinc, pour l'étude de l'isotope candidat ¹⁰⁰Mo. En vue de la construction d'une expérience à grande échelle, il est nécessaire d'effectuer des caractérisations systématiques pour s'assurer des performances et de la reproductibilité des détecteurs et leurs composantes. La disponibilité d'installations expérimentales en surface, facilement accessibles, est souhaitable pour des tests routiniers : j'ai mené la plupart des expériences au CSNSM, où j'ai aussi travaillé à l'installation d'un nouvel cryostat à dilution basé sur la technologie du Pulse-Tube. Une partie de ma thèse a concerné l'étude de détecteurs bolométriques de lumière aux absorbeurs en germanium et thermomètres NTD (thermistors Neutron Transmutation Doped) : une structure standard pour LUMINEU a été établie et on a mesuré les performances des bolomètres telles que sensibilité, résolution énergétique, bruit de base et reproductibilité. Les résultats sont satisfaisants en vue d'un emploi dans une expérience avec bolomètres scintillants, bien que la configuration soit très sensible à la microphonie. En outre, j'ai testé avec succès des détecteurs bolométriques de lumière exploitants l'effet Neganov-Luke, qui augmente le rapport signal-bruit au niveau compatible avec la détection de la lumière Cherenkov pour la discrimination des événements. Une autre partie a vu la caractérisation des bolomètres scintillants en molybdate de zinc avec masse allant jusqu'à environ 300 g : couplés aux capteurs de lumière susmentionnés et lus par thermistors NTD, ils ont été refroidis en surface au CSNSM et en endroit souterrain à Modane, dans l'installation de l'expérience EDELWEISS pour la Matière Noire. Grâce à la détection simultanée de lumière et chaleur, les interactions des particules β/γ sont séparées des contaminations α. Les résultats démontrent que la caractérisation de bolomètres massifs, presque la taille cible des détecteurs finaux, est possible même en surface, en dépit du rayonnement cosmique. En outre, ces tests ont permis d'optimiser la compatibilité de l'installation de Modane avec les exigences des bolomètres scintillants pour la recherche de la DDB0ν. / Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (0νDBD) is regarded as an important key in the decryption of some hot astroparticle and cosmological enigmas: it violates lepton number by two units and it is currently the only known practical way to shed light on the neutrino nature, being possible only in case of a Majorana neutrino, identical to its antiparticle. Moreover, the 0νDBD rate is sensitive to the effective neutrino mass, so it would be useful to define the absolute neutrino mass scale and hierarchy. The experimental footprint of 0νDBD is a monochromatic peak in the sum energy spectrum of the two emitted electrons. Next-generation experiments aim at reaching a sensitivity on the effective neutrino mass of the order of ten meV, corresponding to half lives in the range 10²⁷-10²⁸ years: this means to be able to gather, at least, a few hundred kilograms of 0νDBD candidate isotope source and to efficiently scrutinize it with very sensitive detectors. Meanwhile, background levels in the energy region of interest of the 0νDBD signal should be lowered to less than one count/ton/y. Cryogenic luminescent bolometers are a promising technique for 0νDBD search, as they feature excellent energy resolutions, high detection efficiency, flexibility in the material choice and easy scalability to large modular experiments; furthermore, the simultaneous read-out of heat and light signals produced by particle interactions provides an active discrimination method against the dangerous α contaminations, populating the 0νDBD energy region of several interesting candidate isotopes. The work presented in this dissertation was carried out in the context of the LUMINEU project: a pilot experiment focused on zinc molybdate scintillating bolometers, to define the strategies for the construction of a next-generation experiment based on the 0νDBD candidate ¹⁰⁰Mo. In view of the construction of a large 0νDBD experiment, involving hundreds of modules, systematic cryogenic measurements have to be performed to ensure good performance and reproducibility of the detectors and their components. Aboveground facilities are preferred for routinary tests because of their easier accessibility: most of the tests were carried out at CSNSM, where I also worked on the setup of a new cryogenic apparatus, based on the Pulse-Tube technology. One part of my thesis work saw the study of bolometric light detectors based on germanium absorbers and Neutron Transmutation Doped (NTD) thermometers: a proper design was developed in view of LUMINEU and the devices were characterized in terms of sensitivity, energy resolution, baseline noise and reproducibility. The results are compatible with a 0νDBD search final experiment, though this detector configuration is very sensitive to vibrational noise. In addition, the feasibility of bolometric light detectors based on NTD thermometers and Neganov-Luke amplification was investigated, demonstrating that this technique can actually boost the signal-to-noise gain to a level compatible with event discrimination based on Cherenkov light detection. Another part of my work dealt with the test of scintillating zinc molybdate bolometers of mass up to ~300 g, coupled to the aforementioned light detectors and operated both in the aboveground facilities at CSNSM and underground at Modane, in the cryostat of the EDELWEISS Dark Matter search experiment. Good event discrimination capability was achieved: thanks to double read-out of heat and light, it is possible to identify α particles, the threatening background for 0νDBD interests, against β/γ interactions. The results proved the possibility to pre-characterize aboveground detectors of mass close to the one of a final experiment module, despite the high cosmic rays rates. Besides, the measurements opened the way to the mutual compatibility of the underground setup, conceived for another kind of experiment, and LUMINEU 0νDBD search detectors.

