Women who give birth to New Worlds : three feminine perspectives on Lusophone postcolonial Africa

This thesis aims at analysing comparatively the literary production of three African female authors - the Cape Verdean Dina Salústio (1941), the Mozambican Paulina Chiziane (1955) and the Angolan Rosária da Silva (1959) - so as to observe the authors' cultural construction of their complex postcolonial nations from a female-focalized point of view and their representation of the women of these nations interacting with the transcultural contexts of each analysed country. Their works demonstrate the importance of thinking nationalism and national identity through gender, simultaneously highlighting the potential of situated gender analysis for the understanding and contestation of the power networks that consolidate the supremacy of hegemonic discourses. Hence, the main argument that this thesis develops in three distinct chapters (each one devoted to the literary production of each author) and in the light of a particular theoretical framework is that the building of the post-independence nations under analysis is structured through gender differentiation. The point of departure for this project is the work developed by specific postcolonial theorists who analyse and deconstruct hegemonic discourses of identity. Hence, Benedict Anderson's understanding of the nation as an 'imagined political community' (1991) is explored and widened by Homi Bhabha's theorization of the dynamics of national discourse (1990), whose instability comes from the friction between its pedagogical and performative dimensions. This emphasis on empowering marginality takes us to Edward Said's reflections on exile (2001). For Said, the condition of exile represents an irrecoverable displacement of the human being as regards her/his own homeland, a state which she/he will permanently try to revoke. Andrea O'Reilly Herrera (2001) uses the term insílio to emphasise the psychological and emotional dimensions of this state, which precedes the actual physical exile. Reflections on the active involvement of the displaced in the renegotiation of the nation are also at the core of Mary Louise Pratt's theorization of contact zones, autoethnography and transculturation (1991). The emphasis on the disruptive potential of autoethnography is recaptured in Graham Huggan's study of the Post-Colonial Exotic (2001), focusing specifically on the potential of what he called 'celebratory autoethnography'. Nonetheless, considering that these approaches are largely gender blind, the study questions their premises further by incorporating postcolonial feminist theories and feminist theories from sociology. Anne McClintock (1995) and Nira Yuval-Davis's (1997) important proposal of the analysis of nationalism through the lens of a theory of gender power gave access to multiple experiences of the nation. Amina Mama's (2001) proposal of the analysis of individual and national identity through gender with a view to understanding and dismantling the power structures in operation adds to these strong theorizations. Considering that the three examined countries had one-party socialist regimes immediately after independence, Catherine Scott's study on gender and development theories (1995) facilitates a situated analysis of gender as well. Through this outlook, the study assesses the feasibility and limitation of the application of such theories to the gender-related issues in the specific context of postcolonial lusophone Africa. Furthermore, it explores the possible existence of common 'lusophone postcolonial' spaces that link these women's experiences of Portuguese colonialism and the socialist experiment. Our corpus is formed by interviews maked by students linguistic graduate at the Federal University of São Carlos city , in 2009, during the Linguistic course taught by Prof. Dra. Soeli Maria Schreiber da Silva. In this research, we propose to study the functioning of the Portuguese language, so with the imaginary one language . Our objective was to observe it as the Portuguese -speaking establish a relationship with the colonization story at the utterance time. About our analysis, we observe speakers affected by the symbolic subjects that are located one at a time and place. In this sense, subjects are constituted in the Event enunciation, it is that we analyzed their positions, places that speak and the way they talk, how they speak and how their mean words. Thus the goal of