Manchester vs : London - The etymology of the place-names of the two areas in connection with British history

Olofsson, Anna-Maria January 2008 (has links)

The fact that five invasions have taken place in Great Britain, which all made a big impact on the country, makes the history of place-names particularly interesting. The aim of this essay is therefore to compare place-names in the Manchester area and the London area, and try to find the origin of the names. An additional aim is to find out which foreign invasion, if any, has coloured the areas the most.

Creativity as an adaptive process in the making of a civic parade event in Manchester : an ethnography

Symons, Jessica January 2014 (has links)
This thesis uses insight drawn from fieldwork among people developing a civic parade in Manchester over 2011-12 to analyse what happens in the translation of ideas into entities for display. It argues for creativity as an adaptive process, a responsive, dynamic activity manifested by parade makers, as they sought to realise the imagined event. It traces the roles that underpinned parade production and how people made sense and use of allocated responsibilities, while working within and through organisational boundaries. It situates the parade as an ‘art object’ (Gell 1998), constituted of assemblages at different scales (De Landa 2006), each embedded in a web of relationships to show how: a civic attempt to bring a public into being provides insight on the constituting organisational structures; the operational style of the arts organisation commissioned to produce the parade, led to imagining it into existence; and how two community groups responded to the parade parameters according to their own social dynamics. The thesis builds on ethnographic analyses of collaborative activities to consider how organisational shapes combine and how their constitutions substantially affect evolving entities. Situating creativity as an adaptive process separates creative activities from art practices by emphasising how supporting people to respond productively to changing circumstances encourages them to be creative. This thesis makes an original contribution to anthropology by showing through ethnography how creativity is a process, enacted through purposeful adaptation to circumstances in order to realise something tangible. It also encourages the development of a comparative framework for contemplating the extent to which different cultural contexts enable adaptive endeavours.

True blues, blacks and in-betweens : urban regeneration in Moss Side, Manchester

Rahman, Tanzima January 2010 (has links)
In this thesis I describe state directed transformation through urban regeneration policy in the context of Moss Side, Manchester in the North West of England. The thesis explores connections between the state project of urban regeneration and the lives of residents’ who were targeted by strategies. The thesis therefore moves from economic and political contexts that informed the policies of urban regeneration to how they were implemented and by whom, and then into the personal lives of residents in order to demonstrate connections between these. The latter half of the thesis focuses particularly on residents who were associated with the gang “GCG” who were often the targets of regeneration strategies. The thesis deals with a variety of themes: global cities, governance, constructing race, recognition politics, localities, simulations and violence. These are grounded in detailed ethnography describing Moss Side through residents lives which transformed as a result of regeneration policy. The thesis argues that urban regeneration strategies do not (as is often argued by regeneration practitioners) relieve the difficulties existing residents experience and yet often have far reaching consequences. I demonstrate this through a variety of examples: new governing structures, consultation processes, anti-social behaviour orders (ASBOs), gang members strategies opposing displacement, pirate radio disc jockeys searching for legitimacy, and the threat of sexual violence.

In this work, that consists of a case study, having as urban scene and stage the mythical “Manchester Mineira” (heading conferred to the city of Juiz de Fora, in reason of its glorious industrial past), I look for to emphasize and to analyze the relation between myth and cultural tourism, from the referring anthropological theory to the first one, placed at risk in practical (touristic and ethnographic) concerning to as. My insertion, as participant, in constant “the historical-cultural” stroll of the Project “To live Juiz de Fora – discover this city”, that it is promoted by the City hall of this city, allowed me to observe - “of close and of inside” - as the myth operates there as mediating symbolic of the dialogue established between an objective and official history, told by means of the disclosed patrimony, and subjective histories of the “tourist-natives”, that they revitalize (symbolically) this patrimony with tourist practical its. It is treated, therefore, of a ethnography of a stroll of end of week (or of “Sunday”), of one to make tourism (cultural) in the proper city where if it lives, not of a form independent and isolated, but collective and mediated by agents of the State in its municipal sphere. In this case, the displacement in the space implies a displacement in the time, in the direction of the construction of a collective memory. Revitalized in this practical of revitalization of the historical-cultural heritage of the city, the myth supplies to these “tourist-natives” the symbols to be thought as members of a ampler community about the space and in the time, thus fomenting a feeling of belongs to the city. I conclude affirming that this form to make tourism is also a form of (re)inventing traditions, cultures, histories and cities.

MUZEUM TEXTILNÍHO PRŮMYSLU V BRNĚ / MUSEUM OF TEXTILE INDUSTRY IN BRNO

Svíbová, Tereza January 2018 (has links)
The goal of this diploma thesis was area between the city parts Malomerice and Obrany. After the construction of mill drive, an artificial island was created there. Industrial site with textile factories was established in 1912, however it does not fulfil its original purpose anymore and it is fairly damaged today. My intention was to clear the island and bring back its original form - park, unique place in nature where people acknowledge proximity of the river and cultural activities as well. I designed textile museum in the former factory building. It is accompanied by pavilion of Contemporary textile and fashion and also engineering exhibition. One of the components is an artificial canal for canoeists.
