The Historic Avant-Garde, the Neo-Avant-Garde and the Digital Age: Experimental Visual-Textual Forms in the Luso-Hispanic World

Ledesma, Eduardo January 2012 (has links)
My dissertation examines the experimental poetry of three periods, the historical avant-garde of the 1920s, the neo-avant-gardes of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, and the digital avant-garde (from the 1990s until the present), drawing on the works of poets from the Luso-Hispanic world including the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America. Scholars such as Renato Poggioli and Peter Bürger define the avant-garde as radically new and unrepeatable, an "advanced" guard that exhausted its aesthetic and political possibilities. I challenge this view by establishing a continuity of avant-gardes that emerge during periods of technological innovation and cultural exchange, introducing new artistic modalities, engaging with emerging media and re-purposing the strategies of past avant-gardes to their own historical conditions. Experimental poetic practices such as visual, kinetic, phonetic, concrete, video poetry, and poetic performance have unfolded over time and across national boundaries in response to global, social, and technological forces. My focus is on poetry broadly understood as works that "experiment" with the interplay between the visual, the sonorous and the verbal, questioning both genre and medium specificity, and contesting traditional discipline-bound tools of analysis. In order to critically approach poems that are often not printed on a page, and depend on more than verbal communication, I draw on disciplines such as literary analysis--including close-readings--media theory, and film analysis, and deploy theories of metaphor, embodiment and affect to interpret works that focus on the materiality of language through typographic experiments, script animation, and performance. The selection includes poems by authors from the 1920s such as Josep M. Junoy, Joan Salvat-Papasseit, José Juan Tablada, Guilherme de Almeida; neo-avant-garde visual and concrete poets from the 1960s such as Joan Brossa, Julio Campal, Edgardo Vigo, and Décio Pignatari; and their contemporary counterparts working with digital media such as Ana María Uribe, Olga Delgado, María Mencía, Arnaldo Antunes, and Eduardo Kac. Examining digital poetry in the light of older poetic practices, I compare and contrast how artists have queried the status of literature as a purely script-based art, considering how notions of experimental literature have changed through time (diachronically), but also isolate each period (synchronically). / Romance Languages and Literatures

Jahn, Lívia Petry January 2015 (has links)
This thesis aims to bring to the Academic world, a new and popular knowledge which main characteristics are the anonymous aspects of its feature and also its folkloric way of existence. This new knowledge is represented by the Christmas Chants brought to Brazil by the Azoreans (Portugal) and which remains in the Brazilian tradition and folklore, especially in the city of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. The author tried to do an exegesis of such Christmas Chants, through the following theories and notions: folklore (Cascudo), Popular Culture (Burke), performance (Schechner, Zumthor), myths (Kerényi, Campbell), archetypes (Jung), religious feasts (Bakhtin, Perez), poetry (Spina, Trevisan) and at last what such theories have in common with the voice of subalterns and the epistemologies of the South (Santos). As so far, the author tried to show in this research and posterior analysis, the richness found in Popular Culture and Folkloric Christmas Chants.

Torquato, Arthur Luís de Oliveira January 2017 (has links)
The thesis deals with the period in which the political advertising was a fundamental tool in the process of legitimization of authoritarian and totalitarian regimes emerging between the decades of the 1930s and 1940s. Specifically, it sought to understand an event, the Exposição do Mundo Português, that took place in Portugal in 1940, in order to operate this kind of advertising, making the use of public space as well as an event of great proportions to convince the masses. Aiming to build a legitimacy of the salazarista regime, this event had the presence of Brazilian scholars that contributed positively to the construction of the Portuguese colonial policy. Thereby, starting from the hypothesis that the Secretariat of National Propaganda (SPN) aimed to justify and legitimize political practices of the Estado Novo in Portugal, the present thesis analyzed the propagandistic material produced by, and about, the Portuguese World Exhibition. The study revealed singular aspects of the estadonovista cultural policy with the aid of scholars and architects in the recognition process of the Estado Novo through both arts and letters.

Quarlery, Lía 12 April 2018 (has links)
The present work, through a broad historical survey and an analysis of laws on mission administration during the period of domination by the Society of Jesus (1620-1767) and the post-Jesuit period (1768-1801) in the territory occupied by the Guaraní, analyzes the characteristics of two models of organization and administration for the Guaraní population: Jesuit communalism and Bourbon assimilation. Specifically, we reconstruct the ideological bases, the contextual factors and the political objectives inscribed in each model, as well as contrasting them via specific oppositional frames: purity and mestizaje, community and individual, spatial subjection and mobility, and segregation and assimilation.

Seven Movements from "Missa Festiva" (1817) of Marcos Portugal (1762–1830): A Vocal Score with Critical Commentary

Brites Pereira David Coelho, Júlia 05 1900 (has links)
Marcos António da Fonseca Portugal (1762–1830) is considered by several Luso-Brazilian musicologists to be the most prolific and influential Portuguese composer in history, having impacted the Portuguese and Brazilian music scene significantly during his lifetime. Marcos Portugal achieved international fame for his large-scale works, which include sacred compositions, Italian opera seria, as well as farsas and opera buffa in Portuguese. Despite the reputation he achieved during his lifetime, today his works are understudied and underperformed, even in Lusophone countries. Such an oversight is noticeable particularly as regards his sacred music corpus. For this reason, I have chosen Missa Festiva (1817) as the subject of this dissertation. Creating a vocal score of the solo, duo and trio movements of Missa Festiva will be helpful not only for performers, but also for scholars and conductors who wish study this work. A vocal score makes accessible the performance of individual movements when only piano, organ, or another keyboard instrument is available. By facilitating the performance and analysis of Missa Festiva, this document will contribute to the work's dissemination and to a better understanding of the value of early nineteenth-century Luso-Brazilian virtuosic vocal sacred music. The manuscript used for the transcription and orchestral reduction into a vocal score of movements III-IX is BR-Rcm MS CRI-SM59 from the Acervo Musical do Cabido Metropolitano do Rio de Janeiro, from 1818 (images included in the dissertation).

Ilustração brasileira (1854-1855) e a ilustração luso-brasileira (1856, 1858, 1859): uma contribuição para o estudo da imprensa literária em língua portuguesa / \'Ilustração Brasileira\' (1854-1855) and \'A Ilustração Luso-Brasileira\' (1856, 1858,1859): a contribution to the study of the literary press in Portuguese language

Sant\'Anna, Benedita de Cássia Lima 12 March 2007 (has links)
This dissertation entitled \"Ilustração Brasileira (1854-1855) and A Ilustração Luso-Brasileira (1856, 1858, 1859): a contribution to the study of the literary press in Portuguese language\" was carried out to demonstrate that, in Brazil, the illustrative press began with the publication of Ilustração Brasileira, since no former publication gave such a great emphasis and special prominence to the \"illustrative model\" as the magazines at issue did, what can be confirmed by analyzing the Brazilian journals which preceded it. It was also proved that the publication of the magazine A Ilustração Luso-Brasileira (1856, 1858, 1859) followed a tradition of the ascendant Portuguese illustrative press. This dissertation also broaches the relevance of both illustrations to the study of the Portuguese and Brazilian Romantic literatures, as well as the role played by each literature in the development process of the literary and illustrative press in each of those countries, and additionally presents a separate volume of the table of contents classified according to the categories of texts published in each of those magazines.