this work is the language relationship where we consider, based on this theoretical foundation, that the senses are formed in the enunciative events, connected to the history, to the social as well as to the politics. / Nosso trabalho intitulado Relação ente Línguas: diferentes modos de dizer o português brasileiro tem como arcabouço teórico a Semântica do Acontecimento desenvolvida por Guimarães (2005b), a qual estabelece uma relação com a Análise do Discurso de filiação francesa, de modo específico, e, em geral, com as teorias do sujeito. Embasados nessa filiação teórica para constituir nosso corpus, destacamos entrevistas realizadas pelos alunos do curso de graduação em Linguística da Universidade Federal de São Carlos, datadas do ano de 2009, durante a disciplina de Políticas Linguísticas, ministrada pela Profª. Drª. Soeli Maria Schereiber da Silva, com o intuito de desenvolver reflexões sobre a língua portuguesa, em um determinado espaço de enunciação. Nesta pesquisa, propomo-nos a estudar como se dá o funcionamento da língua portuguesa, a partir de uma análise enunciativa da linguagem, abrindo uma reflexão sobre a distribuição política das línguas, assim com o imaginário de língua una no Brasil. Nessa perspectiva, nossa questão foi observarmos como os falantes enunciam sobre sua língua ao estabelecerem uma relação com a história de colonização que no acontecimento de linguagem, significa a partir do recorte de memorável e como a divisão que se estabelece entre o português do Brasil e do português de Portugal no espaço de enunciação brasileiro se faz presente por meio dos falantes ao predicarem a língua a qual afirmam seu pertencimento. A respeito das nossas análises, buscamos através das entrevistas fazer um estudo enunciativo da linguagem em que os falantes são sujeitos afetados pelo simbólico que se localizam em um tempo e um espaço. Nesse sentido, os sujeitos são constituídos no Acontecimento enunciativo, pois é nesse que analisamos suas posições, os lugares de que falam e o modo como falam, de que modo falam e como os seus dizeres os significam. Desse modo, esse trabalho objetiva-se, por tratar da relação entre línguas como relação político-histórica e social da linguagem em que observarmos como os falantes enunciam sobre sua língua após mais de meio século da definição do nome Língua portuguesa pelo congresso nacional e como esses falantes são tomados pelas suas divisões, distinguindo-se assim linguisticamente.

In century XVI, an old Portuguese and colonial carnival arrived at Brazil colony brought by formers. From years 1970 of century XX, it occurred an inversion on those flows when Brazil started to export new languages, as of the school of samba (derived from the colonial Carnival) and soap operas. This process was after intensified the after the Revolution dos Cravos, a fact that was responsible for reopening the cultural and political boundaries of Portugal. This thesis analyzes this communicative circuit between Brazil and Portugal that start to characterize a species of context post-colonial of the lusophonie, understood in this research as being a media environment for the countries that use the Portuguese language. To compose the theoretical grating this work uses concepts from authors who argue about lusophonie (Cunha, 2005), the carnival (Bahkthin, 1998; Damatta, 1997), evolutive theories of culture (Katz & Greiner, 2004, 2005, 2009), processes of cultural hybridization (Canclini, 2001), post-colonials theories (Bhabha, 2003, Hall, 2003), semiotics (Santaella & Noth, the 2004) and communication (Mcluhan, 1997). The methodology understands bibliographical, internet, video and musical data the inquiry and its correlation with the other sources of information, proceeding from the contact with the schools of samba in Portugal, made possible for the research of field that was carried through with the support of the University of the Minho, in cities and Portuguese villages that practice the carnival ritual. The main results is about the conclusion that the imitation of the Brazilian parades in the foreign environment of Portugal is a complex process and sets in motion what this if calling "market of languages . This market of languages represents an inversion of sensible in the habitual circuits, therefore Brazil, the former-colony, now is exporting languages to the former-metropolis: schools of samba, soap opera, etc. The unfolding of this quarrel can be identified in debates of authors as Boaventura