Mechanical Design Desktop for Machine Elements

Subramanian, Anuj 05 September 2000 (has links)
The design of machine elements such as belts, chain and sprocket, gears, cams, bearings, etc., is a complex procedure. The analytical procedure to design such elements is non-linear, often based upon statistical information and frequently heuristic in nature. The procedure is iterative and involves choosing various weighing factors based upon the application and usage. The procedure is greatly influenced by a designer's intuitive skill and experience. Due to the increased popularity of the Internet as a source of information, a number of machine element manufacturers have published design procedures for the design of machine elements. Here, an attempt has been made to arrange all the formulae, tables, charts, standards, and web resources, which are inherent to the design process, to best aid the designer. A number of computer applications for machine design have been developed in the recent past but are limited in scope and utility as they tend to allow the designer to change only certain parameters while assigning fixed values to most parameters. This stifles the designer's creativity and diverts focus on the computer program rather than the physical problem. An attempt has been made here to allow the designer flexibility in design and increased productivity, by keeping a record of the various steps undertaken by the designer, in a particular design process. / Master of Science

Integration of database technology and multibody system analysis

Tisell, Claes January 2000 (has links)
The design process includes many different activities inwhich various computational mechanics tools are used forbehaviour modelling of mechanical systems and their buildingblocks, e.g. machine elements. These tools usually supportlarge and complex models and they produce large quantities ofdata with a high degree of complexity. In these situations, efficient data management and the ability to search and sharedata are important issues to achieve an efficient designprocess. Today, this ability is usually not supported by theindividual applications even though this probably would improveand facilitate the ability to search for data on a higher levelin the engineering information system. This work investigates the ability of searching andcomparing analysis data within behaviour models of technicalsystems as well as over the analysis results. This is done byinvestigating the potential benefits of integrating moderndatabase technology with a multibody system (MBS) analysissoftware in the same manner that has been successfully done forbusiness and administrative applications. This has resulted inan implemented pilot system, named MECHAMOS, that integratesthe main-memory resident object-relational database managementsystem (DBMS) AMOSwith the symbolic multibody system (MBS)software SOPHIA operating in MapleV. This provides MECHAMOSwith both symbolic and numeric mathematical capabilities forMBS analysis and data management capabilities to search andcompare engineering data in the database. The approach, making data managing tools available in acomputer aided engineering software, considerably improves theanalysis of technical systems. The analysis is brought to ahigher level through the available query language and thedesired data is specified, fairly intuitively, in a query. Whenthe query is processed, the DBMS knows how to retrieve andautomatically derive the required data. As shown in someexamples, the ability to search over stored and derived data inthe database is not restricted to a single MBS-model inMECHAMOS. Because of the implemented materialisation handling,it is also possible to search, combine, and compare data fromseveral simulation results which are based on several differentmodels in the database. This extends the ability to performoptimisation from a traditional parameter study to thepossibility to analyse and compare different technical conceptsthrough the query language and hereby retrieve those conceptsthat fulfil certain requirements. If submodel techniques aresupported, queries over a set of components in the databasewould automatically create, analyse and compare the possibleconcepts. This would assist the designer in choosing the bestcomponents for a design.

An Alternative Variable Valve Timing System for Heavy Duty Vehicles

Eriksson, Mikael, Olovsson, Daniel January 2016 (has links)
The ability to control engine valve timing has the potential to alter the engine performance over the entire operating range. The outcome of valve timing technology enables the possibility to increase efficiency, lowering emissions, increase engine torque, etc. One of the simplest ways to obtain a variable valve timing is to use cam phasers. The dynamics of a hydraulic cam phaser has been studied, three concepts with the purpose to control such an element has been developed using simulation driven product development. Focus have been on robustness, simplicity and implementation. A final concept using on/off solenoids to control a torque driven cam phaser has been designed and simulated in GT-SUITE which validated its performance and functionality. A dynamic model was built in Simulink which simulated the behaviour of the cam phaser and provided tools for optimizing the rotor design. By combining the knowledge of mechanical- and control engineering at Scania, the development process of such machine elements was effective. The outcome of this thesis has given a new perspective in understanding these components and their potentials.

Concept development of a compression molding machine for biocomposite materials / Konceptutveckling av en formpressningsmaskin för biokomposit material

Perttu, Gusten, Larsson, Adam January 2022 (has links)
The growing concern with the environmental impacts of disposable products has placed an emphasis on ensuring the sustainability of material systems. A shift in the selection of material can decrease the negative effects of disposable products. One class of materials with good credentials is biocomposite materials, a material partly consisting of biodegradable products. In this thesis project a compression molding machine suitable for the pressing of biocomposite materials are developed for the start-up Trash to Gold. The start up is in a early process of developing compression molding machine. As of now they use a modified workshop press to test out the pressing of to-go coffee cups made out of biodegradable a biocomposite material partly consisting of coffee grounds. The current press is not optimised for their expected customer group and it is therefore appropriate to develop a new one. The aim of this thesis project is to assist Trash to Gold in their development of a compression molding machine, suitable for upcycling biodegradable waste into disposable products. The objective of this thesis project is to develop a concept of a compression molding machine that can be used to print to-go coffee cups partly made of coffee grounds. The concept to be developed will be for a press that weighs less and has smaller dimensions than the current one to suit the target group. The product development methodology of the project is based on Ulrich and Eppinger’s book ”Product Design and Development”. Some of the approaches used from book are modified for better application on the project. The project also includes digital and theoretical tools to determine if the concept can withstand the pressure generated when the machine is in use. The result of the thesis project is a concept of a compression molding machine that meet requirements given by the start up. Suitable parts for the basic structure of the compression molding machine is presented such as how the pressing function will occur and the outer frame with where the different components will sit. The resulting concept is smaller and more light weight compared to the current machine.