Calibration d’un détecteur HVeV en utilisant des neutrons de 56 keV

L'un des grands mystères de la physique qu'il nous reste à élucider est d'identifier de quoi est composée la matière sombre. L'expérience SuperCDMS a décidé de se pencher sur la question il y a plus de 20 ans. Nous utilisons des détecteurs semi-conducteurs qui mesurent le signal de phonons engendré par des événements de recul.Nous mesurons également l'énergie déposée sous forme de d'ionisation à l'aide de l'effet Neganov-Trofimov-Luke (NTL) qui produit des phonons d'énergie totale proportionnelle à l'énergie d'ionisation initiale. Pour ce faire, nous appliquons un voltage sur le détecteur qui amplifie également le signal par un facteur proportionnel au voltage appliqué. Nous sommes allés à TUNL en Caroline du Nord, afin de calibrer notre détecteur HVeV fait d'un cristal de silicium. Le but de cette calibration est de déterminer le taux d'ionisation produit par des reculs nucléaires produits par le faisceau de neutrons fourni par TUNL. Cette mesure est importante puisque le taux d'ionisation est atténué pour le recul nucléaire par rapport au recul électronique et qu'il détermine l'amplification du signal par l'effet NTL. Nous avons utilisé des scintillateurs liquides couplés à des PMTs afin de déterminer l'énergie déposée dans le HVeV en les positionnant à des angles de diffusion précis. Nous avons jusqu'ici uniquement effectué l'analyse des données pour lesquelles il n'y a pas d'amplification NTL. Par conséquant, nous ne pouvons pas encore déterminer le taux d'ionisation. Cependant, nous concluons que notre méthode d'analyse est valide et que l'énergie déposée dans le HVeV est bien celle qui correspond aux angles de diffusion auxquels nous avions placé nos PMTs. / One of the biggest mysteries left to be solved in physics is the question of what dark matter is made of. The SuperCDMS experiment decided to explore this question and has done so for the last 20 years. We use semiconducting detectors that measure phonon signals generated by recoils. The HVeV detectors also use the Neganov-Trofimov-Luke (NTL) effect to generate a phonon signal proportional to the ionization signal that is also produced by the recoil. To do so, we apply a voltage bias the HVeV detector, which also amplify the signal by a factor proportional to the bias. We went to TUNL in North Carolina to calibrate our HVeV detector, made of a silicon crystal. The goal of the experiment is to determine the ionization yield of the nuclear recoil produced by the neutron beam provided to us by TUNL. This measurement is important since the ionization yield is dampened for nuclear recoil compared to electronic recoil and is linked to the gain of the signal in the HVeV. We use liquid scintillators coupled to PMTs to determine the energy deposited in the HVeV using the scattering angle between the HVeV and the chosen position of the PMTs. At this point, we only have the analyses for the data with no NTL gain, meaning that we do not yet have a measure for the ionization yield. Still, this analysis allowed us to validate our analysis method and the energy deposited in the HVeV for coincident events with PMTs of different position.

The National Gallery in Prague conserves an important masterpiece of the Fle- mish mannerist Jan Gossaert. The panel painting Saint Luke painting the Virgin was originally determined for the cathedral of Saint Roumboult in Mechelen in Belgium. The artwork represents one of the first applications of Renaissance style behind the Alps. Gossaert was educated in this new style during a visit to Italy several years earlier and combined it with traditional Flemish art. The artist worked for the court of Margaret of Austria in Mechelen around the year 1513, the year the painting originates. His traditional style became influenced by the techniques used in Mechelen by foreign artists. The theme is painted the tradi- tional manner of work on an oak panel. Renaissance and Gothic architecture is decorated by " en grisaille" sculptures. A seemingly simple theme is given deeper meaning thanks to these objects containing hidden meanings. There are also some prints from the time the panel was in the Saint Vitus Cathedral in Prague due to which we can contemplate the progress in presentation of the painting during centuries. 1