de Souza Santos whose project of research ALICE (2011) argues that Europe needs to recognize itself in the mirrors of the worlds that helped to create. In this inquiry, it is considered, therefore, that in market of languages between Brazil and Portugal, the samba schools, as process derived from the colonial Carnival, is a possible metaphor of these mirrors / Esta investigação tem como objeto de estudo a linguagem dos desfiles de escola de samba nos fluxos comunicativos entre Brasil e Portugal. No século XVI, a antiga brincadeira carnavalesca portuguesa do Entrudo chegou ao Brasil colônia trazida pelos colonizadores. A partir dos anos 1970 do século XX, o jogo se inverteu quando o Brasil começou a exportar novas linguagens, como a da escola de samba (derivada do antigo Entrudo) e as telenovelas. Este processo foi intensificado após a Revolução dos Cravos, responsável pela reabertura política e cultural de Portugal. Esta tese analisa justamente este circuito comunicativo entre Brasil e Portugal, que passa a caracterizar uma espécie de contexto pós-colonial da lusfonia, entendida nesta pesquisa como sendo um ambiente midiático para os países que utilizam a língua portuguesa. Para compor a grade teórica são analisadas as obras de autores que discutem a lusofonia (Cunha,2005), o carnaval (Bahkthin, 1998; Damatta, 1997), as teorias evolutivas da cultura (Katz &Greiner, 2004, 2005, 2009), os processos de hibridação cultural (Canclini, 2001), as teorias pós-coloniais (Bhabha, 2003, Hall,2003), a semiótica (Santaella & Noth,2004) e a comunicação (Mcluhan,1997). A metodologia compreende a investigação bibliográfica, webgráfica, videográfica e fonográfica e sua correlação com as outras fontes de informação, provenientes do contato com as escolas de samba em Portugal, viabilizado pela pesquisa de campo que foi realizada com o apoio da Universidade do Minho, em cidades e aldeias portuguesas que praticam os festejos carnavalescos. Os principais resultados dizem respeito à constatação de que a imitação dos desfiles brasileiros no ambiente estrangeiro de Portugal é um processo complexo e aciona o que esta se chamando de "mercado de linguagens . Este mercado de linguagens representa uma inversão de sentido nos circuitos habituais, pois o Brasil, a ex-colônia, agora esta exportando linguagens para a ex-metrópole: escolas de samba, telenovela, etc. Os desdobramentos desta discussão podem ser identificados em debates de autores como Boaventura de Souza Santos cujo projeto de pesquisa ALICE (2011) discute que a Europa precisa se reconhecer nos espelhos dos mundos que ajudou a criar. The research corpus is composed of four audiovisual who cover the visit of the representative of Brazil to Africa in October 2011. From Brazil 's policy in Africa and the investigation of these findings, we sought to understand how the statements in question construct representations of Brazil in the press . Stops were studied : 1 ) the figurativities that configure the simulacrum of Brazil action in these territories ; 2) thematic roles that Brazil takes within these communication vehicles , 3) axiological level and the values in circulation in these discourses ; 4 ) how is sanctioned the making of Brazil by the media texts under review ; 5 ) the way in which jobs are the processes of persuasion that occur between enunciator and enunciatee of these discourses ; 6 ) how these discourses are constructed in order to create the effects of veridiction ; 7 ) the manner in which the projections of these discourses enunciation contribute to the effect of meaning that is present in them . We rely on Pimentel , Saraiva , & Pereira Visentini when they claim that the policy of Brazil in Africa is done under heavy economic interests , being thus a highly controversial political strategy , which clashes with the discourses that often circulate about the relationships permeate the Lusophone, which more clearly indicate approaches and cultural common language. It is thus our research hypothesis that an analysis of the texts that are components of the corpus can bring constructs representations of Brazil allowing legitimize the actions of Brazil in these territories. Theoretical basis of our analysis is semiotic theory built by Algirdas Julien Greimas and Eric Landowski . Still, for being our texts listed syncretic , we will take as a reference for research Jean - Marie Floch and Ana Claudia de Oliveira , among others / Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo delinear os simulacros de Brasil, no que tange suas relações com os países lusófonos Angola e Moçambique edificados no programa Atividades da Presidenta, da TVNBR. O corpus da investigação é composto por quatro audiovisuais que fazem a cobertura da visita da representante do Brasil à África em outubro de 2011. A partir da política do Brasil na África e da investigação desses enunciados, buscou-se compreender como os enunciados em análise constroem as representações de Brasil na imprensa. Para isso foram estudados: 1) as figuratividades que configuram os simulacros de ação do Brasil nesses territórios; 2) os papéis temáticos que o Brasil assume dentro desses veículos de comunicação; 3) os valores em circulação no nível axiológico desses discursos; 4) o modo pelo qual é sancionado o fazer de Brasil nos textos da mídia em análise; 5) o modo pelo qual estão postos os processos de convencimento que se dão entre enunciador e enunciatário desses discursos; 6) como esses discursos são construídos no sentido de criarem os efeitos de veridicção; 7) o modo pelo qual as projeções da enunciação desses discursos contribuem para o efeito de sentido que neles se apresentam. Baseamo-nos em Pimentel, Saraiva, Visentini & Pereira quando afirmam que a política de Brasil em África se faz sob fortes interesses econômicos, mostrando-se, logo, uma estratégia política bastante polêmica, que destoa dos discursos que geralmente circulam sobre as relações que permeiam a lusofonia, os quais mais evidentemente apontam aproximações culturais e língua comum. Faz-se, assim, hipótese de nossa pesquisa que uma análise dos textos que são componentes do corpus possa trazer construções de representações de Brasil que permitam legitimar as atuações de Brasil nesses territórios. Como base teórica de nossa análise temos a teoria semiótica edificada por Algirdas Julien Greimas e Eric Landowski. Although the Brazilian and Portuguese editions of Elle have the same ideal and use the same linguistic code (the Portuguese language), they deal with distinct publics who have their own cultural issues. From this perspective, the present paper, based mainly on the theory of Discourse Analysis and on the lusophone studies, intends to analyze three covers of Portuguese Elle magazine and three covers of Brazilian Elle magazine, published in 2008 (year these magazines celebrated their 20th anniversary) and chose by a thematic selection. The Brazilian and Portuguese covers will be rethought as discourses which bring different world views, that is to say, discourses with specific identities and ideologies. Therefore, through the analysis of each cover, it is possible to discover the traps of two implicit ethe who reveal themselves by specific discourses which are able to comply with the expectation of their target audience, as well as to convert each edition in an object of desire for Portuguese and Brazilian readers who have different stories, myths, customs and values, in other words, readers who have different national identities. / A revista de moda Elle incorporou-se ao cenário português e brasileiro em 1988, com o intuito de proporcionar novidades sobre o mundo da moda, entretenimento, dicas de beleza e saúde às leitoras dessas duas nacionalidades. Embora a Elle portuguesa e a Elle brasileira sejam revistas que possuem um ideário comum e se valham do mesmo código linguístico (a língua portuguesa), elas se deparam com públicos distintos, com questões culturais próprias. Partindo dessa perspectiva, este estudo, alicerçado, principalmente, nos fundamentos teóricos da Análise do Discurso de linha francesa e no estudo reflexivo em torno da lusofonia, busca analisar três capas da revista Elle portuguesa e três capas da revista Elle brasileira, veiculadas em 2008 (ano em que ambas as revistas completaram 20 anos) e selecionadas por uma convenção temática. As capas portuguesas e brasileiras, por sua vez, serão repensadas como discursos que cogitam leituras de visões de mundo ímpares, ou seja, com características identitárias e ideológicas singulares. Com efeito, por meio da análise de cada capa é possível desvendar as armadilhas de dois ethé implícitos que se desnudam a partir de discursos específicos, capazes de atender às expectativas de seus respectivos públicos-alvo e de transformar cada exemplar em um objeto desejado por leitoras portuguesas e brasileiras que carregam consigo histórias, mitos, costumes e valores particulares, representantes de suas identidades nacionais.

Lusofonie jako minulost, přítomnost a budoucnost / Lusophony Past, Present and Future

This thesis will take a closer look at the relatively new and multifaceted concept of Lusophony. It begins with a brief introduction to Portuguese colonial history and postcolonial development with a focus on the connection between Portuguese national identity, the colonial empire and today's Lusophone world. Subsequently, this thesis will present various conceptions of the colonial empire and the panorama of the transformations of colonial and anti-colonialist narratives through which Portuguese colonization and decolonization were justified. Among other things, this thesis aims to explore the topic of Lusophony in historical contexts, to examine the circumstances of this idea's origin and its development in Portugal, and, finally, to present some conceptualizations in the current academic context. Lastly, the main problems that Lusophony struggles with in the postcolonial context will be considered, specifically its relationship with the colonial past(s). Ruminations on Renovation in Beira (Mozambique)

This paper explores specific sites of leisure-swimming pools, movie theatres, hotels, and cafés that were built at the height of colonial tourist aspirations in Beira, Mozambique (1950s-1970s) and that were formally reserved for colonial elites, specifically in this case, Portuguese citizens, British Rhodesian sugar plantation managers who were stationed in Beira at the time, and visiting (white) tourists, and their families. What do these infrastructures tell us about colonial urban planning, including sites of leisure and their histories of racialized restrictions? What can they say about tourism in a (Portuguese) colonial city that was once the centre of the East African corridor and an access point to the ocean for neighbouring (British) Malawi and Rhodesia? That these same swimming pools, theatres, hotels, and cafés are very much in use today by a very different set of inhabitants says something about this „reluctant city“ (Forjaz 2007, 2) in the making. Through my ethnographic observations and impressions during two visits to the city in April 2009 and February 2016 I will attempt to think productively with „ruins of empire“ (Stoler 2008) in order to chart a set of ruminations on acts of renovation in present day Beira. These ruminations are intended to show a complex city in its daily habitus by way of relationships (both of materiality and affect) between people and certain build environments. My focus suggests that these particular sites (and by way of their features such as colours, tiles, fixtures) afford a window onto Beira‘s condition of postcoloniality (as well, the simultaneity of its conditions of colonialism, socialism and war) through the creative ability of its African inhabitants to take specific urban infrastructures left behind by its Portuguese colonial possessors in the wake of Mozambique‘s rapid decolonization in 1975, and adapt them to their own strategic and innovative purposes.

Águias, cisnes e vermes: o imaginário animal na literatura simbolista e decadentista / Eagles, swans and worms: animals in symbolist and decadent literatures

As poéticas simbolista e decadentista surgiram no último quarto do século XIX, em Paris, como reação ao movimento naturalista e ao pensamento positivista e cientificista de então; logo se espalharam para outros países, dentre os quais se destacam Bélgica, Portugal e Brasil, cujos autores continuaram a manter intenso diálogo com a produção da capital francesa. As obras escritas nesse contexto costumavam apresentar preocupações quanto ao aspecto metafísico da existência, buscando correspondências entre mundo natural e mundo espiritual, ao mesmo tempo em que propunham uma série de inovações estético-formais, como o verso livre e a prosa poética. No plano temático, voltavam-se a mitos e lendas difundidos no imaginário ocidental, resgatando símbolos antigos para instaurar novas significações e atualizar imagens já desgastadas. Tendo em vista esse contexto e os recentes estudos sobre a representação dos animais na literatura, a presente tese procurou verificar em que medida os animais se fazem presentes e se revelam importantes no imaginário finissecular e de que maneira houve inovação na forma como foram retratados. Paralelamente, pretendeu-se confirmar a existência de um imaginário animal comum aos poetas e prosadores simbolistas e decadentistas, independentemente de seu país de origem, e apesar das particularidades próprias de cada autor ou obra. Para tanto, partindo das imagens da águia, do cisne e do verme, três dos animais mais recorrentes e significativos para o contexto finissecular, em autores de língua francesa e portuguesa, buscou-se interpretá-las em seu próprio contexto e comparálas com as simbologias atribuídas pela tradição de modo a averiguar as inovações propostas pelos simbolistas e decadentistas e as particularidades de seu imaginário animal. / Symbolist and Decadent poetics emerged in the last quarter of the 19th century, in Paris, as a reply to Naturalism and its contemporary positivist and scientistic philosophies. Symbolism and Decadentism soon spread to other countries, among which Belgium, Portugal and Brazil, whose authors much dialogued with its fellow French writers. Works written in such a context used to feature anxieties as to existences metaphysical aspect, seek similarities between natural and spiritual world, as well as propose a series of aesthetical and form innovations, such as the free verse and the poetic prose. When it came to themes, they sought myths and legends that were widespread in the Western imaginary, making use of long-lost ancient symbols so as to bring forth new meanings and modernise outworn imagery. Given this background and recent studies concerning the representation of animals in literature, the present thesis sought to ascertain how present and important animals are to the late 19th-century imaginary and how innovative their portrayal is. Furthermore, it was our intent to establish the existence of a shared imaginary about animals among symbolists and decadents, regardless of their birthplace and despite the particularities of each author and work. In order to reach this goal, eagle, swan and worm images were our starting point, since they proved to be among the most meaningful and recurrent animals, both in French and Portuguese speaking authors.
